got CM 12.1 release installed on my sgh-t999 and am wanting to update to latest 12.1 nightly, do I just wipe cache/dalvik and then flash via twrp and then flash gapps or should I wipe data as well and then flash? also, do I need to flash gapps every time I flash a new nightly?
You can try dirty flashing the new nightly over the old nightly. There should be no need to perform a full wipe and re-install gapps unless you have altered the old nightly to much to let a dirty flash work.
I understand about dirty flashing one nightly over the next, but was curious if it was any different flashing a nightly over a 'release'
Nope, should not make any difference.
So I don't have to wipe cache or dalvik? Just flash?
Yup. If it doesn't boot, you may gave to perform a full wipe before installing.

If i update from RC1 to RC2 will i lose all of my apps and data? How do i do the update?
Are you using clockwork or Amon Ra for recovery? Just download RC2 and the latest gapps and put them on the root of you sd card. Make a nand backup of your current setup, then wipe cache and dalvik and flash CM7 RC2 and gapps in the same recovery session. That should do it. If it doesn't work, you may have to wipe data, but if all goes well, you shouldn't lose anything.
Make sure it's the latest gapps though b/c the gapps for RC1 and RC2 are different.
I am using clockwork mod
Never used clockwork, but flash the same way you flashed RC1, but backup first. Then wipe cache, dalvik and flash RC2 and gapps.
Where can i get the new gapps? they are not in the same place as the download mirrors for CM7 RC2
For the record, you do not have to download the newest Gapps (especially since there's been a few problems with the newest set). If all of your Gapps are working fine you needn't worry
I just flashed cm10 and ics gapps on my at&t gs3. I just realized I flashed the wrong gapps. Do I need to wipe anything before I flash the jb gapps or will they just replace the ics gapps?

Just reflash the JB gapps on top. i've done it a couple of times on mine. it should be fine. always remember wipe delvik cache after you flash.

Always wipe delvik cache after flashing anything? Does that include ROMs? I flashed a couple ROMs and I always wipe delvik cache before I flash, not after
Right now I am running jb build 5, and I want to update it to jb milestone 1.
My question is simple, can you dirty flash it? I know that people who ask about dirty flash should be "killed", but I'm new to this Android and flashing ROM.

Seriously?
Dirty flash it. People who clean flash every nightly like wasting their time. I've outlined my feelings on this issue more than once. Wipe Dalvik and be done with it.
I have always dirty flashed AOKP between builds on my previous phone with only wiping cache/dalvik cache. Only time I full wipe is when there are significant changes or Android version jump. Never had any problems. Here's my recommendation for dirty flashing:
If you have Google Wallet installed on /system partition, reset it first.
1. Boot into recovery
2. Wipe cache and dalvik cache
3. Run a nandroid backup. Always do this.
4. Copy the nandroid backup to your PC or somewhere safe
5. Flash the new build
6. Flash gapps
7. Flash custom kernel (optional)
8. Reboot and profit
Dirty flash or full wipe flash, there always are possibilities for problems. Sometimes you could have a bad flash, just reflash or restore the nandroid and reflash.

Thanks for all of the responses, I'll just dirty flash it. Also I have brick my phone twice now and was able to unbrick it, so I'm not really worry about bricking it again.
I have a Galaxy s3 rooted So I was ble to flash the newest nightly cb 10.1 before the one that came out today. I want to try out the one that came out today however I am confused about something. I know i have to flash the rom and delete data and cache during recovery mode and what not. What step do i need to take so that when i do flash thi snew rom i dont have to manually re install all my apps and configure my phones layout again?/
You can try dirty flashing by just clearing cache and dalvike cache after you flash the new nightly. This method won't affect any of your apps or settings. If you get any weird bugs from dirty flashing, try clean flashing (which wipes pretty much everything) before reporting any bugs. If you have to clean flash then you can backup your apps with Titanium Backup.
I'm running CyanogenMod 10.1.3 RC2 on my One X. If I try to update to 10.2 nightlies the phone goes in to continual reboot. I can then revert back but do I need to do something else to update to 10.2?
did you flash the kernel included inside the 10.2 rom after you flashed the rom.zip from recovery?
if you have flashed the kernel try to wipe data partition.
I hadn't flashed the kernel. It wasn't clear that you had to do this so I can try it later. Thanks
Would updating to CM 10.2 wipe all apps from my phone? Just wondering how long to allow myself before starting
In my experience when i install an update of the same rom i can not flash the kernel, but when i change rom (for example from 10.1 to 10.2), i flash the kernel and wipe data and cache
Is that a full data wipe/factory reset? In other words, delete all data?
Yes
