Flashing ROMS - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, looking for some more NEWB advice lol. So i flashed Cloudy the other day on my G3 and is working great, but say if i want to flash a CM mod or something, what are the steps i have to take to ensure a good flash? Do i just do it the same way, download the ROM file, Wipe systems, and install it? or do i have to flash a stock rom and then flash a new CM mod. Or can i just flash over top of the Cloudy rom but still do a Wipe.

Just wipe i try dirty flashing first so i dont have to reinstall any apps but any problems do full wipe

[Q] How to ensure a clean ROM install

After playing around with several ROM / kernel combinations I am looking to return to the latest stock Rom. I have the PC36IMG file on my SDcard and will be installing via ClockworkMod recovery. What is the proper procedure to ensure the cleanest possible installation? Im a bit scared of all the options in recovery such as all the format options in the partitions menu. Do I need to format everything? Will any files be carried over? I know I will need to re install Clockwork and SU app just want to make sure everything is as clean as possible. Thanks in advance.
cleanest possible? Flash this in recover. It wipes 100% of every every time.

If you are just changing kernels, choose wipe catch and delv catch.
Changing to a different rom you need to wipe everything.
Thanks for the tip. I am running a custom kernel so I'd be looking to wipe all of those files as well as the ROM. The ROM I am using is just a re packaged RUU, does the RUU completely wipe all data or will I still need to manually wipe?
You should always manually wipe. I never count on something else to do it for me. When I am changing roms I always wipe data/factory reset, cache and davlick, plus I use calkulin's format all tool that the other responder to your question attached to his post. That way you know nothing will be left over. Before you do all that, remember to make a backup of your current configuration just in case something goes wrong. I have been bailed out by nandroid backup a few times.
Also one more thing, there is a Rom on here that is the latest stock already rooted which would make it much easier on you. You could just wipe and flash and still have SU and all other benefits of having root. Just a suggestion.
I found the stock rom thread. It has both odexed and deodexed version. Odexed will probably boot faster, but deodexed can be themed and/or modded. Heres the link: Stock 3.70 EVO Rooted
I reccommend clearing the cache, and then wiping the dalvik to ensure a clean rom. After that, just flash your rom. As always if you are unsure, you can backup your SD card.

[Q] Help flashing kernel

What's up guys? I been flashing roms for a while now, and I have yet to flash a kernel. I wanna flash this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421704
I'm not sure what steps I have to do to successfully flash a kernel, Can I flash it just like I would a rom in rom manager? Or do I need to flash it in fast boot???
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.
Flash a kernel by going into CWM recovery, wipe dalvik cache and regular cache , install, done or I think you can do it from rom manager, been awhile, but I believe you can install while wiping dalvik
Edit: oops said rom instead of kernel XD

[Q] ROMs and Kernels?

Hi. I currently own the CDMA Galaxy Nexus, and I have rooted it.
I'm new on Android, and I have many, many questions.
One of the many questions I have is about ROMs and Kernels.
I know how to download and put it in my phone. However, what I'm confused is if I have to wipe the data and do a factory reset before I install a new kernel.
That applies to ROMs as well. Currently, I have the Revolution HD ROM, and I like it. If I want to put on a new ROM, would I have to do a factory reset and then install it?
The rooting world is so very confusing... I hope that someone could help me out.
new rom:
wipe factory, cache, dalvik
flash rom
flash gapps (if required)
flash kernel
reboot.
upgrade rom:
same rom (standard unless specified otherwise by dev)
wipe cache,dalvik [optional]
flash rom
flash gapps (if required)
flash kernel
upgrade kernel:
wipe dalvik, cache
flash kernel
I would add, that at first it seems like a pain, but after awhile, it's no problem.
Also, when you flash a new ROM (and gapps, depending on instructions) I'd recommend waiting on flashing the kernel until you've booted into the ROM and given it some time.
Follow zephik's guide and also remember to backup your apps and data using titanium backup or nandroid. Also it would be a good idea backup your stock radio so that you can reflash it after you flash from and kernel.

[Q] boot loop after roms install

So I have Droid incredible #1. Rooted s-off. I have before been able to flash custom roms. But I haven't tried for a while, and now I can't do any without it getting caught in a boot loop after it installs and reboots. I've tried cm7, miui, bugless beast, and probably 4 more tonight. All do it, but all let me remove battery and restore back to a backup I have. one possibility is its been so long since I've flashed a ROM, I may be on a custom ROM right now but thinking it's stock. Does it make a difference if I flash a ROM while already in another ROM? I'm not too techy but I have an idea of some stuff. It's not a big deal the phone works fine the way it is its just disappointing not being able to flash one I want. Thank you guys!
When flashing a new ROM, make sure, in recovery, you wipe data/factory reset, wipe system, and wipe boot. Then flash the ROM.

[Q] Custom Roms / Kernel Questions

I have a AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3 (SGH-1747) that is running stock with root.
I have rooted my phone using the samsung toolkit located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746665
Since that toolkit flashed a CWM Based recovery I have installed ROM Manager and flashed CWM Recovery version 6.0.1.2
My questions are..
- with my current setup.. am I technically running the "Stock" samsung kernel?
- why would you want to flash a different kernel to your phone?
- and is it necessary to flash a different kernel in order to use certain custom roms?
- At first I was leaning towards flashing CM10 nightly but the more I look at it.. I want to flash PARANOIDANDROID 2.22 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818199
Is this rom fully compatible with my AT&T phone? and since i'm running stock with root, do I need to do anything special before flashing this rom? Factory reset? Wipe Data? I've already made a full nandroid backup.
Thank you!
- with my current setup.. am I technically running the "Stock" samsung kernel? I believe so
- why would you want to flash a different kernel to your phone? Different kernels do different things.. some have better batter life.. some let you OC and UC..
- and is it necessary to flash a different kernel in order to use certain custom roms?Well sometimes.. Well technically.. most kernels will work with most of the ROMS out there.. as long as you stay withing your phones threads.. But some ROMs have a kernal with them.. and some ROMS you need to flash your own kernel..

Thank you for the reply.
On the rom i'm wanting to flash for my SGH-i747 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818199
The steps for flashing are as follows:
CWM: Install Zip: Rom: Download Here Make sure the file you download is PA-2.22-d2att.zip
CWM: Install Zip: Gapps: Download (These are the new ones)
CWM: Wipe Data/Factory Reset
CWM: Advanced/Wipe Dalvik Cache
Reboot and edit your Apps Dpi & Layout under Settings/Paranoid Settings - DO NOT RESTORE YOUR OLD PROPERTIES FOR NOW
Would i need to wipe data, factory reset, then also wipe dalvik cache BEFORE I install the rom and gapps since i'm running stock with root?
Thank you
i'm also reading that for paranoidandroid you must first flash CM10 then flash paranoid.. is this accurate?
umm.. not sure where you saw that you need to flash a CM rom before flashing the paranoid ROM..
I believe the Paranoid rom is based off CM
The instruction on the link you have, in my opinion, is wrong..
The way that i flash my roms is...
Wipe data/factory reset..
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik
Format/Data
Fomat/System ( i think deletes backups) only do in emergency.aka optional step
Flash ROM
Flash Gapps.
THATS IT
Some people will wipe cache afer flashing a rom..
But if you wipe data/factory reset i believe deletes the ROM...

If you are already running CM10 then you don't need to wipe Cache. Just dalvik and data. Im pretty sure thats what was confusing, since this is based off of CM10.

yeah, I just keep reading and reading.. probably making this out to be more difficult than it really is just don't want to end up with a brick or anything.
I'm already on stock + root + latest CWM so I just need to put the files on my phone and flash but I believe these are the steps i need to take:
1- Download ROM and Gapps to internal sd card
2- Boot phone into recovery
3- WIPE Cache/Delvik/Data factory reset> Mounts and Storage- format system
4- Flash ROM and Gapps
