So I've installed TWRP recovery before unlocking the bootloader and now I can't unlock the bootloader and also I can't enter recovery mode.
I have been 2 hours trying to unlock the bootloader without success.
Current status:
un-rooted phone. Tried using the asus official bootloader unlocker app both rooted and unrooted without success. Also tried the ADB method.
I think I have the TWRP recovery installed - not sure. fastboot status says bootloader version is "unknown". Twrp manager says custom recovery not installed or not detected.
Unlocking bootloader via ADB always send "FAILED remote: permission denied".
Also I can't enter recovery mode. In fastboot i choose "RECOVERY" in red and it just restarts the phone to fastboot mode.
Asus version 2.20.40.160_20151225
Thank you very much!!
edit: Managed to unlock bootloader with one click unlock v2! will proceed to install twrp
Have you tried flashing stock recovery through bootloader, you can't flash regular twrp before unlocking bootloader, if you can successfully flash the recovery then you can adb sideload the full Rom and that should fix any problems, you could also flash through bootloader, after you have a clean flash, root the phone and use wondrous to unlock bootloader and flash twrp, should fix any problems you are having

So I have a Galaxy Nexus that I unlocked and rooted however I just updated to version 4.0.4 and now I have lost the root. I have the new su.zip and the toro.img file however I can't flash it.
I tried using adb
Type in these commands, adb reboot bootloader, and wait for your device to boot to the bootloader, then type fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork 5.5.0.4-toro.img, and wait until the command prompt tells you it is complete.
When i type adb reboot bootloader it reboots the phone but when I type the fastboot flash recovery portion it just sits there and doesn't flash anything.
How can I re-flash CWM on the phone without it being rooted?
Please help, I need to use wireless tether tonight as I am travelling and obviously it isn't working as my phone is no longer rooted.
One way to get a quick fix would be to post in the correct section...
Use gnex tool kit and flash root for stock 4.0.2.
Okay so I need to update to 2.19.40 or 2.19.40.20.. I am currently at 2.15.40.13 I wanted to do this so I can unlock my bootloader. So I can Install Twrp And then finally install the custom rom for the device. Since I am already rooted its not letting me update the latest update for this. When i try to update my software it just brings me to the bootloader and sits there and does nothing else. I have no idea what to do, I have tried a lot and nothing seems to work, please help.

Flash OEM unrooted rom from Asus website, they have all versions. You can flash it threw oem recovery option of the bootloader. Just press up/down button until you see Recovery, then just press the Power button.
Are you not able to UNroot? download OTA, sideload update to .18 or .20 and then root, unlock bootloader flash custom rom with supersu granting root?
Unroot before fishing and flash each version sequentially until you get to the one you need to unlock the device.

I have tried to unroot through the root app on my phone with the "Full Unroot" option. And it does nothing.
Hopeful fix
I was having this issue too after rooting my phone for the first time. I'm not sure if the rooting method was the culprit, or if it was simply missing some components from the factory.
Anyways, what I did to correct the issue and get it to upgrade is this:
In MHP1995's resources thread, there's a link to stock recoveries, find the stock recovery for the version that you're currently running, download that recovery along with the boot img. I'm not sure if the boot img is really necessary, but in my desperate attempts to get upgraded, I overwrote the bootloader with a newer version. So might as well play it safe and download them both.
After they're downloaded, boot into the bootloader (adb reboot bootloader from within android, vol up + power if powered off). Connect your phone to your PC, and use the fastboot command to flash the recovery and boot img that you just downloaded.
After that, you should be able to get it to go into recovery mode. You can try it manually from the bootloader screen by pressing the vol down button until you see recovery mode, then press the power button. It should go into recovery. If it doesn't work, it will just go back to the bootloader screen.
Hope that works for you. Those are the steps I took, and was able to get it to apply OTA updates after that.
EDIT: After those steps, unroot and then run the OTAs

Hey all,
Trying to get my TWRP recovery back after upgrading to M.
Flashed recovery a number of different ways but always end up back at the stock recovery after flashing. I've tried going straight into it before rebooting etc with no luck.
Any ideas?
Thanks

if your trying to flash recovery from your LP to get back to old back-ups in LP - you have to downgrade to LP first
There is only a recovery for flashing a patched SU / boot to give you root in MM.
Thanks for the reply.
Not trying to get back to LP backups. Just trying to get TWRP back on the phone again.

To flash twrp recovery, your bootloader needs to be unlocked. For now, there's no way to unlock the bootloader on MM. The only option is to downgrade to LP if you need twrp or customs roms.
I hope you understand my explanations.

this will work as a temporary recovery and you will be able to install SU and Xposed.
Here:

**WARNING** You need to have background knowledge of adb, fastboot, twrp, sideload.. before you can go on with this thread.
1. All credits go to @shakalaca. If you like his work, please make him a small donation for encouragement.
2. Do it at your risk and I won't be able to answer your questions.
3. There is no unlock for Android 6.0 atm. Device will be locked once you upgrade to 6.0.
4. Good thing is you can always downgrade to Lollipop to unlock your device following the instructions in this thread.
5. Flashing the attached SuperSU file modifies stock boot.img. In case you receive an OTA file later, do
**REMEMBER to FLASH BACK TO STOCK Android 6.0 BOOT.IMG** to unroot before upgrading to official Android 6.0.
Root:
1. Make sure your zenfone 2 is unlocked before upgrading to Android 6.0. If you upgrade to 6.0 from locked Lollipop, you have to downgrade to unlock it, then upgrade to 6.0.
2. Once you are in Android 6.0, fire the following command to boot twrp. is the twrp recovery file. This TWRP is recommended.
adb reboot-bootloader
fastboot boot
Click to collapse
3. adb sideload the attached SuperSu file in twrp. /OR install the SuperSU in twrp if you saved it in device storage.
4. reboot system. You will see a warning screen saying "Your device has failed Verification". Ignored it and wait for the reboot.
5. Done
Xposed:
1.Flash the attached Xposed file from twrp.
2.use Material Design Xposed Installer: Download Xposed Installer here
Downgrade:
Refer to Asus Zentalk Forum and grab the required files from there.
**Note that the first commnad line has been revised by @shakalaca and it should work without bricking the device.
fastboot flash token bom-token.bin
fastboot flash ifwi ifwi_ann_a0-mofd_v1-ze551ml.bin
fastboot flash fastboot droidboot.img
fastboot flash splashscreen splashscreen_ze551ml.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader

Then you can flash back stock recovery(.184 recommended), wipe the device(cache/userdata/system) and then sideload back stock LP or MM as you wish. OR, you can flash custom recovery/boot/system.img start from here.
Good luck!

So I unlocked the bootloader of my lg g4, however as much as i try to , I cant flash a recovery to my phone using adb , it just wont work and because of that i can flash supersu and root my device. Is there a way to root my device (my bootloader is already unlocked) without the use of adb or flash a recovery without adb?

Do you have read and followed the official twrp thread? You will not install a recovery by adb but with fastboot instead.
Check my twrp thread for the how-to.

Hello Everyone,
how to root Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe ZS570KL 2.15Ghz with Android 7.0?
It's possible? There are root solutions without unlocking bootloader?
Thank you
I believe you might be able to with a systemless root. This may cause issues though without the bootloader unlock.
What I'd do, and I've already unlocked my bootloader, is boot TWRP, this won't replace your recovery and will disappear next boot, then flash magisk systemless root.
This should allow root with a locked bootloader BUT I can't try this now as I have an unlocked bootloader.
You'd do this through fastboot.
Be prepared to reflash your stock rom if you do get a soft brick...

Thanks ultramag69 for info. Have you a guide for safe root? The only guide that seemed trustworthy that I found on the internet, unfortunately it was written in Chinese.

OK, if you are game...
As I said, my phone has bootloader unlocked so this worked fine, I don't know if it will work.
Essentailly you replace the stock recovery with TWRP TEMPORARILY, just one boot.
Download magisk systemless root file and put on sd card. Also activate developer settings and tick " USB Debugging".
Put TWRP file in folder with fastboot files on PC, hold shift and right click. Select "open CMD window here".
Put phone in fastboot mode. Attach to PC with usb.
Type in cmd window "fastboot devices", you should see you're serial number come up on another line if you are connected.
Type "fastboot boot twrp.img" - make sure the twrp file is named this.
You should reboot to TWRP. Make sure you DON'T select "Alter system files" as you're bootloader is locked.
Install magisk systemless root file from TWRP.
Reboot and see if it works...
As I said, I did this after I unlocked the bootloader but as magisk is a systemless root I don't see this not working.
That said there is always a risk when doing this sort of thing and I would urge you to unlock bootloader 1st as this makes it a bit easier to fix if things if something does go bad...
Yes, right. No root and TWRP for Anus ZendFone 3 Deluxe ZS570KL yet.
May be it become later. Right? Right!

If you unlock your bootloader then yes there is a TWRP you can flash and from there gain root by either flashing SuperSU or Magisk.
I prefer not to replace my recovery as when I was trying to gain root there was a problem with TWRP registering the touches in a reversed position, top right corner would register bottom left corner and so on. So instead I booted TWRP and installed Magisk, this gained root access but allowed flashing OTA updates instead of having to download a 2gb rom by keeping stock recovery.
Twrp has since been fixed and should be fine now but I still prefer to keep stock recovery, it's really up to you, either use "fastboot boot twrp.recovery" to temporarily replace stock (it reverts to stock when you reboot) or "fastboot flash twrp.recovery", this will flash twrp to your device permasnently (or until you want to replace it).
At the moment, magisk is not allowing safety net to pass but there should be an update soon that will fix this, flashing supersu will never allow a safetynet check to pass...
Again, up to you and how you use your device but either way will give you root access....
ultramag69
I have questions:
1. Where I can download fresh TWRP for Z016D model?
2. After install Magisk I must restart device for remove TWRP to stock recovery?
