Aaaaagh...so confusing, where to start

So, I basically understand the procedures to load a custom ROM on to this phone but what I don't understand is if it is possible to return it back to its original state (HBOOT and stock ROM, no unlocked bootloader). Any guidance...
I know to get stock, I will have to get a RUU (but I haven't seen one for my carrier (it's a UK based one)) and I don't want to use a Goldcard incase I need to send the phone off

before you load up a custom rom, make a nandroid of your stock rom
and i think there is a program with aroma somewhere in the forum where you can control your boot loader to change the word at the top from unlocked to locked, or relocked
Well, all I need now is a way to re-lock the bootloader and get it at the version it is at and a way to remove root so that I can flash my first ROM

You can unlock the bootloader and flash any custom rom but you will not be able to flash a different RUU other than your carrier branded one.
You can only brick your phone if you don't follow instructions carefully. Check the Dev section - there is a step by step guide to rooting your phone.
but , If you have unlocked via HTCDev the this would have removed your CID in which case yes you should be able to flash the WWE RUU on a branded device.
If you have not unlocked and are still running stock then no it wont work.
I've unlocked via htcdev and my cid stayed the same 001. There's a few threads which all say the same thing, and that is we need s-off to change our cid

Why do you need RUU to flash on an unlocked device. U have a choice to flash custom roms from Android development section. These custom roms from our developers are fully optimized to flash on.

[Q] Boot loader

Hi. I have a Htc one x that was locked to Three. I got unlock code which worked now on Orange ( EE). I tried to unlock bootloader with no success. Do i have to do something because the phone was locked to Three. Please help as i want to root phone.
Gary.
In what way did it not work ? Assume you followed the HTCdev method.

I don't know if it resets the phone locked to 3 again when you unlock the bootloader, because unlocking the bootloader will reset the phone back to stock and i can't tell you if your carrier unlock code will still be active after this.
But what did you try to unlock the bootloader anyway ?

Thanks for the quick reply. I used the HTC Development method. Is there a way to root without the dev bit.
No, unlocking the bootloader must be done with the htcdev site.....did you get the unlock code.bin file ?
Mr hofs is right mate use htcdev site, plenty of guides knocking around on xda, I was locked to three but followed all the steps unlocked bootloader rooted, changed hboot and flashed a new Rom, daunting at first but so worth it you will see the difference.....good luck!

Another tip mate for the whole root thing use hasoon2000's all in one tool kit really easy if Ur not at ease with the whole adb thing cheers

I would learn adb/fasrboot....much easier to get out of trouble !
Example :
You use a toolkit to unlock and flash a custom recovery, for instance TWRP. Then you make your nandroid backup and running custom roms.....all no problem then you need to return to stock and need to flash the boot.emmc.win (the kernel/boot.img) but the toolkits only supports boot.img file .......
Get the problem there ?

Thats true buddy, I admittedly had to use fastboot when returning to stock for an OTA update a while back (it didn't like cwm) so returned to stock with stock recovery and then later flashed another rom etc....I stand corrected - IF u need to return to stock!

I get ya ... no worries
I used the toolkit originally but learnt commands now. You then understand what your actually doing to your phone and are less likely to brick it or at least have a better chance to fix it if it does go Pete tong.

[Q] unlock bootloader - root - flash custom rom

Hello,
Will unlocking my bootloader break the guarantee ?
I did a lot of flashing on the m7 , but have completely forgotten adb commands.
Can someone help me?
At first I will need to make a backup so I can go back if I screw things up how ?
And what was the url for htc bootloader unlock ? Htcdev something I guess.
Can someone who has the time help me a little bit.
regards MrCaligula / Norway
1: yes it may break warranty
2: Google for adb/fastboot minimal and check the stickied guides that's so easy to find
3: Google for HTC dev and it will be on top
Bootloader now unlocked
What is next ? Do I need S-off ?
To simply flash a custom rom s-off is not mandatory
If you on the other hand want to flash a custom ROM build for a higher firmware than the one you're running s-off is needed to flash the firmware corresponding to the custom ROM you like.

Thanks for your help I flashed the Ehndroix rom now . Seems good so far
Still on S-off I came from Stock 4.4.3
