Are there any devices from December? (serial no starting with 512...) - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had one 510... device and zweo 511 devices - all were too yellowish (one was actually visibly cooler, but greenish and with ugly uneven backlight).
I'm wondering if the display issues will be finally fixed some day with a later revision.

I have a device manufactured in 12/2015 and the serial starts with 512.

@teamshao
great, do you have any build quality issues (creaking back, discolouring etc), and is your display very warm, too?

No, I also had one from 11/2015 that had a creaking back. This one does not creak. The screen looks good. The only weird thing is that the LED is more noticeable under the lower grille, as if it is closer to the back of the grille. It's probably just manufacturing variation.

Thanks, well that may also be coincidence... There seems to be a huge variation in quality which is a sad situation.
I remember the Nexus 4, there was a slightly modified revision in January or so, maybe LG is fixing newer 5X, but who knows when...
My current device does not creak at all (yet), feels very solid, but still yellowish screen, I hope I'm getting used to it.

Date of manufacture doesn't change anything.
Yellowed display is not on every device and does not change based on date of manufacture. For instance both these 5x were manufactured in October.

Yes, I know, but they may change something in manufacturing process to produce more consistent results in the future.
I had 3 devices, two like the yellow in the picture and one in between with a slightly greenish hue - never seen a clean white. I know many displays are calibrated too cold, but I compared to several devices which are said to be close to 6500.
I don't think Amazon will send me 5 or 10 other devices until I'm happy... so I was wondering if it makes sense to send it back and wait two months, then buy again. But my current one feels very solid, no creaking at all yet. Might be a risky decision....

Amazon stopped after 2 replacements (or 3, one i sent back was from another order, i don't know if they took that one into account as well) and told me that they will check their stock (haha..), but i had the most problems with dead pixels (4 orders from google..), one had a darker area on the display, one was very yellow.
Now i get another one from another store which will arrive today/tomorrow. Fingers crossed, this is the 9th device.
1/8 was okay, but i sent that one back because of the lower fire sale price the other ones had, how naive.

Ha, that was a bad decision!
I'm curious about that new device...

I have an October one with a perfect screen and a quiet back, am I just lucky? My S4 screen seems more yellow than this one.

@ShishkaBerry
I think you are
@phoboz
Did your device arrive? I'm curious if this is ok...
I personally send my 3rd device back to amazon and ordered in the Google store. It's 80€ more expensive, but I'm fed up. Trying 1-2 devices and maybe give up on the 5X then.
I was able to measure the color temperature using a Sony NEX camara and manal white balance (which seems to be quite accurate when compared to other light sources with known color temperature). my 5X seems to be around 5900-6000K which is definitely too yellow, so that is not subjective...

December device here, 512 bought through BestBuy, no build quality issues noted over the first 2 days. Quiet back, display not yellow.

Ordered one from Google - the next day they reduced the price by 50€, so I ordered another one.
Got two devices from October (510...) - WTF, Google?
The first (more expensive) one has a (for me) perfect white at 6500K - I love that screen. (But a slightly creaky back... but I can live with that)
The second (cheaper) one has a 6500K green tinted display - looks ugly.
I'm already thinking about paying 50€ more and keep that perfect screen. Gnaaaaaaaa!
Asked Support what to do.

Every replacement device I received so far the screen was far worse than my original. All replacements have been from September and the last one was an October build.

Quick update:
Google called back today, I can keep the more expensive device (which has an excellent screen) and get a 50€ refund. Awesome support

Are you purposely looking for defects?

Serious question.
Personally I'm becoming pretty OCD with my phone and its defects (or lack of). My girlfriend claims not to be able to see the flicker, or the gap near the screen.
I think my obsession with having a perfect device is stopping me enjoying the phone fully.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
You will see faults without having to look for them, they will be obvious, so relax and enjoy your phone
No. I'm just using my phone like the vast majority of people.
I know what you mean, and it kind of ruined the experience of the 'new phone' feeling for me.
Got my second HOX today. Found a very vaguely present yellow bar on the screen on the top. Still doesn't feel as good.
It just sucks to know your phone has flaws, or could potentially develop those over time.
Nope I'm not looking for defects at all, if something goes wrong and I notice it then I will look into it but I won't meticulously inspect the device that's for sure.
Only defect I have is the flickering on light grey colors and such.........really a pain in the ass now and makes me OCD about it.
Battery life has also been sub-par.....to say I'm satisfied and happy with the device. I'd say like a 50% because battery life is really annoying.....it's worse than my Galaxy Nexus by a good amount and the Galaxy Nexus wasn't even amazing with battery life (but it was pretty darn good).

everyone SHOULD look for defects. I only would have accepted the issues the One X has on a low budget device. Some people simply can't see stuff like this. It's like when I try to show people the difference with video playback on a display/tv/projector in 24hz compared to 60hz to show the stutter/jitter few people can see it. I see it really clear.
I always look for defects, and i hate my self for it, because stupid things like maybe a tiny lager gab with probably doesn't mean a S....
I work for a Danish Operator and in the last 7 days i've sold MANY ONE X... the last 4 days i looked closer one every ONE X when preparing them for the customers...
And guess what over 50% of the ones i sold had a tiny tiny larger gab between the screen and polycarbonat cover, so tiny larger that i need to hold it directly to the sun or really bright light to see it...
when i look back almost every model i can think of by HTC had a small difference around the screen and cover. even my previous Galaxy Nexus actually all three of them..
so right now i have my ONE X with a tiny larger gab at top, display with NO flicker but a tiny bit warmer white colored screen...
would i exchange it NO not this time, the next may have flicker or something els that annoys me a bit...
I don't think i can recall that i EVER had a perfect product...
hmm when i think of it thats not true.. my ONE S is perfect so why do i prefer ONE X, I really don't know..
ONE S seems faster in every day use, the material is nicer... but hey it's because it SO perfect thats make me keep my ONE X... or probably the larger screen
Simple. Don't ever expect a perfect device and be happy for what it is.

Backlight bleed anyone??

I had the same problem on my old N7 and went through 2 of those as well...
I've got some pretty bad backlight bleeding at the top/center of the screen. Literally looks like a dark grey to black gradient across the status bar. Other than that the screen looks pretty good. I say pretty good because I still think Asus could take a tip from Samsung in the display dept. But better color reproduction and contrast than the old N7 and love the 19x12 res. I'm gonna really enjoy reading on this thing once i get a good one. I just can't handle backlight bleed; it's a pet peeve of mine. It's going back to Best Buy tomorrow and I hope they have one more in stock for me. To anyone buying one, I would open it in store and check it out before leaving. My Best Buy is 30min and a load of traffic away.
Anyone else having this problem?
No backlight bleeding like my old nexus had. I haven't noticed any problems with mine , they really upped the quality with that $30 increase from last year

i think google's letting asus too much on the free rein. there's been better quality control on the previous nexuses, apart from asus. do try to chck out how sammy made the n10. that's what we can compare with n7 (both) and cry and curse asus.
seeing all that, I'm waiting for the next batch to come out, since I don't have enough reaources to replace a device once bougjt, so I just won't be taking any chances.

My original N7 has backlight bleeding along the left side, most noticeable on the bottom. Wife's has similar backlight bleed. Seems like some of this has nothing to do with batches. I got my original N7 in December, long past the first batches.
Just seems like they have some quality issues. Like the three org N7s that I went through before hitting on one that didn't have screen lift. I did finally get one, but it took some effort and returns on my part.
As for my newly purchased second generation N7, there are a few problems with it. Aside from very minor light bleed that is only visible in a black room, light bleed is not one of the issues.
I do hope that the second generation problems are worked out in subsequent batches, because the screen itself is a beautiful thing.
there is backlight bleed top center

I have a 16gb second gen nexus 7 gotten from staples..and i see noticable back light bleed towards the top center just like the user here is reporting....im hoping in a few weeks they correct this...im waiting for the 32 gig version anyway...this will go back to staples..the screen though is vastly improved except for that bleed i've noticed....and depending on how you hold display you see weird blue colors and like a sunset red....occassionally

Agree. I have my 32GB that's going back for different reasons. I'll just wait it out and watch everyone here, to see when these issues are minimized. Screen's amazing. Way better than anything else I've ever seen.

as I said, google's probably giving asus free rein too much, and asus is putting all that axe on our necks. They should be considerate about quality, because quality only is what matters. see all the good specs going down the drainage.
Mine only has it at the top like you, but its only noticeable during really dark scenes in a poorly lit area. Most IPS display will show some sort of light bleed. Speaking from experience, if its not one thing, then its another. Everything else is excellent. No dead pixels, popping sounds from the speaker, etc, etc. I swapped my N4 3 times before I got a unit that I thought was pretty good. And even then, its still not perfect since it too has some light bleed. If it really bothers you, then prepare yourself for what could possibly be a goose chase. :good:

M9 display and other problem

Hi, Bought M9 yesterday after 30 minutes decided to sell. main reason was display. İt felt some how step back from M8. Display is greenish, not as bright also viewing angles is worst reminded me LG G2. also when you tilt screen little bit you get rainbow effects i assume thats becuase display not being in cell. but that happened to me o M7 few weeks later i found really good display maybe should never buy new phoenes as they come out. i did have around 300 mb update after that phones was still hot, and camera was not good.
Why did i buy M9 i like HTC as company i would buy their product instead of Samsung but now i feel a little disapointed. i think they could have made phone better but instead went lazy.
Before i get bashed i put picture of phone
Its the same screen as the M8, I had concerns with the colour depth as its not quite as vibrant as the M8, although that's down to the configuration in the display driver, should be easy to tweak at either htcs end or when kernel source drops.
I have not seen any rainbowing or angle issues so you may have picked up a duff/faulty screen

I really do hope so! I will build a kernel using the m8 display drivers if it doesn't... When looking through the camera its actually a little more true to life than the m8 was
The screen on mine is slightly better than my M8. Much better white balance. It's not at all green. The phone has it's faults, lots of them, but the screen is not one of them.
Sorry to hear that and at least you gave it a try. By now I am very much hesitant getting the M9. I love HTC product; coming from Nexus 5; I promised myself to only by HTC phones again. The m8 has spoiled me so much with build quality and the software optimization. By now M9 has shown its definitely not a step forward from M8. I say this because look at the changes at HTC; CEO resigned and also the main designer left; plus all the negative reviews speaks for itself. Hopefully by now HTC learned their lesson.

So I received my m9 a couple days ago and can really notice the green tint, haven't decided if I wanna return it because I don't know if this is normal, or something that can be fixed through software tweaks or what. I talked to Tmo and they said it was noted across the board that the displays have a greenish tint, basically told me to wait it out for software fix since I'm most likely to get another one like this. My m8 has had a blueish tint bit never really notice it until I play with a different device for a bit.

Nexus 5x display yellow?

Hello there, could you notice the display of 5x is yellow? From the unboxing and review videos, i can see all of them seems quite yellow when compared to other phones.
Could you give your comments on this? If there are photos provided would be appreciated.
That's just an illusion caused by the camera as mentioned in the Pocket Now review, my display looks fine.

I have two 5Xs one in quartz and one on carbon. My quartz has a much cooler screen than the carbon. My carbon's whites looks more of an off white and overall the screen appears more dull and not as bright as the quartz. Colors are not as saturated in my carbon as on my quartz one. My quartz one was made in Oct 2015 and my carbon in September

my first instinct upon powering up my phone and looking at the screen was "damn, this looks really yellow". at this point, I think it's combination of two things: the first being the different in color temperature between this screen and my HTC M8, and the second being tha tthe screen is just flat out a bit warm. After a couple days of use (i got my 5x on friday night), it doesnt feel nearly as yellow as at first, and i really being it's just a matter of what your eyes are used to, but it certianly does have a warmth to it that i was not expecting. there's also been a bit of chatter on teh tint to the screen, so it seems this just varies slightly from phone to phone. I'll say this, I certainly didnt buy this phone because of my faith in LG's build quality or QC. That (and, sadly, Sense) will be the two things I struggle most to move on from when leaving my M8 behind.

If you've ever had an lcd screen calibrated for color accuracy, you'd see that warmer colors are actually more "natural" and realistic than the cool/blue tones you're accustomed to seeing on most lcd's

Yeah you're right. I've had LCDs calibrated (TV, monitors, etc), but never a phone. Know of any good ways to do that? I know of apps that let you tweak the color temps and such, but never to truly calibrate it.
And I just realized I forgot to mention that now when I look back at my M8's screen, it looks quite blueish and sterile. I have no qualms with the 5X screen as I see it now.
It looks much better for the quartz one. It provides a little evident that the latter one produced in Oct is better. The unboxing videos are the first batch devices. Keep an eye on this to see if they really improved for the latest produced devices. Thanks for the sharing!

I just compared my N5X with an iPhone 6. The iPhone screen looked so bright and white/blue(cool). It hurts my eyes. But N5X is very warm. White and balance setting in cameras probably, making it a lot worse. It's much calmer to my eyes.
I have read that a higher kelvin white will keep you up at night, some are saying these new LED bulbs with the whiter whites are not good for the brain/sleeping. I noticed the whites are not as blue as another device, but compared to my Moto X it is not as yellow as the Moto X. When using the 5X and not looking at another device the whites seem very white to me.
I'm returning mine for a replacement or refund not liking the yellow hint to the display I have read Google have replaced handsets if purchased from the store due to yellow screen as I got mine from cpw im within my 14 day return as only got Sunday so shouldn't have any issue I came from a Galaxy A3 and screen was much better

It's a good phone don't get me wrong but could of been better I think for price of the 32GB you can have a Moto X pure both are not perfect but X pure bit more bang for buck although I miss the lightness and fingerprint scanner of the 5x I do how ever love having a more premium device with decent screen and camera and turbo charging is awesome feature for me if the 5x had a better screen and extra GB of ram it would be a keeper I think

Ok here are some comparison pictures.. My original Quartz 5x, then the yellow tinted carbon 5x, with my replacement carbon 5x and a few shots comparing both the yellow tinted carbon and the replacement carbon with the 6P. Now seeing all 3 5x's side by side my quartz seems to have a redish tint compared.. odd.. I'm happy with the screen on my replacement carbon

Mine looks just fine. It may have a slightly warmer temp than my S6 edge screen, but that one almost looks too blue. The colors on my 5X look more natural. Maybe I have a good one?
Wait for custom kernels with color adjustments options. It's simpler...

Blue Shift Still An Issue

I have read/watched a lot recently about how the Pixel 2 XL's issues have been "fixed" so I thought I would try one for myself. The first screen that comes up when you boot the device is all white, so I had a chance to immediately see if the blue shift was in effect. I am sorry to say it is TERRIBLE. As you can see from the attached image, my Nexus 6P shows a white screen while the Pixel 2 XL screen is quite blue, and the effect is worse in person.
This is very disappointing, and I wanted to let everyone know that this is still an issue. I guess it's not true that Google did something to fix this issue on the hardware/manufacturing side. About 2 hours after delivery, I already have everything boxed up and ready to ship back to Google. The Google chat rep tried to give me the line of "This is how advanced POLED technology works" but I told her to just look at the picture again. My Nexus 6P has almost no blue shift at all even at more extreme angles. Just sitting on the table in front of me should not make the screen turn blue. I use my phone like that a lot, so this would be something I would notice often on the Pixel2 XL
I have owned more Android and Nexus phones than I can count, and I am not trying to hate here. I just want to voice my disappointment and communicate to the community that this issue is still a thing.

I never heard it was ever fixed just that it is not really a nusense for people wanting all the other benefits vs the 6p I still prefer the colder pixel 2xl white over the warm 6p white but the Sony Xperia xz2 phones have the best I have seen but I have not seen newer Samsung phones that claim to have the best screen
Over the 3 I would still choose the pixel 2xl

I wish I hadn't bought a pixel... So much regret

Yeah i notice the same. But honestly in day to day use it isn't bad enough for me to consider another phone. I bought mine in November from VZW so it may be a newer model with this fixed to some extent

I just got the phone delivered TODAY. I checked the IMEI and the manufacture date is January 9th. That's not terribly recent but still months after release.
I might order another one after I get a refund and see if it is the same, but that would be my last attempt. I should not have to gamble and rely on luck to get a phone that I can use at a slight angle and not have the damn thing turn blue. This is ridiculous.
I never look at my phone in such extreme angles. If anything, your Nexus 6P looks too yellow to me in that angle. It's far from the best but head on it's fine enough for me.

I don't think having the phone on the table in front of me like that is an "extreme angle". I put my phone on the table next to my laptop like that all the time, so I would notice this daily. True I would not have a Nexus 6P sitting next to it to compare it to, but now that I already know the screen on this Pixel 2 XL turns blue my brain will keep making the association.
HAZ DISSAPOINT!!!

Just use the phone. It's not that serious.
I just received my phone this week...I have VERY slight blue showing at off angles, not enough for me to exchange or care. Previous phone was a Moto X Pure....This phone is amazing.
64gb black
Manufacture date Feb 6
Just use the phone dude. It's been released for almost 6 months and you still complaining about such silly issue? If it's that bad for you then simply pick another phone.

I guess I didnt realize people were still complaining about this. Ive had my P2XL for about 4 months now and this has not been an issue, let alone a deal breaker for me at all. And I too came from the 6P. In fact, I had to get my 6P out a couple of weeks ago, and having them side by side, I cant believe the difference in the screens. The P2XL looks much better to me. Is there some blue in the screen at extreme angles? Yes. Does it detract from the performance of the phone or any of its features? No. The 6P was, in my opinion, the best phone Ive owned of many, many, many Android phones, but the P2XL has easily replaced it as my #1.
Dont bother getting another one. We'll just see another post saying, "A week later and blue shift still not fixed! ZOMG!".

1. "Still complaining about..." : How can I "still complain" about a device I just bought?? It just arrived yesterday. I bought one and gave it a chance before commenting.
2. "... such silly issue": It's not a silly issue to me, and for you to say so is kinda rude. Who are you to tell me what is a deal-breaker on a device I spent my own money on?
3. "Simply pick another one"?? What other 6-inch, Google-made, clean-Android device is there? There is no other choice.
You and others can accept the device for what it is if you want. I don't want to spend $700 for a device that has an issue I will notice every day for the next 1-2 years.

1. You knew what you were getting into. It's had the shift since day one.
2. You didn't even give the phone a chance. Your pic was still at the setup screen. Seriously, you can get used to it.
3. He didn't say pick another Google phone. There's a good handle of alternatives with better screens if it is that serious to you.

This is good info, so thanks!! Your phone was made about a month after mine, so maybe that has an effect. I hope that if I get another one it is like yours and I can keep it.

I got mine last week from Google, black 64 and it has way less of a shift than my brothers v30. I would say mine totally shifts blue at about 45 degrees from dead on, his does almost right away. His phone is 3 months old now. Not sure of his build date. Mine was December '17
In my experience oled panels always experience some shifting. Even the iPhone x I've handled.

Looking at your picture the Pixel 2 XL looks better. Sure, it looks to have a very cool color temperature but it's also next to a Nexus 6P which is too warm(reddish). The Pixel 2 XL in that picture is much closer to neutral white. Also that's a pretty extreme angle. Mine is about the same at that angle and at normal viewing angles it looks great. It certainly isn't the BEST display I've seen in my entire life in terms of color temperature but it is good. Certainly better than the Nexus 5X I had before which was too cool even at direct viewing and better than the Nexus 6P which is too warm.

You will get a colour shift on almost any AMOLED device you can purchase. I have two Galaxy Note 8 phones sitting next to me, and they both shift red and pink off angle. So would you rather have a slightly cool shift when you look at your phone off angle? or a red / pink hue?
The S8+ shifts as does the S9+.
I notice it, but it does not bother me, as it is NOT an issue.
Use it for a week or two, don't obsess over it, use the display head on like 99% of people do, and you will forget it soon enough.
Cooler displays are much better than the reddish or yellowish displays of iphones or samsungs.

Thank you very much for telling me how to use my device, that I paid for and own. It never would occur to me to NOT use the device the way I want to, but to DO WHAT OTHER PEOPLE DO REGARDLESS OF WHAT I WANT. That makes so much sense I don't know why it never occurred to me. /s
As for "other screens have color shift too", that's irrelevant. Yes, my Nexus 6P has some, but it's slight and only at really crazy angles. That's why I posted a picture of the two side-by-side. I had both of them in my hands, and compared them myself. One (6P) had a very acceptable level of shift, the other (Pixel 2 XL) was not acceptable.
I guess the good news for me is that so many of you have phones that don't show much blue shift. That means that if I order another one, I have a decent chance to get one that's better.
My Pixel 2 XL has the issue but I never notice it. I look at my phone normally, not on a weird angle that means I cannot see the top right corner. That's the bit I don't get, you have to twist the viewing angle to a position that makes using the screen useless anyway and then rant it's got a blue tint. You can't see the text properly anyway so why do you want to use your phone at the angle? Lots of screens have tints if you view them at the WRONG angle.
How's this for an issue?:
I've had my 2 xl for about 2 weeks. It's a refurb from Amazon deal.of the day.
The display generally has the colder blue whites, which I like, that my preference. But, sometimes while using it, the white background on the screen will suddenly switch to this warm-ish white, seems pinkish to me. I'll try to use my phone off axis when it does that because I prefer the cold blue whites (like my essential phones display, - I LOVE that display)
Anyone else experiencing anything like this? I googled it and am not seeing anything - other people comaining about blue shift. (I'd like it to have 'blue shift' all the time lol)
FWIW: all the refurbs Amazon sold seem to be VZW branded, and I'm on Jan 05 2019 SW update. (Oh, and of course I'm pissed the refurbs are VZW, didn't know until it arrived, was so looking forward to unlocked bootloader and root and joining custom ROM community again.
