weird microphone/headset thing - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a story to tell. Not a problem that I want to solve. Just sharing my experience.
I'm using my Sennheiser MX 365 earbud with my Nexus 5X a lot. The earbud does not have a microphone nor a button. Simple as needed.
Some things related to this configuration:
- Sometimes 5X launches the Google Now voice search when I plug the MX in. Only rarely.
- I can use MX to listen the phone calls and I can talk into the 5X holding it to my mouth. Both end of the phone works this way.
- Sometimes the other side can't hear anything at all. Maybe 5X expect sound from MX?
- Sometimes the other side can't hear me if I don't use MX.
Maybe the last 2 microphone issues can be network related because if I switch between 2G-3G-4G, then it solves the issue.
Also sometimes I try to mute-unmute my mic during the call, switch on-off the speakerphone. This can solve the problem also.
I'm using completely stock rom and phone app from play store, latest version.

[Q] Bluetooth headset buttons not responding

I have a Verizon G3 but figure this forum gets more eyeballs, and perhaps this is a universal Bluetooth issue.
I use the LG Tone+ HBS-730 headset with my phone. If I go into a music app and start playing music through my headphones with the app, no problem. But, let's say I pause music for a while, or turn the headphones off for a bit. I turn the headphones back on, press the play button on the right side, and nothing happens. The headset is still on - I can long-press a button and get the double-beep, but my music won't play. Sometimes it does, but most of the time, it doesn't. I switched from the stock Music player to Rocket Player, which has proven to be a little more successful.
Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere, or is this a common BT occurrence? Control is through the AVRCP BT profile, I believe. I know on my G2 I'd sometimes lose control sync with my phone, where I couldn't skip or pause the track through my headphones. This new problem seems like a magnification of that problem.
Overall, I do find the BT performance a little worse than the G2. I get more audio drops when the phone is in my pocket, but this is when I'm outside and BT is not great outside in general.
Thanks everyone - I have five days to decide if I want to return this phone, between this and some signal problems.
bluetooth connects. calls ok. media plays on device.

I come from the philippines and i have the g3 also. my bluetooth connection was fine it connected to my car and headset but now it only receives calls but does not play music through my bluetooth headphones. when i press the play button on my headset it plays on the device itself. checked under bluetooth setting and call and media and audio was checked.
my device is rooted. i did a factory reset but the problem remains unfixed. please help. i have installed g3 tweaksbox but i dont see any mods that is related to music apps. i dont know what to do. i have considered unrooting and flashing stock rom.
Also interested in this, as I have the same issue but my car.
Op, did you ever find a fix, or work around?
OP
Do you have any other BT programs loaded? I had something similar when I had the Sony app and a Garmin app loaded. Both use BT to connect to their devices and they were interfering. I removed the Garmin one and my play/pause button started working again

Anyone having bluetooth audio problems?

So I've been having some problems in general with bluetooth performance. A couple of days ago I was trying to sync a wireless bluetooth speaker with my 5X and the 5X couldn't even find the speaker when the speaker was in pairing mode. My tablet and HTC ONE do not have problems finding the speaker. I finally got it pair after multiple attempts. I then launched Amazon music and tried to adjust the volume after audio was playing. I clicked the volume down button all the way to zero and the speaker was still quite loud. Clicking the volume up button didn't really do anything. The audio gets slightly louder, but it's not very discernible unless you're comparing the audio at 10% versus 60-70%. Anyone else having similar problems?

They changed the way volume adjustments work with Bluetooth devices.

For me, I noticed that I just need to control the volume on the device and not try to mess with it on the phone.

Thanks. It looks like this may indeed be a bug though, whether it's with the accessories or Android OS.
, there seems to be a bug in the feature's implementation on some Bluetooth accessories. What users are experiencing is an extremely loud volume, even at the lowest volume setting. With the slider moved all the way down, the volume remains too high, which makes the accessory unusable if you enjoy a more temperate sound. And remember, this is a unified volume setting, so even if you press the headset's Vol- button, nothing changes

When I paired with my speaker the music turned on so loud I nearly crapped my pants. Didn't even realize it was possible for the speaker to go that loud.

Not me. Everything working as designed. BT speaker paired just fine.
I'm having bluetooth issues - from day one and 6.01 doesn't help. My 5x often doesn't play through previously paired devices. It goes through the motions and shows a connection but no sound. I usually have to switch bluetooth off then back on again. Really annoying.
Hmmm, I haven't had a problem with the situation you described. I am currently having an issue over what audio is being pushed over bluetooth. In my car I am listening to some music via bluetooth, and I get a phone call during playback, I swipe right and answer the call, but I answered the call and my music resumes and I can't hear my call. Very odd but a consistent issue since the 6.0.1 update.
Since I accepted OREO onmy Nexus 5x, I also have BT issues both with my car multi-media and my earphones. I tried reboot the nexus and it did not help. I"ll try to repair the device.

A SERIOUS issue with Bluetooth connectivitiy

I have the Tmobile Variant.
My setup is Plantronics Voyager 5200 (call audio only)
Logitech UE Megaboom (media only)
What? After making a call the music doesn't play on the BT speaker but plays on phone.
How? I have Pandora playing, I received a phone call or make a phone call and sometimes getting a notification from Hangouts too, somehow drops the MEDIA ability of the speaker and it reverts to my phones speaker. Even though I still see that the BT speaker is connected. I had SoundAbout on, so I disabled that, it still happened. Outloud as well.
Can anyone confirm that this is happening to them as well.
Its easy replicated. Just get a headset and a speaker. have one for media and one for phone calls and it should mess up like it does for me

I just tried it, and it worked as expected. It was a bit more difficult to get the phone to believe I wanted the split setup than I recall from the Note 2. I am to be able to end up variously with multiple devices connected for either call or media audio, and sometimes the media audio disappearing into the ether. However, once connected correctly, I had Pandora playing on an Exogear speaker, and took a phone call on Motorola P311 headset. Once the call ended, Pandora resumed on the speaker. I don't have Outloud or SoundAbout.

Can you do it more than once,
I'll try it more extensively in the morning.

ugh, so I tred again..and somehow it isn't effecting me.
Freaking weird..I'll update teh post if I can recreate, cause apparently I can't...
Ok, So apparently its an app doing it, related to SoundAbout actually
I even installed SoundAbout and OutLoud and did multiple calls. No problem. On the other hand, both look like good apps, and I'm enjoying some Pandora which I usually don't turn on at the office.

Pixel XL Car Bluetooth Calls Static/Noise

I've been having issues with bad static/noise in voice calls when connected to my car's Bluetooth. Music streaming over Bluetooth is fine, however. Does anyone else experience this issue. I used to have an S6 paired to my car and it was perfect for both voice calls and music.
My audio for like music is fine but tried making a car handsfree the other day for the first time and couldn't hear the other person who said they didn't hear me either. I had to click on the dialer app to switch out it to phone speaker and then back to Bluetooth then it worked.
It's been like this since I first got the phone...it's almost unusable for phone calls in the car. I wonder if this is a software or hardware defect and if it will be corrected in a future update. I don't want to have to RMA this phone if I don't have to.
I'll try your workaround, acheney...thanks for the tip
Pixel XL connects via Bluetooth to both of my cars without problems. And call audio is fine both ways.
I have had zero issues with music streaming or phone calls. 2014 Infiniti q50
I'm having this issue too. Music and video play fine, but when someone calls i can hardly understand what they are saying due the static. Was hoping the update would fix the issue. I'm not sure what to do at this point.
Same issue. Audio over BT is fine. GPS navigation over audio was playing up, but now appears to be ok. The moment I call someone (or they call me) the call is all garbled and I have to switch to speakerphone.
My Bluetooth earpiece however works fine. Not sure if headunit issue or phone bt stack.
i have this same issue. so annoying. so far there's no solution?

None that i have found. Flashed AptX codec and still have same issue. Don't think it is hardware because the phone works fine when paired with other Bluetooth items like speakers, headphones, my watch, and other car stereos. Just doesn't like my factory pioneer unit in my Tc for some reason.
Audio issues for me have always been carrier issues.
Redialing the number usually fixed the call
I ended up finding if I mounted my phone far away from the head unit (near the door/drivers window for example) and tilted the phone in a weird way, the calls were fine.
I don't quite understand it, but seems like there is interference from the head unit when using BT to make calls, which for some reason isn't a problem when you play music (or GPS navigation is on).
Either the Pixel needs better shielding or there's something borked with the Bluetooth chipset.
I would like to use wireless headphones, but the in-channel headphones with a large battery and with good sound have not yet been invented
Yes!
I've only made a few calls over my cars bluetooth, but yesterday I ran into this:
Conversation was fine for several minutes, and then every word the other person said came through as static. When they paused between words or stopped talking, it was quiet. But as soon as they said a word again, it was static.
I toggled the call back to handset and it was fine. So I switched back to bluetooth, and it was fine for a minute or two, and then it became static voice again. I switched back and forth again and it was back to normal voice and remained that way.

[Pixel 2 XL] Bluetooth microphone issues

Has anyone tested the microphone on their bluetooth sets yet with the Pixel 2 XL?
I'm scared I might have a defective phone. My bluetooth headset connects to my phone just fine, and even plays audio just fine, however, the microphone is not picking anything up. This means I can't use hands free calling, or hands free Google assistant.
I know it's not my bluetooth device because it works fine when connected to my older phone (Nexus 6P)
Has anyone else had trouble with doing microphone over bluetooth? I'm not sure if I need a replacement or just a software patch.
For reference, I use the LG HBS-1100 bluetooth headset.
http://www.lg.com/us/bluetooth-headsets-headphones/lg-HBS-1100-Silver-tone-platinum
Later today, I will try a different bluetooth device.
EDIT: I tried with my older pair, the LG HBS-750, same issue.
I've got a soundbuds tag headset, the connection speed is faster and my phone calls seem ok. I've only made like 2 calls so far though.
@Traceguy I've had several lg headsets and they all sucked. No could hear me or I was breaking up all over the place. Switched to the jaybird x3 and it's been perfect ever since.
Disclaimer: I'm on a Nexus 6. Waiting patiently for the 2XL to arrive next week...
I've talked with Google support, they helped troubleshoot, but nothing could be found out of the ordinary, and it's now being elevated to the next level support team. They have my phone number and will call me back when they find anything.
My Bluetooth version is up-to-date, but there is a update pending for my Pixel 2 XL, which hasn't made it to my phone yet. That may or may not help. IDK
I will get a friend later today to connect his bluetooth to my Phone and test the mic. Maybe it's a total LG issue.
I'm gonna say it's an LG issue. I went through 4 pair of the infinium headsets. All had issues with ppl hearing me. Even when paired to different phones.

I don't know much about how Bluetooth works, do Bluetooth devices use drivers similar to USB devices? Maybe the Pixel 2 XL is missing the necessary drivers for the LG HBS sets. That is something that can be fixed with a software update.
It's not an LG issue. It's happening with my car's head unit and others are reporting it in the Pixel User Community. This is one of a few strings that include it. https://productforums.google.com/fo...pPfDGvkNw;context-place=forum/phone-by-google

I'll just wait patiently to see what happens. I'm hopeful it's not a hardware defect with the bluetooth chip in my phone. I never use bluetooth car's head unit, for whatever reason it drops every few seconds or minutes. I'm driving a 2013 Charger, so I'd expect better results. I use aux, and thanks to the USB-C Dongle, I am not stuck without a way to play my music in the car, though without the microphone input from my headset, I can no longer tell Google which song to play.
I just came here to check.
I can place calls and be hear over bluetooth both on the car and my Sol Republic headphones.
Assistant can not hear over either. Assistant does work over a wired headset.
Support had me boot into safe mode, spoiler: Assistant won't even launch in safe mode, and factory reset which did not fix the issue.
They have no resolution at this time, but are looking into it and wanted me badly to leave feedback on the problem. I'd suggest anyone with the problem leave feedback as well.
At least I'm not the only one. They said I'm the first to call. ut then again they also said it coud be a hardware issue which I just can't see.
Mine, too. I have a Pioneer head unit. Playing is fine, Assistant is fine when not connected to Bluetooth, but Assistant just will not work over Bluetooth. I use this all the time so it's already driving me crazy and it's only been one day. (Same head unit worked fine with previous phones... Pixel 1, Nexus 6p, and OnePlus One.)
I'll add myself here as a +1... Same symptoms. Seems like microphone over BT doesn't work.
I have a Plantronics v5200 and it works for calls. But not for assistant. Sucks......it will activate assistant on a long press. But registers no sound. Works perfect on my original xl. So it's not the headset.
Also confirmed that it WILL work just fine if I launch it with "OK Google" instead of a squeeze or button. So it can work... Starting to seem like a bug in Assistant, which makes me hopeful for a decent fix.
@Anaelith Yes, but did you enable bluetooth Mic input from settings? If not, saying "Okay Google" will use the internal microphone in the phone instead of using bluetooth.
Go to Google Now settings > Voice > Enable "Bluetooth headset". This option "Records audio through Bluetooth headset if available"
That aside. I have tried bluetooth mic in a phone call and it works. I also tried Bluetooth audio with my Car's head unit and have not received a single drop. So the drop problem was related to my Nexus 6p.
Seeing as the mic works for phone calls, the problem seems to truly be software related.
Using a Jabra Eclipse, all settings correctly enabled. Not only does the Google Assistant not work, but neither does voice texting.
Worked fine on my original XL, so I know the earpiece is good.
Guess they better look into this...
Works fine on calls, won't work on assistant.
Man, I'm just gonna get my phones six months after release. It sucks to have to debug all this stuff for Google.
[UPDATE] I wrote here and I have a smaller pixel 2, but I have this issue too.
I'm another one. None of my Bluetooth microphones work on the pixel 2 XL, but do on my 6P
Hi everybody I think I may have found a possible fix/workaround
Settings\search\voice\Ok Google detection
Turn on ok Google anytime turn on trusted voice
(May have to do voice training)
Now when I press the call button and say "OK Google" then the command I hear it in my headset and it works. If I don't say ok google it doesn't work. It may be that it's actually my phone picking it up and not the Bluetooth mic but I hear the audio in my headset and can use it to search Google and play music. And it also picks up my audio in calls
I am on a regular pixel 2

I am facing the same issue. When connected to my BT headset or car BT, it's like my mic mutes after the hot word. Also, some phone calls can't hear me at all. Have to hang up and call back, then no issues. I've also contacted support and sent in feedback with system info to create a ticket.
I was having different issues as well, so I wiped my device and manually put all of my stuff back on (vs doing a restore), just to see if this fixes anything. Haven't retried BT yet, but will this evening. Other issues appear to be gone and the phone feels a lot smoother since doing this though. I think my restore from my OG Pixel didn't go so well.
