How to do a full binary backup via Send_command? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I want to start modifying the modem of the LG G4 (h815 SEA) with QPST and i want to make a full emmc backup before doing that.
Can i use the same command used for backup system and create a system.img, used in the rooting method? ( dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 bs=8192 skip=55296 count=529920 of=/data/media/0/system.img ) .
Why in this command is a "skip" option set for the first 55269 blocks? For full backup i should not use the skip option? This backups the EFS/imei/bootloader of the phone too?
if i dont use the skip option, i will be able to recover that full backup after an error even with that blocks backupped?

[REQUEST] Stock System Dump DJ20 & DL17

Similar to Adrynalyne's post, I would greatly appreciate anyone that could do this. What I am looking for is a dump from a completely stock system, the only requirement is that you be rooted. So, if ANYONE has a completely stock Continuum and would be willing to do this, that would be great. It would also be good to get this from both DJ20 and DL17 if possible, but even getting it from just one of the two would be great. Here are the steps to produce the files.
This is easiest to do via adb.
As root (#)
To backup the .lfs partition

It is possible as far as I know. The only thing this really requires is root access, the phone being activated shouldn't really do anything to the file dump. If you'd like to try to resurrect the dead phone, I'll be posting up a DJ20 Odin file later tonight or tomorrow morning that should hopefully work to fix it if all that is dead is the file system structure.

it if nearly impossible to brick the galaxy s phones (as long as you see the samsung logo even for a second), because we can use odin.. The only problem is getting the files to flash to fix it xP

Well... this phone is due back to the carrier (surprised they haven't called for it yet).... so at this point i would just like to prove proof of concept on the recovery piece. Download mode is all this phone will do so i'll be curious to see where we get with the odin imnuts is posting tonight..

rooting does void your carrier warranty...but not your samsung warranty...
however if you unroot/return to stock before returning your phone for whatever reason thats fine, they wouldnt know
*if* you brick your phone (nearly impossible to do with odin files) and try and return after a mod/rom gone bad....thats a big no-no...and the reason carriers/oems are locking down devices.
read up on rooting and the pros/cons before diving in...but for the most part if you are careful...its safe
I know how I know how I'm pretty experienced I have rooted 5 phones including hero cdma a droid erris to touch pro 2 2 different carriers also some minor a developing a bit but the only thing is I don't wanna have to send it samsung is something

i was wondering if anyone knows where i can get all of these as i sorta repartitioned the phone and lost everything on it. i can get it into download mode just fine just im missing alot of peices. it loads the factory.rfs fine but i think the bootloader is gone. i even managed to get it into clockwork but since the boot partition is kinda messed up it wont boot into anything else. since theres not a factory firmware that i can find im sorta stuck

How to backup your modem.

There is a modem for the optimus G here:

but it is from firmware 10b. You may want to try if it works better than your firmware. In this case, it is better if you make a backup of your current modem firmware, so you can go back to your version. Here I will write instructions to backup your modem, so you can restore it if you need.
Probably some of you know this already and feel like these are old news, but maybe we can build a modem firmware library.
You need root and a way to make an adb connection to your phone. If you cannot use adb, you can always use a terminal emulator on your phone, but this makes it a bit harder to type the commands. Also, this is for people who understand what they are doing. If after reading the tutorial you don't understand what the commands do, please don't try it. Or at least don't make me responsible if your phone bricks. Here we go.
NON NEEDED STEPS: This steps are here to show why this works.
1-Connect to your phone by adb.
2- On the terminal type :

You'll see the following (amongst other things):

This means that the partition containing the firmware is /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/modem and it is mounted at /firmware.
NEEDED STEPS
1- Connect by adb
2- On the terminal type

Check if confirmation is needed on the phone screen. If needed, accept.
3-
On the terminal type:

dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/modem of=/sdcard/modem.img
4-You will receive the following after some seconds:

adb pull /sdcard/modem.img
6-Now you have your backup.
HOW TO PACK THIS BACKUP FOR FLASH:
1-Download the file: cwm-lgog_e975-europe-10b_modem.zip from http://downloads.codefi.re/houstonn/lgog/modem/E975_E977_E976
2-Open the zip file and replace the existing modem.img with your file
3-Rename the file to something meaningful, like cwm-lgog_e975-europe-10f_modem.zip
After these steps, you should be able to flash any modem, knowing that you can go back to your old version.
You can upload the packed files here, so we can have a library. I will upload the modem from european 10f version here. I tested it and it works correctly, but I won't take any responsibility for what you do with this file.

I had no idea the IMEI is also there. I asked for it because the baseband version is also stored there and it's kind of odd to know I'm flashing the modem from EU-10f and the displayed version is TW-10a. I'm still hoping to solve that issue.

In fact, only the system, cache, and userdata partitions are actually filesystem partitions, and the cache partition is only a filesystem partition part of the time -- during radio and spl updates, it also is used as a simple data structure with a header field and a payload field...”

0x8000 – 0x800E IMEI (15Bytes)
0x8800 – 0x8824 Baseband version (37Bytes)
0x9000 – 0x9024 Baseband version (37Bytes)
CyanogenMod display the last one data on the Settings->About phone->Baseband version

You are totally right, this partition is not a filesystem. And it is mostly empty, it's all zeros except for some bytes. Most of it are text strings, but there are some small binary parts.
I think the 0x8800 - 0x8824 part is the original firmware version.
I wouldn't touch that partition, seems too dangerous .

freegee touches it. I see it made a backup and the difference is that it changed some bytes to 0 (offsets 0x40-0x52), then wrote ANDROID-BOOT at offset 0x4000. the rest is the same. it seems there's nothing like a crc so basically I could write whatever I want in that version field. the bad part is that as an user you'll never know what modem version you have since its version is not stored on the modem partition. I wonder who came up with this system and what was he thinking.

Some time ago I had the same issue. I solved it by modifying binary data on the misc partition. I was done this only on CM10.1 (F180K). I don’t know if it will work on other custom rom especially stock one.
Today I’ve done this one more time for preparation the following procedure. Maybe some one will use it on the future.
STEPS:
0. Backup the misc partition with your recovery. I was used CWM Advance Edition PhilZ Touch 5:
Backup and Restore-> Custom Backup and Restore->Custom Backup Job->Backup misc (*)
I’m not sure if all CWMs version support misc partition backup. TWRP not support it right now.
1. Dump the misc partition to /sdcard.

adb shell "dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/misc of=/sdcard/misc_orig.img"
OUTPUT:

2. Pull the image to your PC

3. Edit downloaded image file by your favorite hex editor (e.g. Notepad++ with Hex-Editor plugin)
Find both baseband name strings (mine were on offset 0x8800 and 0x9000) and change them (CM10.1 use the last one to set gsm.version.baseband in file /system/bin/fetch-swv).
REMEMBER:
- Do not use regular text editor (like Notepad or vi) – they can add some extra characters to the file.
- If possible try to modify only bytes responsible for original baseband name. If the new name is shorter, simply put spaces char (0x20) to clear unwanted chars. If you need to put the longer name, be careful. I don’t know the max size for this string. There are dozens of zeros behind the baseband name on my image file. So, for testing I added extra 20 Bytes text. The new baseband name was shown without problem.
4. Push the modified image file to your phone

Check if size of the original and modified files are equal.
5. Write the modified image to the misc partition

I just create a .zip to backup your modem / baseband / radio with your recovery (CWM / TWRP...)
ok as a newbie i cant figure out how to back up modem using adb... but after reading stuff what i did :
downloaded "Android Terminal Emulator" from playstore
open emulator in phone wrote as u mentioned :
su
dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/modem of=/sdcard/modem.img
after some seconds this came out :
131072+0 records in
131072+0 records out
67108864 bytes transferred in 15.229 secs
then :
exit
exit
after that i checked sdcard but there was no img file...
then i open file manager from the phone and there it was my precious :laugh:
size = 64mb... is it normal?
anyway .. made a new folder "modem" copied the img file into modem folder (using file manger) again connected the phone to pc copied the modem folder on my desktop...

Get back to JB and wait for your midel update
Back to JB I recovered the IMEI, but I have no carrier signal.
So do the root with towelroot, unlock custom recovery with FreeGee, do I back up EFS, and when I restart the machine it loses the IMEI.
So I install the modem and E97710b.kdz for E97710b model recover EFS and nothing happens, still no sign of the operator ...

How do I verify my system image backup?

I'm planning to root my G4 (LGH815 Germany) running v10b-EUR-xx. Before I'm attempting to root I took a backup using the following command:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 bs=8192 skip=55296 count=529920 of=/data/media/0/system.img
Is there any way of verifying the backup img before I proceed to root so I can be sure the backup is working in case something goes wrong during rooting?
There seems to be a difference between the size of my backup and the rooted image:
My backup: 4,341,104,640
Rooted img: 4,749,520,896
Why is there such a big difference?

The skip argument to dd tells it to skip reading 55296 blocks. Each block is 8192 bytes which means 55296*8192 bytes are being skipped, that brings it to total of 452,984,832 bytes, which is exactly the difference you have.
As for the reliability of your backup I suggest at least mounting it to see if structure is valid and files are there.

Definately try mounting it. Search for "mount android image in windows" if you are using windows, or just mount it in Linux.

In this case should I re-create my backup but put a skip count of 0 in to get a full image of the current system partition? Sounds like it would make more sense to have a full image rather than just a partial?

Really don't know but I guess there's a reason for that skip, maybe the start is something fixed (zeroed?) so it would be a waste of space reading it.

So I was able to mount my image in Ubuntu and I can see all the folders/files in there. In case I have to restore, do I have to use seek=0 and I used the recommended skip when I created the image?

DLM Backup is a NANDROID BACKUP IN DOWNLOAD MODE!
(DLM Backup = [D]own[l]oad [M]ode Backup)
The following does not require an unlocked device and so even no TWRP.
Believe it or not but you are able to backup full partitions nevertheless!!! :victory:
.. and all this even for partitions you usually have NO ACCESS TO (e.g. laf, aboot etc) and all this even without root ! wtf its not a dream its true! :victory:
It's really awesome especially for those having a locked device but still wanted to have a nandroid backup
or for those encountering the ILAPO (Infinite Loop Auto Power off or just called "bootloop issue") wanting to save their data!
The following will make full disk dumps of all or only the system essential ones of your device. Choose whichever option you need.
Preparation
First of all you should download FWUL ( https://tinyurl.com/FWULatXDA ).
Every other Linux is fine as well as long as you can handle it! (do not expect support from me then - I support FWUL only)
You may still should consider FWUL as it has everything onboard and is preconfigured to work with Android devices out-of-the-box.
Keep in mind the FWUL password as you need it for the sudo commands within the terminal later.
Once FWUL is running open a terminal (little black icon in the panel):

Leave this terminal window open - we need it in the next step.
Then boot your phone into download mode --> the following guide is 100% working and bulletproof:
take out battery and unplug USB cable
plugin USB cable to your PC (while battery ist still out)
wait until you see the missing battery icon (question mark within a battery symbol)
press Volume up and while keeping it pressed put battery in (take care that you do not press the power button)
keep pressing Volume up until you see "Download mode"
If that does not work for you try it this way instead:
unplug USB cable
power down device or pull out battery
put battery back
press Volume up and while keeping it pressed plugin USB cable to your PC (take care that you do not press the power button)
keep pressing Volume up until you see "Download mode"
Your phones screen should look similar to this afterwards:

You need a USB stick or disk which is big enough to hold the backup.
Depending on the method you need either a ~8 GB one or a 64 GB..
Plugin the USB stick and find out the path to it by just double clicking on the USB stick icon which appears on the desktop after plugging in the stick.
Then write down / copy the path to the stick as shown in the screenshot:
If you encounter problems with the above (e.g. no icon appears after plugging in the USB stick) you can do this in a terminal instead:

if you want to have a real FULL NANDROID (e.g. TWRP will not backup partitions like misc, persistent, persistent-lg etc)

Restore a previously taken backup or partitions of an already extracted KDZ
There are 2 methods available - choose the one matching your needs:
A) Restore a previously taken DLM Backup
B) Flash a KDZ / LGUP NG by sfX
Unfortunately this may not work on every firmware so you may try different firmwares then and you will receive the same error regarding communication port closing but in general it should work this way.
A) Restore a previously taken DLM Backup / Restore partitions from an extracted KDZ
To restore single partitions use the following
sudo python2 auth.py
sudo python2 partitions.py --restore /path/to/dumpfile partitionname
e.g.
sudo python2 auth.py
sudo python2 partitions.py --restore /tmp/misc misc (would restore the misc partition)
To restore ALL partitions in a folder
For this the best is to use the new LGUP NG kdzmanager which is explained in the next topic.
Install LGUP NG but skip the steps to extract a KDZ if you don't need it.
Then:
bash kdzmanager.sh --test --flash /path/to/imagefiles
(/path/to/imagefiles must contain your previously taken DLM backup files or an extracted KDZ)
This will just test flashing and not actually flash.
If that looks fine do it again but without --test parameter:
bash kdzmanager.sh --flash /path/to/imagefiles
B) Flash a KDZ / LGUP NG (next generation) by sfX
Forget LGUP to flash a KDZ from now on!
Just use my KDZManager
Features:
No worries anymore about those crappy DLL issues
Extract a KDZ
Test flashing partitions (dry run without actually flashing anything)
Flash partitions from a KDZ
when flashing avoid erasing/wiping userdata (keep your data between KDZ flashes)
Hint: not wiping userdata can occur in a bootloop when its not compatible with the ROM! So use that option with care.
will work on any Linux (but FWUL is the only supported)
Keep in mind that this is an early release and there are NO CHECKS like ARB or even if the device model matches with the KDZ but THIS WILL ALL COME (even with an option to override and flash regardless)
Roadmap:
GUI
Check for matching device model
Check for ARB
Instructions:
Boot FWUL (or your Linux but keep in mind that only FWUL is supported), choose language & login
Download the KDZ file you want to flash (we need to know the path later e.g. /home/android/Downloads/)
Open the folder LG
Connect device in download mode to the PC
Double click "LG laf NG" icon
Type in the new opened terminal:
sudo python2 auth.py
[*]sudo python2 partitions.py --list
If this lists your partitions then we can proceed with flashing.
Download my brand new kdzmanager tool in FWUL: (right click and save as)
When you are not using the persistent mode of FWUL: plug in a big USB stick (e.g. 32 GB or more) into FWUL and extract the attached file there
When you are using the persistent mode of FWUL: just extract it in your download folder
You need to know the full path so best is copying the path from the file manager (e.g. /home/android/Downloads/ ) or leave the file manager open there
Open another terminal (black little icon in the panel)
cd and directly behind this paste the path you copied (e.g. cd /home/android/Downloads/ )
press ENTER
bash kdzmanager.sh -x FILLINFULLPATH-TO-DOWNLOADED-KDZ
(e.g. bash kdzmanager.sh -x /home/android/Downloads/h811blablubb.kdz)
WARNING-1: Keep in mind that atm kdzmanager is not able to proof if you choose a compatible KDZ file for your device!
Check your device model and the KDZ twice!
WARNING-2: Keep in mind that atm kdzmanager is not able to proof your current ARB version so flashing an smaller ARB then your current one will BRICK your device.
Check ARB first: CLICK
If you understood the above 2 warnings proceed like this:
bash kdzmanager.sh --test --flash extracteddz/
(just like this as "extracteddz" is the path generated by the kdzmanager)
This will just test flashing and not actually flash. Let me know the results of this (copy & paste output)
if you can't wait the next step would be actually flashing ofc:
WARNING: by default the kdzmanager will not overwrite userdata (which would be like a factory reset) and I would recommend to leave it out always and better choose the LG factory reset menu (after flashing completed) if required. If you still want to flash it use --with-userdata as a parameter (can take a loooong time then btw).
bash kdzmanager.sh --flash extracteddz/
last step ( will be included in the next release): wipe your userdata:
sudo partitions.py --wipe userdata
Or just use the factory reset hardware key combo to do the same.
If you skip this step you may encounter a bootloop. If that happens you can at any time use the hardware key combo to boot into factory reset to fix that.

FAQ
1. Q: You get the error message: "Expected arrow in ls output" when executing lglaf
A: update to the latest version of lglaf (thx to @tulen_kobi for this patch!). For updating lglaf on FWUL check Q4.
If the error still persists your download mode version is not supported by lglaf. Its very likely that your carrier has a very strict policy activated in download mode. The only chance is to try other download mode version meaning to flash different KDZ files (on locked devices) or just the laf.img in fastboot (on unlocked devices).
On Nougat and when unlocked it is enough to just flash the laf.img of MM and you can use lglaf again.
2. Q: You get not an error but messages or files containing just "Hello, I am LAF. Nice to meet you."

ok here is the correct way to achieve this on FWUL v2:
cd ~programs/lglafng/
git pull
git checkout g4
then you're up2date and can try again while in this folder!

I'm so happy that you were able to finally get this working. It's dumping my system partition right now. I'll report back when it's done.
Also. You should note that the sudo password is "linux" and to view progress on the dump, you should specify that the command should be opened in a new terminal window.

well it sounds like u have not much RAM attached to your VM then. 4 GB are recommended.
The dump error can be ignored as long as auth.py has worked before and everything gets dumped..

If you have an unlocked device you have luck and you could use dd commands in TWRP. I know that yours is unlocked so you could use dd on every partition available on your device.
Tbh the most important seems to be persistent, fsg, misc but until I know for sure I would just backup EVERY partition. It's only needed once in the phones life usually so it doesn't hurt..
I need to have my device repaired before I can test it further so this can take a while.. Until then the backup of every partition is the best choice.
if the device is locked and on LL then TWRP in FIsH plus the mentioned dd commands can be used as well. I would still recommend the download mode backup though..
if the device is locked and on MM or N (haven't tested N in download mode though) then USB plus download mode is the only choice.

Technically this method can provide that (as said I can't test N atm though so I don't know if this works in general for N but if LG hasn't changed anything.. )
but:
keep in mind that cross flashing partitions can result in a soft brick on locked devices!! I don't know how N behaves here tbh so it may just work or it may soft brick in the specific case of modem.
So it would be nice to have someone trying to use the auth command on a N bootloader stack. This will not harm anything but then we know for sure if this is usable for N or not

yes unlocked.. i downloaded FWUL but on step to place the command for python i had directiry not found and gave up use twrp for EFS.
for DD what are commands is this using ternimal? where can i find all the command to extract say boot ,system modem ect.?

Hey! My name is Jacob and I must tell you that there is one common problem with Moto Z Play - OTA after downgroading results in hardbrick :silly:
I have also bricked my device some days ago, since then I have gathered interesting info, probably all old and not so old blankflash files (these were used in the past to unbrick, but don't work now) and two tools, that allowed me to make proper rawprogram0, patch0 and gpt_main0.bin needed for making files, that will allow everyone to unbrick.
But this can be worth nothing without your help. Problem with unbricking, is that last OTA, updated chip security making unable to flash older chip firmware rendering all flashfiles useless. To make new one, I must get some files that are not present in the internet, but are present in ALL working phones. All I need is full mmcblk0 backup. If you want to help follow these easy-peasy instructions:
INFO: Procedure bellow excludes EFS, MODEMST1, MODEMST2, FSG, BACKUP partitions from backup. These are your phone specific partitions, that contain sensitive information like IMEI, serial numbers etc, but this guide shows how to avoid them while backing up so you don't have to worry about it
Prerequisites:
1. Your phone might be rooted (but doesn't have to be), definitelly should be working and not messed up too much.
2. You must have at least 32 GB micro sd card
3. Any ROM, even custom will be good, but if you have stock, you get +1 point
Steps:
1. If you have TWRP recovery, boot into it and go to step 2.
If you don't have, here is official one https://eu.dl.twrp.me/addison/ - rename it to "twrp.img" and boot to it with

fastboot boot twrp.img
2. Backup your /data partition and keep it in safe place
3. Format sdcard in ext4 (it is more robust and failsafe) or FAT32/exFAT (if you are on windows).[/URL]
4. Wipe /data on your phone and insert sdcard. Under "Mount" tab in TWRP, check box next to SD-CARD.
5. Open TWRP terminal emulator (It is in advamced tab), type "su" and run these command:
If you trust me that I won't do bad things with your IMEI:

dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=/[U][I]"Ext sd location here"[/I][/U]/Loader.img bs=4096
This just makes full-backup of your all partitions from Qualcomm chip.
OR
If you don't trust me:

dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p[B][COLOR="Red"]X[/COLOR][/B] of=/[B][COLOR="DeepSkyBlue"]Y[/COLOR][/B]/mmcblk0p[COLOR="Red"]X[/COLOR] bs=4096
Where X is number of partition from 1 to 54 BUT NOT: 27 (modemst1), 28 (modemst2), 29 (fsg)
and Y is location of your SD-CARD. This will only back up partitions without IMEI, and other phone-specific info.
6 Generated files will be HUGE (~27GB). Copy them to pc and upload to cloud. Maby https://mega.nz/ - probably only they have enough space for that file for free.

The only other way I know would be a USB C OTG adapter and a USB stick...

That part with backing up /data and wiping it is just for Your comfort - You probably don't want to include all you photos, videos contacts etc, in the backup, I am wrong?
EDIT: You are right, solution with splitting archive is clearly better, becouse of smaller size and auto merging archives

Would it help you to get /data too? It's my old phone, screen is quite damaged so there is nothing worth looking for on it. Plus it was completely wiped twice by flashing the firmware with flashfile and unlocking the bootloader again since flashing the firmware locked it.
Data partition is absolutely not needed, but thanks for asking!
zip compressing was totally worth it. It went from 29.1 GB to just 2.58 GB?

Thank you! Artim's backup is not working on my phone, and I suddenly realised that my exam ending my school are in less than month (!), so I didn't have time neither to write a thread, nor to reverse engineer the file, but I will try to find time and test your backup!
Ps. Don't worry about me beeing temporiarly inactive, this thread is my current target and I won't give up!

Bobernator, I'm just posting to let you know that I am very thankful for your efforts and to take as long as you need. I have a LATAM XT1635-02 that got bricked by an automatic update quite a few months ago. It's in fastboot state. If there is anything I can do to help, let me know.
I now own a XT1710-06, so if you think the files from it could be useful, let me know.
Welcome again! My exams have just ended (I hope they went well) I am temporally at my uncle's house so I don't have access to files and info I've gathered, but I will return to home at friday and even Easter will not stop me, becouse I have decided to start DevXDA project!

I think I you can easly fix your phone, since fastboot works. You will need factory update zip, it is pinned somewhere in this forum, but if you feel unsure (you can brick phone even harder with this method if it goes wrong), I can assist you during the weekend and share a link with correct zip.

Device which you have is Moto Z2 Play (albus) that have next version of the chip in Moto Z Play (addison). My plan is to fix addison by combining some of the firmware from it and albus, but these files are available freely and you don't need to send them.

Thanks for the reply! Sorry, i've been quite busy with exams as well.
It's been a while since the phone is bricked, and i think fastboot was the wrong word. When it is plugged in it appears as a qualcomm device and the LED blinks, but other than that the phone does absolutely nothing. I remember being unable to unbrick it because of needing a `programmer.pem` file specific to the version of android that was installed.
The phone had an unlocked bootloader, twrp and supersu. It got stuck during an OEM update from 7.1.1 (i think) to 8.0.0. It was stuck for over four hours, I turned it off by force and then it never turned on again .
With regards to the Moto Z2 files, that's fantastic to hear. If there's anything else I can do to help, please say so. I've configured email alerts now so i'll get notified when you reply .
