Hi i have an ext partition of 512 mb . I want to inatall an hd rom but it's requirement is 1gb ext . How can i rezize the ext partition to 1gb. I have try rom manager but it give you only 512mb. I have downloaded gparted but i'm getting error after creating the partition. It won't apply the changes. Any help
GParted should work just fine - used it to resize my ext3 partition from 512 mb to 1 gb.
Are you trying to resize the partition when the phone is still on? - i.e. ROM loaded, USB in disk mode? - That would explain why the partitions are locked in some sense.
Can you try the following and post back if it was successful:
Mount the SD card using a card reader (i.e. not through your phone) and then try GParted to resize the partitions
OR (if you dont have a separate sd card reader)
Boot into recovery (ROM not yet loaded into memory to lock sections of your sdcard), and then try GParted to resize the partitions
You could also try using this tool to partition the sd card: MiniTool Partition Wizard, or even use the Amon-Ra recovery - flash it with unrEVOked and use that to partition your sd card.
As suggested above, you can try using an Ubuntu live cd of GParted by either burning it to a cd or boot it from a usb stick: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download.
Or, you use it from within Ubuntu (vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVK-t...eature=related)
1) Connect your phone to your computer (or use an SD Card adapter...., in this case skip to 4)
2) Pull down the notification bar and mount the phone
3) Start Gparted
4) Gparted will search available drives. (Your phone should show up as a USB drive, and will be something like /dev/sdb1 or /dev/sdc1, etc..)
Warning: double-check you've not selected a hdd by mistake!
5) In the upper right corner, select the correct USB device for your phone. (i.e. check to make sure it is correct size for your SD card)
6) Right click on each partition and select 'unmount'
7) Right click on each partition and select 'delete'
If you know what you are doing, you can re-size the partitions and add a new 2nd partition formatted as ext2/3/4
8) Right click on the big gray bar (should say unallocated x.xx gb) and click 'new'
9) Enter configurations
Free Space preceding = 0
Create as = Primary
New size = [don't touch]
File system = fat32
Free Space Following = 512 (or whatever you want)
10) Click add
11) Right click on the big gray bar (should say unallocated x.xx gb) and click 'new'
12) Enter configurations
Free Space preceding = 0
Create as = Primary
New size = [don't touch]
File system = ext2/3/4 (recommend ext4)
Free Space Following = 0 (or ~32 if you want swap)
Click add
13) Click edit, then 'Apply All Operations' to write changes to disk
14) Quit GParted
15) Unmount your SD Card
16) Reboot your phone
I had installed a dual boot with windows phone 7 and android. the partitions look like this:
fat (media files) ________________ | ext4 (android os) | ________________windowsphone 7
using gparted, i successfully deleted wp7 partition. now i tried moving the ext4 to the end so i could increase the size of the fat. but it won't let me. so then i tried copying the ext4 and pasting it at the end of what used to be the windowsphone7 (now is unallocated). but it keeps dropping the connection to the sdcard while its copying the files in the old ext4 to the new ext4 in the card reader and saying: end of file while reading Resource temporarily unavailable. it gives me at that point the options ' retry, cancel, ignore'.
i can't figure out what is wrong. i want to be able to preserve the file systems so i don't have to setup android and all the apps and files again, because i've moved to linux mint and i'm new to linux. and i don't know if all the necessary utilities i used on windows will work successfully under wine or playonlinux. etc..

Question's in the title.....
Does it matter which order the different partition types are created in?
If so.... what is the difference.
I have read now a number of different threads related to creating these partitions (usually via gparted) but it is not clear to me if the order is important.
I have set up a card with ext first .... it seems to work, but the card is not readable directly when plugged into a PC - I can read/write when still in the phone via USB.
If the FAT32 partition is first - then could the PC read that directly ... but Android will still find the ext4 at the end?
I would like to find out before my new class 10 card arrives and I set it up.
Thanks

if you're using gparted (good choice):
FAT32 first (on the left), ext4 second (on the right), both primary.
First of all, as stated by eddiehk6, the first partition it's fat32, folowed by ext!
I did the partitioning thing over and over with 4ext recovery (look for the updater app at 4ext.net - i highly recommend this recovery ) and everything went smooth.
You only need to go to "Tools" when in recovery and use the sd card partitioning command, wich will guide you through the process and set your card; remember to backup your data before doing this, cause it's recommended to do things "from scratch"!
Wich rom do you want to use? For GB the best thing to do is setting only one ext partition, for ICS it's better to add the swap partition too!
GB: when prompted, select 1024 (the standard for almost all roms) for the first ext, 0 for second ext and swap and select ext4 as a fs when prompted; this will set your SD card like this: x MB fat32 / 1024 MB 1st ext4 / 0 MB 2nd / 0 SWAP
ICS: when prompted, select 1024 (the standard for almost all roms) for the first ext, 0 for second ext and 256 for swap (not a must) and select ext4 as a fs when prompted; this will set your SD card like this: x MB fat32 / 1024 MB 1st ext4 / 0 MB 2nd / 256 SWAP. ICS with HWA use more RAM than GB and this may lead to crash and slowness. I'm actually running BCM 3.0U1 without SWAP without problem (and i'm fairly impressed)!
Sorry for my english

There is no order that the computer reads your partitions. I once had a flashdrive split into 6 different partitions, one was windows xp, the other was ubuntu. and the rest were different file partitions
Hello!
While trying to install S2E i managed to partially ruin the functionality of my phone. I have an HTC Desire (GSM) running Cyanogenmod 7.1 stable release. I have S-off, root and ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0.
(I wanted to install a new SD card. In the process I managed to loose all my previous SD card data and I only have a 2 months old back-up from when I was running a different android version, so that will not be very helpful at recuperating many things, but even without the old SD card my phone was still operating correctly besides being unable to run the apps installed on the card. I presume this issue is unrelated to my current problem.)
Here is how I've think I've broken the phone:
- I used Gparted to format a new 8 GB microSD card (class 6) with 1 GB ext4 partition and a FAT32 partition.
- I installed S2E and checked all the options for the OS to use the external storage on the SD card partition.
- It turned out that my partition was not correctly identified by the OS (probably the issue was with using the built-in card reader of the laptop and not a stand alone USB card reader).
- I booted into Recovery Mode and re-formated the SD card with 1 GB of ext3, 32 GB of Swap and the rest as fat.
- After the restart the boot process took a very long time. When the OS finally booted I practically had a fresh install with none of my old settings available (shortcuts, wallpaper, apps etc.). Even the apps stored on the local memory disappeared (S2E, ROM manager, gmail, market etc.) and my home button no longer works. I am unable to receive phone calls since the phone automatically rejects incoming calls. I see incoming calls in the call log and I can make outgoing calls.
I presumed the issue is with mounting the sd-ext partition, but even if I tried to manually mount it after boot I see no change.
I followed these guides to install parted and use 32fsck to see if the partitions are corrupt. I think I have no problems.
Here are the code reports of running parted:
Code:
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
GNU Parted 1.8.8.1.179-aef3
Using /dev/block/mmcblk0

Here is my fstab as well:
Code:
/dev/block/mtdblock4 /cache yaffs2 rw
/dev/block/mtdblock5 /data yaffs2 rw
/dev/block/mtdblock3 /system yaffs2 rw
/dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /sdcard vfat rw
/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /sd-ext ext3 rw
I presume that a fresh OS install will fix the issues. However I hope I can recover the settings stored on the ROM if I fix the sd-ext partition issue.
I will appreciate any suggestions you might have.
ps: adb push and fstab pull is working only when phone is in Recovery. If the CM7.1 is booted there is no fstab in /etc.
Had a similar issue sometime ago. Sorry to say couldn't fix it. In fact I would say the amount of time you spend trying to fix that issue will outway a fresh install.
If you can do a full backup still and save it to your pc you could do a fresh install and work on the issue without loss of phone functionality. Just my thoughts...
Thanks for your advice!
I ended up going for a fresh install with CM7.1 and S2E.
Thinks are ok now the only problem I have is that I don't see the 1 GB of available space reported correctly. Something like 152 MB is free and a negative value is reported as the used space. The CM option of using expanded internal storage is dimmed but I am not sure if that should be different.

No problem. Glad you sorted the issue.
I know with a2sd using standard settings won't show the true size of the parition wont be reported. Something to do with the way it works. If it's working well and letting you install apps with no problems I wouldn't worry too much about
I have been trying all day to figure out how to partition my sdhc card to use for Link2sd and have not been able to find a solution. Can someone please help me with this issue?

Just why not use CWM or TWRP recovery to do this? That's convenient, professional and on-the-go

If anyone can help with ideas/tips...
I am having trouble trying to set up a correct/valid SD card partition again that I can use with the Link2SD app.
I am using the latest version of Link2SD (3.4.5), and running latest CM 11 Nightly (cm-11-20140430-NIGHTLY-epicmtd.zip)
I had this working before (a few weeks ago), using Minitool Partition Wizard to create a 1GB partition with ext2 file system.
Since then I did a wipe on the phone, and have been trying to get it set up again like I had it before.
However, now when I try setting up partition and Link2SD, it seems to work at first (it seems to recognize the partition and let me move apps there via 'Create link') - *BUT* if I ever reboot the phone, then the linked apps are not recognized - it's like they vanished! Even though I am not getting any errors about the partition, it is like it can't see it, or the links don't work or something.
I have tried several times 'Recreate Mount Scripts' and reboot, etc. but it has not helped so far.
I have tried this with ext2 (which I know did work for me in the past), ext3, and ext4, but each of those does not seem to work.
I did have luck with a FAT32 partition, but that does not let me take advantage of the latest Link2SD feature to 'Link internal data'...
I guess I am getting extremely frustrated because I know that at least etx2 *should* work, since I had it working before...
If anyone reading this is successfully using CM 11 and Link2SD, can you explain details of how you set up your partition to work (expecially if you have it able to work with something other than FAT32)
I have looked at all sorts of websites/tutorials (which are often slightly outdated, or written for other phones), but I was wondering if I could maybe get details from someone actually using this on their Epic 4G, so that I can compare notes exactly (I am afraid that maybe I am just missing one little detail to make this work correctly like it did before?!)
Thanks in advance to anyone who read this far and can offer any tips, or just explain details of how you created your partition.
Another thing I have noticed... when I create my 2nd 1GB partition of ext2, and try going through this process I described above... as I said it appears to work, up until I reboot, and then apps that were linked are gone... and then if I hook back up to the PC and run Minitool Partition Wizard again, then the 2nd partition now shows as "other" instead of "ext2".
connect your phone to computer and open minitool partition wizard. if you want to create a new partition, the function Create Partition can help you. You need to use Resize partition to get some space from one partition. There will occure an unallocated partition in minitool, then right click and choose Create Partition. You can type the partition label and choose the file system and drive letter. Hope it helps.

Your reply was a little late. Are you using internet explorer?
Hey guys
So i was trying to flash the new RR remix 7..
I formatted everything and now my TWRP shows 0 MB and i am unable to mount or flash ANYTHING except firmwares and recoveries.
I have NO clue what's going on
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
I was using 7.x the other day and tried to revert back to 6.x. Unfortunately, I couldn't because the data partition was set as f2fs. I tried changing it back to ext4 through twrp and it wouldn't work. It kept saying something about the data partition is busy or in use.
I fixed this by booting into fastboot and reformatting the data partition from there using the command: fastboot format:ext4 data (or maybe it was userdata?) I forgot lol.
Also, which partition did you reformat? I think it's only cache and data that is to be changed to f2fs for that ROM.
