Hello all, back in June 2015, I lost my drone and htc m8 in a canyon. It's rained 7-10 days these entire past months. Earlier today, someone had posted to the community forum saying that they had found them. The post also reads "the phone is drenched." Provided it's not destroyed, what should I do with the phone when I get it tomorrow afternoon? Should I stick it in rice? Do we know if there are any chances of it still working after being out this long? Thanks!
I would go the rice method. Hopefully the battery is completely dead. I would not try to power on. You might get lucky

Rice method did not work for me and I left the phone in a drawer for a year then found a "Tear Down" for my phone. Looks frightening attacking the phone with a "Stanley" knife but it worked for me. See if you can find a tear down for your phone, what have you got to loose??

Hi! I'm new to this forum so I hope there will be some understanding for the urgency.
Here's the deal; I dropped my HTC Desire in the toilet, clumsy me. I managed to grab it within a few seconds and so I removed all parts and let them dry over a towel. Stupidly enough, I tried to reboot the phone after some time, not thinking that electricity and water does not mix too well. I dried the cell phone with a vacuum cleaner for about 5 minutes and placed it in a bowl of rice. Just recently, I tried to start the phone with the charger plugged in but it won't work this time either. The phone keeps vibrating and vibrating until I remove the battery - what should I do?
Any help is appreciated!

the fact its vibrating must be a good sign, atleast it means you didnt fry the whole thing when u tried to switch it on wet, the best i can recomend is put it back in a air tight container filled with rice, make sure the desire is totaly submerged in the rice and leave it for 24 hrs+ , if it wont switch on after that, then its a repair job

Have to agree; at least it's giving some sort of sign! Problem is that it won't stop vibrating and the screen remains black - no lights, etc. I suppose I'll have to give it a try and see what follows. My parents wouldn't be too happy with me explaining the circumstances... Lesson learned.
Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the reply! Are you quite sure if it's worth the risk, though?

F*ck. I placed the cell phone in a box of rice and let it stay for about 20 hours, but it won't start at all now after a few attempts. No vibration at all. I'm starting to think that I'm screwed.
YES!!!
It booted up now! The power button doesn't appear to work properly, but it will start!

well thats a start, give it a few more days in a bowl of rice and if that wont help (to make sure everything work!) hopefully it will! but yu know.. if you have no insurance and have no choice, get a compressed air spray and have fun

The power button isn't working now either. Will check if the warranty covers this, I'm just hoping that there will be no indications of water damage.

There are usually little white stickers inside the phone which turn red if they get wet, so my guess is you've got little hope trying to get a warranty repair.

Dave

Well, there is a sticker near the battery slot on the phone and another one on the battery itself. Both of them are white, luckily enough. We'll see what the guy says, thanks for the help though!
Hello!
Got any luck with a service with power button?
I have the same issue. Phone fell into water.. after few days phone works fine, except power button.
HTC Service refuses to make a guarantee repairment (suprisingly - liquid damage).
I think, in my case power button is short-circuited: when inserting the battery, phone is turning on and starting up w/o any problems (normally, Desire doesn't do that, I've tested friend's phone).
Unfortunately, get the root and remap sleep button to optical trackball isn't an option for me...
Someone advised me to disassemble the phone, and try to clean the power button with an alcohol. But I didn't tried this yet...

I'm a bit late, I suppose.
We sent the phone for a repair job but it was "quickly" sent back to me. Good of them to say this a month later, when I was eagerly waiting for them to send it back, whole and functional. Anyhow, I got it back and fortunately; it worked. There were no issues, what-so-ever, with the goddamn power button.
But, ironically enough, I managed to trip into a lake yesterday. What goes around comes around. At least I wasn't browsing for some porn this time. Jokes aside, the power button doesn't seem to be working anymore. Sometimes it'll respond when I boot the phone up, but now it doesn't seem to do this anymore.
Disconnect motor
Disassemble the phone and disconnect contact on vibration motor? Or remove motor and reassemble phone. Worth a try to get a functioning phone minus vibration option. :fingers-crossed:
Hey can know how much the company charge for d repair ????
Okay, so I dropped my phone in a puddle. Did the whole rice thing and whatnot to no avail. The phone isn't COMPLETELY fried, but unusable. It turns on, but only for about 60 seconds at a time before it reboots. The power button is spazzing out and constantly presses so the screen goes off and on. I can use the phone for a minute if i hold the power button and then press the back button when the long press menu comes up.
Enough of that, time for solutions.
I'm not eligible for an upgrade until August in which I was hoping for the GS3 to be released on Sprint by then. I was hoping to maybe buy a bad ESN Galaxy Nexus or even just another Epic off EBay/Craigslist. Would I be able to use my Epic's clean ESN for the Nexus? I'm on a really tight budget so full price is completely out of the question. Any and all help is greatly appreciated guys!
Is it rooted? Better odin back to fc09 if it is and bring it to sprint to see if they'll replace it. I had the same issue with the buttons going crazy and not working and they gave me a new one.

ESNs are tied to each phone, and cannot legally be swapped AFAIK
Could try taking apart and seeing if a cleaning will help, if you are going to write the phone off anyways.
Do you have TEP? Can try to ODIN the latest OTA, and if it fails see if a shop will replace it, but they may find a water detector tripped
IMO, best best is an Epic off Ebay or Craig's list with a clean ESN
Alcohol!!!!! Watch the vid, it'll help out.

elite developer adam (sorry forgot the last name or so), talks about how alcohol will absorb the moistur or water rather quickly, but if the board got wet, you have a max of 15 seconds before the board becomes warped. meaning, the phone will be totally non-functional. as far as the esn is concerned, sorry, thats a no go.

this thread might help with taken it apart to clean out

If this was true, then the rice fix would never work, would it?
I have seen several people say they got their phone wet, and use the few days in rice trick to get it back, wouldn't that mean the board was wet for longer than 15 seconds?

Really all depends on how long it was in the water and how long it took you to get it into the rice... if you can get it out of the water in 10 secs or less you probably have a little time to get it into the rice... not like the water is just gonna pour in it as soon as it hits the water... if you get it straight out you most likely won't have very much water inside it and be able to still dry it out...
My phone went for a swim with me last summer let it set for about 3 days then turned it on and everything worked just fine so let it set somewhere where its hot so it dries your phone and yeah I was one of those idiots that tried turning my phone on several times during that day I didn't stick in rice or any thing like just let it naturally dry out

Hi, my apologies if my HTC is in the wrong forum, not sure where the Desire would fit, if anywhere.
Nonetheless this is a useful phone to me and worked fine till the day I had to jump in a lake to save my 5 year old boy from drowning. Naturally didn't have the time to remove the phone from my pocket before jumping in the lake. Kid was fine after swallowing some water but phone "swallowed" a lot of water. Let it dry in a bag of rice and baking soda for several days to fully dry. But when trying to turn it on, the screen just flickers non stop. However when connecting it to the computer using a USB cable, I get what appears to be a boot screen (see pic in address below). Phone was rooted and run CyanogenMod 7. Maybe someone that's familiar with the procedure could guide me? Tried a couple of the options shown but to no avail. Old but still decent phone, would like to get it working again. I've transferred the sim to another phone and I've saved the micro SD card. Just need to get the phone to boot again. PS: could the battery be toast? Maybe it got shorted when I first tried to turn the phone on while still wet?
Any help is appreciated.
I'm too new here, won't allow me to post external links. Please go to h-t-t-p://tinyurl.com/p4dmgej (remove dash from http)
I'd say leave it to dry naturally for a week or so and try again. If no joy then you could try a new screen but it's probably something really tiny and sensitive that cannot be replaced..
Glad you saved your boy!.

It's been 2 months. But I did make a crucial mistake: I tried to turn the phone on while still at the lake. This likely caused more damage than it needed.
However I suspect the issue is with the battery. It won't charge past 3.85 volts. And the display works just fine, once I press the key combo to enter the boot screen as seen in the pic above. Will try and track one down locally, hopefully a shop will be able to test it a battery in the phone before I buy it.
And yes, the boy was fine. But it was a close call. it is amazing how quickly something can go wrong. I neglected the lake rule of staying within arm's reach. Let this be a lesson to anyone with small ones: it only takes seconds for things to go badly wrong, even at a supposedly safe, man made lake intended for kids.
PS: 2 months prior an adult died on the same lake after falling off his boat. Another lesson: invest in swimming lessons. Scary stuff, indeed.
Right, i thought you were seeing that over usb via sdk or something.. You could always try opening it and inspecting for blown components. What damage can be done.. It's already useless.
I still think it's worth leaving it to dry naturally.

Hi long story short: Phone slip from my jacket into a ice cold water cooler and spend there at least 2 minutes.
I was able to disassemble and dry it up, did a trick with usb charging and replugging the battery at the same time of powering it up and I got it working again.
The display is soaked in water still no matter how much I try to dry it using a hair dryer. So I order a new one. + a new battery just in case this ones goes bad eventually.
Now my problem is that the usb is not being recognized while plugged on a computer.
Beside this I don't know what other hidden issues it might have.
How screw am I ?
How much mileage can I get out of this phone now?
Do you have any kind of corrosion on metal contact and/or phone motherboard? If so, the only way to fix corrosion is to clean it in ultrasound bath with chemicals.
you're not suppose to turn it on until it fully dried, too late for that
you should have left it in some rice for a few days
do it now and it might still be recoverable since it seems to still work, but don't get your hopes up

it was still on when I took it off the cooler, I couldn't turn it off without using the power button and this is not a galaxy that I could remove the battery right away. I wasn't at my place and didn't have any tools with me.
The phone is working now, but I don't know for how long. thanks for your advice thou.
then it's probably fine then, it can't get worse at least

Yes it can, sometimes water damage shows itself after a few hours or days (corrossion). Hope OP is lucky and there is no permanant damage :fingers-crossed:

Put the turned off phone covered in a bowl with uncooked rice asap and let it in for a day or two to extract as much moisture as possible :good:
Well it seems it is done.
First the volume button went out, then the power button. I tried and clean it again with alcohol to no avail. Send it to a repair shop to see if they can fix it since the phone is still working but can't turn it off without the buttons.
Thanks everyone that chime in. really appreciate it!
For a while ago I bought an defect Nexus 5X on Ebay to use as spare parts, I needed a camera.
Just for fun I have tried to get the phone working. It has had some life signals but since some time been totally dead. No lamp while trying to charge and no start.
Today I thought why not? I bake the motherboard in the oven, did so. After 200 degrees Celsius, maybe a little more, 10 minutes in the oven and time for cooling down I manage to get the phone start. Now it's running LOS without problem.
Maybe it's not working tomorrow after being cooled down totally , we will see.

Still working today, being switched off during night it starts and boots as normal today.
One thing I didn't mention is that before I baked the motherboard in the oven I did take away the two metal shields/covers on the board, one on each side. Just to snap them off and it worked to just put them back again after baking.
Today after a while the phone freeze and switch it self of, so this did not work, no harm done but worth a try
