So, a Huge thanks to all those who worked on the method to get 2.2 rooted. I followed the directions and I am here, rooted. I used the Amon_Ra for my recovery back to 2.2. Now, this might be a stupid question, but What now? My phone looks the same, and I still can't remove sprint stuff. What are the next steps, I know i can install a custom "higher speed ROM", but can i just work from where i am now? I have the Superuser icon, but when i open it, i get "no apps in list" ? what do i need to install to start taking advantage of all that rooting has to offer?
Thanks for your replies!!

Choose a new fancy ROM, download it to your SD card and use Amon to flash it. Easy as pie.
They are many great ROMs from many great developers here. Everyone has their preferences, mine is Fresh. I've never been dissapointed.
Agreed.....I can tell a big difference in speed and battery life but now what? I also can't delete any of the Sprint bloatware and I am on Baked Sense 1.6.
I don't understand: Why would you root your phone if you don't even know what it does? Not trying to be a ****; I'm just saying.
Firstly, if you rooted, all you did was revert your phone back to 2.1 so you no longer have Froyo. (edit: nevermind.....I see you want back to 2.2; I'm guessing you flashed a 2.2 stock rooted rom to your phone). The superuser app is empty because it hasn't given superuser permission to any apps that require it. If you want to see your superuser app in action, download ShootMe or screenshot from the market, and you will see the app asks for superuser permission.
I rooted my phone because I thought it was ridiculous to pay Sprint $30 a month to use the wireless tether option that was built into the Evo by HTC and which I already paid for when I purchased the phone. Now I use my root privileges to do a lot more, but my point is that I had a reason to root my phone to begin with. Download wireless tether and try it.
If you want to uninstall apps, download Titanium Back up (that's what I use anyway) and go to town removing stuff. I am not sure if the free version removes apps or not because I got the paid one from the beginning, but now that you are rooted, it is well worth the price for the premium license. You can use this app to move stuff to your SD card and free up your phone's internal memory, too. You can also back up all your apps and system data which is handy when you flash from one rom to another and you have to do a full wipe of your phone.

Some of the ROMs have all that stuff removed for you, such as Fresh.
First thing to do: Head over to the developer forum and flash Netarchy's kernel, which will uncap your FPS. Do it ASAP, DO IT NAO!!!!1!!1!1!eleven. Then come back here and tell us how amazing it is.
thanks for the input
Thanks for all the replies! Rugedraw - i especially appreciate your indepth answer despite the fact that you are clearly somewhat annoyed by the question.
Here's the thing. The android revolution is ongoing and picking up steam. and i could talk about that all day long. Opensource, kick blackberry in the berry, and send apple back to where it was after its huge popularity boom in the 90s - struggling to overcome its fatal closed system flaw. Beyond that, I bought my Evo for 2 reasons. My 16 month son threw my blackberry into the toilet (nice work - i now appreciate it), and my tech guy at work has been raving about his rooted Droid x2. as of 10 days ago it didn't seem possible to root the 2.2 froyo, but he told be to be on the lookout. I figured this is a little like an arms race and that the sooner i rooted my phone when the method was avail. the better. (tech guy is in italy with his fiancee right now, or i would be asking him all these questions)
Soooo, it seemed to me, that in the spirit of owning an opensource device and joining the android revolution, that i should root my phone and unlock all the magic.
I'm no computer programming whiz, i dont write code, and i learned all of the terminology on this board in the last 2 days. So lost, but learning fast.
I did not root my phone for no reason. I clearly understand the utility of having superuser status (besides, most guys are wired to want that kinda thing regardless) - deleting annoying sprint apps that chew power, "re-tuning" the device to run more efficiently, and of course, free wifi tethering.
But, after completing the most excellent root method described in this forum, i found myself staring at a rooted 2.2 and wondering what the next step was. There are NO google results for "i've rooted my evo 4, now what?" so thats why i started this thread, figuring that I was not the only one in my situation
THAT enormously long winded explanation complete, I would love to aggregate the appropriate options in this thread. Method to wipe, list of Flash Roms for a rooted 2.2 EVO.
Again, thanks for all the replies,
btw what does "uncap your FPS" mean?
If you did unrevoked then I would flash the latest Amon-RA recovery image. No offense to clockworkmod, amon is just my preference.
Poke around the recovery console and learn how it works.
NAND FIRST!! haha, develop that habit before you flash anything (roms, kernels, etc.), just in case
-Flash a rom that suits your needs. Read their OP's and threads to learn what they are about and what the people that use them think. I would suggest you just flash the stock rooted 2.2, play with it for a week or two to see how root works and explore what you can do with it. Also look into backup methods so you are familiar with how to preserve your stuff when you flash a different rom.
FPS = frames per second. There are kernels that will lift the 30fps cap.
Read about kernels and how to take advantage of them.
I know I've been pretty general, just pick a trail and start walking, when you have questions ask em
I like your logic of titling the thread exactly what you searched for, usin yer brains to make this thread more beneficial to the next guy (imagine a thumbs-up smiley here)

It is highly recommended that you do what he says! You'll see a major improvement in lots of areas. In case you're curious here is my setup: STOCK 2.2 w/ Netarchy kernal. I chose the stock 2.2 so that I may do with it what I like. It's very fast and very stable.

You can remove Sprint stuff, just have to spend some time and learn to use ADB. Rooting an EVO is not the same as rooting an iPhone, you can pretty much do everything you can from rooting an iPhone without even rooting Android so the difference is not that great.
Most of what you gain from rooting Android is being able to do things the carrier doesn't wan't you to do such as install free wifi tethering, remove their apps etc... You can also install others roms where they have already done this stuff for you but from what I have seen on the EVO and 2.2 battery life suffers greatly on pretty much any rom other than stock rooted so there is a lot to be gained from learning adb and just working with the stock rooted rom to remove the apps you wan't to.
I'm in the same boat. I got my new EVO on Tuesday, it was rooted an hour later. Why? Because that's how we do things! First thing for me it was important to have tethering. Work blocks damned near everything. As I learn more about the Android system I'll get more use out of root.
I was carefully paying attention to the thread and particularly bluehaze's answer. I'd like to learn more about using adb to remove sprint crap. That amazon app is always restarting itself. If there an ADB for newbs guide around here anywhere? I looked but didn't see.
There are a few things that I use which make root a necessity.
- custom ROMs provide a setup more tailored to what you are personally looking for
- using wireless tethering without being artificially limited to Sprint's commercial offering
- backups! I can boot into recovery and make a backup image of my setup at any point. That way no matter what settings I change or what ROMs I test out, I can always go right back to my stable daily driver in 5 minutes if needed.
- custom recovery and superuser allow you to install things, uninstall things, theme things, etc. Nothing worse than not being able to change something on my own device
- speed, battery, etc. via tweaked kernels. I'm using Baked Snack's ROM and kernel now and it's way faster and nicer on battery than stock
nOObs need love too

Now there is...thanks. My Google search on those words led me here. I've been lurking on these boards since I got my EVO a while ago, but I haven't had the guts to root until right now, 2nite, it's happening... I'll be back soon with my *new and improved* phone.
Whoo! Good Luck!

New guy...
Same here, I just rooted my Evo today and everything seems to be working great. But I'm clueless on how to put a rom on to my sd card so I can flash it to my evo.
Can any one send me a link to a basic how to..
Thanks

OK I'm really sorry but I've been searching for days (weeks actually) so forgive me if there is a thread that I can't find - and/or link to it for me if you wouldn't mind. (I get frustrated by people asking the same question over and over, as I'm sure you do too, I really am stuck as I am completely new to android and am still a little stuck in iOS mindset - i.e. can't seem to work thing out for myself lol)
This relates specifically to the SGNII hence it's post here and not in general android forum (where I've also searched)
I'm loosing patience waiting for a 32GB so I'm "considering" getting a 16 and 64GB card and rooting. I know I will have more than 16GB of apps (added up all the once I want/need) and really need a backup facility so......
When you root the SGNII - only to gain root access for modifying the external SD to take apps and, possibly, to use titanium backup:
1) Do you loose any stock functions/apps other than warranty, OTA updates, and automatic app updates?
2) Do ALL apps run ok from the external SD (eg top of the line games, Polaris office etc) - is there any slow down?
3) If, at a later point, I flash a later stock ROM (what would normally be an OTA update) release will it still find all the apps and their data on the SD card?
4) If an app is updated in the store is it easy to update it onto the SD when you know the update is available
I'm sorry if I'm asking the same question that others have asked but I've been searching for days. Many thanks for links or direct answers to these questions. I'd really love a 32GB or above and I'm giving it until the upcoming US release to see if this is a trigger for global release but there are already some pretty tasty deals in the 16GB format on contract here in the UK
Many thanks in advance for your help

Thank you so much for the reply, sorry if it was a simple question, pushing me more toward the 16gb now (I'd be saving a lot of money on my contract if I upgrade!). - I actually went into the store today to buy one, fate must have stopped me because they only had white in stock (I want grey) lol.
So if I root and use triangle away to reset counter I can still get OTA updates? - that's cool (I'm sure ill be flashing new roms before long anyway - used to love messing with the OS on my XDA exec back in the day - so this isn't too important, but nice to know)
Thank you for confirming apps will have no significant problems running form the SD (I know that things like widget apps need to be in the on-board memory)
I think I've understood correctly from reading around that SD mounted apps will not "automatically" update, again that doesn't bother me - I'm sure there are apps out there that can "watch" for new releases - time to do another search.
I'm not to scared about getting back from root should I have a problem now (I.e. factory reset) - thank you
One more question, if you don't mind:
I've been reading about directory bind quiet a lot over the past few weeks (trying to answer the above questions you answered in 2mins!) - is there a good app that you would recommend for directory binding? There's several on the store and, TBH, the reviews don't really help me make a decision. I did catch somewhere that there was a method to trick the phone into thinking the external SD was the Internal SD and vice versa - what's your views on that?
I think it's funny that rooting invalidates your warranty when even the samsung App Store has program's that require root!
Once again, thanks for the reply
I'm going to take this question in a different direction from deke997's thread so that I can perhaps draw a different set of replies.
My current situation: I'm rooted and use a customized Android ROM. As many of you are aware, that means Android Pay doesn't work for me. And since Google will appear (under threat of the credit card companies) to only get tighter on this as time passes, we may need to find ways to deal with this. I'm tempted to try out a different, even a stock, ROM if this means AP will work, but I want to find ways to push back without being too aggressive. So here are some questions:
1. Apart from a straight stock TouchWiz ROM, are there other less-customized ROMs out there that seem to pass Google's acid test?
2. I know custom system ROMs are out, but what about custom recoveries? I may be willing to forgo things like Titanium Backup if I can at least maintain Nandroids, which something like TWRP will let me do.
3. How meticulous is the system used to check the integrity of the system? I ask this because one reason I like to keep root is for AdAway, but I may be able to work around this using a symlink from /etc/hosts to someplace user-editable. Would it detect this kind of alteration?

No, yes, yes.
So, to clarify:
1. No other ROM will work, not even a Google Play Edition ROM?
2. Yes, I can use a custom recovery safely as long as /system is left alone?
3. Yes, it can detect an edit to /etc and will flag it as unclean?

Yep; regarding the recovery however, a custom recovery will make Android Pay not work.
I wonder why a GPE ROM won't work given it's an official Google ROM and therefore would be about as vetted as you can get. What prevents a GPE ROM working?
Hi All,
I was reading the news and came accross a recent article stating that there is way of having root access to old android devices that are preety much out of luck for futre security updates. I thought a developer can take a look and see if note 4 at&t can have root.
Article: http://arstechnica.com/security/201...tflips-to-root-android-phones-is-now-a-thing/
How I wish we could get one..possibly a glimmer of hope for us..
Tried the app, says closest thing to my phone is an S5 Plus..
I got the same thing. What does your actual output say? We should cut and paste our logs.
I assume it says S5 Plus due to the fact that both phones have a SD 805. Hopefully this actually leads to root. Another bug called Dirty Cow was also found. Maybe that will lead to root too. Hopefully.
I'm not a Dev, and this might even be an irrelevant post as it's coming from a different device, but it looks like they've managed to install TWRP on their device - previously not possible, using the Dirty Cow exploit..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69312919&postcount=148
Maybe we can have something like that?
I dunno... I'm still of the mind that N4 will NEVER be root-possible because of the device's utilization with government contracts. I have given up on rooting this thing, and with N7 having been recalled, I'm awaiting N8, and hoping it doesn't start blowing up!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Premium HD app
can anyone help me with something?
I've been keeping up on the progress they have been making with dirty cow. As of right now they can get the exploit to run and create a root shell, but after doing so they are losing read/write access and are being left with a read-only access. It's looking they they are probing into finding the right process the disrupt to keep the rw access so they can change selinux.
If they can manage to pull it off, which given how much progress they have made since it was announced, we will get root, but we will not be able to flash custom roms due to the locked bootloader. We will be probably be able to clean the bloat out and other system tweaks. The only downside so far is if you upgrade to 6.0+ this will most likely not work due to the enforced boot security check.
Hope they do find a way to get root using Dirty Cow..but then, I don't think I'd be willing to trade off MM to root at this point, since we cant flash custom ROMs anyways..
But if they can get it to work on MM, I'd be willing to try it out..
When going to Android 11 I'd like to keep my device unrooted.
The only things I want to keep is vanced (will install the version w/I magisk) and my Hotspot. I know there's some play store Hotspot apks but I can never get them to work.
Last update the build.prop edit no longer worked, but i found a zip that enabled it from XDA. Believe it needed to be flashed in magisk but not sure.
I intend to try and flash the 11 OTA and just remove -w, hoping I'll keep the Hotspot modification.
If it matters, my SO wanted me to get back into pokemon go and I can't play on a rooted device. Tried magisk hide but that didn't work.
Any advice would be appreciated, cheers.

You won't be able to keep any Magisk modifications without magisk. The way Magisk works is systemless so it needs to have the Magisk installed to mount the modules over the necessary directories. Also, for Pixels on Android Q and Android R you can't mount the system partitions to even modify them in the first place, so even if Magisk did directly modify the partitions they wouldn't work for devices with our logical partitions.
Pretty sure the way PoGo detects root is by searching for files/folders in your install storage called Magisk, twrp, or various other root names. So I'd suggest making sure those kinds of folders are cleaned out or renamed to something unrelated to root.
Also, Magisk doesn't support R yet so you won't be able to root yet even if you wanted to.

Ah. So maybe I should keep the -w in the OTA to make sure to clean out some folder/files.
Didnt know R wasn't supported yet, kinda figured it wouldn't be since it just came out, but thanks for saving the hassle of finding out the hard way.
I've read going through threads here and saw that some people had lost root but kept some modifications after updating. Hoped that would have worked or there'd be able way without root out there that I was unaware of.
Anyway, thanks for the response!

Well I just installed PoGo real quick after checking my internal storage and renaming any file/folder with Magisk in the name to remove Magisk, and with Magisk hidden with a random package name and app name and PoGo hidden in magisk hide I was able to successfully log in without it detecting anything. So if you do wish to have modifications once Magisk supports R just make sure to keep an eye on your files/folder names and you should be all good :good:
As for the threads you've been reading, that's definitely curious. Do you know if they were pixel users? Or just people using a GSI or something?

OTA will not wipe your phone. I updated this way last night from Q, not rooted.
Just realize that the Android 11 developer release is not designed to be run as a "daily driver". It's a first alpha release and it is going to be full of bugs and incompatibilities.
There is zero reason to install this on anything but a spare phone that you develop on.

My comment was directed mainly at the OP. Somehow I don't think he is Google's target audience for the developer build and I am afraid he will be the type that complains or begs for help when things don't work right.
That being said, I am also surprised that the release is running so well......

No disrespect. Just commenting on my experience.
I am also surprised. Only weird thing was asking to register my sim. I'm guessing it was looking for an esim. Other than that, not a single force close or slow down. But to be honest it doesn't look like a big update as the version number suggest. Feels more like a little spit and polish. Like this should be Android Q 10.1.
I myself gave up rooting. The only two reasons I was rooting were adaway and viper.

As with most major android updates since Oreo. Most visible changes now are slight UI revisions and some new features.
However, there are a load of under the hood changes being made. Some for the better, some for the worse.

Not to thread hijack, (which is what i am going to do anyway, but being POLITE about it ?), can anyone point me to a Hotspot solution for Sprint, without root? All the other various methods/tricks i used in the past that worked, like manually editing the LTE APN etc, just aren't working on this 3aXL.
