'Restoring Apps' after factory reset - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I usually disable options to back up but on a recent reset I left all options as default. Every time I reset now it says restoring apps, just before the phone boots to the homescreen. Is there anyway to remove this?

I dont think so. It is just restoring some google apps like Docs, Sheets, Slides and a few others.

More details? Rooted, or installed any custom mods or etc? Try factory reset, if else not working then you will have to flash your firmware again.

Thanks for the response. I'm a novice - how do I find out if the phone is Rooted? How do I do a factory reset? Or, where can I find information on these issues?

Alright, if like that means you haven't play anything on your phone yet, To resolve that, go to Settings > Backup and reset > factory reset your device.
Warning all apps will be lose your apps and all will be reset to default. (*just like you have newly bought your phone)
You can backup your SMS messages using SMS Backup & Restore app. Search for it in Playstore, If you want to backup your contacts, just export your contacts to SD card.

Is there anything that I could try first that isn't so catastrophic that it wipes out everything on the phone ? . . .

Or, you can try remove all your account and add them again then disable the Sync, See if it helps, if not, try reset your phone. If you are very unlucky even after reset the problem still presist, you should sent to Samsung Service Centre, maybe is hardware related issue.

Are you rooted?
If not, backup your data and do a factory reset.
No i am not rooted. This is my first android phone and i have a lot of apps and contacts on my phone. How can i save them before resetting the device ?
Thanks
In case you're actually in need of a factory reset you can sync your contacts & apps to your Google account. Probably they are already there. You can also check the LG backup & reset in Settings.

You can use SuperBackup App from the market. Here is the link --> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.idea.backup.smscontacts&hl=en
With this u can backup Contact,SMS, Apps (w/o data).
As the multitasking button is a softkey, so i believe its a software based issue and 90% chances are that Factory reset should solve your problem.
Try this and revert back.
Thank you very much this has worked !
Hello again guys,
So i've done factory reset .and all and as i mentioned before everything returned to normal...for a week! And this problem occured once again and i really don't want to do any reset again.
Thanks

[Q] Home button not working on 5.0.2

On a 2013 LTE Nexus 7 with the latest 5.0.2 installed, my home button doesn't work. The back and recent apps buttons work fine, but the home button doesn't do anything. Like the rest of the buttons, it responds to touch with an animation, but it doesn't take me home, ever, and it also doesn't launch Google Search on hold. I've read in other posts that there should be a "Home" menu option in Settings under the Device section, but I don't have that either. Another oddity, quick settings pulldown from the status bar isn't working. I can pull down the notification tray, but cannot pull down the quick settings above it.
Doing some tinkering of my own, I can tell you the following:
Wiping the data partition resolves the problem, but I'm trying to keep my user accounts, home screens, apps intact, hence my continued search for solution
Using a different launcher (Google Now Launcher via Play Store), the home button works fine but I'd rather use the default system Launcher
Reflashing the factory system image doesn't resolve the problem
There are no force close error messages
Clearing data/cache for the Launcher app doesn't resolve the problem
Clearing all cached data (through the storage menu option within settings, for each user) also doesn't resolve the problem
I have been tinkering (root, multirom, etc) but right now I'm on a fresh, unrooted factory system image, but with my "dirty" data partition (I'm trying to keep my user accounts, home screens, apps intact)
Any ideas of what might be upsetting the Launcher app? Next steps?
Same here.
I haven't tried your entire list, but I've done a few of them. Oddly, when i hit "recent apps", i can then hit "home" and it works. But that's the only time. And my notifications seem to be dead, as well as quick settings...
Background: I'm all stock. I got a system update notice for 5.1.1, which i was pretty sure i already had. So while checking my current OS version, I ended up verifying that i was up to date already. Shortly thereafter, the home button stopped responding and the tablet froze up. I can't remember if it rebooted by itself or if i had to long press the home button to get it to turn off. But when it came back on, it's like everything went factory reset (all the homescreens returned to factory), but all my apps are still there in the app drawer, but they all act as if i just installed them. I have to go into them and re-login to all of them and change all their settings to how i like them. And the homescreens will need to be redone. And the "home" button and notifications still don't work. Tried Nova, but that doesn't fix any of the issues for me. I may try the Google Now Launcher next.
It looks like ahoyboyhoy has tried flashing factory image and it doesn't help, so i'm not going to factory reset if I'll be stuck in the same situation in the end.
To follow up on *my* experience with this problem, I ended up having to format the data partition, so basically a full factory reset. After that, everything was back to normal and I restored apps from a backup.
Backup question

Thanks for the update! Were you stock? If so, what was the best way you found to do a backup/restore of apps? Did it handle app data? I tried using Helium a few years ago on an HTC device, but I ran into problems that couldn't be overcome. Does Android's built-in backup option work well? I never have had good app data recovery with the buil-in option...

I was stock rooted and I think I used My Backup Pro. Not sure if you need a paid version or root access to backup app data, but I was able to back up apks+data and although it wasn't as seamless as a TWRP backup, it was better than doing things manually.

Text Recovery after Factory Reset

Are there any recovery methods to get text back after a factory reset that were not backed up to the cloud?
Yesterday the 7.2 update to Swipe for Facebook bricked my device. It was completely unrecoverable. Could not even boot into safe mode to uninstall the app. As soon as my phone would unlock, the screen would go black, then crash to recovery giving a corrupt data message. I had to factory reset. For some reason even though my phone was setup over 48 hours before this happened, the backup function did not back up my texts. I've lost over a years worth of data, some vital to my work. Any help is appreciated.

I use SMS backup and restore from the play store. It is free to. The google cloud backup is Hit or Miss sometimes it'll back I'm up sometimes it won't. SMS app restores all your pictures and everything else that were in the text. And it saves everything to the cloud if so you choose. I think the only thing you could do that might work is do another factory reset and pick a different cloud backup.

You can try logging into your Carriers website and see if you have some sort of web texting enabled... Or give your carrier a call as well.
I know for a fact AT&T and Verizon have this option (but may not be enabled by default), not sure of others. Other than that, If you didn't have an app backing them up, you may be out of luck :/
Good luck!

Help needed asap. Google framework crashing

So this morning when I woke up, and checked my email, I got a notification for "google services framework not working" however the phone seemed to be normal. I rebooted it, unlocked it, and pretty much the phone is nonoperational. I keep getting notifications, that can not be cleared for " framework failing", "launcher failing", etc. Which makes it nearly impossible to navigate anywhere because they are in rapid succession.
Phone is a Pixel 2xl on the stock rom, never been rooted, etc. I am not sure what to even do at this point.
Any help would be much appreciated as this is my only device.

About the only thing you can do is a factory reset to see if it remedies the situation. Or, side load the OTA through stock recovery. The first will wipe your data, the 2nd won't. So backup what you can in either case before you start.

Thanks. What is the best means of backing it up at this point? How do I side load the OTA? I have not really messed with this phone at all so I am pretty ignorant when it comes to these things

You can find how to side load OTA's here....https://developers.google.com/android/ota
Google backup/restore will get you close to being back to normal. However, you will lose some app data. So whatever personal data you have, it's best to back it up on your pc.

What would be the most efficient way to back up photos? Really that is the only thing I would like to backup.
Google Photos. It automatically backs up images found in the Camera or DCIM folder on your internal storage space.

I can't use the phone though. I need to be able to do it from a PC or elswhere.
I got abd connected but I can't authorize the phone because the authorization pop up is behind the notification for failed google services. is there anyway around this?

Can you even get to your phone settings? If so, you may trying clearing app cache and data for Google play service and Google services framework like you see in the pic. Then if successful, reboot your device and see what happens.
I finally got the sideload to work, and it is still doing the same thing Only factory reset is left.

Yea, I can finagle my way there, but it doesn't do anything when I clear it.
I think my only hope at this point is to try and get my pics off it and factory reset.
How do I factory reset through adb? I navigated to the factory reset menu on the phone but the reset button is greyed out. I tried to do adb shell recovery --wipe_data and that didn't work.
Any advice how to reset through adb?

Either do it through the settings menu on your phone, or go into stock recovery using the power and volume buttons. Hold power + volume down for about 10 seconds, then when the bootloader screen comes up, use the volume down button to get to recovery, then press power to enter recovery. Once you see the android lying on his back, hold power + volume up simultaneously, then release volume. This part can get a little tricky, so be patient :good:
One additional piece of advice is to attempt to load the OS in "safe mode". You can find the method and more information HERE. As you can enter/load the OS (albeit the error messages get in the way), you should be able to get to the power-off/shutdown settings and might be able to load up the system in "safe mode"... I think it's worth a try...
good luck and hope this helped some....
