What's the quality of the WiFi calling feature on the 5X? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm in the market for a used or new phone. The reception at my house is horrible. At best I get weak 3G. How does the WiFi calling feature work on the 5X on t-mobile's network? I've heard is a hit or miss when receiving calls. To tell you the truth the phones I'm debating over are the 5X and the Galaxy S6.

[Q] Signal strength on AT&T?

Hello all. I took advantage of Google's decision to sell the Galaxy Nexus and bought myself one. It'll be here tomorrow. I'm pretty stoked.
I was wondering if anyone who has one of the GSM models would mind commenting on signal strength on AT&T. I have heard good and bad things and I know most of the issues are related to the Verizon model.
Anyone else out there using one on AT&T? How is your signal strength? DBMs? Any comments on dropped calls or data issues?
I have great service with ATT and my nexus. Always have. The GSM version doesn't really have any signal issues like the Verizon one, so you'll be fine.

[Q] How is 4.0.4 Signal on CDMA Nexus?

Hello,
I am looking to get feedback from users on Verizon's CDMA nexus running 4.0.4. I am wondering if the signal quality has been improved? Obviously signal is important to me, and I live in an area that would have signal issues if I don't stay in the beaten path! I like the idea of a pure nexus device; however, it is not worth it if I can't make or receive phone calls.
Thank you for any input!
Verizon In New England Area
I've been running the unofficial 4.0.4 radio for month now in New England. For the most part I get great 4g and a decent 3g coverage when 4g drops. At home it will usually stay in 4g. Sometime it will drop to 3g when it's in my pocket or I'm in the middle of the house. I use it a lot for 4g hotspot seeing I'm on the unlimited plan. At work because it's a huge medal building, it will drop a lot more. We even have cell towers for Verizon on the roof. But I believe at that point I'm too close. With this phone I've noticed that it very rarely drops down lower than 3g giving me bad data connection. This is only my second 4g phone, having the Lg Revolution before. I'm trying to revive the revolution for my wife so she can use the 4g hotspot too. But now I've just flashed the 4.0.4 official radio and I'm going to see how it does. I'll let you know.
I get 1 bar on this new VZW GN, where my CDMA iPhone 4S gets 3. Since this VZW GN came with 4.0.4, I'm not sure what it used to be like.
HTH
I would say get a Motorola RAZR if signal strength is important to you...I live in Jersey and commute to New York, and I've had this phone since launch on VZW...signal strength is not it's forte and has not improved one iota...I've tried every radio that has leaked out, and a bevy of custom roms to boot...no improvement...I'm extremely bummed...

My decision
Well...I wanted to post what I ended up deciding and if I am happy with it or not after a few weeks.
I went with the Verizon Galaxy Nexus.
My previous setup was US Cellular on a Motorola Electrify!
As expected, the signal quality was less than the Electrify; however, most of the signal issues are while I am driving. Where I used to drop out once; I now drop out twice on the same stretch of road. This is only for about a minute though.
My job has 7 different locations with one out in the middle of no where. I have service at all sites which was the biggest decision factor. I do not regret the decision I made 3 weeks later.
I was a bit concerned about the speaker volume, but volume+ fixed that.
The phone quality is great IMO. I have found nothing lacking on the phone except the signal. I was a bit iffy on the camera, but It is better than my Electrify 8mp camera. Plus ICS.... enough said on that.

how's T-mobile connection in Chicago Area?

Thinking about switching to T-mobile in the SW Suburbs of Chicago; I'm on wifi most of the time, so data speed isnt important to me, but, we MUST have good phone call quality in our house.
Is this an issue for anyone in chicago land, or, if we get a phone that is "wifi capable", and we have a fast, strong, wifi network in our house, does this become a non issue?
We had ATT, which was no problem in the house, and recently switched to Sprint, with the hopes of a stong "Spark Network" here; well, one of our phones in Spark compatible, and works fine, but the other 2 phones are HTC One's, not spark "compatible", and have poor phone call quality and reception in the house. We are waiting on an AirRave front Sprint, but, if that doesnt work, we're ready to go to T-Mobile..
Sorry for this weird question here, but, I trust my buds on XDA to give a real report on stuff like this, NOT the people from T-Mobile
Thanks! :good:
What town are you in? I have excellent call quality in Posen/Oak Forest/Orland Park/Crestwood area. And LTE when available is super solid. Seen a best of 39MBPS in Ookla App. I also had ATT until recently. I really can say, that I'm happy I made the switch. I also know many ppl who are on sprint and constantly suffer from dropped calls and data connection issues, my house is a sprint problem area as well btw.

I'm next to burr ridge/willowbrook, in an area called Timberlake.
My Sprint Airrave is supposed to be here tomorrow, and if it doesnt fix the problem, its tmobile and wifi calling for us!
We had Sprint for many years here, using an AirRave, and it was fine, but, a couple of years ago, their network went completely to hell, so we switched to ATT; after awhile, they were just bad to deal with, and Sprint announced this new Spark Network, in Chicago, so we thought, why not, its cheaper than ATT, and with this new network, it will be fine.
Problem is, if you dont have one of their 3 tri band phones,(which I have, but my wife/son do NOT), then making calls in some areas is horrible.
My wife works from home alot, and making calls for her is bad news, especially conference calls on Global Crossing, so if the Airrave, which uses wifi/internet to make calls, doesnt work, its t-mobile for us.
I understand that using wifi to make calls from you house with Tmobile is fantastic, and I have a great, Asus ac1900 wifi router in the house, which gives super fast and strong wifi, so I am sure that t-mobile wifi calls would be clear as a bell here!
thanks for the info :good:

I live in Joliet, and I get great service. Always connected to LTE, and never lose signal. I get spotty service in my apartment, but that may be because I'm on the bottom floor of a 3 story building. It doesn't bother me though because wifi calling works like a charm!

T-mobie has pretty solid service in chicago but if you are in the suburbs go with a wifi capable phone if you have prepaid as you cant roam on prepaid. With a wifi capable phone it wont be an issue.
that's what I thought; it looks like most of their high end phones are wifi capable, so that means perfect calls in a strong wifi house, right?
thanks again!

All T-Mobile smartphones have WiFi calling, so yeah as long as you're in good WiFi coverage you should be ok.. Just keep in mind it cannot switch out of WiFi calling while you are in a call, so if you get out of range during a call in WiFi, it will drop

Wifi calling issue

My wife and I both have a sprint / now tmobile s20 with the same issue. At home I have poor cell signal, 1-2 bars. When I'm on a call using WiFi calling, as soon as I get 2 bars of signal it switch's to volte, and almost always drops the call. The only "fix" I've found is switching the network mode to 2g only, then it will always use wifi calling. Sprint has been no help, and they no longer offer a signal booster. Anyone have any ideas what I can do to stop dropping calls at home?

Since both you and your wife are experiencing the same problem it's likely you're in a dead zone where a decent signal isn't possible due to poor network capabilities. I doubt it's a defect in your devices and T-mobile isn't going to invest in additional equipment for a handful of customers. Your best and realistically only option is switching service providers. If you entered into a fixed term agreement you can terminate it for cause however if your devices are included in a promotion you may have to return them to cancel the agreement. If T-mobile refuses contact your local BBB, that will get their attention.
