Serious problem with Nexus 5x's magnetic sensor! - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear friends,
All my other gadgets magnetic sensors read around 50 uT which the correct value on earth. But my Nexus 5x is reading 21~22 uT. It doesn't have any cover, isn't around any magnetic field, etc.
I have tried calibration (rotating it in 8 pattern, rotating it around its three axes,....) to no avail.
I found out about this while I was using Metal Detector 1.4.1 app by smart tools. I also checked the sensor readings to rule out software related errors but all other apps read the same.
I'd be thankful if you could look in to this and confirm if this is a universal problem with nexus 5x or if I am the only one affected.
Sincerely,
hrkh83

What is the reading from your 5x? If it's 50uT, then it's probably OK.

Oh, I forgot to say!!! It is reading 21~22 uT!!
Could you please check yours?
What shall I do !?

On my 6P I get 50 uT and 120 uT on my 5X.

Thank you.
120 is also way off.
Other Nexus 5x owners?

I get around 50-60 uT.

I tested another Nexus 5x and it was getting 18uT .... I think this could be something that is affecting many Nexus 5x users.
Other Nexus 5x users... Please report your sensor reading!

So what's the problem here? The compass won't point north?

120 is almost 2.5 times the correct value which is 50 uT :crying:
Do you think that I should change mine?

Everyone here knows that you get different readings depending on whether or not your phone is lined up with the earth's magnetic pols right? Because that is the difference that you should be noticing between your devices considering no two people on this thread have held it the exact same direction... or live in the exact same spot on earths surface for that matter.

Sure, if you are going to use the magnetic field function. I have no use for it so it doesn't bother me.

We are talking about the magnitude of Magnetic field... magnitude of vector sum...
Σ B (uT) = B_x + B_y + B_z
Other phones are reading the correct value here... But not my Nexus 5x. So I don't think that my location on earth is causing it.

I already called them and they recommended that I do a factory reset which didn't help. They guy mentioned that they have already seen the issue with Nexus 5. He also mentioned that they have received a Nexus 5x with malfunctioning Barometric pressure!
I checked my barometric pressure reading!! It is reading 850 hPa and my analog Barometric pressure sensor is readin 1010 hPa and Galaxy S6 is reading 1005 hPa.... Very nice Nexus 5x... I will definitely change it!!
I will send some photos later!!

Indeed. My Droid RAZR HD read ~50uT sitting right next to my 5X. Not that I care though.

Neither do I. But I am worried that maybe it is signifying more serious problem. Malfunctioning magnetometer and now a malfunctioning barometer.... I wonder whats next!
So I will return it...
Thank you all :highfive:

Mine is returning 50-55 uT with nothing nearby and of course jumps to > 200 next to my headphones.

New Google Now Feature?

I saw this pop up on Google Now. I've never seen it before and haven't heard anything about it. I guess it's keeping track of how far you walk kind of like a pedometer. Anyone else seeing this?
Same here. Popped up today. Could not find more info.

Great find! What's interesting is that Google has been tracking how much you walk since late September. Did you by any chance just get your device/factory reset it then?
Featured it in a post here
Lets hope we get some more details about it soon.
It appears to use latitude to track your location history.

I had Latitude on for a little while... but I dunno, something just seemed a bit creepy about it so I disabled it a couple months ago. I am not seeing this pop up.

Here's mine. Walking distance may be right, can't say for sure, I walk a lot. But it also says I cycled 11 miles in October. Funny thing is, I don't even own a bike.
No bike here either, still says 1 mile for me
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
So you guys turn the gps on all time and let it track you?
Doesn't it drain battery?
I think it just works if you have enabled location history, without keeping GPS on.

I don't see any option to rename it, even from Pc..

Should I return it?

Just got my note 2 & noticed a small discoloration in the volume button as shown in the picture.
Everything is working perfectly
Is it worth the return?

If it doesn't really require lots of hassle, i would ask for a swap.
If I bought it at a store, I would return it.
It will definitely go back first thing in the morning as I just found that the theft side of the screen is waaaay to unresponsive to the spen.
Thank you guys.

Holy crapola that sucks! I was gonna say (before I read all the way down) that I'm so anal with my stuff that I'd return it in a heartbeat. Now that I see the sensitivity issue I'd obviously return it like you did. Hopefully that doesn't ruin your opinion of the Note 2 though, because it's a truly awesome phone! I've had mine for a few weeks now and I don't know what I'd do without it anymore!

Well, I'm a huge fan of the note concept & I know that Samsung's quality control is very very good but sometimes you get a lemon & you have to deal with it.
I guess I'm just fortunate I never have these issues....how did you purchase in store. ...yet its later outside the store you notice something you SHOULD have noticed at time of purchase.............doesn't everyone inspect their device prior to paying and leaving. As far as the s-pen issues people should adjust their settings mines works just fine you have to tweak the sensitivity to your own UNIQUE handwriting style

bipoler: Sometimes new gadget owners fall victim to the so-called Gollum syndrome: their eyes enlarge, their skintone dulls and greys out, and their cognitive functions are diminished. It can last from a few minutes to a few days, and only the worse failures can stop the symptoms quickly, more subtle defects take longer.

Well I got my unit online from timo's website. Once I got the device 18 hours later it was on its way back. The spen issue is not just a less sensitive area... its a deadzone which the device just does not register anything.

Compass Way Off

My heading on GMaps is always at least 45 degrees off, sometimes the complete opposite direction.
This only happens of I'm stationary. Once I start driving, it then figures out which way I'm heading.
Is this an issue with the GPS or other calibration? I tried that funky "wave it around in a figure 8 trick" with no luck.
Thanks
Matt

I know heat coming from spot next to the camera is normal. But how much hot is actually normal? My GNex can has up to 39° C. It's very uncomfortable to hold it, because my hand is sweating from the heat.

39 C is nothing. My device has gotten to over 50 C according to its own temperature reading.
I have owned multiple Nexus and some get hot more than other. I also find some kernel and settings make the device hotter, such as Franco. Mine get up to 50*C, I switched back to Lean kernel and battery saving governors/scheduler help. Using a case help a little too.

You can get the CPU temp from Trickster MOD or any of the plethora of CPU Temp widgets in the play store.
Just had a post a reply. My CPU routinely gets above 60C and the battery above 55C. The other day it did this with the screen off and in my pocket. It used to be that I had to charge and stream at the same time to get this hot. I've run stock and myriad of ROMs and I never overclock. I think it's just Sprint's poor signal that causes my issues.
Same thing is happening to me and I'm running Franco. Could that be the prob? I thought Franco was the best

Just wondering, particularly if photo sphere isn't working on your nexus 7 2013, if you install AccelermoterTest does the ball move to the bottom left corner - even when the device is on flat ground? Mine does... maybe hardware fault?
