Tab Pro 10.1 overheating? CM 11 and 12 - Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2, 10.1, 8.4 Q&A, Help & Trouble

Hi guys. Just wondering. I've used both cm 11 and 12 /12.1 ROMs from the forum on the tab pro 10.1 and both work great.
Great except for the fact the tablet gets really hot. top right whole area to the right of the Samsung logo even including parts of the screen.
I get a little heat on the stock rom when playing graphic heavy games but with cm it gets much hotter just doing simple things such as web browsing and general multitasking.
Anyone else getting this?
Many thanks.

I have CM 12 installed but I haven't experienced anything like what you described. But I don't play many games. And certainly not when doing simple Web browsing.
Have you checked to see which apps are running and what is their cpu and memory usage?
Sent from my SM-N910T using Tapatalk

Well after trying again and again with fresh installs, it seems the problem no longer occurs. No idea how or what happened.
I find that if I install CM 11 or 12 fresh then it tends to overheat right from the get go. If I install and don't use it much for a day or so then seems the problem does not return. Like the system has to adapt and get used to something or something. Makes no sense. But OK now

It's perfectly normal and discussed at great length. As I understand it, CM is missing several Exynos specific controllers so it tends to run flat out more than it does on the complete stock ROM.

Tab 3 10.1 Laggy?

I am trying to tweak my wife's tablet to get rid of some very annoying lag. It is rooted and I setup Startup Manager and Greenify to lock everything down. The thing still is very laggy, especially in some games (specifically Star Acres).
I have not been able to find anything regarding overclocking this device, so is that even possible? Would a different ROM help speed things up?
The lag is pretty bad and my phones circles around it (i have the OnePlus One).

I wipe Dalvik and cache periodically and that seems to fix a lot of things. I am stock rooted with no performance tweaks (Tab 3 10.1)
Good luck.
It looks like the reason is due to the Galaxy Tab processor. Unity3d was not designed to run on ATOM.
i installed pimpdroid and all my lag stopped.
its alot lighter than stock rom

Tab S 10.5 lag

I've had the Tab S 10.5 for about a month now and the lag while using everyday apps is driving me crazy. My top three offenders are:
1. Chrome
2. Play Newsstand
3. Play Store
I've done the following to help improve things:
- Changed launcher to Nova.
- Disabled bloatware (everything I can without rooting).
- Installed Chrome Samsung support library.
3D heavy games seem to run fine. My last tablet was a HP touchpad running CM11 so I am used to dealing with a few quirks. I stepped up to the Tab S to get away from some of that though. I know Android is infamous for scroll stutter, but it seems to me that a flagship tablet should easily beat out a bootleg touchpad.
Is this on par? Also, does anyone else's tab s get really hot around the touch screen near the Samsung logo? Maybe the Nexus 9 is worth another look. :silly:
Thanks for your comments.
Edit: I've read similar posts on lag. It seems like the argument boils down to: 1. Personal perception or 2. A mysterious "bad batch" of hardware.
i did the same steps,my tab is full of apps and games but i have 0 lag and the browsing is also fcking smooth. In the settings i also turned of features like dual window.
Are you sure you turned off fully power saving mode? About heating,if i play a game like gta or hearthstone i can also feel a warm area under samsung logo but is not hot and pretty common if you play games.
edith and use chrome beta instead of the standard chrome
Chrome lags on the tab s. Happens to most people. To fix over heating i installed a custom kernel that would optimise and prevent heating. Some big games do lag aswell.

I am already using chrome beta. The stock broswer is smoother.
can you upload a video to see the lag we are talking about?
I want to buy this tablet, and Ive read many posts about lag... but actually, is it very annoying? is there any video to see it?

Only on certain apps. Chrome and a few others. On some games it just lags on loading screen but not during gameplay. Watch a veiw reviews on youtube. Theres some videos talking about the lag. Touchwiz launcher also has lag but can be fixed.

I think it depends on your perception of lag and what apps you mainly use. In my case, Chrome and Newsstand are always up so I see the lag constantly. I wish I had a Nexus 9 side by side for comparison. If I get a chance I'll take a video, but it might be hard to see. I played with a demo model at Best Buy and it seemed faster than mine as well.
I came from a iPad mini 2 (last year's model) to this tablet. As smooth as my iPad was I have to say I have very little if any lag on mine. It's runs beautifully for me. I'm OCD, any bit of lag would drive me up the wall. I really don't notice hardly anything. I'm still running bone stock everything minus using Nova launcher. Don't even feel like I need to root or flash anything. Although I'm going to once there is a root released for my model. Maybe I'm just lucky I don't know. Have had zero issues.
I'm used to an overloaded gs3 so this looks ultra smooth to me [emoji3]
It lags more with multiple user logged in, always reboot of you don't need the additional user

For example, this thread's website lags a great deal in chrome beta when scrolling. Other sites aren't too bad. Newsstand is the worst though. Are you using the stock broswer?
This site does lag a little when scrolling. That I do have to admit. For whatever reason it doesn't really bother me however. I've never noticed any scroll stutter on stock android so I attribute it to touchwiz. This thing debloated or running a custom rom probably flys. I imagine any scroll stutter would be gone at that point.
I use the stock browser. I was never a fan of chrome. I know that on touchwiz your going to get the best performance from the stock browser unless there's a fix I'm unaware of which could be a possibility. Newsstand I actually haven't used so I can't speak for it. TouchWiz is just eating up so much ram. I'm like always at 1.5 to 2 gigs of ram with nothing running (other then the tons of unnecessary system apps I can't terminate) That is pretty ridiculous to me. Is touchwiz smooth as stock android? Definitely not. But I really have little to no lag other then scroll stutter on certain sites. I'm still going to root and debloat this thing when it's available for my model so I can truly experience the power of this tablet.
Lol, chrome sucks
It's about time Samsung optimised their flagship device. Had 3 since July and they all lag, stutter when scrolling and render pics poorly. Nova didnt fix the problems and changing some apps like using chrome beta marginally helped.
About time they fixed this via an update rather than just forget about the device and launch more/different models. Samsung will always fail unless it focuses on a core product set and spend the time making the hardware work properly with the software.
I was attacked when I first got my first device for stating lag. Whether an first time user or someone who doesn't want to root (glad I didn't after having 3 replacements), I shouldn't have to kill apps, install different roms and root.
Certain other OS fix problems like these quickly. Where's support from Samsung??
I have the note 4, their es8000 led TV, fridge freezer and various other bits so I'm not a Samsung hater by any means, just someone who expects upgrades to fix problems.
It's hard to determine how much lag is there until you run the same apps side by side with another tablet.
Over Xmas I got a chance to do just that. Ran S 10.5 side by side with my sister's nexus 7 2013. Both running kit kat (hers is 4.4.3 instead of 4.4.2).
Play Store and chrome both run smoother on hers, less jerking and stopping when scrolling. Tapatalk about same. She has Google now launcher, feels faster and smoother than nova launcher on mine. Overall, every thing just feels a little smoother and more fluid.
Granted, the nexus is 1920x1200 so it's pushing fewer pixels around, but the nexus is one year older and I paid $179 for it vs $379 for the S.
I think Samsung slapped on the OLED display and said heh, good enough. Which is true because I bought it
Custom Rom?
I made a rom that is all stock, just a few optimisations. Better performance, better batterylife and so on, here you go:

I'd use only stock browser, if it had a full screen option and some gestures, but nope.
My alternative browser is maxthon pioneer, it has everything but stutters a lot
I've had my S 10 since August....I don't like chrome, never have, but after reading all this I opened chrome and came to this forum and I see no issues at all. NONE, other than I don't like chrome
I'm stock not rooted or ROMed. I have Apex launcher installed since day one and disabled all the Samsung and google bloat I could disable.
I have no issues with this tablet other than posting on some forums is a little quirky but that's just the way things are. I normally use Dolphin with the Jetpack or Boat Browser for tablet.
I love this tablet! Sure beats the stuffing out of my Asus TF700T! What a total POC that is!

I just throw in a wipe cache once every few days, and stock browser experience is very smooth, even with the second account logged on, with Facebook, dropbox, carousel and plenty other services in background
Don't worry about the Lag
This lag on Tab S is only temporarily, the Android 5.0 will get rid of 90% of the lag. I know this for fact because I have Note 3 with Touch-wiz it lags often, after installing Android 5.0 I have NOT ONCE run into lag after 1 month of using it.
As of now, the Tab S is supporting android 5.0 cm 12 which there should definitely be no lag but again its unofficial ROM as of now, there are still things they are working on. Samsung's android 5.0 will get rid significant amount of lag, because Android 5.0 have 60 fps animation smoothness, and efficient RAM usage.
I've also heard rumors Samsung is working to refreshing their Touchwiz Interface with slim amount of lag. So, the future is promising.
As of now, if you really can't stand the lag, Install the Android 5.0 ROM for Cm 12, there are afew things not working in their such as Camera, NFC or something else, but the usage should show NO LAG!!!

Cyanogenmod for Galaxy tab S??

Galaxy Nexus is very slow and laggy and refuses to be any faster

I've had my galaxy nexus for a while and i've put up with the slow response and lag up until now. Most of my apps take forever to use and other just don't even work anymore because there's too much lag. If i even have more than 1 or 2 apps opened, my phone (for whatever reason) just can't handle it, heats up like crazy, and just drains so much battery that I have to take out my battery and wait for a few minutes just so to let it cool down and reset it.
I've tried a few of the better options which is to root my device, get slimkat android 4.4.4 (which kind of worked), and get lagfix premium along with greenify. But after all of that and trying a few other options, my phone is still as slow and laggy as ever. what else is there that i can do? If I need to provide any other information on my phone, let me know and I will reply.
So just to clarify, when use installed your roms you did a full clean wipe, yes?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Free mobile app
oh wow u are facing the exact same problems as me though im on aokp rom. it got so bad till i decided to come here to look for an alternative solution too! was hoping to find a new lightweight rom to see if it solves the problem since aokp is like long dead.
so you already tried the slimrom, that's normally my solution to phones being slow I personally use ziyan's cm 12.1 beta builds and for me they are really fast and pretty reliable, they've for just a few minor issues I don't mind, maybe that's something for you to consider

Galaxy Nexus and Pokemon GO

Hi guys,
Has anyone managed to properly run pokemon GO, and if so, what ROM are you using?
Curently I'm using the ZMOD 5.1.1 (Maguro) but whenever I try to sign in with my Google account, the app just closes.
regards
Yer I'm getting the same crash point, using a cm13 ROM.
Kinda doubt it will ever run on this phone, game requirements are asking for 2GB RAM.
I can run it with the CM13 ROM but my phone gets really hot and crashes/reboots after 5-10mins of playing

Who would've thought the mighty Gnex can run Pokemon Go?
Works fairly well considering it's using 300mb RAM ;P
Catching Pokemons is sometimes pretty laggy with the virtual reality mode turned on (using the camera), but with it turned off its fairly close to fluid
Thanks for your work again
PS: Might try CM13, as some more RAM might help performance

It hot rebooted for me on CM12.1 once, when I opened it for the first time. But at that point the phone was up for a couple of days. Works fine on 12.1 when freshly booted.
Played for over an hour yesterday. No complaints.
Can't post any proof right now, as the servers are down again
Shine ROM 340 mb RAM
Try SHINE ROM
-Laggy but works out.
-I did´t installed gapps but i think they are in the ROM.
-And stop google automatic update.
-Download the APK 29.2
-You are rdy for you lag experience.
-First try to open arena didnt worked sorry boys.
Update to 4.3 will come out?
I have it running on Resurrection Remix ROM (marshmallow) (toroplus) but often crashes.

I swapped over to CM12.1 and it works way better. It still gets warm, but no where near as much as before. I can charge and play the game. I had the game running for about 3h ( about 1h of that being charging ) before it went to hot and force rebooted. I think that is more then okay as you rarely will have the app open with out breaks for that long. With closing the app every now and then ( just locking the screen) the game runs without an issue what so ever. I still get weird artifacting on the map for some reason and it has hick ups every now and then, but tbh it just seems to be the game in a lot of the cases. So I think 12.1 CM is certainly the way to go with this one.
I'm using Ziyan CyanogenMod 13.0 (07/06) and it is so laggy it is unplayable, even when scrolling in the pokemon list or in menus,
sometimes it gets more fluid in map mode, but that doesn't last for long, also quite often it hangs totally or reboots the whole phone.
Why is that? Ingress works so well...

Pokémon go is a lot heavier than Ingress.
Scrolling in menus is also rather slow for me, but it works.

I think I've found out why: my phone without opening any app, just right after boot has about 755-770MB of RAM used out of 970,
apparently Pokèmon go manages to use up to 500+MB of RAM, so that is the main problem, there's not enough free memory so the phone first starts swapping and then freezes when it can't keep up.
There should be some major flaw in the Pokémon Go up to be such a memory hog.
Out of curiosity how much free RAM do you guys have on a freshly booted GNEX with CM12 and CM 13?

The Gnex is handed down in the family, so I cannot check right now, but you could prevent a lot of your apps from starting at boot in settings.
Are you using the official Facebook apps? They are horrible memory wise.
No I'm not using any facebook app since I know how much they suck. I only use Swipe and I've disabled all the apps that don't need to start at boot time.
Fact is that just looking at the memory stats for the last 3h it says that 304MB are used by Android OS, 91MB by Google Play Services, 88MB by Android System, 66MB by System UI, 37 by messaging system, 26 by Trebuchet, 14 by Android Keyboard, 9.2MB by Google Play Music and so on. Those are already whoopping 635.2MB used by very basic and needed system apps.
Now the system seems to have stabilized after a while using about 722MB out of 970, but it is still too much IMHO considering I have really few apps open and beside the not mentioned Line app (since it's not fundamental) that uses 31MB all the rest are small things...
Just realised the app was crashing for me because I set a limit on background apps. #derp
As many of you said, the game is Starting and running quite well on CM12.1.
But there are other things to consider. In my case, my main problem is that, with these overloaded servers, if you don't have a reliable and fast network the game won't log in. So if the game stops (very usual) and you have to restart it without wifi, sometimes it's impossible. For example, connected to wifi the game starts almost 90% of the time, but when you get out in the wild you can find it hard to reconnect.
The navigation throught menus and items it's also difficult, and battling in a gym is complicated...
I guess the main problem will always be available ram memory...
Just signed up to say that CM 12.1 works better than CM 11.
With CM 12.1 there is some lag and draw flickering. With CM 11 the game would crash a lot and the player would stand in place and only rotate.
This will suffice until my 6P arrives on Wednesday.

That's not a patch, is the apk file for those who can't download the game on the Play Store if the game is not available in their own region.
I have pokego running on gnex using latest zinjin cyanogenmod (5.1) and it works rather well. Anyways, it's the only app running - i made the phone dedicated pokemon machine
I'm using the OMAP4 AOSP Project and it runs. Performance is ok on the main map screen, but as soon as you enter a catch event or a gym battle, there is stutter all over the place. It's also very hard to navigate menus as the frame rate is really low.

P600 stuck on 4.4.2 - need upgrade for speed and reliability

I have an Australian version (XSA) of the Note 10.1 sm-p600 which was only ever upgraded to 4.4.2 (latest official release).
I find the performance sluggish when playing games (eg Clash Royale) and want to see if a new ROM will improve the speed but want minimal fuss. I would like to know people's suggestions of which ROM to use that will give me a faster but still stable experience.
Is the official 5.1.1 any good? Do I need to go custom? I want to avoid having to do complicated installs as well if possible.
I mostly play games and watch YouTube on it and maybe some sports apps to get scores. Nothing that really requires root (and some of the sports apps don't like root).
Thanks in advance.
Just checked my build and it looks like it is already on 5.1.1 - I must have updated it last year and forgotten.
Still not happy with the load times of Clash Royale, any other suggestions about making the tablet run faster? It seems to still have a decent processor and RAM despite being a few years old.
Well, you're running 5.1.1 right? Probably the only thing left is to go to Development section and install Prime Kernel V6, it's the last version for lollipop touchwiz. That one has a couple of tweaks to improve the standard performance offered by stock/factory software. Make sure to backup everything, and then flash the zip. Updating kernel has no need to wipe or reformat anything so no data is lost, but do it just in case.
To get more juice out, you'd have to install custom ROMs, like LiquidDeath from the Original Development section, that has a couple of new stuff like the updated GPU driver ported from marshmallow touchwiz apparently, and from my subjective view, performance is better along with increased battery life.
I don't do much gaming, but on stock 5.1.1 with stock kernel I usually get around 7 hours screen on time browsing the web, but with LD I can go around 10 to 11 hours easy with the same usage.
Thanks. I'll check out the kernel first.
Would you suggest LiquidDeath or LineageOS?
Sorry for the late reply, lol. I assume you've been running touchwizz/stock Samsung lollipop this while, but using that custom kernel I've mentioned? How was the experience? If that works fine with you, I believe there's no need for custom ROMs.
I test and run random ROMs many times, liking to flash stuff and all. If you want to try out the waters, the most rock-solid, no-issues release so far is probably the last release of LiquidDeath, mostly because it has less crud, and therefore fewer potential to go wrong. Lineage is good too, but I prefer keeping it simple.
