I just noticed that in the Running Services, System takes more than 800 MB of RAM and if I open the camera app, it could take up to 1GB of RAM. I tried to boot into safe mode, unfortunately it doesn't make things any better. System still takes more than 600 MB of RAM. And after 1-2 days on without a reboot, it takes more than 700 MB of RAM again.
However, everything's fine on my Nexus 5(6.0) and Z3C(5.1), system always uses at most 600 MB of RAM. I don't need to reboot these phones every 2 days which I have to do with my 5X otherwise it will become intolerable slow. People always say the reason your phone is lagging and stuttering must be related to those 3rd-party apps you've installed, but those apps I installed are exactly the same with my other phones.
I also found some people don't have any performance issue at all... But I don't think it's something with the hardware. Maybe system on nexus 5x need to use that much RAM because of the camera and fingerprint scanner? But one thing I'm pretty sure is that my phone gets very laggy after 2 or 3 days... App redraws are killing me...
I noticed the same thing. When I reboot my phone after 2-3 days I notice the speed different a LOT.
Even though the same usage is the same.
Is your phone encrypted / encrypted?
im running uber rom unencrypted and have similar system usage (790-810 MB).
Checked system usage an hour later and was back down to 600 MB.
5X is a 64bit phone, so the system and apps may use more memory.
Looks like 5x buyers run into the same **** like Nexus 9...? There is something going wrong in the OS and Google not able to fix it, or they have been fatally wrong when they decided that 2 GB is enough ram.

I'm not sure but I'm testing it now. I decrypted my phone yesterday and waiting to see if there any performance/memory advantages.
If not I might as-well encrypt it again for more security.
The NEXUS 9 was 64 bit and had 2 gb ram, likewise for the NEXUS 5x, however I found the memory management is much better, 3gb should have been used for 5x and 9 and 4gb for 6p.

I've encountered an odd problem on my phone recently, only in the last week or so. It first started while using Myn's Synergy RLS1 and playing Plants vs. Zombies--my phone started to stutter/lag a bit, then rebooted back to the 'Synergy' flash screen. It got stuck in reboot, so I pulled the battery, did a wipe of the cache/dalvik, then rebooted and all was well.
Thinking it might have been a stress on the CPU, I installed Synergy+Godmode (had been using it a few days before for about two weeks with few issues). This worked pretty well until last night when it stuttered again, then this morning while updating my apps from the Market the phone rebooted again, and this time no matter what I seem to do I can't get it back up.
I did clear the cache/dalvik and got it to load up Android, but the phone application kept force closing so I couldn't do anything and had to reboot again. Since then I haven't been able to get it back up.
I can access the Recovery (obviously) which is a plus, but I can't get anything else. I've waited for an hour and now it seems stuck on the white "HTC Evo 4G" screen.
I'm thinking I might just have to reinstall the OS, but I'm curious why this is happening at all.
Could it be that I have too many games installed on my system? I have a 2GB SD-ext3 for games and applications; is it possible that too many are trying to run in the background and it's overloading the RAM causing a crash/reboot?
Any thoughts or suggestions on how to avoid this in the future would be appreciated. Thanks!
yeah, I have to clear the stinking ram EVERYTIME I play a game or it slows down. our phones really suck. wish there was a ram upgrade option. lol. or is there? :-D But I'm going to wait for the quad core processors for our phones and get one at that time. cause they should have at least 1GB of memory instead of 512 like ours. ACTUALLY I HOPE they put 2-3GBs of ram in our phones! that would be nice!
oh btw, you should ALWAYS USE A CLASS 10 SDCARD! trust me, it does go faster when you store your games and such on it.

I actually have a Patriot 16GB Class 10 SDcard. It is very nice and a definite performance increase. But I'm still having this issue.
I did just wipe/reinstall the ROM, so hopefully it doesn't come back. Although I am sad to lose ~3 days worth of stuff I did on my phone. (Last Titanium backup was Sunday)
I haven't picked one of these up yet, so I'm curious. Could someone check the available RAM after a fresh boot and tell me what it is?
I'm interested to see how much of the 3GB Touchwiz (and associated apps) takes and how much we actually have available to us.
7when I clear the ram it's roughly 2.5GB. tthat's after it closes 23 or so active apps.
Thanks. I'm sure a lot of those apps start right back up. I'm more interested in the available ram after a fresh boot because that will be a more accurate picture of what we have to work with.

Thanks! Wow, that tablet uses over half the ram for the system? I was thinking maybe a gig, but that's crazy.

I doubt it's all for the system. a lot of that bloatware is probably sucking up a bit too. as well as a few apps that I have running at staert up. 1.4GB is still quite a bit for an android tablet.

It is, I guess. My Nexus 10 sits around 500 free and it tends to refresh a lot, so I guess we still get a lot more overhead on this tablet.
Thanks again for checking.
Is that normal? How much free RAM do you guys have?
doesn't look like it, but mine is the same. I believe it is the lollipop memory leak issue...so as usual we just have to wait it out
Sucks that just as we are finally seeing 3 Gig of RAM we end up in the same situation as when we had 2Gig ?
I have not upgraded to to 2015 Flagship Standard yet but ...
I was hoping to START at the beginning of Boot Up with about
1.7 -2 GIGs of free RAM for Tasking etc.
I think " upgrading" to Lollipop on many Devices could create more problems than it solves - right ?
And the supposed Wifi Calling and VoLTE are not going to work
because they are Carrier Specific Software which must come directly from your Service Provider.
Free RAM is UNUSED/WASTED RAM! Understand? The more software/applications that are pushed into RAM the better because it is available to do whatever it needs to do without having to go and search for it and place into RAM! If and when you need more RAM for something new, say like opening another application...then Android will move out of RAM whatever is not being used and replace it with the new software. If your phone had 10GB of RAM it would still look nearly full. This is a GOOD thing. It's all still available for use when needed. Remember that RAM is always the fastest part of your phone. Of course the more RAM you have the more applications you can have open at any one time without any lag/stutter. But for now 3GB of RAM is quite good for a cell phone on Android.

Come on... I have Galaxy S4 now (going for S6 today). The S4 comes with 1.8GB usable memory but when it reaches arount 1.5 GB it starts lagging, and by lagging I mean a lot! The fact is that when the device has less RAM it gets laggy and it works better when it has more free memory.
Anyway the higher memory usage is probably of how Lollipop works - it preloads the entire app in the RAM instead of loading it from the flash. It is meant to speed up loading but it takes more memory and I can argue for the effect.
once there are some custom roms, this "issue" will be addressed.
until then, you just have to deal with it
I might be missing something coming from a Nexus 6, but the 2GB ram in my new 5x seems to always be full, and just full of Android OS.
I've rebooted and cleared the cache when it gets unbearable, but it seems to make little difference. In a day, I'm right back to maxed out ram and slowness (especially in the Camera app) ensues.
In fact, I've not seen anything less that 1.6 GB ram used, even after both those processes.
I'm probably in the minority (at least here on xda) who never looks at RAM. I've gone into the "memory" setting once since I've owned the phone (11 days). I haven't cleared cache. My 5X works 99% perfect as far as lag/stutters or slow performance, for my use. Do you play a lot of games or use huge memory intensive apps maybe or does your phone slow to a crawl often, could be an app/s?
Depends what you have running, honestly. I use my phone a fair amount. Mostly for texting or to quickly Google something, so I usually don't have 10 apps all running at the same time. Right now my phone is using 1.3gb of RAM. I barely check. I've never felt that it's needed more. That being said, I suppose you can try flashing the clean ROM that has surfaced in the Development forum if you're willing to Root and unlock the bootloader.
I've been noticing this as well.
My Nexus 5X usually runs at 1.3-1.4GB used and from what I've read that is a good thing because that means the RAM is being used efficiently by caching things used a lot and only freeing up memory when something else actually needs it. So far, after 10 days, I've only seen a very tiny bit of lag.
Yah it seems like 2GB is not nearly enough for moderate to heavy use. Another oddity is that the system tells me there is a sizable amount of free RAM (like 600~700 MB) when 3rd party apps say there is less than 200 MB left.
No problems here. Runs just as well (if not better) than my 2 year old Nexus 5.
compared to the S3 with nameless rom 5.0 (the only one that did not randomly freeze up) the 5X is fairly faultless with very few niggles

I'm guessing it's because of how memory is likely managed in Android and how the system vs 3rd party app report it. If you look at the Memory tab in the Resource Monitor on Windows 7 you will see memory that is "In Use" which is actually being used by programs. then you have memory that is "Stand By" which is memory that was used by previous programs/files but is technically "available" but keeping the old stuff there in case you use it again soon. If some thing else needs the memory then it is the stuff in "Stand By" that gets reallocated first. Then you have "Free" which really is free. I think Android memory management works in a similar way. If that is the case then the system might be showing you "Free" + "Stand By" since "Stand By" technically is available for use while the 3rd party app just shows what is marked as "Free".
Not sure if this is the case. Just a guess.
I know unused ram is wasted ram, but I'm constantly at 90% ram and it's causing the phone to lag and stutter to the point its unusable unless I reboot then I'm good. Just wanted to see if anybody was going through the same thing or if I have a rouge app up to something.
I've noticed that myself.. That is why I have debloated my phone without root. I have also notice the biggest user of the ram is the Android OS 1.3 Gb.

Same here. It's a typical LG thing. Their Android mods are slick and lovely, but they're far from lightweight.
I moved from a Sony XZ1 Compact to a G7, and it is generally a significantly slower, laggier experience. With the Sony it would generally use less than 2gb of RAM at the outset. I could come back to an app a week later and it'd still be open. With this G7 I think it's rare to see it under 3gb consumption, and every time I open the camera I'm evicted most other apps from memory.
Then there's the lag! I thought a years newer flagship tech would have minimized the LG lag experience, but no.
Also no, at least for T-Mobile uS G7, no root, no AOSP and official device trees. I am made of regret, definitely never another LG, and Sony for me from here on out.
This phone has given me the least amount of issues with lag and freezes out of any phone I've had. I do a lot of gaming on here and rarely have an issue. I try to install as much as possible on my SD card, I don't know if that would make a difference with RAM usage, and I don't leave a bunch of apps running in the background.
