I just got my Epic 4G Touch today, got it rooted with CWM via the Zedomax v3 kernel. Now I'm not sure what made my phone overheat, it was super hot on both sides and even a small icon with a red thermometer popped up while it was charging. Is it the kernel itself or is it because I had it overclocked with SetCPU at 1.6ghz. I thought it would be stable but I could be wrong.
Can anybody tell me if they've had overheating issues with overclocking? If I don't overclock will I have issues with the Zedomax kernal? Thanks.

Are you overclocking at all? I should have looked at the temp from setcpu, but once I felt how hot it was I turned it off asap. I reflashed stock kernel, and reflashed zedomax v3. I'll try it again without overclocking and see if it gets hot once more. Hopefully it doesn't.
*UPDATE: Charged the phone for 20 mins, looked at it and it had a message "Charging has been paused, temperature is too high." I checked setcpu and it was at 120F I guess I'll go back to stock kernel and charge it to see if it gets this hot.
Did the stock kernel fix this issue for you? I've had mine for 1 week, 1st day I rooted & flashed Starburst 1.9...last night I was charging (Motorola charger), streaming Netflix w/audio over BT for about 2.5 hours when phone locked up. I powered down by holding power button & when the "off" screen with the battery indicator came up it also had a flashing thermometer on the screen.
It will be in very similar conditions tonight, so I'll see if that was a fluke...hopefully it's not going to be a regular occurrence!
So has anybody else had this issue?
Carl
I'll wake up in the morning to find my phone off and extremely hot. It will also randomly reboot throughout the day and won't stop until I remove the battery. Any ideas on whats going on and what I could possibly do to fix it?
Sounds like either the screen is staying on....or its overclocked waaay to much... A voltage setting.... Or simply just some app or widget running 24/7
Causing the phone to get hot....make sure tethering and wifi are off at night while your sleeping... Kill the GPS if your passed out too...

Wifi may be the culprit for the overheating issue, but throughout the day wifi and 3g are barely on unless I need internet. Kinda frustrating when you're in the middle of something and your phone randomly reboots and doesn't stop rebooting until you pull the battery. lol I was also thinking it could be the rom im on (always used blazer) but no one else is having the issue therefore it's probably not the rom.
A lot of times an out of control process will cause that too. I don't know and I doubt this phone would power down if it got too hot. Rebooting seems like a no go also since that's not going to help cool it down, if anything it would heat it up. If it powered down and stayed off or shut down as soon as it started to boot - now that would make sense.
Get something like Watchdog or OS Monitor - use it to watch your processes. When it starts getting hot for no reason, check them to see if anything is running. You can set Watchdog to alert you if anything stays over xx% of cpu usage for a specific amount of time.
Do you notice any lag before this happens?
I had the problem with the overheating at night and not charging. I tracked it down to set cpu and the over clocking profile. I use my phone at night as a clock with the clock widget and found that the default over overclock profile I was using for the screen on was in effect even tho I had another profile for charging so what I did was set a profile for 100 priority to under clock to 800 starting at 9:00 PM becuase I go to bed at 10 when I have to work the next day and have had no problems since. Also I did hav some problem's with instability and rebootting at 16oo so I clocked mine to 1400 still fast but doesn't heat up the phone or cause reboots.

The phone will lock up right before it reboots over and over. When the phone starts up it'll stay on for a couple minutes and then restart. It will keep doing so until I pull the battery.
I'll download one of those apps and see what I can find.

I haven't used setcpu on this phone yet, so maybe the rom i'm using is overclocking the phone. This morning when I woke up around 9 it was off and very hot and did not charge, even though it was plugged in. When I turned it on, it was only at 62%. I know it was on and was working around 430 or so when I woke up in the middle of the night. I don't know if it was charging at that time or not though.

A ROM won't overclock your phone. It may have a built in overclock option but that's user defined. I had this issue also but I noticed that I would have it laying on top of a shirt or under a pillow (very dumb).
I can replicate the issue if I charge the phone and place it under my pillow. The phone will overheat and shut off. If I pop out the battery it's super hot and I have to blow on it to cool it down. I stopped doing that and just set it on the floor and charge it if need be.
I charge my phone in the daytime and leave it off the charger at night. It's safer and you never know if it can catch fire while you're sleeping.

At night I set it on my nightstand and there is nothing by it, and it only does it about once a week i'd say. Kinda frustrating when you set an alarm to get up at a certain time and it doesnt go off cuz the phones off. I do have a real alarm clock, but I know how to turn it off in my sleep. Using my phone allows me to have to answer an equation to turn the alarm off. It's no big deal if I don't get up with an alarm during the wk, but it is nice to get up early and get a head start on the day. Now that I think about it, maybe the alarm clock app i'm using is causing the phone to overheat at times...
Drat!
I was hoping someone was able to diagnose and solve this issue. I've had this same problem/behavior for the last month now. And it's only getting worse :\ Also worth noting is that when the battery overheats, it smells like dill+mint (very weird) ... so it may be a bad battery. When I get a sec, I'll run to the sprint store and pick up a new one and test that out for a while.
Take the battery out and try to spin it on a flat surface... does it spin freely? If so its bad

I have had this problem a couple times before but it stopped for a long while. Then last night when I was charging, it overheated and shut off but this time it won't charge again, won't turn on at all and when it's plugged in there is a very dim blue light that flashes where the notification/charging LED is. I can barely see the light flashing but it is there. When I first plug in the charger I do see the battery with the loading animation and the battery is empty but then the screen goes black after a second or less and the dim blue LED starts flashing.
I let the phone and battery cool down for a long while, took it out and set it out for a while and it still won't charge at all. This really sucks because I have a 3-day weekend and I can only play Guild Wars 2 on the hotspot on my phone that won't turn on
I am using Mijjz Blend The Goodness with Sleshepics the governers 1.2.3 kernel that was flashed through the ROM updater, it's been working fine for the past couple weeks. I am not using any overclocking/undervolting profiles or anything like that besides what was put into the kernel already.
Please help D: I really want to play Guild Wars.... Q,Q
hope this helps,
i also have setcpu install in a stock rom with overclock and underclock enable
here is the profile settings in my setcpu that might help you solve your problem
profile1.screen off => cpu speed is set 500mhz(high) to 200mhz(low) in governor.conservative mode
profile2.in call => cpu speed is set 500mhz to 200mhz in gov.ondemand mode
profile3.battery temperature is greater than 44c(111f) degree => cpu speed is set 500 to 200 conservative
profile4.11pm to 7am(sleep time) => cpu speed is set 500 to 200 conservative
profile5.battery percentages drop less than 50% => cpu speed is set 1000mhz to 200mhz in ondemand mode
whenever those conditions hits when the phone is on, setcpu will lower the speed for me and consequently reduce the heat issues for me
because i run my phone in 1.7ghz ondemand mode all the time. my phone is the white version which have a newer cpu and i know for a fact
that the older black version epic4g-touch can only go as high as 1.5ghz before problems arise such as kernel panic and overheat
good luck
I had this issue. Man, after a month of looking for a solution, i think I found a solution, at least for my issue. My phone would reboot at least 5 times in a row, and get very hot. This is what worked for me; when the phone reboots, take the battery out, wait 5 seconds, hold power button and volume down to get to reboot into recovery, wipe out Dalvik cache, and then fix permission and reboot.... Hope this works for you too.

Hey I'm running jedi X 13 with the saber kernel 23. I noticed that my phone started heating up where the processor is located (top left of the screen) when playing more demanding games like nova 3 or gta 3. I checked trickster mod to get my cpu temp and it was reaching roughly around 56°C and 58°C. Just wondering if that is an oddly high temperature or if it's fine. I know they can get hot but after searching I found answers staying it should stay below 50°C to it shouldn't be above 30°C. Thanks for your time!
Is there any way to turn the thermal engine off, or partly off?
Ok. I don't want to melt my 1s, but its really annoying, that it doesn't let me decide the cpu freq.
In this state my phone is a piece of ****. So whenever i want to take a photo, or gameing a little bit, its getting hot, and then it takes the cpu freq to 300Mhz and turns off the other 3 cores....
I can't use this phone in the summer, it is alwalys overheated even when i'm just do some light browsig.
I searched topics to this problem, and find some, but neither worked, as i'm using CM 12.1.
At this point i just want to take over the cpu controll. I tried serveral cpu controll app, but none of them was able to lock the cpu freq at max as the device brings it down.
I don't care how hot the device is. This cpu meant to bear 70+ celsius, so 65 celsius shouldn't harm the device.
Please give me some suggestions, i'm lost. I can't use my phone in its full performance
I'm just sad that i thought its solvable.
I am trying to figure out if my temps are normal or not.
My T700 is on the latest 5.0.1.
While its idle the temps are around 40c-50c.
However when the proc is being used even ever so slightly it will spike to 60c-75c.
I decided to run some tests like AnTuTu and when it gets to the CPU part of the tests it spikes as high as 80c-90c
Is this normal? I tried to do this to one at the store and the results were still around 80c.
Im trying to decide between the T230 and the T700 for my daugher.
She mainly uses it for educational games and movies etc.
That device wont break 40C even when running AnTuTu.
Please post your results and any insight you might have.
Thanks!
spiking to 60-75c is normal 90c is a a bit too hot, but if it`s only at 90c for a few seconds that is not a problem, if you can find an app that can do a graph of the temperature while running AnTuTu and see how long it stays at 90c
I have been trying to find the maximum temps for arm cpu`s but i cannot find anything, but on another android forum they recommended keeping the temp under 80c
