WiFi Hotspot Stopped Working Suddenly - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I've been using my phone as WiFi hotspot a long time. Today, it just stopped working and it won't work now. Other devices can find my M9, connect to it but internet doesn't work on those devices. I've an international unlocked version M9 all stock non rooted.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanking in anticipation.

Do you have data available to use? It's for sharing mobile data, not sharing wifi.
I wish I stole my HTC M9.

who is your carrier? t-mobile has a limit on data over hotspot. sounds like you reached your limit

Of course its for data plan. I've 30GB data plan monthly and i still have 8GB left, but its not working anymore.
I installed FoxFi (a tethering app) and it has my hotspot up and running again. Don't know
what was wrong and what it fixed but it working finr again now. Why wouldn't stock Hotspot app won't work suddenly but a third party would?

Can't get Foxfi/Mobile Hotspot to work stock, will root definitively make it work?

Hey guys, I just bought myself a HTC One V to upgrade from an Optimus V on VMs Beyond Talk plan. The Optimus severed me well for a while but the internal storage limitation and general sluggishness of the phone prompted me to update. One thing it handled very well though was running Foxfi so I could tether my iPad to it, which actually became my main reason for using the phone other then internet radio and talking. However, this is something that is not working out-of-the-box on my HTC One V, even using Apex Launcher to reveal the hidden "Mobile Hotspot" application on the phone will not work and does the same thing (allows hotspot to be created, lets devices connect, but does NOT allow internet access to the devices) So before I send this back and return to the safety of my Optimus V I'd just like to know for sure if one of the many root-needed tether apps out there will allow an iPad to connect to a mobile Wifi hotspot created by this phone (not USB or bluetooth DUN) because I see many posts out there that state rooting did not help the issue. Thanks in advance guys, keep up the good work.
Do restore factory it may work.
hit thanks if I helped u!!!

If not, one of the many gurus around here can help you to safely unlock the bootloader and root your phone... believe me, once you jump in the pool, you don't wanna get out. For any general assistance in that area, feel free to also message me as I am more than happy to help you out.
I rooted my gf's virgin mobile htc one v and absolutely no tethering apps work. Also there are no responses to the tethering threads on the forum. So much for the gurus

I've been trying to get wifi tethering working on stock roms and it hasn't been going well, however, I'm on PACman rom right now with wifi tethering working like a charm
I'm running the rooted stock rom and the standard yellow wifi tether app works fine for me. Sometimes it will randomly go down and have to be restarted but not more than once a day. Also I've never been able to get FoxFi to work on this phone yet.
Settings I use if this helps you guys who can't get it working:
Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Setup-Method: Netd-Ndc (master)
WiFi-driver reload: on
Routingf fix: on
what is the "standard yellow wifi tether app" ?
The app he is referring to is: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Use the settings he mentioned in his post. Your device does need to be rooted but I can confirm that it will allow tethering with no problem on stock ROM.

Thank you!!!! I had rooted my One V today and tried a few tether apps but none of them worked. Remembered I made this thread a while back asking about it and figured I should check it out. This was the first app I tried and of course it didn't work, but I applied the settings you suggested and now works like a charm!! Will still probably flash to something else but just knowing it works on stock is reassuring. Much appreciated!

I'm in the same boat, I posted here long time ago and decided to check again today and it looks that there is a fix now. So how do you like the phone over the LG Optimus V? I bought the HTC ONE V a couple of months ago but didn't activate it because I need the tethering once in a while. How did you root it?
Wifi hotspot only works on JB roms it seems.

[Q] T-mobile galaxy S2 hotspot

Hello, One of the main reasons for me buying a galaxy s2 and switching to T-Mobile unlimited from virgin mobile was to use wifi hotspot in my car for streaming radio and the like. well when i got it i found out that not only did it not work, but i cant even pay extra to have it as it's not supported by my 70 dollar a month plan. I haven't rooted my phone or installed any other roms on it, it's just stock.
do any of you know which rom would support mobile hotspot so i can use it if any? id hate to go back to virgin mobile after spending all this money to have a fast network.
-thanks

I'm pretty sure almost all of them support free tethering. From my experience, any CM ROM will have free tethering. I have always been a die hard fan of CM and never really used any other ROM except the super sexy MIUI. Which I am using the JB version atm. The only issue with this ROM is the lack of WiFi calling but I will gladly trade WiFi calling for the sexiness that is MIUI! Pretty stable so far! No issues.
You should try CM9. Its an ICS ROM and is better than CM10 IMHO. Only because CM9 allows you to tweak it a bit more. Cyanogenmod is the most stable ROM out IMHO. Def a wise choice that you will not regret.
The thing about tethering is it uses your data plan. So if you have anything less than unlimited.... your most likely going to run into problems. That throttling crap is a pain in the butt! I had a 2GB plan and used it up in a few days due to YouTube and Pandora and it would take 10 minutes just to load Facebook. I also use T-Mobile but I paid the extra $10 a month for unlimited.

Just as codecaine21 mentioned, most of the custom ROMs out there have tethering capabilities. If you will be tethering via a laptop, be sure to see this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677490 . You may need to change the UA string in your laptop's web browser to avoid being redirected to a t-mobile mobile web plan page. If you are tethering using a mobile device, you shouldn't have any issues. Hope this helps.

If he is running CM or MIUI, he would not need to change his browsers UA string.
When has the UA string ever been an issue on a custom/aftermarket ROM?

No Root Tethering ICS stock rom - go to settings, applications, on top list select All, find TetheringProvisioning and disable it.
free wifi tethering t-mobile sgh-t989 4.0.4 works
okay let me just start off by saying I did not figure this out by myself. someone put me on to this method about a year ago here on xda I'm sorry i can't remember the user name but if you know who you are thankyou. first of all you must be rooted for this method next download titanium backup open up titanium backup grant superuser permission if this is your first time using the application next click on the middle button back up/restore scroll almost all the way to the bottom find tethering provisions click on tethering provision if you have Titanium Backup Pro you will be able to backup this file and or freeze the file or completely uninstall the file next find wifi sharing manager also under backup/ restore once both of these files are either frozen or uninstalled reboot your phone and enjoy free wifi tethering
Try this ....

Ok. For those that ARE NOT running 4.1/4.2, The tethering provision has already been removed. The newest CM builds have a very difficult time using the Tether for Root users. Some people would like to say that all it takes is to change the device profile to Galaxy S2, but that doesn't work. And the OP said he is running stock, no root. Not many apps, if any, will work with his device on 4.0.4. Might have to downgrade to GB. That was the last time WIFI Tether for Root users worked for me.

i've been using infamous resurrection 2.0 and hot spot works just fine. this ROM is pretty much like the stock one with few modifications. Other folks talk about other ROMs; yes they do work well; but if you prefer something closer to stock like me, then infamous would be something to consider.

Thanks a lot for all of your info. i manged to root my phone with no problems and flashed my phone to aokp_hercules_jb-mr1_build-5.
This is my first time flashing a new rom on a phone and this one seems pretty stable. I have been using it for a couple weeks now and there hasn't been any problems yet. If i didn't know i would think this build shipped with the phone. google now works great, USB tether works, and mobile hotspot works with some trial and error. however, when my ipod and ipad both connect to mobile hotspot, they do nothing. I was trying to stream pandora and tunein from from the ipod through my car using hotspot but i guess it's just a problem with iOS devices as other phones and laptops connect fine.
This will work for now until either the real JB comes out or I buy a nexus or new galaxy device. thanks.

[Q]Free WIFi Tethering

I recently upgraded to the HTC M8 from a Note 2 in wish I had PDA.net instaled and worked great. But now I have the M8 and instaled PDA.net and it does not work. I keeps sucking data out of my tethering plan. Is there a way to fix this? or a way around the tethering plan?
I was thinking of rooting the phone as I had with my note but I am still not shure about it. Also I don't own a Windows OS system I have OSX.
Would be glad to see some answers.

not sure about getting the free tethering, but I rooted on OSX. You just need to use fastboot in terminal.

Mobile Hotspot

HI,
I'm coming from a Dev . Edition M9, where my mobile hotspot feature worked right out of the box, now to an HTC purchased 10.
I'm getting the error message to contact ATT or 611 to enable this feature. I've unlocked the bootloader on it and enabled the dev features so it's virtually the same as my M9, right?
Why will my M9 work perfectly and this won't? What do I have to do to get the mobile hotspot working on the 10? Do I have to root? I would prefer not rooting because it breaks certain apps (like TWC TV). Also, my previous M9 wasn't rooted, so not sure why I'd have to do so on this phone.
I have the ATT unlimited data plan, if that matters.
Thanks for your feedback.
were you on a custom rom before? mostly likely the hotspot was unlocked in a custom rom, why you didn't get the message before.
nvm, you said you were not rooted before
the new unlimited plan from att does not allow tethering I read. don't know if you have a old plan or not

I don't know if it's old, but it is a limited data plan that includes tethering. I switched to this plan about a year ago.
I don't know if both of us have the same plan, but I don't have tethering either. I haven't had it for a while. With my unlimited plan I was paying $20 for tethering, until they added the extra $20 just to have unlimited. It wasn't worth paying all that money a month.
What I'm trying to say is that free tethering (at least in my case) ended a while ago.

Mine works on AT&T. I dunno if the rep at the AT&T store did anything special when she set it up. I'm on one of the current shared plans that they're offering right now. Tethering is included at no extra cost.
Ok, I think what I need to point out, is that I do not have tethering service.
I guess I'm alluding to how do I enable my hotspot without having to add tethering like I did with Dev. Ed. M9?

There is a provisioning check and a few things going on. It's not a simple fix. We have to go in and change a few things to make it work.
I'll look at it in the future but can't say exactly when that will be.

Could we just change the build prop file to allow this for carriers like Sprint? Saw this on the Moto X Pure thread. I did this and it worked for me on the Pure.
1. Modifying system files could render your device useless, so by continuing you’re assuming that risk
2. Using a root file explorer, navigate to /system/
3. (Optional) Make a copy of the build.prop
4. Open the build.prop file with a text editor
5. Add the following line to the bottom of build.prop file: net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
6. Save the file and reboot your device
Yeah just noticing the tethering app does not work on my phone either and I'm on Straight Talk. Says there was an error and that I need to contact ATT. I thought that the unlocked versions of these phones didnt have the tethering app blocked....
I could fix it if my phone was rooted but I'm not sure I want to do that just yet.
Yea this sucks. I'm on a corporate account w/ unlimited data and tethering worked fine on my stock M9. Trying to avoid root so I can get OTA but may might the bullet

Hotspot fix temp
No root needed, no rom needed, no call to att or straight talk needed.. this is very complicated, so do at your own risk, this may fix your device!
1. Put the sim pin in the sim pinhole.
2. Push the pin in
3. Without removing the card, and not sliding the card completly out
4. Go to the hotspot and activate the hotspot @
5. Settings = more= moble network sharing ... it will activate to 'on' when you turn it on!
6. Now for the hard part, push the simcard tray back in.... working!
Dont forget to thanks!

1.53 enabling carrier tethering checks?

I have an Unlocked HTC 10 on AT&T unlimited without the mobile hotspot plan. Previously on 1.30, I was able to activate the mobile hotspot, and I believe the same was true for the 1.27(?) that the phone came with. Now, however, after updating to 1.53 using the image that Captain_Throwback posted, I get a prompt to contact AT&T to activate mobile hotspot on this device when I try to tether. Did HTC retroactively add checks?

Grandfathered unlimited, and I don't pay for the tethering add-on. It's idiotic they expect me to pay $20 to have the right to do what I want with my data.

Yes. I was thinking it's an integer and not boolean.
If the entitlement_check change (as well as other changes mentioned) doesn't appear to work you may need to edit it at a db level.
If this we're a branded ROM i'd say swap wifirouter.apk out but it's generic so that should be ok.
I haven't had to do this in a while. AT&T used to use 2 different IP gateways for normal data and tethering. I'll dig into when I get time but it used to be if you re-routed the tethering traffic to the data IP it would bypass tethering requirements. Also they specifically look for Internet Explorer UA string as a flag that you're tethering a PC. you could try with safari or mozilla to see if they detect you once you're testing.

Have they fixed VoLTE for ATT on LeeDroid?
Now that we know why it does/doesn't work on some handsets (and we can fix it). It would seem to be a deal breaker for an ATT user to lose VoLTE.

Not that I'm aware of. Leedroid is based off of UK roms therefore doesn't natively support it. From my understanding, volte provides HD voice should both sending and receiving phones as well as network supports it. Since it's still a relatively new technology, not everyone has the capability to utilize it. So its not a big deal for the time being.

Even though it's UK based they could put the provisioning xmls and .prop in there to make it work.
As for HDvoice and VoLTE that's a misconception. I've been testing calls to everyone, even my Google Voice on LTE. So far they all go through as VoLTE. The reason is cross carrier compatibility takes it outside the base network level.

Gotcha. I just might ask Lee if he can implement it in the next release. Either way, not a big deal right now as far as I'm concerned. I'm just happy to be able to have a modern phone that I can bootloader unlock, root and rom on AT&T after I made the mistake of signing a two year agreement for the galaxy s6 with the futile hopes of having bootloader unlock. [emoji31] I resurrected my M8 and continued to use it until now.

I had it enabled on my M7 euro sense7 .401. ROM by editing the XMLs and build.prop. I didn't have the proper SIM in my handset to actually provision but the phone tried real hard to make VoLTE calls.
It's something that should be added for the broadest userbase.
There was another thread like this and the solution was a bit more simple... Simply pop the sim card out, turn on mobile hot-spot. It will show as on. Then pop the sim card in. Once this is done the first time, no need to remove the sim the next time you need it.

There should be a rule to set to zero and also turn support tether guard to false.

Set the following (HTC 10, rooted, s-on, 1.53.617.5):
tethering_guard_support=false (default: true)
TetheringGuard_Rule=0 (default: 9)
Saved & rebooted. WiFi, USB and Bluetooth tethering now enable without the AT&T carrier message. Successfully tested USB and WiFi connectivity.

Did you add these lines to the build.prop? I don't see them in there. Could you please elaborate?
Thanks
