I'm from the Evo 4G section of xda and just bought an Epic 4G from a friend to play around with. I've rooted and fully customized my Evo 4G and my uncle's Samsung Infuse. So I am not new to the rooting side of these phones. However, I just can't seem to get this to work no matter how hard I try.
Ok so I have done Google searches and sifted through the various "fixes" here on xda....I cannot, no matter what I do, get my epic 4g to be recognized on my Windows 7 64 bit.
I've downloaded and installed about 3 or 4 different USB driver files. I've gone through 2 different cables. I've uninstalled and even updated drivers via Windows. And I've installed and updated Kies. I bought the phone from a friend of mine who had done a full system restore before he gave it to me. So if there were any system issues they should be gone. When I plug in one of the cables the phone shows that the USB cable is connected and I have USB debugging on. But my computer shows "Uknown Device." Does anyone have any suggestions for me please?
I've included screenshots of what my computer shows me. Any help, or reference literature that I may have overlooked, that you guys can provide would be extremely helpful.
There's a few reasons this could be happening. You may want to try different USB ports on your computer or connecting through a USB hub. Also, make sure you're using the official Samsung drivers (you can search for them on XDA).
Otherwise, go to the dialer on the phone and punch in ##8778# and under USB make sure PDA is checked instead of modem. Hope that helps.
I too could never get win7x64 to work but had no problem on other pc running win7x86. I wasted hours trying. Uninstalled everything, removed all references in registry, used usbdevview, device manager, different usb ports, win update, and on and on and on. Gave up since I had other computer and it just worked 1st try. Please pm me if u find the solution. Would still like it to work on 64 bit. My thought is the 64 bit driver, but I hear others are working. :-O

Mine works fine on my 64bit Laptop. I had to update drivers once though since going to GB leak broke it. On my desktop it will only work if connected in the rear USB port.

I've used atleast 3 different computers with 64 bit windows 7, I never did anything special except for download the drivers from samsungs website...
I don't know what it is because I couldn't get the computer to recognize my phone on my uncle's laptop (which runs Vista 32). It kept giving me the same "Unknown Device" message when I went to look at the drivers.

Where it says unknown device double click on that then go to update driver then browse to location of unzipped samsung drivers.

Welcome to the Epic 4g xda section! It just so happens I was looking for Windows 7 64-bit drivers earlier today.
Here's where I found them: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067
Then scroll down to the section "2.3 – ROOTING" and you'll find the listed drivers there.

That post and those drivers are old...
Go here and get the drivers from Samsung:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SPH-D700ZKASPR
AFAIK, that package should install the correct drivers for the OS.

I have literally the same problem, phone was reconized and connected fine when i was running xp 32 bit, installed windows 7 64 bit and nothing i do will work. Was your problem ever resolved?
All i can say is try extracting the drivers thru 7zip
then extract the files it gives you
then u should see like a folder and then copy and paste the
folder in the c: program files
and then go back to device manager and then actually manaually search for
drivers and that should work cuz it worked for me im using Windows 8
unfortunately that is one of the exact ways I tried to do it, thanks for the input tho. Just incase I over looked something searching for the driver manually, what sub category should my phone be under in device manager? thx
For those having trouble getting the drivers installed in Win7(x64/x86).
A workaround could be to use WUBI (Ubuntu's windows based installer that adds an option to boot to Ubuntu, while allowing it [Ubuntu] to be uninstalled from windows like a "normal" program).
Install WUBI, boot to Ubuntu, problem solved!
If the point of installing the drivers it to get Odin working...
The WUBI workaround would still work, you would just replace Odin with Heimdall (which is 100x better/more stable than Odin anyway).
I realise this is a lot to do for resolving a driver install problem, but... Heimdall pwns Odin anyway.

and if your in download mode when you hook your phone up
it will show up under modem it wil not show until you connect your phone
Ok I had to do the following inorder for it to work on my windows 7 x64 bit
I download the samsung epic 4g driver samsung_mobile_driver_v1.3.800.0.msi
I then used 7zip to extract the file
I then used the msi file and installed it
I then used 7 zip and extracted the samsung_mobile_driver_v1.3.800.0.msi file to a directory
I then DISABLE ALL INTERNET ACCESS ON THE LAPTOP BY TURNING OFF WIFI AND OR PULLING THE LAN CABLE OUT THE PC.
I then plug the phone into the pc usb slot
let the pc find the drivers
if it does not find them point to the extracted directory you did above and it will be good.
now do ##8778# and place the bottom into pda and if it cant find drivers point it to the extracted directory.
now turn phone off and go into download mode 1 key and power button and let windows find the drivers

Oh... my... god. I spent hours today trying to figure out how to get this phone I picked up to show me its sd card as a drive. Everyone on the internet seemed to be saying it was the lack of the right drivers, though they all disagreed on what the right drivers were. I tried so many different drivers, no luck.
That above, that I quoted: all it took. Why would it possibly be misconfigured out of the box in such a weird, impossible-to-locate way? Jeez.
(Anyway, I know I'm bumping a super old thread with this first post, but I felt compelled not just to thank this person for restoring my sanity, but also to bump up this thread's relevance for future googlers going as crazy as I was going.)
So I have done something to my epic, I don't know if it would count as bricked soft bricked or whatever but when I turn it on it bootloops on samsung logo but I can still enter download mode, So I figured I would flash a stock rom with odin and start over.
I went to this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
downloaded necessary drivers
installed and tried to connect to odin
I've tried every combination of powering the phone with the computer, then putting in download mode
I've tried powering on with battery booting into download mode opening odin selecting pit and tar and then pluging it in and nothing.
when the pc does recognize the phone it says device not recognized or device malfunctioned.
I saw a post somewhere with someone saying I needed to "advanced install" the drivers. So whatever that means I tried to uninstall the device from device manager while plugged in in download mode and updating the driver to the 64bit samsung usb driver and it says "unknown device already has best driver installed"
the computer I'm using is an HP DM1-4010us not that I think it would matter.
If anyone has anymore suggestions, or can suggest a method or pattern of step by step what I need to do
maybe install the drivers in a different compatibility mode?
what about odin compatibility?
System UAC is turned off and firewall is off too just in case it may be blocking odin from communicating with comm ports so I know that can't be the issue.
Thanks for listening to my overly detailed and confused ramblings and thanks in advance for any advice or help offered.

Try a different USB port and cable the stock cable sucks azz try a blackberry cable.
Have you tried a different usb port?
I have always used the cable that came with my epic, are you using it?
I'd at least open odin, put your phone into download mode and then connect it to the PC and see if with the stock cable it is recognized. That will tell you perhaps the cable you're using isn't connecting right for odin's use.
do you have any other cell phone drivers on your PC? I've seen where they conflict. Remove all cells phone drivers, reboot, install the epic drivers for win7 64bit

Heimdall fails to install drivers or detect the device, does this with AND without the samsung 64bit drivers installed.
Try downloading kies air to get drivers.

Make sure you downloaded the drivers named "Samsung_Mobile_Drivers_V1.3.8.." if not then that's the problem, if you need it I can email you the the file. Try all the usb cables in your house and all the computers as well, and take out sd card, I've also had this odin problem and I'm also sure it's your drivers since there are like 10 samsung drivers floating around lol.
Edit: nvm I downloaded the drivers from the thread you linked and they are correct.. try different cables, no battery no sd card, and different computers

I posted another thread with problems with odin and my ace 2. I uninstalled all the samsung driver's, I then reinstalled the samsung driver's and i get all these missing bluetooth driver's and 2 android driver's on my device manager. I can assume this is why odin is not working can anyone help please ? I have attached an image of my device manager. Also the samsung ADB interface driver only pops up when my device is plugged into my computer.
Thanks

I don't know about the bluetooth drivers but indeed Android adb driver should work. So here is what I suggest.
Go to the Samsung Android Phone tab, and uninstall these 2 drivers in there, restart laptop, then go and download the ace 2 drivers from here and see if it works, ah btw let the phone connected during the whole process.
Thanks for the advice i followed your advice, uninstalled both the samsung and ADB then restarted my computer. I then reinstalled the drivers you provided with my device plugged in, while they were installing. I got the bluetooth drivers popup again, Also theres a new thing under my portable devices tab i will post more screenshots this is really boggling me :/
Also this popped up when installing the drivers to do with the bluetooth.....
looks like MTP won't work either eh? Well let's see if it's the phone or the pc
Firstly follow those instuctions to do some troubleshooting.
1) Go to http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl....aspx?id=19153
3) Download the file
6) Run it
7) Follow the instuctions (NextNextNextNext)
That's it, now the MTP devices should work correctly.*
(ALSO Try de-selecting usb debugging)
If this won't work then I guess it's a problem with the phone.I read somewhere in a thread that some dude with the same problem on a samsung phone did factory wipe, wiped dalvik, and installed another ROM, then the usb drivers problem got fixed.
Good luck.
EDIT: Also check this site here it seems to have solution regarding the bluetooth peripheral thing.
none of those links work It has also stopped coming up as mtp it now just says GT-I8160. Also i noticed when i start up my computer it fails to start until i unplug it and plug it in again (attached pictures)
Also there is no android adb anymore its just the samsung one.... is this right? i appreciate your help
I am also using a 64bit version of windows 7 if that makes any difference.
Have you tried connecting the phone to some other pc just to know which one is the problem?
I've ran outta ideas...well the problem seems to be with the device itself and if not then it's probably the usb port, maybe insert to another port or try your luck on google, search for something like "windows failed to recognize android phone"or smth similar. I'll do some more research and try to help y'out tomorrow

I tried disabling usb debugging also i tried the drivers on my netbook. I am having really strange problems on there with odin i plug it in and odin wont pick it up and as soon as i unplug it it says added then removed very weird :/ thats only when the phone is in download mode....
Im thinking its either the cable or the phone. Im not sure though..
Remove all Samsung related drivers.
Restart pc
Use cccleaner to clean the registry
Reboot pc
Use the drivers that i have provided in the s advance forum in my all in one guide. Install the drivers without connecting the phone.
After the drivers are installed, turn off internet connection and then connect the phone.

Thanks for the new idea shaaan I have succesfully followed steps 1 and 2. But I am struggling to find your all in one guide would one be kind to link me ? I did a forum search with no luck. Also I am using a galaxy GT-I8160 would using the s drivers matter? and thanks for the help mojito0 I would like to think it isn't the cable or phone, as I have literaly owned them for 8 days (just over a week). I can always see if i can borrow another cable of my friend today though
edit: I found your all in one guide I am now going to attempt what you said
After removing all the samsung related drivers and restarting I get all these devices come up? The device is not plugged in either.
I dont know if this helps atall, but I finished doing what you said ignoring the drivers.... Then went to flash using odin, Put the phone into download mode and noticed that after a couple of seconds of being stuck on setup connection. It then says the GT-I8160 cannot start, Also the mtp and adb android driver is still displaying that yellow explanation mark :/ I am a newbie to android here and dont know the difference betwene the samsung adb and the android one as listed do they both need to be working?
Remove all the displayed devices from other devices, also remove that Samsung adb thingy and also there will be one Samsung related device in the usb section! Remove them all and then follow my steps.
As for your driver query, the drivers are universal for a specific range of devices. The driver version 2.0+ should work for all devices which were released in 2012

Guys I'm trying to root with the cubed root but when I go into download mode and open command prompt to identify the com ports I get an error not recognizing the ports should I download another version of the tool used to do it or is something wrong with the device???
I have spent litterally all day trying to update my mrs g3 d855 and i have had no luck, how much of it because my computer i dont know. Im running a chromebook with a full linux distro gallumos installed, got virtual box running 32 bit windows 7. Android sdk, adb etc and got lg drivers installed to recognise the device in its various states, ptp, mtp, download. all that is working. got the official lg mobile support tool and the lg 2014 flash tool.
the problem im having is neither of these will update the phone, if i try to manaully flash the kdz using the flashtool or updating using the official one, it wont update recover either. if i try different region or enter the imei number it always fails at 4%. Iv tried different usb cables, different ports, the phone was at 100% battery the whole time, the laptop was on charge the whole time. I really dont know what else to do, i have no access to another windows machine here and its the mrs phone and she wouldnt want me to take it to work to try on another pc there. As i said earlier the drivers all seem installed correctly, the firmware downloads and extracts as it should but I really am at the point i dont know what else to try
Hello,
Did you try LGUP method? Link is here.
It's easy to use. All you need is there, try it and reply
Just TIP: Do you really have correct drivers for download mode? If LGUP see you device as "unknown", change your COM port to #41
Do "FULL WIPE AND INSTALL MM"
I think I might of, how ever before work I did download a version of lg up and some kind of other installer for it. I also got a kdz file to try and flash. The drivers should all be fine, it gets recognised in all the various modes. My fiance is on nights this week, the soonest il be able to try again is tomorrow so I will let you know it goes. Thank you for replying

Thanks buddy il let you know after I can try it again. If it was a Nexus it would be fine, I know all about fastboot, unlocking bootloaders and rooting and stuff for the Nexus line. So much easier to work with
So I think I might know where I'm going wrong, i thought I had all the drivers set up but there's one I missed, for download mode
Under device manager I see when the phone is turned on with adb on
Android device- lge mobile adb interface-google Inc 4.0.0.0-working properly
Portable devices-g3-lg electronics 4.0.0.0-working properly
Ports (com & lot)-lg mobile USB serial port (com 4)-lg electronics 4.0.0.0-working properly
In download mode device manager
android device isn't there, no adb which is fair enough
Portable devices-g3 with yellow warning triangle-lg electronics 4.0.0.0- the device cannot start code 10
Ports (com & lot)-lg mobile USB serial port (com 4)-lg electronics 4.0.0.0-working properly
So I need to trouble shoot why the device cannot start. I have downloaded 2 packs of Lg drivers, lg united mobile driver & lg mobile driver. Both of which contain loads of drivers inside.
If I guide windows into either of the folders it won't install any new drivers giving an error saying that the driver software is already up to date.
I'm going to Google to find out what's going on with device cannot start error, if I'm missing something obvious please jump in
Can you please post complete screenshot with windows device manager (with open ports menu) and adb console with command "adb devices" ?
In your chromebook, do you have disabled all USB power saving bull****s? Also check VM software to see if there is such a possibility to enable/disable USB power plans.
At least, sorry for my bad english Still a lot of things to learn.
Your English is fine I understand perfectly, in fact I wouldn't of guessed it's not your native language so don't worry! Iv taken photos of my screen. You will see when the phone is turned on normally the host and client can both see the device and adb shows the device is detected and returns the serial number, all good there. The last photos shows when it's in download mode and that the driver isn't working properly, it can not start the device with a code 10 error. If I can fix that I know the lgup programming will run. The problem is because the PC can't communicate with the PC in download mode because of some driver issue.
I'm going to have to carry on tomorrow as I have to go to work and the Mrs needs her phone here while she sleeps

Please, enter download mode and change in Windows COM port from #3 to #41 and try LGUP method . It's up to you what method (upgrade, full wipe) you choose.
OK sounds straight forward enough. As I say il have to try tomorrow as I'm at work now and left the Mrs with her phone at home asleep, she will be working night shift so it will have to be when she is back home. I really appreciate the help and il post again to update how I get on
Where I am now is no further, iv tried changing the port to 41 through device manager. Iv set the port 0041 in virtual box for USB settings. Iv tried several sets of drivers. What keeps happening no matter which set of drivers I use when the phone goes into download mode mtp stops working and stops the phone communicating with the PC. When I restart it will work normally for a while but go wrong again. If I try lg up and starting the upgrade in download mode it gives me an error saying it can't change to download mode if I choose refurbish or upgrade. Lg PC suite just hangs at 0% and returns an error after a while. The 2014 flash tool will get as far as trying to flash but hangs at 4% and returns an error but doesn't specify what. I really don't know what else I can do. When these programs reboot the device into download mode it disconnects the device from the virtual machine and I can't get it connected again quick enough before errors are returned or mtp stops working which requires me to reboot the VM or phone. The only thing I can think to do is try on another machine. If it was my phone I would of thrown it out the window or under a bus. Lg software is unusable through virtual machines and I am not buying a new PC just for this lol Il see if I can use someone else's. I hate being defeated, iv have spent probably some 16 hours and got no where! Why can't they just release an ota? It only strengthens my belief in nexus and fastboot. Sorry for the rant but this really has got under my skin and I don't like giving in
Edit
I'm just as annoyed with windows as lg at this point. I really don't like using it. Grrrr
