Crazy screen behaviour with Magnetic Charger attached - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all, I've always had this problem when using a magnetic charger on my Z1c (cheap eBay plug adapter that goes on the end of a normal USB cable) where the screen goes crazy flipping landscape/portrait, opening apps, closing apps ... like it's possessed by a ghost!
When I lock the screen it stops (I assume...).
Anyone else got this problem? I am also using a glass screen protector if that makes any difference.
I also heard over a year ago that when using a magnetic charger attachment it somehow has a leaking/residual electrical charge that transmits across the screen causing random activations ... dunno how this could be at all possible though, lack of science. Or it could be the fact I'm using a cheap eBay product with zero safety/quality control....
Cheers.

Incipio case.... charging

At first I thought that the loose charger was due to using an older charger I had laying around. However, trying it on my car charger, I realized it's due to the case.
Anyone else having this issue (where the charger needs to be "wiggled" around to get a solid connection)? If I take the case off, there's no problem.
Debating on performing a little surgery to open up the charging area with a razor blade.
Not having this problem at all

i have the silicrylic and i've had no trouble with the micro-usb connection. not sure why the case would be causing that problem.
No issues here with my charging either on a Silicrylic case. Its actually my favorite case ive tried so far!!
Could be the USB cable itself. Are you using the one that came with the phone or another one? I had this problem with my GS2 which was due to the cable end (not the connectore) being a different shape/thickness (Logitech MX Mouse charging cable).
Using the silicrylic as well and having no issues at all.

Wireless Charging Woes

Ok, so im using the Spigen Neo Hybrid case, and when i use wireless charging, it may work 30 seconds, or 10 minutes, but it always stops. What happens is i place it on the charger and it indicates its charging. Then, within a short time period, the light on the charger starts flashing to indicate charging isnt working properly, and the screen comes on and says wireless charging paused.
I have 3 different Samsung chargers, a Nokia charger and several Powerbot chargers. One of the Samsung chargers is the newest (not fast) chargers. I take the case off and it seems to be fine. Anyone familiar with this case knows its not thick by any means. Also, i have 2 GS6s in the house both using Neo Hybrids and they charge just fine. Ive adjusted positioning dozens of times but i know from experience that most devices dont require an EXACT placement.
I went to Best Buy, where i purchased it, and this is where it gets odd. They placed it on their display charger in the Samsung section and it charged for 10 minutes no problem before they told me they couldnt duplicate the issue so they wont replace it. I brought it home and the damn thing charged to full charge no issue. The next day when i placed it back on the charging pad, it starts cutting out again.
All my chargers have been tried over USB, and yes, with multiple wall plugs. My first thought was not enough power over USB but clearly thats not the case.
Any ideas from anyone would be great.
I don't have the issue with the old wireless chargers it seems. I think it is just the new ones that were given out that I have the issue with.

I've finally fixed my issue with the original samsung charger and generic from ebay, I turned on day dream and it works now without disconnection.
A lot of people are having the same problem and so was I.
Grab your phones charger and base and use that.
I think the long cord that comes with the wireless charger is causing the issue.
I'm using an old knock off wireless charger and no case yet, but it seems to be working fine. Once the defender case comes in, we'll see if it is still functional
I haven't had any issues with my Samsung wireless charger. I'm using the original hardware that came with it. I'm also using the Neo hybrid case. What is your model number? Mine is EP-PG920A. When I was at best buy they said they had two different versions of the wireless charger. Unfortunately bestbuy was sold out so I bought mine at ATT. And I don't have daydream enabled.

Weird sensation/feedback from the metal while dash charging? Anyone else?

So if my phone is Dash charging, I sometimes get a tingling sensation if I touch the metal of the phone. Almost like a low level electric shock/pins and needles type feeling. If it starts to happen, I can make it stop by disconnecting the USB cable from the phone...
I know it sounds a bit crazy, but has anyone else experienced or noticed this?
No, not for me
No, definitely not. And to be honest, I think u should get a replacement!
I experience that too, even with normal chargers, and I measured 0.5V Ac from the phone Metal to the protective. Not sure why I measure Ac voltage because the phone charges with DC current.
If I get free time I will investigate it with an oscilloscope at the university.
No I haven't. I'd be concerned and would at least contact OnePlus.
I get the same feeling with my aluminium laptop. You see, most appliances with metal cases require grounding. It is done with the 3rd pin of your power connector (pin, hole, schucko on the sides, whatever). Phone chargers and many new laptop chargers don't have that. The designers decided that the static electricity problem would bother people less than having a big wall plug.
Plug your charger to the wall the other way (turn it 180 degrees), sometimes it helps (depends on charger design for your country).
Yup, the adapter needs to go in the right way.

Got the same sensation ! (happy to see other people with the same)
But not only during charging, when I handle it with one hand (and when it is set "screen against the ground" and that I touch it) I also feel this thing. Should I talk to OnePlus? Then replacement ?
Yeah ditto same. I thought it was the vibration motor being loose or being triggered unintentionally when charging.

Even I have the same problem.
i also got this tingling feeling while charging but i think it Is normal because i get such feeling with other metal phones too
Same here
Thats fue to a faulty ground connection on you home electric system. Happens on old houses or on poorly made wall sockets. Happened to me on other devices and was my wall socket missing ground connection.

Thanks everyone, it seems benign so I won't worry about it anymore. It's my first time with a metal uni body phone! I'm in the UK so the charger should be grounded by the three pin plug. The house is old so maybe the electrics aren't fantastic...
could be your power wiring. maybe some induction current. thats why im using an extension cord with a build in fuse / filter
Nope not from me

Do we need replacement? Or it is fine?
Yes. It has to do something with grounding I guess. I had the same issue. I posted it above. Tried reversing the pins and charging and the same. It doesn't have a third plug for grounding tho (Indian Norm). I was using a 3 Pin extension but still experiencing the same. Need to contact Oneplus now I guess? It doesn't effect when you have a rubber cover on. But I am afraid it will ruin my phone or something or what. Idk lol

Will the wireless charger work if the phone lies on its front?

Hi guys,
I'm using Spigen's magnetic car holder (a metal plate under the case) and because of this wireless charging won't work in its regular way.
I wonder if it will work on the upside down phone, i.e. phone lies on the screen. (QI standard says it should: up to 1.6 inches is the range).
Could someone try please? If yes, is the speed normal and the phone ok?
Please write a charger model in your replies.
Cheers
No the phone wont charge facedown.

Just tested it and no. It doesn't work.
Kind of defeats the purpose of wireless charging to having it face down. Only scenario I can see you'd do that is if you're sleeping and it was on the table next to the bed and you didn't want the light from the screen to bother you.
Makes perfect sense if you have a stick-on handle

Question Unusual sensation when phone is charging

Many of you will think this is bonkers at first read, but I want to know if anyone else is experiencing this as well.
Scenario:
Take off any covers or cases you have in your phone. Make sure all the protective shrink wrap around the phone is removed.
Plug the phone to the charger like you normally would.
With a single finger, gently run it along the sides of they phone (on the casing, not the screen). Run it from the top to bottom. Either side of the phone.
Does anyone feel a weird buzzing feeling on their finger ?
Remove the charging cable and try out again. No buzzing feeling.
My Redmi Note 4 has this issue. I don't know what it is but it feels like small vibration.
Yes, I've felt this for years on different devices with a metal body. Weird isn't it! I've never looked into it.
What country are you in? This is a grounding issue I've experienced charging phones when overseas.
Australia here

220v countries. Voltage leak to the casing. I got this when converting to 110v. 1+ phone in my case
Mine seems to be fine. I don't get any vibrations on metal frame on my fold 3.
Your charger has a grounding issue. Many years ago the same thing happened to my iPhone 6 when I used a cheap USB charger. When it’s plugged in I can feel a weird tingling if I run my finger up and down the sides of the phone, and the fingerprint sensor in the home button stops working when plugged in. The issue disappear if I plug it into a different charger.
I don’t think poor grounding will damage your phone or injure you, but if you can afford to I would replace the charger just in case.
The chargers are not grounded so it's not a grounding issue. Rather, the EMI suppression capacitors in the power supply (charger) are designed to couple to the line wires. The sensation comes from 220V/50Hz being capacitively fed into the USB ground, but the current is only a few microamps.
There's no easy solution to this but:
- ignore it
- try various chargers
- ground the USB ground to the earth ground
- take apart the PSU and try different capacitors or remove them.
In the US, and I have this tingle when its charging and stroking the spine with my finger. Our plugs have no ground. They are polorized but don't have a third pin. So not sure grounds are at issue.
It is similar to the feeling from one of those lightning globes, but a bit more intense. I was thinking it is some charged particles that leak through the spines plastic. It is an interesting feeling not really unpleasant. Would think it's harmless but it is interesting.
I tried EVERY SINGLE CHARGE I have and found 2 "cheap" ones that had this issue. I tossed them and all of my genuine Samsung ones were fine. As well as the other ones that came from various phones that were not knockoffs.
I always feel it on every phones and laptops with aluminium even with their respective official chargers.
Totally normal. if I have both my laptop and phone charging and touching them at the same time then this happens, but it can be negated by switching the figure of eight plug on the laptop charger to match the phase of the usb charger
I believe it might also be due to the Neutral and Live wires being reversed either in the charger or at the wall socket.
