Sparks when connecting charger - Huawei Watch

today i noticed some sparks while trying to get the charger in place. is this something to worry about? What is the best way to get the charger in place?
Sent from my SM-T320 using Tapatalk

That doesn't sound right. May want to consider a warranty replacement...

Unless you were purposefully keeping the watch from making a connection sounds like a bad charger

I did it in a dark room just to see...no sparks. Low voltages rarely spark.

This is easily achieved if you miss the charging pads on the watch and the pins on the charging puck hit the stainless portion of the back case.
It's a relatively low voltage short though, and I'm assuming they've built protection into the charger itself if it's left this way for extended periods.

[TROUBLE] Getting electrical shocks from docking contacts

Im getting small electrical shocks through the docking connectors. Not enough to hurt, but sure enough to wake me up
Happens only when cable is connected.
Anyone else noticed this? Could it be erroneus circuits? If so I will return my device.
This has to be a joke...
also, why are you playing with the contacts?
i heard its best to stick paper clips in it

The docking connectors are on the side of the device; it's more unlikely that you WOULDN'T come in contact with them through normal handling.
Nope, plugged in and not getting shocked. See if you're grounded
Not me. Tried it while plugged in to AC power, even made my fingertip a bit moist for better conductivity: nothing.
If you're not joking I would definitely get a replacement unit.
Im definetely not joking.
First I thought my phone was vibrating, but I have been able to repeat it. Feels kinda like getting a spark from a disassembled lighter. Im not sure but it takes some time between each spark. Makes me think it might be static electricity built up somewhere, maybe from me and then discharged through the connectors?

Maybe. If it's static it will be gone after discharge, and would need to build up again before you would feel another shock.
This might be related.
I just plugged in my phone and I must've been touching the pogo pins, it said "starting navigation" or something like that, but didn't start any app.
This has actually happened to me on several occasions and only while plugged in. Did you return your phone? Figure out why it happens?
I had that experience too: I was shocked when I just found out that Im getting shocked by my Galaxy Nexus.
Touching the dock connectors while the device is plugged in delivers a decent, constant current flowing through my finger. Very well noticeable, and on the edge of being painful for me.
You need a humidifier in your home or room or cave or wherever you reside. The low voltage (5V) and low current shouldn't shock you.
Sitting on the Australian East Coast, we have 99% humidity right now.
Playing around and intentionally touching the connectors for a few times now provided me with some more serious shocks (getting close to the pain level of licking a 9V block).
Enough for me to cover the ports with some clear tape for now..
in the us, with my verizon gnex, i can read ~7-8 vac from pogo->ground with the stock usb cable & ac adapter. so you can get a tiny amount of potential, but there is no large current. unplugging the phone i realized the voltage is coming from the shield on the usb cable, so its the charger, and not the phone with the issue (if it even is one)
BUT, this is way better than the 35vac i can read on a similar style iphone charger (one new, one old)(& same gnex stock usb connector shield measurement)...needless to say i'm not using that charger again on my gnex

Official Nexus 5 Wireless Charger, First Impressions.

I had the tilted wireless charger already (link bellow) but decided to get the official wireless charger as well.

Of course its a lot better made then the Chinese charger but is it better in usability and charging speed?
With the Chinese charger I was using the stock nexus charger and cable because they are much better then the cables that came with the charger, more detail in the link bellow
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50254993&postcount=116
The info you need to know is that the OEM nexus charger and cable put out about 1000-1100mA while the same cable paired with a samsung 2a block was able to push past 1600mA but not keep it there, leveling out at 1200mA. The OEM block and cable with Chinese charger puts out between 650mA and 730mA
So how does the official Nexus charger compare?
Well to start I tested the new cable with the OEM block and it was putting out just over 1100mA, so we know the cable is better then the OEM cable. Then I tested the new cable with the block that comes with it and got a steady 1600mA and it didnt drop. Now the block itself doesn't say anything on it as to what it puts out, but the charger base says 1.8a, is that what the block puts out? Regardless the block is much better then the Samsung 2a block.
I don't use a case so the phone on the charger itself puts out only a little bit more then Chinese charger keeping a steady 768mA. Now it can drop below and above that number but it really likes 768mA. So while it does have a great cable and block, if all you care about is speed then charger itself is a little faster but not by much compared to the Chinese charger.
As far as usability, I cant get the nexus charger to miss. I can throw it on and it connects every time. With the Chinese one it didn't always connect and i had to make sure i got it in the right spot and make sure, even if I heard the noise, that it didn't disconnect and was actually charging. With the nexus charger I feel confident that the magnets are lining it up and it gets a good connection every time.
As and added bonus, I have heard a lot about how you could possibly charge while vertical attached to a wall. I decided to try this and I can attest that the weak link will be the charger holding the wall not the charger holding the phone, as long as you don't use a case like me. The magnets are more then strong enough to hold the phone vertically, in fact they are more then strong enough to hold it upside down, I tried! The pad that sticks to the surface is just as strong as I've been hearing as well. I literately just slapped it on the wall and then threw the phone up and its holding thus far. I have it only a few inches above my night stand and will update if it falls, but so far it has held up to me taking the phone off and on about 50 times with no issue. I'm not sure how it would hold up as a car mount, only because I don't know how the sticky part of the base would hold up to extreme hot and cold. I image it would probably fall, especially if completely vertical.
I would definitely recommend the Nexus charger over a Chinese one. I you have the $50 then its a no brainier, it was even a couple bucks cheaper then that on amazon and my prime membership got it here on Monday when i ordered on Saturday afternoon. If you only have $13 bucks and don't mind waiting 3 or more weeks then Chinese one charges almost as fast.
I too finally went from the orb to the new charger because I wanted a vertical mount. I'm blind as a bat with my contacts out and wanted to be able to see the time on my phone while in bed. With the orb, the angle was bad and my nightstand is taller than my mattress, making it hard to see. So I got the new charger, put it on the side of my nightstand and it's holding just fine. Holds the phone great too and now I can see the time on my phone. As long as you can get a smooth, flat surface, I don't see why mounting vertically would be an issue.

just wanted to say, it did end up falling off the wall the 2nd night while charging, the charger from the wall, not the phone from the charger. A good sized piece of 3m double sided tape right in the middle of the charger fixed that and I've had no problems since.
Charger in use
Can you advise please if the Google charger cuts out once the phone has reached 100% or does it change to a trickle charge? Looking at some of the alternatives (e.g. on Amazon) I haven't found any that automatically cut out at 100% although a few mention about changing to a trickle charge. What's your experience in this regard?

Have you considered using this charger in the car? From what you're saying, the hold issue seems to be the charger itself. Using double sided 3m thick tape may solve the issue.
The reason I'm curious is because I and many other previous Palm Pre users used to use the touchstone wireless charger in their cars and the phone never fell of even on extreme bumps. It was great being able to simply place the Pre on the charger and if you were lucky you could put the touchstone right in your line of sight (I have an 06 civic so the touchstone fit right next to the steering wheel, to the right. Look at my profile pic or do a search for palm Pre wireless charging in the car and you'll come up with hundreds of results and pics).
Do you think the charger's internal magnets would be strong enough to hold the nexus 5 in place while driving? Right now, I still use the touchstone as a place holder for my 5 as the internal metal discs on the 5 line up nicely with the internal magnets in the touchstone. I did modify the touchstone slightly and added magnets every 90° starting at the 45° position and then the other 3 were 90°apart from the initial magnet. I'll try to post a pic or a video of what I mean. The touchstone is not a qi charger so it doesn't charge but it certainly makes for a super convenient spot for the phone to be especially when using navigation. Also the nexus has not fallen once while driving over some pretty harsh bumps.
What do you think?

Been using the official Qi charger in the car daily, with this set up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...es/kenu-airframe-n5-wireless-charger-t2573184. Perfect solution.

Qi wireless charger

Hi,
I recently bought a qi wireless charger because my charger port of the phone broke and it's too expensive to fix.
Anyways, yesterday I left it for 2 hours the % went from 49 to 90 which I was quite happy with but I let it charge over night and it only went from 34% to 50%.
I am rooted and on AOSP.
I check the wireless current and sometimes as soon as I put it on the pad it's 1000ma but then it keeps dropping quick to 100ma. The pad as an output of 1000ma.
Csn someone tell me how to fix the slow charge. Thanks

you're probalby not lining it up properly. that happens when you've misaligned the pad to the charger. find the sweet spot and just remember to place your phone there the same way.
if you're handy, you can probably also come up with a cradle of some sort so the phone falls right in place everytime.

I placed mini rare earth magnets under the phone's back plate, just 2 on the top area, and then 2 on the Qi wireless charger so the phone aligns perfectly with the charger, and gets the best charge it can get.. Also I opened up all my Qi Chargers and used my Dremel to remove all the extra plastic, as much as I could to remove any kind of resistance or space between the Tx Coil and the Rx Coil.. I tested the best place they could be aligned with a Multi Meter, and then added magnets.. Works like a charm.. Its a pain in the ass, but mine works out pretty well. I didn't place the magnets on the inside, I placed them on the outside of the charger.. Works well

thats what I purchased..
uh wow... that's seriously overkill but sure.. you can do that..
although i wonder if putting magnets that strong in your phone will mess with your gps and magnetometer.
i would say a small plastic cradle or creating little edges on the transmitter so the phone just physically falls in would be an easier and safer alternative that using a dremel on your receiver.

I would of thought the same thing, but it has given me zero problems when the magnets are set up top.. HOWEVER, when I tried to place 2 near the bottom, it caused all kinds of problems with USB charging and my phone locked up a few times... I'm glad the damage wasn't permanent.. I used my Hotglue gun to hold them into place, the magnetic field caused a short in the Gluegun and it EXPLODED in my hand.. I was lucky enough to drop it right when I heard the sizzle and BANG.. So when playing with strong magnets.. Be careful.
Edit: I also have an external case with the same type magnets, and even with the case on, it doesn't give me any issues, at least any I'm aware of.. I made a magnetic mount on my desktop pc, just for kicks.. But since the case is metal, I can't put a Qi charging coil on it.. Now that would be neat..
yeah.. that's dangerous in general. I honestly would not recommend anyone to do what you did considering you almost ended up with stuff blowing up un your hands.

The idea behind Qi is simple: all devices with the Qi logo will work with all Qi chargers. That’s it. No need for separate chargers, no need for cables, and no need for adapters when traveling. Qi is a global standard – this means that your device can be charged wirelessly wherever you are.

Qi-Charger Mod

This weekend, I did a well deserved 2015 Upgrade to my Galaxy Nexus, by making it compatible with Qi charging stations.
Showcase: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbaimVOVAic
First thing I did, was take the phone apart. It's very easy and nearly impossible to do wrong. All you need to do is take out battery and sim card along with all the screws behind the cover. Then use a guitar pick or something similar to loose the clips around the screen: Start with the clip on the left, right below the volume keys, next the one above the speaker/frontfacing camera and the last two are located below the power button. This video shows how to do just that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIAM5pxdUiM
Afterwards, i drilled two holes with a 1mm drukk through two of the three contact plates, put small cables through said holes from the other side and soldered them to the contacts. It had to be as thin as possible, as the contacts make contact with the main board with tiny springs, that don't have a lot of give.
The three contacts are in the following order:
Left = +5V
Middle = [rumor]Samsung Fast Charge regulation[/rumor]
Right = Ground
After that was done, I use small metal strips (~0.5mm thick), shortened the cables and soldered them to these strips. Afterwards, I put the phone back together and fixed the position of the contacts according to the position the contacts of the Qi were in.
I had to scratch off some of the notches on the backplate, as these were in the way, due to the cables I had to route along the left side. Finally, I fixated the Qi module with some doublesided tape to the backplate and voilá, it was finished.
This cost me like 5 bucks for the noname aftermarket Qi module (charging station not included) and a few hours to get it all done!
If you got questions, feel free to ask (post, not pm pls!). Any kind of feedback is also welcomed!
Nice work! I added one of the USB qi coil addons and I found it got very hot when charging. I was worried it'd heat the battery up and shorten the life of it....

yeah, im experiencing a similar issue. Looking at the current the qi station consumes, my module doesnt seem to throttle at all (via usb, it starts at 1A and, starting at around 85% charge, it slowly drops to 0A).
The Qi module should communicate with the station and signal the charge rate and subsequently full charge status (= no more charging). nada. I ordered another module by another manufacturer to see if it makes any difference. though, I suspect the GN just isnt fit for Qi, no matter what
P.S. The temps of the battery quickly go up to 45°C. When using normal usb charging, 40°C is already pretty rare. However most of the heat is not produced by charging the battery itself, but by the coil transferring the temperature. the backside of the battery remains a cool 30°C, even after charging for a long time using Qi.
Did you solve the high temperature problem? I was thinking of a similar mod but also got high temps with an external USB plug-in receiver module.
Great! I wanted to do something like that, bought the Qi unit, and a platform for charging, but before soldering checked both charges, and I did not like the fact that you need to put the phone just to the point that he began to be charged

Weird sensation/feedback from the metal while dash charging? Anyone else?

So if my phone is Dash charging, I sometimes get a tingling sensation if I touch the metal of the phone. Almost like a low level electric shock/pins and needles type feeling. If it starts to happen, I can make it stop by disconnecting the USB cable from the phone...
I know it sounds a bit crazy, but has anyone else experienced or noticed this?
No, not for me
No, definitely not. And to be honest, I think u should get a replacement!
I experience that too, even with normal chargers, and I measured 0.5V Ac from the phone Metal to the protective. Not sure why I measure Ac voltage because the phone charges with DC current.
If I get free time I will investigate it with an oscilloscope at the university.
No I haven't. I'd be concerned and would at least contact OnePlus.
I get the same feeling with my aluminium laptop. You see, most appliances with metal cases require grounding. It is done with the 3rd pin of your power connector (pin, hole, schucko on the sides, whatever). Phone chargers and many new laptop chargers don't have that. The designers decided that the static electricity problem would bother people less than having a big wall plug.
Plug your charger to the wall the other way (turn it 180 degrees), sometimes it helps (depends on charger design for your country).
Yup, the adapter needs to go in the right way.

Got the same sensation ! (happy to see other people with the same)
But not only during charging, when I handle it with one hand (and when it is set "screen against the ground" and that I touch it) I also feel this thing. Should I talk to OnePlus? Then replacement ?
Yeah ditto same. I thought it was the vibration motor being loose or being triggered unintentionally when charging.

Thats fue to a faulty ground connection on you home electric system. Happens on old houses or on poorly made wall sockets. Happened to me on other devices and was my wall socket missing ground connection.

Thanks everyone, it seems benign so I won't worry about it anymore. It's my first time with a metal uni body phone! I'm in the UK so the charger should be grounded by the three pin plug. The house is old so maybe the electrics aren't fantastic...
could be your power wiring. maybe some induction current. thats why im using an extension cord with a build in fuse / filter
Nope not from me

Do we need replacement? Or it is fine?
Yes. It has to do something with grounding I guess. I had the same issue. I posted it above. Tried reversing the pins and charging and the same. It doesn't have a third plug for grounding tho (Indian Norm). I was using a 3 Pin extension but still experiencing the same. Need to contact Oneplus now I guess? It doesn't effect when you have a rubber cover on. But I am afraid it will ruin my phone or something or what. Idk lol
