Im thinking if the note 2 can be able to read a 500GB HD?
It can.
Though bear in mind non rooted ones can't read ntfs. Only fat32 and exfat.
Also the disk may need external power source

try to use powered usb hub
like this : http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-4-Port-Cable-Power-Supply/dp/B00004Z6KW
its for 14 bucks
If it's a 2.5" bus powered hdd, it will work fine. Have you tried to connect it? As mentioned above you would also need to have it formatted as Fat32 otherwise the SGN2 will not be able to read the data.

this mean i need to root my phone first?
Fat32 and exFat disks are natively supported so no root required.
Ntfs requires an app like pandora which needs root.
Also, the phone may not be able to power hdds on its own. So the hdds needs is own power source or you can use a powered usb hub

I've tried a neso/Hitachi 500gb and a WD 1tb 2.5" with an OTG USB lead and my note 2 will read neither, yet my sgs3 reads both.
The neso is probably fat32 and the wd has been formatted with a mac to exfat.
Coincidentally, when using an Arcam rwave to an rcube dock the note 2 plays faultlessly yet the sgs3 "pops" during playback.
Both are UK devices running 4.1.1
Very strange indeed.
If you need 500 gb you have two options: external usb powered hub (I do own a belkin one...very small and working perfect) or external powered hdd. I suggest an 2.5 ssd & external 2.5 rack which works flawless without the need of external power. You loose some space capacity but you gain extra speed .

I have got a couple of 2.5" HDDs, which i expected to work via OTG, but no avail(not recognized anywhere, even with tools like stickmount). If at all any of you have been succesful, please post the brand, capacity, filesystem etc.
Have you tried regular micro SD cards or just external?
I've only tried it on one of my usbs this is just a normal 32 gig SD
Idk if this helps or not

hes talking about HDD as in 2.5 or 3.5" platter based spinning HDs. pretty much everything being pulled in storage wise for OTG is flash based as it requires WAY less energy to power as opposed to external spinning based ones. i probably just throw it out there thats theres not enough juice to run the spinning HD.
Has anyone been able to get your M7 to charge via a "Y" USB OTG cable? I have tested the one that I have other devices and they the power from the input. IE i plug up the "Y" cable to to Nokia 6350 and it charges fine.
Any suggestions?
I have been trying OTG with an external SSD to no avail. I have plenty of thumb drives. Its more of a see if i can get it to work mission
I believe the issue is kernel related. Haven't found that special custom kernel
A conventional hard drive will not work. I don't believe an SSD will work either. These simply use too much power. Just buy a 64-128 gig flash drive, which should be plenty.
Or, buy cloud storage (which can actually get expensive).
The y cable idea sounds REALLY interesting. DIY anyone?

Yeah I tried a 2.5" drive and no go. Drive kept trying to spin up. Flash dongles work fine. But I have had not success reading NTSF formatted drives. FAT32 and ExFAT no problemo.
thanks for the replies..a mouse i plugged in worked perfectly, flash drives work. FYI the NTFS issue can be overcome by rooting and using something similar to stickmount.Seems to be a power issue, maybe limited by the kernel..hopefully there is a way around this

You need a USB Y-cable and an external battery to make it work. But with that, it works fine.
Ive managed to get my M8 to read my external drive. one of them it can power the other it cant
HTC One support 64 gb usb otg not more than that
Not tested 128 gb flash drive
How do i use a usb otg cable with a flash drive to listen to music or watch movies? Can you do this?
OTG storage was confirmed to work on another thread. I haven't tested it out with my cable, but you may need Stickmount or similar (if so, you will need root). You will also need a third party player to play other media.
Another possibility is to create a "file bridge" or similar to make the stock player see the media on the external storage. This was a little difficult to do at first on 4.2 with the introduction of multi-user, but someone may have found a way around it. Something to research.

A regular USB flash drive should need no additional power, I have yet to find one that can't be used with the OTG cable due to power requirements.

Well, I tried Nexus Media Importer without root and it didn't work for me. If you follow NMI troubleshooting links you will find that the author has found that it is very problematic with Android 4.3. He claims he has found a macarena-like workaround but I couldn't get it to work for me.
I will try rooting and stickmount tonight.

Hi:
I am sorry that you are having problems with Nexus Media Importer. The author did not say that NMI was very problematic with 4.3. He said that a few people were having random problems with 4.3. Aside from you, looking at reviews on the play store, there were no reviews that couldn't be straightened out with the work around. I support six other Nexus 7 owners and none of us ever had any problems nor had to use any work arounds on 4.22 nor 4.3. Again, you may have been one of the few with a problem but looking at play store reviews and the many, many reports on this forum with 4.3, Nexus Media Importer works with OTG on stock Nexus 7 tablets.
It streams and copies with NTFS and does the same and writes with Fat32. It does not support exfat.
I have an extensive section on Nexus Media Importer in my Nexus 7 guide:

Hope that rooting works out for you.

Apparently I am not the only one to have this difficulty. It's great that you have had a different experience, I wish mine was that way.
This issue was with the 2013 Nexus 7. I had no problems with the 2012 version. Based on your comments about version 4.2.2 (which the 2013 version never shipped with) I wonder if your experiences are based on 2012 hardware?
Here is a quote from the developer's site "It appears that the Android 4.3 update broke the USB Host on some Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 2nd gen. devices. In Nexus Media Importer and Nexus Photo Viewer, these appear in the Connect screen as "Protected". It does not appear to affect a particular model, but devices at random. The issue has been reported to Google via the link below:"
You can find this at: http://nexususb.blogspot.com/2013/07/android-4.html along with his workaround (which requires multiple reboots so I view the workaround as macarena-like, certainly not a straightforward method)

Hi:
You are indeed not the only one having the problem but I still say the majority of users are not having any problems. Nonetheless, it's not very useful for me to say, "It works for me and not for you--nyah, nyah, nyah." So, let me say what works for me instead. All testing was done on a Nexus 7 2013, today. All flash drives were formatted with Fat32.
First of all, make sure you have write enabled in advanced preferences. If not, all flash drives will show up as Protected.
There are four variables, the OTG cable, adapters, the flash drive/sd card and the tablet.
We know that Asus production is uneven. As an owner of the TF101, 201, Nexus 7 2012 and Nexus 7 2013. I've been lucky to receive tablets without production defects but there are many folks who have been unlucky.
My OTG cables all come from the following vendor:
SANOXY Micro USB Host Mode OTG Cable $1.50
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005FUNYSA/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I use this Microsd Adaptor:
C2662 Black Micro SD SDHC TF USB card Reader Adapter Support 32GB Mini Hi-Speed $4.98
http://www.ebay.com/itm/C2662-Black...pter-Support-32GB-Mini-Hi-Speed-/200731336666
I use this flash drive as it's small and doesn't weigh down the OTG cable:
SanDisk Cruzer Fit CZ33 32GB USB Flash Drive (SDCZ33-032G-B35) $21.49
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00812F7O8/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have a couple of Sandisk 64gb Microsd Class 6 cards formatted to NTFS, not useful as they are no longer for sale.
I tested my friend's SanDisk Class 10 Ultra 64gb MicroSD XC I, formatted with great difficulty to Fat32. Sandisk Class 10 cards have a hidden partition, only come formatted with exfat, are difficult to format to fat32--designed incompatibility. I am done with Sandisk MicroSd cards. Instead I recommend
Kingston Digital 64GB MicroSDXC Class 10 Flash Card (SDCX10/64GB) $59.99
http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-64GB-MicroSDXC-SDCX10/dp/B009X0G304/ref=sr_1_1
In addition to the above, I tested it with several SanDisk cruzer usb drives, 16 and 32, a four gig PNY flash drive and even an odd fish-shaped flash drive that my friend had trouble reading on some laptops.
All of the Microsd cards worked, the NTFS cards worked with copying streaming, not write. All of the flash drives worked with write. None showed up as protected.

Glad we are not engaging in a tit-for-a-tat exchange. The OTB cable I had worked with my 2012 N7. I will order the one you used and see if that is any different.
Mike
UPDATE: I ordered one but it looks just like the one I have.
I noticed one problem with stickmount and videos: Apparently something gets a little too sleepy when the tablet sleeps. I was using a nightly build of VLC, and paused the video playback for about 10 minutes, when I woke up the tablet and it tried to resume, it couldn't do it. I tried the same video and pause after copying the file to the /sdcard, and the resume from pause worked fine. Definitely an obscure case, but there was a difference with OTG.

I've been scouring the internet looking for an answer about USB host mode on the 2013 Nexus 7 as well, and I can't find anything about it, other than one stray comment on the Google Play store saying that it does not. I'm still hoping that it will though. I ordered two of them at work, they will be here on Tuesday. I'll try a USB device on one of them first thing, and I will let you know.
If the 2013 Nexus 7 doesn't have host mode, I'll be sticking with a 2012 Nexus 7. That's a dealbreaker for me.
Nexus Media Importer is supposed to work. Otherwise rooting and using an app like Stickmount will give you full functionality.
Same situation with Gen1 Nexus 7.
Got my hands on one. An Apple USB keyboard and USB flash drive works, a USB mouse did not. By default it provides 8 mA, and the Apple keyboard drew 80 mA.
This should work. It's an MicroUSB OTG cable (It came with an Android Stick), and attached to it is one of the little USB MicroSD card readers that are often included when you buy the SD Card.
(The card is shown pulled out from the reader).
I cannot verify that it works, because I just got my N7(2013) tonight, and I have not yet rooted or installed Nexus Media Importer.
For right now, I stuck my old tablet's card in the Micro-reader, and stuck the micro reader in the USB port on my NAS, and I am pulling everything back down with ES File.
I'll try mounting OTG Storage - perhaps from the command line, once I get some time to play with this thing.

How's the drive formatted? I imagine here's a good chance a 64GB flash drive will be formatted with exFAT, which stock Android can't deal with.

HI,
I'm thinking of buying seagate backup plus 1tb external hdd(no external power supply required) to use it for USB OTG with nexus 7 2013.
Will it work? I'm rooted and have stickmount installed with ntfs binaries, works well with a 128gb flash drive.
Heard it works for galaxy s4,as the nexus is a tablet, it should work right?
Thanks
PS: Don't worry about file system stuff. I just want to know if nexus 7 is able to power it up and if anyone's been using it.
