Is it possible to activate the "Okay Google" command while the screen is off similar to Motorola devices? I know once you wake up the screen you can unlock it with that command but I'd love to be able to turn the screen on and unlock all in one step. I have root access and am considering flashing the Xposed framework if there is a module that would allow for this feature. I'd appreciate any help!

Pretty sure you have to do this through the smartlock feature..
I have that feature activated but it still only works with the screen on (from a double tap or power button click).
When you are charging the phone you can activate the voice command with the screen off. Other than that nope.
Dang that's too bad. Thanks for the information man.

Hey everyone, I am wondering if anybody has tried out the trusted voice feature of google now? I'm trying to get this working. I have an LG G4, running the latest OS and patches as of 6/19. The end goal is that I want to say "Ok Google" from a completely locked and shut off screen, and have it wake up the phone and accept a command. Ideally, I would like to be able to wake the phone up and have it accept commands from a dark screen, even without a lock screen in place, but I'm not sure that's even possible. I want to do this so I can do some voice controls while i'm in the car, without having to interact with the phone and unlock it every 30 seconds.
Here is what I have setup:
1 - Settings - Lock Screen - Select a screen lock - Created a PIN
2 - Settings - Lock Screen - Smart Lock - Trusted Voice change to On
3 - Google Settings - "Ok Google" detection - From the google app/From any screen/Trusted voice all turned On
The end result is that if the screen is locked but lit up, I can say Ok Google and it will accept a command. However, if the screen is dark, it does not respond at all. Has anyone else tested the trusted voice feature, and is this expected behavior? I did a search but haven't come up with anything. Thanks in advance for any help.
I use that but it will only unlock from off if charging.

Hi everyone, is there any way to activate the google now "ok google" detection with screen locked (like nexus devices)? It would be really useful to use phone "hands free" in car!
Thanks in advance
Go to google now settings, enable "ok google" detection from any screen and trusted voice. Go to settings/display/lock screen/smart lock and make sure trusted voice is enabled there.
Now plug your phone into car charger or power bank and you're good to go. "OK Google" on lock screen works only when the device is charging.
Currently I have double tap to wake with Smart lock enabled. Unfortunately it takes me to lock screen and I have to swipe to go to home screen. Is there any Tasker plugin or any other way to go to home screen instead of lock screen on double tap? I have tried Tasker with my limited knowledge, but couldn't achieve it...
Update: Achieved with Tasker
Try AutoInput

Can we not achieve that in Tasker without AutoInput?

To be completely honest I'm not too sure since I don't use the feature myself. I did see it somewhere in that plugin though, which is why I recommended it.

Thanks, will try that
I have the same problem / need. I use smartlock based on android wear watch paired with my galaxy S9, which means I never have to enter my pin, but for some silly reason whenever I wake up the phone using tasker I still can't get past the slide to unlock.
My current workaround which meets my immediate needs (maybe not yours).... on my phone which I carry in a holster on my hip is to use fingerprint sensor to manually unlock while the phone is in the holster. I also have a tasker task to vibrate upon unlock (bypasses slide to unlock) which gives feedback when I'm successful. Surprisingly, fingerprint sensor doesn't care which way you rotate your finger on the sensor - it still recognizes it.
After I unlock the phone I initiate actions from my smartwatch - things like initiating google voice search in a way that preserves my preferred note to self behavior (goes to google keep including transcript and recording... doesn't work if you start google voice search by saying ok google)

Can you explain step by step please?
Just install AutoInput from playstore (it's not free), it has an option to unlock the screen automatically if you have FaceUnlock enabled.
Does "OK Google" wake-up a hardware feature? If not what about a custom command?
If I flash GApps with Google Search, I can use "OK, Google" even when the screen is off. That is, the screen turns on by itself when I say that. But is that a fixed hardware feature? If not, could a user make Nexus 7 to turn on and unlock with a custom phrase like "Presto" by creating a flashable ZIP that uses the same API?
I wondered about this because Nexus 7's power button is difficult to press, Nexus 7 does not support double-tap-to-wake, I don't want to use a magnetic cover, and I can't use "OK, Google" as it would wake up all other devices in the vicinity. It would be helpful if I could just turn on the screen and unlock the device with a personal secrete word.
Unlike more recent phones (like say my Nokia 8) I am UNABLE to get my trusty daily driver, the P2, to wake up when the screen is off even though I have "Voice Match with Screen Off" activated in the Google Assistant settings. The screen HAS to be on (pressing home button, double tap, etc...) for the "OK Google" command to work and then it will correctly unlock the phone with my voice.
Has anyone found a workaround for this (forcing microphone to stay on somehow? or am I maybe missing an obvious setting on the P2 ? Thanks !

It can only be done with screen on however, you can activate google assistant in screen off when your phone is being charged.
ok I suppose that's a limitation of our older phone...Actually I think the "listen while charging" option was the old "Ok Google", the Google Assistant doesn't have that anymore as I can tell.

Older phone? Nah, keeping mic on all the time costs battery and and this is dependent on the manufacturer and chipset which decide the features set. Droid Maxx was even older phone but it had that feature because it had a separate low power core for listening to OK Google Now.
Right, it's just that now most (all ?) phones would have that enabled.
I couldn't find an app to force the MIC to stay on but with "WaveUp", you can wave your hand above the sensor to turn on the screen and then use "OK Google".

And this is perfect explanation.
Is anyone really willing to be monitored by Google all the time ?
