Nexus 7 2013 is permanently awake - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

My Nexus 7 is permanently awake. It is not rooted, so I could not easily check for wakelocks. I did try the method to run wakelock detector on a non-rooted device, however, and it started working for a moment, until I restarted Nexus. While it was working, it showed a 97% Awake state for a day or two of running.
However, the wakelocks were minimalistic. At first, there was Any.do showing some good amount of holding awake state, but it was far from permanent wakelock. In a moment however the top 3 wakelock holders disappeared and only minimalistic wakelocks stayed. The minutes of awake state of the wakelocks shown would not add up nearly up to an hour of awake state, whereas the device was awake for more then 24 hours already.
Android system processes were shown too.
Do you know what could be causing a permanent awake state of the device? Can I do anything about it other than rooting the device? Towelroot is not working and I know of no other rooting method that would not leave my device flashed to the factory state (do not wanna lose state of the device).
(I have a duplicate question like this on the stack exchange community, however I presume I might get more case-specific attention here at xda http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/119829/nexus-7-2013-is-permanently-awake )

[Q] Dumb wakelocks, wakeups, help?

Upon loading up BBS, I come across these rather annoying wakelocks:
"wlax_rx_wake" (37m)
"battery-monitor" (27m)
"wlan_wake" (13m)
"mdm_hsic_pm0" (12m)
Partial Wakelocks:
"NetworkLocationLocator" (2m)
Basically, these are repete foes. Their times vary, but they're always there. Sometimes, they go up to hours.
Also, I'm noticing that Maps always has a top 3 spot in my battery usage (using the stock battery info). I'm not using maps, I have location services turned off, but it's always there. I tried clearing the data, didn't do a thing.
Last, I've noticed that many apps "wake up" my GN2 (found it in BBS). Ebay Mobile woke it up over 700 times, so I uninstalled that. Maps wakes it up over 300 times, not even sure why.
Android OS also has a "stay awake" time of 3h, 49m, 45s.
What's going on? How can I solve these issues?
I'm on Jedi 3.3.
Android os is, well, android os, some usage will always be there to run your phone.
That said, if 37 min wakelocks in the span of a full day, is not much. Wakelocks are necessary for some services to run. If you have maps wakelock for several hours with location services off, my guess is an app that is badly coded is checking for location even though it's off.
It would be helpful with a screenshot of kernel and partial wakelocks.

Here are some screens, keep in mind that they have been much, much worse on my past charging cycles.
Oh and the maps data in these is after I killed maps, dug deeper to disable location services, and wiped maps' data.
37 minutes is the span of after a reboot, I'd say about 6 hours. They've increased (in the screens) over the past few hours. Pre-reboot, the wakelocks were up in the 1.5-2hr mark.
Please post with "since charged" or unplugged, since battery stats shows thirteen hours uptime.
The maps lock is only 3 mins and negligible, despite the intimidating red line You might rather have an app using wifi constantly unless you've actively been using wifi for a long time, or you have bad signal or a poorly configured wifi.

for the first time ever my phone drained 10% or more over night, its never done that before even though i had every off.. and i did the same as i normally do, but for some reason it seemed to have drained a lot more last night
Ah, I'll have to post those tomorrow. I don't have a reference point saved it says.
That 3 minutes used to be close to 30 before I wiped the data and rebooted, I'm only concerned because maps is showing up as one of my battery killers in the stock battery info dialog, even though I haven't used it all day.
I did see through Watchdog that "friendservice" and its related processes have been running up pretty high, but I have latitude and everything else disabled?

Event log service battery drain

I currently have a problem that "Google services -> event log service" is draining my battery a lot,
I was asking this in another thread about this problem but got told I should ask here in the specific forum for my phone.
I fully charged it during night and at 2:30am I rebooted the phone and unplugged the charger.
Now in the afternoon at 5pm I checked again (haven't used the phone since then) and battery was at 62 %
Wakelock detector is showing an activity of Google-services/Event log service with 1 hour 43 minutes.
Wlan off, 3G on, GPS off, bluetooth etc off.
I disabled all unessesary syncs including google backup/restore, not helping at all.
I checked developer settings for log recording etc.. but everything is off.
It's the international E975 model btw,
I have the same issue. I think i tweaked it too much lol.
Partial wakelocks in BBS indicates EventLogService has been on for 5h.. -_-
Have you done any tweaks to it? I.e: freeze anything from titanium, greenify, etc
This is a result of frozen apps.

hi there
so if i check what apps are frozen and uninstall them, this will get rid of the problem basically, that simple??
It may just cause more problems. The reason the wakelock is even appearing as event log service is because the app is frozen, but causing wakelocks. But wait, didn't we freeze it?.. how can it still be causing wakelocks? Some other system level app is still capable of waking it, so it may or may not be something important.

cheers, actually i have LOTS of wakelock time taken from these 2:
1) Alarm Manager - Android System. this one grows by 5 units every time i unlock the phone and check, NORMAL??
2) Event Log Service - Google Services, this one is a bit more quiet but still growing silently.
Things i have on:
usually sync, but those 2 above grow regardless of sync being on or off, then i have 2 alarms in the calendar, one active and one not and some calendar notifications.
are those responsible? right now my phone is doing around 2% battery use but i notice that it grows very easily, just now i lost 1% in only 25 minutes.
the "awake" graph under battery looks strange.. sometimes it matches screen off (so good), sometimes, it seems to be on, with screen OFF for no reason whatsoever.
any idea?
thanks

Strange battery usage behaviour

I have a strange issue with my 32G WiFi FLO that I was hoping the knowledgeable members of XDA could help me diagnose.
Since I got it at launch, it's been sucking the battery dry. But not consistently. I have no idea what or why, but here's what I know so far:
All details are with auto sync OFF. WiFi OFF on sleep, location services ON (but cannot use WiFi)
Not unlocked or rooted (stock)
- From boot, and for the first 20-40 hours after that, battery usage on standby averages out to around 0.13% per hour.
- After that, and for no reason I can discern, battery usage jumps to an average of 0.84% per hour, and keeps draining like this usually until I reboot or need to charge
- Stock battery app shows no apps draining, BBS shows no apps draining stuff or excessive wakelocks and indicates the tablet is spending most of its time in deep sleep.
- Life with screen usage seems to be around 7+ hours either way, so this is as expected.
- Sent to ASUS to diagnose & repair, received with note that front camera unit replaced and OS reloaded.
- Issue is still occurring after "repair"
- apps running at the time are usually Android Keyboard, Android Services, Settings. Sometimes Play Store, Currents (even though I don't use it and have never launched it), Google Play Services as well. These are the only apps that run regardless of state of battery drain.
Can anyone think of any reason this is occurring, or where else I can go to check for more info? I'd prefer to stay stock/unrooted.
I'm looking to send it back for RMA *again*, but I'd rather tell them where to look than try and trust that they'll know where to look to fix it this time.
Guess no-one else has this issue or any ideas on where to look for this, since there are no replies

Battery drain in Nexus 5X while dozing: GPS is turned on sporadically & RILJ

Hello everyone,
I have a Nexus 5x with android Marshmallow 6.0.1, and for a long time now I'm having problems with Doze feature overnight. On a regular basis when I'm going to sleep - I turn off wifi and mobile data. Some mornings I wake up to see that battery was drain by almost 10% even though doze was active some of the time.
I attached the graphs of "Battery Historian" for last night. Though the battery drain is not horrible in this case, there are two things that I don't understand why they occur:
1. between doze periods, GPS is turned on. On my device "Location" is off and also "WiFi scanning". When I checked which app used GPS during this log, it says "com.waze", which is the domain of the Waze navigation app. However, even if one of its services does come to life between dozes, I don't understand how it is able to turn on GPS location without my active permission. I should say that some night another app will do that, like Tinder.
2. One wakelock that governs the wakelock charts is RILJ, which I understand is connected to location approximation using cellular networks. While the first problem I mentioned happens to me for several months now, this wakelock appears in the logs only recently. I think it relates to an app I recently installed called "Smart Wifi Toggler" which is supposed to automatically turn WiFi on/off depending on approximated location triggers. I uninstalled the app the same day I installed it, however since then RILJ wakelock always appears in the logs.
Last, I wonder if I should upgrade to Nougat. I understand Doze is better utilized with it, but I heard many users desire to downgrade back to marshmallow. In the case I do upgrade, I will perform cache and memory wipe so I don't know what will happen to these bugs. And the researcher in me still wants to know the sources of these errors.
Any help with these matters will be greatly appreciated.

Battery drain

Hello.
I've bought a G4 in March and only 20 days ago I've started to notice a odd and big battery drain. Android tells me it's "Android SO" consumption. What once drained like up to 5%, now drains more than screen. 20 days ago, battery lasted like 34h. With same usage now, turned 12h.
I've uninstalled the apps I've installed meanwhile, used it in battery eco mode and even on airplane mode, without any luck.
4-5 days ago I've installed Wake Lock Detector (no root, but with the right permissions) and Better Battery Stats. From what I understand from the reports, they don't blame any specific app but show thousands of wakelocks on Android SO. I believe sometimes it can be normal (for instance, when I run with GPS and music). Anyway, maybe the issue lies here.
What I find really odd is that those 2 apps say that the phone is awake more than 90% of the time. Like 1h of deep sleep only per full battery.
I could understand if someone says that it's the battery that had a great use already, but not only has 7 months of use, but also the phone behaviour changed (Android SO was never so high before, at least constantly).
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Suggest you check out and install the apps recommended apps on ✭[GUIDE][26-07-2016]Extreme Battery Life Thread(Greenify+Amplify+Power Nap)✭ at https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/guide-extreme-battery-life-t3095884
Read the OP thoroughly for each app discussed. The wakelock situation can be helped a good deal with Amplify and Greenify in particular - the paid versions - but I would also install AppOppsXposed - all require Xposed which requires root in order to be installed and I would also check out Power Nap to see if any incremental improvement.
You may a also want to run a malware scan ...
Thanks for the info. I checked it earlier, but most of those apps only run in root phones. I'm waiting for official Nougat in G4, mostly because haven't saw yet a Nougat image for this device without any problems, like camera not working, or such. I wouldn't mind to pay for apps that could work on this, but I want to avoid rooting. I guess I rather put Android 7, that has a bigger chance to even solve this problem, than root at this time.
Haven't said earlier but did a factory reset yesterday and device kept the behavior... I believe a hard reset would reduce almost to 0 the eventual malware problem.
No obvious alternatives for not rooted phones? Haven't this happened to someone else and been solved?
Thanks!
I had the same problem a few weeks ago...i was loosing ~30% of the battery at night with no wifi/data/gps etc. I tried everything...factory resets, different roms, greenfy & those kind of apps but the phone would not sleep. The last thing i tried was a factory reset and after i logged into my gmail account i set the phone as a new device...so no restoring apps and backups from my gmail account. Now everything is ok, my phone sleeps like a baby. I've read somewhere that it might be related with the syncing & backups....i don't really know, but you can give it a try.

Haven't tried that yet. I'll try to remove and add the device again, to avoid the pain of a new hard reset.
To have a reference, it was good to know an average percentage of other G4 deep sleep. If everyone has around 90%... maybe it's not a problem at all. The "sleep like a baby" is which percentage? Also, there are plenty babies that wake up hourly crying for a period of time...
Thanks for the tip!

My phone was awake >90% of the time(when screen was off), even in flight mode, when it had "the problem". Now things are back to normal...~2% awake when the screen is off.
Hello again.
Tried to reset a couple more times, tried to remove old phone register in my gmail account, but I wasnt successful.
How you did the
"The last thing i tried was a factory reset and after i logged into my gmail account i set the phone as a new device..."
?
Once it asks for my account, I'm not able to set it's a new device. I also did no restores... Is there a way to disconnect devices from Google account? I was only able to do so in devices I connected like one month, or more, ago, but not able to do so in the device I'm using at the moment.
One thing I did not try but that would confirm your thesis is to register device with a new account.
Anyone with an alternative?
I'm hoping LG really releases Nougat for G4 in 2017...
Today, the device returned to normality without any intervention. I can only imagine the following: since last factory reset I've disabled some apps I didn't used, like Google books, or Google music, but only yesterday I did a normal reboot (due to huge battery drain...). Eventually, some updates just took place after this reset. Anyway, even having imagined this theory, I don't believe in it. Wizardry, I bet.
