I've had this problem for a long time but as it's not my primary phone I've not really looked into it, but as I'm using it for tethering more and more often it's about time I really looked into it. Currently using 2 batteries and a desktop charger.
Desire HD, plug in, any cable, I get the orange light but the power is still draining.
I've tried Ampere, which is showing a charge of 280mA - 340mA and displays as charging but battery percentage is still dropping. Battery is getting warm as it normally would.
If the phone is off, then plugged in, it boots to recovery. If shut down while plugged in, it still reboots to recovery.
I'm sure this is a hardware issue, but is it likely to be a simple charge socket replacement (the data part works fine) or is it likely to be something more complex (expensive)?
Quit same problem i was facing on my desire z few months ago just change my old data cable and problem solved. I first recommend you to charge it with any other cable.

And secondly , are you using CWM recovery ? If yes then its not hardware problem its your recovery problem . change that and install latest TWRP recovery. I hope that will fix your all issues .

try plugging the charger to the phone connected to any electricity outlet also if your battery is pretty dead sometimes you need to let it charge for up 5 minutes before it can turn on
Doesn't help tried the new accumulator. Phone dead.
Same thing happened to me I was just about to post
Edit: mine speccifically freezes on the Droid eye then bootloops

This just in im a wizard. so the phone was off and i held volume down and power to get in to the stock recovery the i cleared data and it continued to loop. Then I did it again but i pulled the battery in the middle of the data clear and reinserted it then it finished clearing and booted!
How to return it to life? Nobody
can help?
Do what I did in the post before

I don't understand about what you speak.
Power off the phone and hold volume down and then power at the same time until it goes to a white hboot screen then use the volume keys to select data reset and press power to select. If it still doesn't then on try that again

Hey,
I know this thread is ancient, but I was wondering if you found out what is causing this in your phone as I just started having the exact same problems as you.
Background info:
1 - I had no issues what so ever with the phone.
2 - I went snowboarding and I dropped my phone (stupid for many reasons I know) in the snow and I literally ran over it.
3 - That same day, my girlfriend spilled some beer on it (only a little, and it did not bath in it).
4 - The phone stayed on and worked correctly with no problem all day that day.
5 - I plugged in the phone to charge (while still one) and it does not charge, nor does it have the "thunderbolt" icon to show charging.
6 - I powered off. The phone shows the "thunderbolt" in white and proceeds to charge.
7 - Went to friends to watch superbowl. Borrowed his Galaxy SIII charger to charge. Does not charge while one. Also, does not charge powered off either (although the thunderbolt does show up while in the powered off state).
8 - Went home, and phone charged while powered off and using it's normal AC charger.
9 - Plugged into PC via USB cable, and does not charge powered on, nor off. PC states that the USB plugged in is faulty and is damaged (doesn't connect).
Any solutions/insights? Or is the hardware permanently damaged?
Thanks.

Ugh, nevermind, I found it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599747&highlight=doesn+t+charge&page=4
I lifted the pins up some using an exacto knife. The bugger charges now, but my PC still says that the USB device is malfunctioning. Still, the bigger issue of charging is now taken care of.
I have a similar issue.. I went snowboarding the other day. When I was done and went in the lodge to leave I pulled my phone out and it got cold and was covered in condensation.. I was stupid and didn't power it down or pull the battery but just left it in my pocket.. When I go to the car at first it wouldn't charge.. I pulled out the USB and put it in a few times.. Finally it charged.. 2hrs later at home I was going to bed and went to let it charge and the first few times it wouldn't charge.. Finally it did and I fell asleep..
Now today I tried plugging it in and it wouldn't charge at all. I took it all apart messed around and it still doesn't charge right.. If I plug it in with the phone off and watch the battery charge screen it keeps re looping and the eventually doesn't show the charging screen at all..
The weirdest part is that if I plug it in powered off and I go into twrp.. It shows it is charging.. And from harp I can reboot system and when the phone boots up as long as the cable stays in, the phone will continue to charge.. But if I remove the cable and put it back it will not charge..
Unless I do it through tarp again..
Any thoughts?

Hey all im having a charging issue with my gnex, It will fully charge, however the issue is when I unplug the phone it says that its still charging then it will say its discharging(like normal) however a few seconds later it does the same thing and keeps doing this until the battery hits about 85% then it will act normally. What bothers me the most is the screen will come on and stay on and im worried of LCD burns. I have odined to stock tried multiple different ROMs and Kernels and to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance
Have you cleared the battery stats? Also try the EZ battery calibration app from play store that helped me tremdously good luck
Charging issue
I was having the issue with my Gnex. when i plugged it to the charger it would charger but when i unplugged it it will say that its charging. just like yours mine would fix itself. at first i though it was s/w so i factory reset and even flashed another rom or same rom. i did notice something this only happened when i plugged it to a certain charger which was a Samsung charger but not the original. i stop using that cable and never had the issue again

I can adore you that neither one helped you. You just so happened to fix the problem independently at about the same time. In a nutshell, you're equating correlation with causation.
Batterystats.bin has absolutely nothing to do with battery charge. The only info contained in that file is a list of apps that have operated on battery since the last full charge- nothing more. The file is automatically cleared each time you unplug the phone after a full charge. The wives' tale of that affecting battery charge or the reported charge level was officially debunked by a member of. Google's Android team early this year.
It is for this same reason that apps that claim to calibrate your battery are 100% snake oil.

It would seem that your USB port may be shorted or, less likely, you have a defective battery.

Ok so i fixed it (and it was rather simple too)
i plugged the phone into the wall and popped out the battery and left it plugged it for a min or two. then i unplugged it put the battery back in and let it show the charging then popped out the battery again then the usb. Put the battery back in and powered on and its working normally now.
Today, i found my xpm switched off. Tried to power it on,it didnt. Thinking that it was out of charge, i plugged in the device for some time. The led was blinking red in sequence. Tried to power it on again, but again it didnt. Failing to power on even after charging for two hours, i have tried all key combos, tried to boot into fastboot mode. Sadly it is not booting to fastboot mode. Any idea? Dont tell me its the infamous red light of death
when you charged it the red light should not turn off.try to put your phone elevated from the charger ..if the red lights blinks when you try to power on it it means its low power that it can't make your phone boot.
when you charge .it should be steady red light .if no light then its not charging

I have an option for last resort to force a charge into a phone. Don't try this unless you have to. I'm not familiar with your phone but have done this on a few droid razrs and even Asus tablets.
First find an old USB cord that you no longer need. Cut the head off and strip the wires back enough there should be 3 wires. You only need the red and black. Strip them so they are separated and have room to work with em. Next figure out what contact is positive on the battery and negative on the battery. Try taping the red to the positive and black to the negative. Make sure they do not touch eachother. And leave on charger for at least 30 minutes. Do not try to fully cage a battery this way would possibly over charge the battery and could cause damage or even harm.
They droid razrs would get the white light of death and the first nexus 7 by asus did something similar where the battery dies and power going into the changer isn't being sent to the battery this negates the computer and forces a small charge into the battery once Bootable the phone should charge regularly good luck

My original usb cord got away from me. Been using a LG cord. Getting unknown device in device manager. Getting a full fast charge, stock recovery(Power and vol up)
NO OS on phone. Got wiped clean.
My question is how important is the original usb cord when using adb sideloading? Pc not recognizing fire phone and getting unknown device in device manager. I'm getting the device does not recognize or has malfunctioning pop up when I connect!
I don't understand, with another USB cable your phone charges faster? I use the stock but with 1.8A how writes on wall charger and 2400mAh battery, must be fully charged in 1h 40minutes

My bet is that you need to replace the battery. I was stuck at the logo bootloop on two different fire phones... I could get to recovery just like you also. I could adb new romantic also, only to reboot to bootloop and stuck at Amazon logo. I ordered a new battery for one and replaced it like the utube video shows and it fixed my phone. Ordered another one for my wife's phone and it fixed it also. It was tough to get the battery out because of the glue/tape, but mangling the old one, I got them out.... Just follow the video on utube, got my batteries from two different vendors through eBay....
