Disabling 2 A57 cores in CPU - Verizon LG G4

I was looking into battery saving options for the G4, and I read that the extra 2 cores do provide extra functionality, but are very big battery drainers. I wasn't sure how to disable them but if anyone knows how I'll test it out and report back on the pros and cons of doing this.

You would need a custom kernel in order to do anything with the cores. In order to Flash a kernel you would need an unlocked boot loader which the G4 does not have. Most likely disabling the A57 cores would give a bunch of lag in use of the phone.

[Q] SetCPU - Extra Info?

Hi there, thinking about getting SetCPU - I have some questions before I do because I hear it can be dangerous?
- I've heard it can brick your phone?
- What if you set it too high?
- Do you personally have to monitor it?
- What are the benefits?
- Use alot of battery?
- Is it really worth using?
- Is it optimized for different phones - example the One X?
Thanks guys!

Hi, i have read that SetCPU cannot view all the cores i have read alot saying that System Tuner works fine you might want to try that.
I used to use SetCPU on my sensation and never hand any issues with it i did not monitor the app at all
Benefits allows overclocking if available in kernel
it can be overclocked and cause some issues such as overheating but if set correctly will be fine doesnt use much battery if any
and no i dont think you can brick your phone
if you set it too high i believe i had to reflash rom nothing major
BTW this is based on my own knowledge and usage
Hope this helps
Thanks man

None in theory, if the CPU is slower it takes longer to go from
idle - process - idle
Faster speeds allow it to get it over and done with faster and get back to idle.
Of course it will at times stop the CPU going higher than it needs too which could save battery.
Under volting will save more batter then underclocking ever will.

Thanks. I have system tuner, but what do I need to do in order to improve battery life?
I have set the governor to powersave. Is there anything else? How would I undervolt using this app?

undervolting requires your phones kernel to support it, currently on these forums there is only one that does but i haven't tested it, sticking firm to the "stock kernel is best" and will do untill the kernels have more time to mature.
you could limit your max speed to 1 GHz, if you are rooted you can use Core control to turn off cores and run your phone as a dual core.

Not to be lazy, but would running the phone as dual core and limiting it to 1 ghz result in a perceptible battery savings? I'm trying to get a feel for how much I should expect custom ROMs to make my One X perform up to par. Thus far, I've installed two custom ROMs and felt like the improvements were all safely in the minor category.
I did install cyanogenmod 7 on a phone last year wow, that resulted in major benefits.

Running on 2 cores stops the phone from using and 2 cores uses less power then 4, playing games and using all cores is over kill 2 cores will run the game without lag use less power and make less heat.
You'll maybe get 10% from doing that but I haven't tested.
Really the only time any of this saves battery is during demanding programs, tegrea has a super low power companion core, for all your power saving needs.

I tried conservative governor while downloading sd files for Nova3 gave execllent results
I strongly advice not to undervolt tegra3
t3 is not like any other chip and UV or OC should not be attempted
OC because the chip is already at the max of its thermals
UV for the same reason n might end up with problems like flicker
changing governors and UC should be enough

What does quad core control do?

Hey folks everyone on here is praising about the quad core control feature in the battery settings, other then the fact it saves your battery, how does it function? I have it toggled on first time using it. I've Google it and no luck. If anyone knows please share. Thanks.

It puts your un-needed cores into a deep sleep when not needed faster... it's like power saver vs performance mode.
If you want to physically see what it does I suggest this.. download an app that lets you see the state of each of your cpu's like, CPU-Z. Turn quad core off open cpu-z and look at the start of your cpu's, try pulling down your notification bar or volume up and down, and take note of you cpu states and how long they stay that way...now turn quad core optimizion on and do the same. You should notice a difference... with quad core on three of your cores will go into deep sleep quicker thus saving your battery. I personally LOVE quad core optimizion.
Hope this was helpful..
When the f*ck did we get ice cream??
Thanks man summed it for me, I personally can't tell the difference in performance.
Edit: performance as in speed, as in battery life OMG wow!
I think there's no quad core option on F240k or Korean version
How can I enable it?
Can somebody help?

When on, this option allows the cores to power down and perform at a lesser output in order to save power. When off, the cores will fire up and perform at optimal level with higher output. It's basically a battery saving feature.
For e988 indonesia quad control on mean only 2 core active..core 0 and core 1...never see activities on core 2 and 3...become dual core ...
See with cpu-z and play q internet and q video

It uses different governors, like "powersave" in quadcore turned on, and "on-demand" in quadcore turned off. And those governors not handmade but optimized directly by Qualcomm therefore work better than CyanogenModes ones

No different, but in case this is light game.
If i play high graphic games with or without quad control the result is same.
CPU will always stick as high as possible
It turns processor to dual core.

[Q] Anybody overclock or underclock CPU?

So i have a rooted my lg g pad and was thinking about using an app such as tegrak overclock to change the cpu frequency. I would like to know if somebody that has tested this can confirm it is safe and state the minimum and maximum safe frequenies. If you would like to know my motives, i would like my tablet to lag a little less in the higher of bloons tower defense 5 and some other games. I would also like to be able to underclock to improve battery life.
I don't have a G Pad yet but you'll want a custom kernel with modified frequency and voltage table before you overclock, otherwise your device will freeze.
If you want better performance, your RAM is more important. Use titanium back up to remove any bloatware or go with CM11.
I keep my device underclocked by 50% to prolong battery and get no problems with games.

I just bought my G Pad yesterday and the first thing I did was root it and then install Titanium backup and Greenify, those two apps do wonders to battery life and lag. As for overclock it is as you say we would have to wait for some custom kernel that allows it but from my understanding it is the Gpu and not the Cpu which is the bottleneck.
So yeah for underclocking and to fix some lag you should install Titanium backup and Greenify but be careful on what you uninstall in TB because you don't want to remove some things like for me the Knock-on feature is probably the best thing ever
For refernece, I have my Z1 clocked at 0.2Ghz to 1.2Ghz(from 2.2Ghz) all the time unless I am playing a game where I have different "setCpu profiles" for different games, setting the governor as "interactive" or "ondemand" usually makes my Z1 sit at 0.2Ghz when it is in idle-mode.
A couple of people have mentioned Greenify. I'm using Battery Doctor on my phone and it seems to do a good job. Is there any reason to choose Greenify over Battery Doctor?

It does what I want and seeing as both my Z1 and my G Pad have some good battery saving eatures I don't see the point in using extensive apps. Usually I just want one app which does what I want and Greenify does that in a perfect way.
Haven't used battery doctor myself but my guess would be that it is equally as good as Greenify
I've checked mine and it seems fine. Android is set as last resort.
it lags? mine is superfast and it's not without 2-3 dozens of apps. i've even underclocked the cpu to run at 1.5ghz, it's very fast anyway. and using its default energy saving + greenify + underclocked cpu i have a better battery too.
I've had my G Pad for a month now and no problems running at 1.1GHz. Great battery life, too

cup throttling for battery life?

Cpu tweaking won't be a thing till customs Kernels, we don't have undervolt or good governors
We should be able to underclock but I don't like that idea much on anything
The Cpu governor right now is set to interactive on all cores by default
And row as io sched by default

CPU throttling isn't going to be a huge help anyway. That's a pretty minor effect in battery usage.

Overclocking of LG G4

Hi everybody,
I want to know if we can overclock our Snapdragon 808 to 2GHz (ARM A72 cores) with a modified kernel.
Also, If somebody is going to work on this challenge.

A57 cluster, probably yes. I'm also working on a kernel, but I intensely dislike Overclocking because it isn't all that useful. The key to performance is with optimisation, not with raw power. So I'm most likely not going to include it, sorry.
What about underclocking and/or undervolting?
I think performance is good enough as it is, but would like to get better battery life.
I would like to be able to undervolt in order to relieve the bugging high temp warning. This phone rarely uses max performance. So, overclocking is not really a priority. Maybe a custom hotplug.
Crappy cpu. No point messing with it.

Hotplugging has been dropped not long ago. You'd basically need to reinvent it. Plus it costs more power than it would save
And what about undervolting to prevent excessive heat, @mythos234?
yea i guess undervolting is the only benefit here coz 2 ghz wont be hard to achieve but getting that overheating msg sooner aint worth it...
next thing u know is accessory back plates with mini fans to keep the phone cool...
seriously tho what good is the extra power for ? the phone is already fast with the correct setup (not that i saw any lag when it was stock)
anyone knows how to see the cpu binning in this phone?

A number of people have gotten over-temperature messages, sometimes with the phones even shutting down.
This has been reported with using navigation, I believe, and I know people have reported it when shooting video. High screen brightness is likely a contributor. But there are examples of the phones running too warm.
Personally, I'd be more interested in cooler running, and longer battery life, rather than increased peak performance. So underclocking, if anything.
Well, the overclocking is not necessary, but is an opportunity to know the limits of the chipset. Moreover, with it we could know if we can make undervolting to our phones and make it more battery efficient with an underclocking kernel, when we need it.

Happens to me too when gaming. The problem I observe is that Indeed, it is not excessive heat. But LG thinks otherwise.
You can actually underclock using Kernel Auditor and disable cores. Unless you meant Undervolting.

Currently using Kernel Adiutor to disable both A57 cores and the phone screen does not heat up like before... Battery life has improved from what i saw yersterday. Continuing testing today. Only problem i have is the damn phone will enable one of the A57 cores after a while which i dont like. I need my settings to stick.
Any Kernel Dev know which files are causing this? Tab 3 had something like this but a couple of files changed solved the non sticking settings on cpu.
Overclocking/underclocking sure but just disabling cores would work for most.

I haven't had any popups or heat related reboots, so I was wondering what the matter is here.
On every phone I see complaints over heat so I wondered if something is to it here or if it's the usual. And if there are overheating warnings and shutdowns, then there might be indeed something in the bush.
Try charging your phone in the car whilst using google maps to get to an important meeting, and then take a call just for good measure............and boom, there you have your own little meltdown.

That happens on every phone I ever had though. It's advised to not use a device while charging at all, so if you stress it to 120% while charging, of course it heats up..
