Newb at rooting, flashing, ROMS. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

First things first... I've never had root or flashed. I've done research but can't seem to take all the information in correctly and scared of bricking. I've found guides but second guess myself on if it's the right way for this particular phone. I've read about flashing with odin and also read you can flash without a computer. I actually could care less about flashing but the only reason I want to isnbecause I bought my girlfriend a tmo s4 and updated the software to 4.4.4 and now the MHL and hotspot don't work. Now I just want to flash back to a previous android version that mhl and hotspot work on. No custom ROM just 100% stock android. I've read about custom recovery to do this also. Unless theirs a stock lollipop out for this phone I can flash to with working mhl and hotspot I'll do that. Can someone please help or guide me to the right direction? I'm not computer or phone newb just a newb to all the rooting and flashing. I'm just the type of person who needs good assistance on things like this. Thanks

MHL works for me on 4.4.4, can't say about hotspot because I don't use it. Did you try to factory reset?
Sorry, but you will only be able to flash back with a custom rom, but there are some near stock Roms. If you still want to go ahead with it, I can give you more details

So MHL works for you? Do you have galaxy s4 m919? Mhl works on my note 4 but not s4 now on 4.4.4. What MHL adapter are you using? I'm using the samsung adapter and hotspot gives me hotspot error.

I would back everything up with Samsung Kies and do a factory reset. This could fix your problems.
Jim

Maybe I should have detailed things more. When I bought the phone it was not on 4.4.4 and not sure what it was on but it had already been factory reset and everything worked fine. Then when I updated to 4.4.4 hotspot stopped working and MHL. I did a factory reset after the update and cache wipe and still nothing. I have the samsung mhl adapter I bought from bestbuy which works fine with my note 4. I hook my charger to the mhl adapter and hook the mhl adapter to the phone and it doesnt even detect it. It won't even charge it this way.

Yeah M919 and mhl works but I have the cheaper rocketfish cause I get them discounted. I'll give hotspot a shot later

I've seen instances where flashing the firmware again and factory resetting would fix odd issues. Worth a shot anyway

[Q] Bluetooth connecting problems

I got a galaxy gio awhile ago and i´m real happy with it except for one problem......it seem i can´t connect it to bluetooth devices except for other cellphones.
I have tried mine with an OBD2 reader and a wayfinder GPS dongle and a Jabra headset and it doesn´t find any of those 3 devices.
Everything else works fine on the phone and as i stated it can connect to other phones thru bluetooth so it seems to be a program issue.
I really don´t wanna flash my phone with another firmware as i am happy with what i got now and i´m also no pro at reflash this phone so i am wondering if there is a solution only for my bluetooth problem?
I have tried these 3 bluetooth devices with another gio and it connects without a problem to that other one so i know the devices is working in general.
Firmware in my GIO is:
Android 2.3.6
Gingerbread
If you need more to try to resolve this bluetooth issue info just give me a shout.
Maybe someone else have had this kind of problem also!?
Thanks

[Q] Did the Jelly Bean update lose usb otg support.

On Christmas I was helping setup a new Bell S III and wanted to connect a thumbdrive via OTG but the phone would not recognize it. To troubleshoot I connected it to another persons Telus S III that I had previously successfully used OTG on and it didn't work either. The only common thing among them was they had been updated to JB since I used it successfully.
I tested the cable on my S II and it still worked.
Both S3's are stock and staying that way.
Cable is good and has worked on the Telus S III back when it was on 4.0.x
USB-OTG for use with USB DAC's works great for me.
JB 4.1.1 Ultimatum ROM.

Tether no longer working after Lollipop update

I have a Singapore release of the One M8 and last night I ran the lollipop OTA. The install went fine with no problems but for some reason today tethering is no longer working. I've tried both wifi and usb tether on multiple computers with the same problem, that is it connects fine but there is no internet access. I've done a factory reset as well to no avail. I've also tried different APNs but didn't make any difference.
Anyone have any ideas?

Are you running any kind of firewall setup? I had an issue with tethering and UDP on lollipop. The solution was to switch to a blacklist.
I currently have the firewall turned off in Windows 8.

I actually meant on the phone. Android has iptables built in. However, I am guessing that is not your problem.
At this point, I have no idea, though.

I'm truly sorry to give you a bad news, but Lollipop by default disables tethering for networks that prohibit that (and believe me, more prohibit it than allow it - sometimes this info is very well hidden in contract).
I spent a long time trying to fix it, but with no luck.
Tethering works though with networks that allow it.
I fought with that after receiving Lollipop update to my NVIDIA SHIELD tablet - a total failure. Some folks reported that after rooting it helps one, simple modification of one config file. Let me know if you decide to root your phone, so I can give you some links. Google did block tethering on purpose - the have to play nicely with network operators, right? The trick is with packet's TTL - all you get on your connected device is timeout errors.
I won't tell you more details on that because I gave up - I didn't want to root my tablet.
But don't seek errors in your PC/whatever you want to connect to your Lollipop-based access point - it ain't gonna work.
P.S. Play Store apps that don't require root and are marketed as problem solvers don't work as well. The only way is root...
My carrier doesn't block tethering. It worked fine before the update and I also checked with my carrier and tethering is permitted.
I don't mind rooting so please post the links you are referring to.

Otg error issues after lollipop update

I have a 64gig otg cruzer and it works fine on my tmo note 4 and any other devices. After update on my complete stock m8 it says that otg is damaged when I insert it. I know the drive is good and everything else in rom is good. Can anyone who has a otg and stock rom verify that it works and it's not an issue on my part or any info on possible bug, thanks.

[Q] OTA Weirdness - Tab Pro 10.1

Got a notice of an OTA last night. Figured it was for Lollipop so told it to proceed. Once the tablet rebooted the WiFi radio was disabled. Looked in settings which showed that WiFi was on, but no radio. Went online an saw that Samsung hasn't sent out the Lollipop update for the 10.1.
Question 1 - how do I restore my tablet since I can't get WiFi turned on?
Question 2 - where did this weird OTA come from?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Others having same issue
Thought I'd post this as info. Checked over at Android Central and several people appear to be having the same issue. Looks like bad firmware from Samsung. Bad build number is: KOT49H.T520UEUAOD1. Wiping and factory refresh may help temporarily, but eventually the wifi radio will be disabled. I'm going to wait for Samsung to get their act together and flash a fresh build when it's released.
Thanks for the help.
Mike
My 10.1 Tab Pro was updated too but wifi is working fine. I'm not rooted though. Same build number that you mentioned.

Wifi Issue as well
I had the same update come across last night and now I can't connect to wi-fi to save my life. Really pissed off. Done 2 factory resets already, reset my modem at home, turns out it happens everywhere and not just at home. Wifi says it's on but doesn't pick up any networks in my area and won't connect to the 1 that is already known on my tab. PLEASE HELP
Got the update last week. Wifi is fine but now daily I get a random reboot. Never had any problems before. Thanks Sammy!

I have the same issue with the build described.
Does one know how to correct this firmware update if the tablet is unable to connect to the internet?

You can download an earlier firmware from sammobile.com. If you are in the US, use the firmware for cellular South and make sure it's a 4.4.2 that you are downloading. After you download it, you can flash it with Odin. There are several threads here on xda that describe this process. If you still need further help, post again.

Boy am I glad to find you guys with the same problem as I have. Couple of days ago I saw an update message and decited to go for it. Well, as all of you know, wifi stops working. Factory resets gets it working again but once everything is restored it stops working again! This is quite frustrating and I hope Samsung is working on a fix right now. I haven't been on XDA for a while and only rooted phones before. So how is the rooting/mod scene for tablets. Any good Custom Roms out there we can use until/when this is resolved? I'm good with directions and done some custom roms on my phones before. Let me know what's the good ROMS out there are...the bloatfree version is a welcome even without KNOX, I don't really use it.

Thanks for your feedback.
I had to use the firmware from November 2014 to get it to work and restore my wi-fi.
Again thanks
KOT49H.T520UEUAOD1 is the problem
Well I figure this particular firmware has a problem. Because even after factory reset, wifi works once and goes back to not working. So the best solution is to get an earlier version. I went back to Sep 15, 2014 version and it works well. Took forever to download from sammobile though. So if you need to flash to a previous version that works. I have post a link to the firmware I have on my OneDrive that got it working again, hopefully it will be faster for you to get your tablet working again. Here is a link. This is for the US Tab Pro 10.1 SM-T520.

thank you for those who warned about the wifi problems this OTA introduced. I'm just going to keep ignoring the tablets request to update. I thought i got a great deal on this tablet when i got a refurbished one for under $300 several months ago... but samsungs lack of support for this tablet is astonishing.
