Can i use a custom rom / recovery on this phone - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I am switching from the note 2 to a note 3, im ready to buy it like right now but i just need to make sure that the T-mobile note 3 can have a custom recovery no matter what, someone told me only certain versions
can have custom recovery/roms someone else told me they all can.
also i need to use the phone on att, so it should be as simple as switching the apn right thats easy enough.
i just need to make sure i dont buy a phone i cant use, can anyone advise me on this please before i spend 300 bucks. id appreciate it so freakin much.
Ryan

wrong thread but i have mine currently on cricket and it auto switched everything for me and yes custom roms available with custom recovery's. Not sure if you can rom the device still without tripping knox but you're buying used so probably don't care good luck.

[Q] SGH-T889v windmobile canada. PLEASE get in here.

Hey guys, sorry for posting this, but im desperate and have read until my eyes are falling out of my skull. I am willing to work with any dev if they need specific work/software ran/info to make this happen. Is there, or is there not clear concise directions on rooting SGH-T889v (wind mobile variant of note 2)?
remember we use AWS for our signal, the modem stuff is all different. this is were my expertise kinda falls short. BUT I AM WILLING TO HELP TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN. As far as iv'e seen there are no current methods of rooting this phone which is a damn shame considering its horsepower. i saw the all in one toolkit for note 2's, and i simply cannot afford to donate to unlock the functionality of the update that supports wind. So only ONE guy knows how? I believe dev's should get paid and should accept donations, they are the real workers and smart guys. I don't work for free either, However this kinda defeats the purpose of the ecosystem we fought so hard to have.... open and accessible platforms were we the users are in control. By with holding the method, its no longer donating, it's close sourcing ala apple, microsoft, etc. Zero offence to that guy, id just really love to "own" MY phone. Can someone PLEASE help? pass the word? anything? a peep?

If you don't mind the flash counter, you could simply use an Odin flashable (N7100) CWM tar, push the superuser zip of your choosing to /data/media/ (linked to /sdcard/) and install that from CWM.
What I know is that the rooting part is all fine and dandy, sure its a little harder than the rest, but its okay, it not too hard. The problem I keep reading is that the ROMS aren't truly compatible with the device, as data become atrociously slow. A method one, respected fellow, recommended we take was to flash a modem that is "for" our device variant. I say that because people reported bootloops due to it. Also there's a greater chance for our device to lose its IMEI number...not sure if these problems have been resolved. But yeah your problem really isn't rooting its the whole deal afterwards, again I am going by what I've read, I myself do not wish to take the chance of it becoming unusable, so i stay far until I got time to research more and some brilliant helpful mind comes along and solves all problems.

i think thats the issue, we just generally need someone more brilliant xD as per the "gentleman" that again, suggested using the donating kit, please re-read my post. whats this business about a flash counter????
darn shame still nothing regretting purchasing this phone completely due to this :/
I used the toolkit to root my N2 (Videotron T889v) without any problems. Just used the T-Mobile option since they are the same phone, just different software. The only difference is the modem from what I've read. Rooting does not change the modem that you currently have right now. If you decide you want to install a custom rom, then you may have to flash your modem back. I am currently using Jedi X rom without any problems and I can honestly say that it's faster than stock. He also provides a link with our modem so we can flash it after the install. All the T-Mobile software has been taken out, so you won't have to deal with any of it. Here are the links for the toolkit and rom.

Jedi X rom - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987634
There are 2 Jedi Roms available. Jedi X has the multi-window function working but no wifi calling. I believe the other is called Jedi Master and that one has wifi calling but no multi-window. I'm not sure if the wifi calling is a T-Mobile thing but I never installed that rom and can't really give much more info on it. In the end, you can always go back to stock if you're not satisfied. You can find a copy of your stock rom at sammobile. I would suggest making sure it's still available before doing anything.
As for the OP, this is my first time dealing with a flash counter although not my first time rooting. The flash counter is some type of software that Samsung puts in their phones to be able to tell if you have "tampered" with the phone's software. From what I've noticed, when you put your phone in the "download" state and install anything, that triggers the counter to rise. If you send your phone to Samsung for service and the counter is not 0, they will deny service since you would have broken your warranty. There is a program called Triangle Away that will return your counter back to 0, should you need to return the phone to Samsung. Although in my case it would only take it back down to 1 using their instructions. I finally got it back to 0 by adding an extra step. From what I've read, I think it depends on the kernel that you're using. Here is the link for the program.

I'm not an expert on any of this, just trying to help. I can say that I've rooted, unrooted and reset my flash counter back to 0 along with my stock Videotron rom.
Good luck

so you flashed the modem that ptmr3 provided for the t889v along with his jedi x rom and all good is good? no signal issues ? you get hspa+?
First Post:
I'm on Wind Mobile T889v Note 2. And I cant wait for this phone to get rooted so that I can run debian or whatever have you full blow linux desktop experience on my phone.
The current limited version of android on its own is too limiting for the processing beast that this phone is.

That is correct. Never had any issues whatsoever. Always get full signal strength, no disconnections and overall great service. As long as you flash after the rom, you will get your modem back. To be honest, the rom itself has never changed my modem, I always just flash it in case it's just reporting it as an error. In the directions it states that it will change it but I always check it and it has remained the same every time.
you mean by letting bootup and set up first then go back to twrp or cwm? and then flash the modem...my exams are done hoping to do it by tomorrow.

After you flash the rom (if you're flashing Jedi) you need to let it sit for 10 minutes on the first boot up (after the android logo, just use the reboot option after the 10 minutes). Once you've booted up and finished your setup, just go back into cwm or twrp and flash the modem.
how did you reset the flash counter with triangle away? it doesnt seem to work on my 889V

[Q] wind note 3 with t-mobile roms?

so before i go flashing any new roms that come out for this thing, i need to know, is this phone like the S3 was (and many others i think) where i can flash any rom that is made for T-Mobile onto the wind phone? what about roms for rogers/bell/telus, as the model number and baseband number for the phone is all the same (SM-N900W8 is the model, baseband is N900W8VLUBMI5). i know that the Tmobile note has a number ending in MI7 and then the two numbers right after the N900 are different, but those two numbers, i was told, are maybe for something to do with country code and shouldn't really matter?
please help me figure this out, as i'm sure lots of other wind or other canadians are wondering the same thing.... got my phone rooted and flashed with TWRP and am just waiting to find out if i can flash the darthstocker mod onto my brand new phone, but i don't want to risk screwing it up if i can't
thanks for any and all help

How do I do that? Do I have to pull it off of my phone? Is there a way to extract my phone's stock Rom to my computer so it is Odin flashable?
Is flashing a Rom while keeping my kernel something even somewhat straightforward?

Just make sure the rom you're flashing doesn't include a custom kernel (most of them dont, just be careful though). To answer your second question, no you cant make a odin image, but you can use the official one (find it in your carriers section)
The carrier one is mitt available yet, otherwise I wouldn't be asking if I can pull my own. Can you pull the one off your phone using terminal emulator or anything else?

[Q] Bootloader unlock and versions

I've read that the att version of this has a locked bootloader. I've also skimmed and read there are different versions of the bootloader for this phone as well.
My question is that I'm going to try to buy one off ebay but I want to make certain that I can root and install custom roms and kernels. I don't care about warranty info so thats no problem. However can you root on any bootloader or only the old one? If there is any info on this I'd to read about it. I just don't want to buy an updated phone and not be able to do anything with it like I did my optimus g pro which is not properly unlocked. Because if the bootloader effects this then I'll have to ask selllers what version it has and they likely won't know. I also read there are different modems and such with this. I just want to make sure i have total control over this phone unlike some that haven't been hacked thoroughly.
So if anyone wants to call me a noob and direct me towards a thread here I would gladly appreciate it.
The T-Mobile version DOES NOT have a locked bootloader, only Knox. Make sure you get an SM-N900T if you don't like locked bootloaders. The AT&T version is labeled SM-N900A, verizion is SM-N900V, and sprint is SM-N900P. All except the SM-N900T (and the Canadian SM-N900W8) have locked bootloaders.
Rather than start a new thread, I got a note3 in the mail. I know its an n900t but i don't know anything else about it yet.
my question is, I've seen a few things that say hlte and hltetmo. I'm researching how to do this stuff so I kinda know about it when the phone gets here. My question is, Ive seen this on the cyanogenmod website and twrp website.
Whats the difference? if any? I assume the tmo versions are for our phones, but if the regular hlte work then why the "split" in versions?
also what is generally the "best" most compatible recovery? I've seen cwm, philz cwm and twrp. I was just wondering if someone could just tell me which is the most stable
I just got the phone so i'll be looking into whats the best but if anyone has any suggestions for my previous post I'ld greatly appreciate it
I suggest avoid 'hlte' and always choose 'hltetmo'. 'hlte' might be the international version and with some things, like custom Recovery, it will cause boot-loops on the SM-N900T. When you see something contradicting what I just wrote assume it to be true for only that thing.

Another carrier's rom on Sprint Note 4

Ive done a lot of reading in regards to this. almost every place I read says other roms should flash on device not of those carriers. reason im investigating this is because CM for sprint has all the sms issues. and after reading through all the tmo roms im not seeing anyone mention sms issues. every time I try to flash another carriers rom it reads that they are carrier specific and fail. is there a way I can make another carriers rom flash to sprint. my device is unlocked, though im using a sprint sim for lte and from what im reading also, its just a matter of an apn setting for sprint, and/or a radio flash for sprint. anyways, comments?

I wouldn't flash another carriers roms. it can make your phone brick and just a paper weight. other carriers have different settings and files that our phone doesn't..i don't know how to explain it better but I don't recommend it

That is kind of unfortunate if that's the case that SMS doesn't work right out of the gate on Sprint CM ROM's then. While I have gotten used to it, it does get annoying after a while having to reconfigure using the *#*#4636#*#* method every time.
I have tried to flash a few other carrier based ROMs via TWRP but they typically fail anyways (which is probably a good thing). I don't think I've ever actually successfully flashed another carrier based ROM through TWRP.

You can't just flash a tmobile rom on this device. It sounds like to me you need to get your phone unlocked to use tmobile sim. I would suggest http://www.idoneapps.com to sim unlock your phone.
I have no idea what you mean by password screen. What firmware are you on? How did you root your phone? Did you turn off reactivation lock?
I can try to help you but i need to know more detail of your problem. And do understand I'm limited on time i spend here. I'll check back when i can.

Rooting Quetion

I just purchased a Galaxy Note 4 in mint condition, because I'm not happy with my S 7 Edge, so this will be my daily driver, a I can't stand not having a rootable phone.. Ya this is a few yrs old, but it seems like it still has roms available.. I had a Verizon Note 4 and used the international roms, and still have them... Was there any issue with rooting after it went to 6.0 Marshmellow? I believe this phone will come shipped with it..
No issues I've ever heard of. Just flash twrp with Odin. Then flash supersu. Assuming from your post count you need no help with that.
And of course, if you use international rom, you might need a data fix for your service.

Thanks, Ya I know how to root, but like anything else, I like to check from time to time, when dealing with another phone I have not had.. Ya I had a Verizon Note 4, but that was a pure pain in the aers.. LOL. IfI would have checked before buying the S 7 Edge, I would not have spent the money... Ya I still have some files for the international rom Dr. Keaton, I used for the Verizon Note 4 and also still have the data fix.. But I'm thinking of trying one of the many roms just for Sprint. Thanks looking forward to getting this phone in my hands around the 31 of this month..

Supposedly sometime before Christmas, which should be very soon, a lot of people are anticipating the arrival of @tx_dbs_tx N7 port rom. He's suppose to release it soon. He only releases very stable roms. Im sure it'll be very great.
But until then, if you like high customizable rom, you should try Dtux rom here on sprint thread. And if you like aosp, we have cm14 working pretty damn good and stable. It's on the verizon thread but works for all.
Enjoy your new old note 4, still the best phone money can buy.

I don't use sprint service, but I would definitely setup and activate phone on pure stock, make sure everything works.
Then once you install twrp, I'd also make a complete stock backup (at least boot, system, efs, modem). Or use something like Flashfire by chainfire to backup partitions. Especially all the EFS partition. Keep it somewhere for safe keeping.
I don't know what kind of modding your going to do, but having a working backup is very helpful.
Then you can do what you want. But yes activate on pure stock, cause that's gonna setup your efs partition correctly and other stuff. Plus some custom roms don't have the Sprint activation software in them.
Finally got my Note 4 it is activated, but need a new sim, because the one Best buy sold me is not compatible. Now my question this one comes with 5.1.1 N910PVPU4C0G5. Is the root method for this the same as arron answered in post 2. Just checking..
I do not see a TWRP for the Note 4 other than the edge, what is the deal.

If you follow the Note 4 Qualcomm path: trlte, you'll find the one for Sprint Note 4.
https://dl.twrp.me/trltespr/twrp-3.0.2-0-trltespr.img.tar
The one above is for Odin flashing in download mode. Use the AP slot but uncheck auto reboot in Odin options. You'll need to wait for your success, 0 fail then pull USB and battery and wait at least 30 seconds. If your initial boot after TWRP flash isn't recovery, you'll end up with stock recovery when you boot there later. It won't stick.
Keep in mind that root methods are same for both lollipop and marshmallow but updating will remove root in most cases, especially using suggested methods. With that in mind, get to the right update before you root. If you're flashing a custom ROM, you don't have to root first; custom ROMs include root.
As already mentioned, make your appropriate backups.
