[Q] TAB S 8.4 screen issue - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday I bought a tab S 8.4,
I found the LCD have black spot when displaying white or grey colour, it is normal? thanks for help.

Sorry i cannot see any problems from that photo as it`s just too low quality, I even inverted it in an photo app and zoomed in, and could see nothing, but i do believe you.
The 8.4" Tab S has been reported to have a few problems with the display, but it`s very rare, just get it replacement or a repair.
Below is a link to the 8.4" screen thread, but the last post was in February.

How to know IF AMOLED OR SLCD?!

Hi.
Before anything. I don't have the original screen of this DESIRE.
I have the phone, I know it works because I can use Screencast with it and it makes sounds when I turn it on. It works 100%.
But since I don't have the original LCD I don't know If I have to replace it with an AMOLED LCD or with SLCD screen.
1-. These are not interchangeable, right?
2-. S/N is SH08GPL03124 P/N is 99HKZ041-88 , it's PB99200 T8181 EU Desire.
Best Regards.
For me it says on the box.

Have you got the box? If it's amoled it will be written on it. I doubt a slcd could fit an amoled and viceversa, so even if the screen has been replaced it will still be of the same kind it was shipped with. If you can't find the box then you can still tell wether it's amoled or not by simply looking at something black on the screen: if it's amoled black colour isn't displayed, so it's the same as when it's turned off. Otherwise if you have a slcd black will look less intense, more bright.

Sadly I don't have the boy either...
I have the phone disassembled if it helps.
http://antondnagy.wordpress.com/2010/08/23/how-to-tell-if-your-htc-desire-has-slcd-or-amoled-screen/
This is how I test if my desire was amoled or SLCD. Firstly we must understand one of the amoled's feature which is "True black". This means the black color displayed on screen is extremely strong.
So, go to your room at night and switch off your lights. Click on settings page. You should see like as if the white texts are floating on air with a slight tinge of your hand's figure. Since the settings page, applications menu page is pure black, the blackness must be strong enough that it will blend in with pitch dark.
On SLCD however, its a different story. If you try SLCD with the above scenario, you can see a back ground lighting effect. You cant miss it. And the black color is not as strong as AMOLED's. Colors on AMOLED are more vibrant and strong compared to SLCD. However on SLCD, pictures look sharper because pixels are more dense per dot.
There is a youtube video that demonstrates exactly what I explained above. Placing two HTC desire (one AMOLED , and one SLCD) side by side for comparison. Search in youtube for AMOLED vs SLCD OR place "d5daNfccSiA" on the youtube link replacing the text after ?v=
Thanks for the answers...
I don't have the box and I don't have the screen of the phone! It was cracked and the last user removed it and dropped it to the trash.
Is there any way to know with only the serial number or manofacture date?
Best Regards.
Yes there is, if your device is manufactured before 27 July 2010, and if you did not purchase it as 2nd hand but from a retail store.. it is most likely that your device is AMOLED.
Read HTC announcement : here. HTC stopped using AMOLED in their phones and was announced on 27th July 2010. However it will take some time for retail stores to finish their old AMOLED stocks before selling the newer SLCD stocks. You can estimate from here...
Hope this helps answer your question
Put a drop of water on the screen to magnify the pixels. If you can see pink "teeth" around the edges of the pixels then your display is AMOLED. These are what cause the AMOLED screens to have a pink-ish hue to them.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 blacks/viewing angles

Hi everybody.
I just wanted to ask how do you find blacks and viewing angles on the Tab Pro 8.4?
I got mine yesterday and I'm not sure if my unit is faulty.
When I view it directly it has a weird looking gray/brown light coming on the top right corner when that area is supposed to
look black (at least blue). When I watch for example youtube videos it's easily visible because of the black bars.
The viewing angles on my unit are also quite awful when showing blacks.
I downloaded an all black image, see pictures. dropbox.com/sc/xfnqxwqz5u96rqt/vcp3Pqnzcn
dropbox.com/s/ky5e6ygz9pe8ora/20140402_232505.jpg
Hope that someone can post their pictures of the Tab Pro 8.4's blacks.
I am afraid I can't post pictures as my camera on my phone is knackered, but I don't have the same issue, looks faulty I am afraid matey :crying:
Thanks on the reply
I exchanged it (it head a dead pixel also haha).
Now waiting for the new one to arrive, really curious if it will have the same
issue.

Moto Z Play - Light Bleeding SuperAmoled screen

Just bought a new Zplay 1 week ago. I noticed on dark (not total black) colors that my top right screen corner is a bit brighter that the other parts of the screen. This brightness expands from right too to the middle. My question: is it fixable? Should i ask for a replacement device from Motorola's service (will they accept it?) or stick with this device and live with that? From previous experience from other services, usually i got the older phone back in worst condition than it was before. Anyone else with same problem?
I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.
Btw, fantastic device :fingers-crossed:
Amoled displays cannot have backlight bleeding since they have no backlight. Try downloading a pure black image, turn your brightness to maximum (no auto brightness) and see what you get. If you can still see something, then you might have a defective oled display. Motorola customer service might try to turn you down with the usual "Back light bleed is totally normal (it is normal on IPS LCDs to an extent)", since they more than likely dont know the difference between an IPS LCD and an AMOLED.
Or you could try turning up your brightness to maximum and just activate moto display and see if you can see anything.

On pure blacks i see nothing. The display is perfect. On the other hand i get to see a difference on other colors, mostly darker greys, for example on Chrome's empty tab panel where the color is a bit gray, there the problem can be seen. I'm don't know if this is natural or not. I will upload some pics to get an idea
Probably burn in on the screen from your status bar.. Also check the nav bar area too

Could be screen temp issue. Maybe wasnt calibrated correctly.
Id suggest get a screen test app , bring up a white color and see if that side has a yellow tint. If so its a color temp issue or also could be color distortion. Get a new one.

Today i sent it back to the store for a service check. They said if there is any issue with the screen i will get a new one or a refund. The thing is, i don't realy trust the technicians. Most of them are crappy

Good news, they gave me back the money. I will go for a new one.
My moto z plays dispay is slightly on the warmer side (whites are not pure white, a bit of yellowish). Initially i haven't noticed this but when compared this with redmi note 3 then i can see the difference where redmi note 3 colours are more vibrant. Is it normal? Or some issue with the screen?
I just checked m display and it's full black like the deep space, which was obvious since is an AMOLED display and all black pixels turn off to not show anything when they are black.
Ur Moto-Z seems like it was a LCD version lol! Good u get ur money back.

This is my go to app for testing screens, white and grey. Grey is usually the easiest to tell issues on with an amoled. This showed the terrible G-flex 2 panels weakness (greys were horrible on that screen)

Check ur display with total black background...not grey
Amoled usually checked with black background..& see it in dark invirment if any light visable ..if any light visable than ur display is faulty...
AMOLED displays always has to be TOTAL black, since there is not lamp providing light like in LCD and LED panels.
Obviously, there is a problem with the screen. If it does not affect the use, it does not matter, but if you can not accept such a screen, you can replace a new moto z play screen by yourself. This is a maintenance tutorial for moto z play screen. You can watch this to learn how to repair your moto z play.
Probably a defective model you got. Great you got the refund.

S4 mini i9195 and true black amoled

Hi,
I'm wondering if the s4 mini has true black screen values when in total darkness. Mine seems to be a faint glowing gray when showing black colors. On my S4 (the big one) black is truly black, my Note 3 had this as well. Now i'm wondering if this is because at one point my s4 mini's screen was replaced, and i got a bad screen, or has samsung used older amoled screens like the one on the S3? What are your screens like? Also, has the VE (i9195i) edition updated the screen? I can only see the issue when in a totally dark room, under normal light i can't detect it. Would like to know, cause i love reading at night
the s4 mini was one of the first to use a s-stripe technology if i remember correctly and that is superior than the pentile on the other devices you have and most other Samsung phones as of late.. that is except for burn in and degrading. The screen on my 9195 had screen burn in within months of owning it and after the first year had a solid yellow tint permanently on it. Oled degrades fast and maybe that what you're finally noticing?
I do not notice a yellow tint, just a faint glow in the dark, as if there is a backlight active.
I have 2 screens here, from I9192 and I9195 and both don't display true black
Ok, thanks for confirming this. Anyone with a i9195i (ve) here? I reckon they probably used the same screens.

I have rebuilt all models, they use the same(ish) screens. the ribbon cables are different but the displays appear to be the same.

Tab S4 : backlight question.

Hi there,
I just bought an S4. I have a problem with the backlight. With a black background, I see that the backlight is not homogeneous.
As I am a new user, the forum forbids me to post pictures / external link.
But there are pictures here:
For example with Chrome, when all tabs are closed :
balloy.free.fr//images/divers/S4_Bk_scr1.jpg
Or with BluOS app :
balloy.free.fr//images/divers/S4_Bk_scr2.jpg
On the other hand, I do not see the problem when the tablet displays Samsung boot screen, or that it displays videos (tested with Youtube).
Do you also have this behavior?
Thank you,
Regards
Laurent
Amoled screens do not have backlight.
Amoled displays do not have a backlight but uniformity varies between units. See:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s3/help/screen-uniformity-how-compare-replace-t3669657
Yours indeed seem pretty bad to me. If it bothers you, I'd try exchanging it though quality control feels like playing the lottery. However these things are too expensive to be unhappy with something as fundamental as the display.
Yeah any oled screen you have the risk of getting one that's not uniform . I don't think any are 100 percent perfectly uniform. But if it's really noticeable then I would exchange Iy

That looks shagged exchange it, that seems like an lcd display, as that’s how they behave when black or dark images are displayed. It’s nasty send it back asap!

Hello
Thanks all for you replies.
The service technician said it was not an anomaly. I spoke a lot. He finally proceeded to the exchange. :victory:
The anomaly is less visible on the new tablet, but it is far from perfect, compared to my old Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition.
I keep it, because, expect the screen quality, it is (for me), the perfect tablet,
