* I am not responsible for bricked devices, displays not working, or your phone melting *
Now with that out of the way, hello! Welcome to my first guide-thingy. As it is my first, I apologise if there is a mistake or if I have left something out, but this process is exactly the process I have used.
Recently I've had a few people ask me about changing their phone's resolution and DPI as said in my signature, so I thought I'd write up a guide for people to use! The ROM I've done this on is the BlissPop AOSP ROM but the process should be similar for most if not all other Custom AOSP-Based ROMs. I am UNSURE if this process works on the stock ROM or any stock-based ROMs.
Prerequisites:
- Root access
- Root File Manager & Explorer (Such as Root Browser or ES File Explorer)
* Root Browser: https://tinyurl.com/aytbttu
*ES File Explorer: https://tinyurl.com/cd4u27q
- NOMone Resolution Changer
* https://tinyurl.com/kjg63jn
- OPTIONAL (For Multi-DPI Patch) Latest AROMA (Now known as Open) GApps Package
* http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/pa-gapps-continuation-t3098071
Lets get started!
Firstly, the Multi DPI Patch. It's not essential but allows apps to be properly resized to match your custom DPI, and in the latest Google Apps package it has an option when installing to install a multi-DPI patch for people who are using custom resolutions on their phone. Like me, I'm not using 2560x1440 (Stock 1440p resolution) I'm using 1920x1080 (1080p) resolution @ 370 DPI.
Changing your Resolution & DPI
1. Download NoMone Resolution Changer from the Play Store above (It's free) and grant root access
2a. Open a root file manager (Like Root Browser or ES File Explorer (You have to enable root-access for ES) ) and navigate to the /system folder on internal storage. Find your build.prop at the bottom. Now, you're going to want to create a backup of this file before we do anything as it defines how things work on the phone, so create a copy and move it somewhere safe from being wiped (Like an external SD card)
2b. Click on build.prop and open with a root file browser
2c. Find the line under the #ADDITIONAL_BUILD_PROPERTIES section that says ro.sf.lcd_density=xxx and change 560 (default DPI) to something like 430 if you want the font and stuff to stay the same size or 370 to make it smaller and hit save, grant root-save access if required. Then, open the file with another file manager to verify it's saved and changed. Adjust the DPI to something that you like, but be cautious as not all DPIs work properly (I only know of 370 & 430 that have worked for me). This step may vary depending on how your ROM sets out your build.prop.
3. Set your desired resolution in NOMone Resolution Changer (Mine is 1080x1920, remember to do it backwards so 1080x1920 not 1920x1080 otherwise your phone's GUI will be landscape and not portrait, and will go off the screen)
3b. Set your desired DPI to match the DPI you put into your build.prop file and hit apply (Grant root access if requested). The app will apply your settings and change your screen to match the new settings. It will then prompt you if you'd like to keep these settings, hit yes or no. If you hit yes, it will give you an option to change back the settings after a minute so you can see what the phone looks like at that setting.
*This next step only applies if your ROM has an option to manage the DPI setting itself, like BlissPop does, otherwise skip it*
4. After you've applied your custom resolution and DPI, go to Settings (Yes everything will be massive-sized don't worry) -> Display & Lights -> Scroll down to the bottom, hit advanced Display Settings, and change the LCD Density DPI to match the one you set in your build.prop and NOMone app.
5. Hit yes to reboot or reboot your phone if not prompted.
6. You're done! Your phone should reboot and apply your new resolution and DPI changes.
I have attached some screenshots showing off the BlissPop & Facebook UI at 1920x1080 Resolution & 370 DPI, as well as an example change in the NOMone Resolution Changer App. Lowering the Resolution and DPI is beneficial to those who want to squeeze more stuff onto their screen (it enables lots more text on the screen that isn't really big.) As well as gamers (The lower resolution doesn't strain the GPU as hard.)
If you have any issues, just delete the build.prop you edited from the /system folder in TWRP and copy over the original one you backed up and put it in the /system folder.
Known issues caused by this guide:
- Boot animation may stretch when booting.
- Recent app previews will also be larger for some unknown reason, this is a small side effect however.
Hope this helped!
Now ...again...me....you forgot to mention borked gigantic recents and borked bootanimation on boot.....you should add it to issues list...IMHO

I've used this application to lower resolution on my G3 to 1080p but found that the small text and other stuff was blurred because it's disproportionate to the amount of pixels, since 720p would be a more accurate number to downscale to on a 1440p screen (1/2).
Do you notice this "fuzziness"? I forget exactly which DPI I set it to when I did go down to 1080p, but the other thing I realized was that the performance gain was marginal. I did not do long-term battery testing with this, though. So the verdict is still out on whether or not there is any gain there.

you might not gain much or if any juice on battery....but...performance boost is noticeable on.my side...I forgot how it feels at 1440p ...and switched to for a moment....oh gosh....why do apps take longer to open?....back to 1080p and it flies again...
Oh...you must have set too low dpi to get blury text...I don't even know how that looks like...and if you'd change it to 720p your dpi would be around 220 or something ......

So I used the recommended settings of 1080p and 370dpi and the blur is minimized but not completely gone. Bearable, though.
I'll be testing out some other performance things and more long-term battery savings. Thanks again for the write-up. Hopefully it will help with people willing to try out different resolutions and DPI's.

Sorry, but this is the kind of thing that cannot be shown on a software level. Screenshots will not work.
The images and text is just not as crisp because since it's not 1:1 with the pixels it will naturally display fuzzy. This is unavoidable but can be lessened by using better ratios (ideally 720p, but that would just be too low) and different DPI settings. If you do not see this yourself then you may lack the eyesight. Again, it's not very noticeable and the positives may very well be more beneficial than having a perfect 1:1 ratio.

You could try going to 1080p @ 430 DPI. This makes the text similarly sized to the default 560 DPI, only on lower resolution. If you did this, the GPU wouldn't have to work as hard, and your text would still be the original size
But yeah it's worth playing around a bit. I haven't noticed any fuzziness at all at 370 DPI, and I do a lot of reading on my phone.

If you lower the resolution on any lcd screen made for a specific resolution it will make things fuzzy. You can even do this on your computer monitor.
Everyone should expect this as it is not 1:1, but I still consider it pretty useful.

you really have to look very very very closely to notice anything IMHO
And If that was written somewhere...most people will fall under mass hysteria and take it as granted .....that's a fact....i'm enjoing my huge screen like I did before on 1440p ...it makes no difference for me and side by side comparison with my co-worker's G3 which is all Stock except rooted(by my advice)....makes no difference at all....none, 0,....he didn't notice that I changed anything except THE Beautiful Rom and pure raw power against his Stock G3...so...don't complicate to much....

[MOD] Hacked Camera.APK for better audio quality, usage with any battery life & MORE!
Final Update-
Some people have been asking for sourcecode/instructions, so once more, this is the method I used, all credit to Rafalense.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10980448&postcount=268
Those of you wanting me to reupload the APK's, I'm sorry, I don't have them stored anymore, and I wouldn't put them up even if I did. They're based on ANCIENT firmware revisions, and whilst I can appreciate you still would like the functionality somehow, I'm not interested in taking on the project again at this time. Thank you very much for your continued use and desire for my work though, it's very flattering.
I won't be actively developing or supporting this anymore because of it's defunct nature. If you want something similar, I highly recommend the lgCamera app, which has a far better implementation of improved bitrates (select whatever bitrates you want in a menu.) You can get lgCamera on the market- I highly reccomend it.
Anyone who wants to pick up this project can feel free to discuss here or make a new thread, as you please. If you do, please include the link to the guide by Rafalense, as it was the basis for this mod and will doubtlessly be of use to someone.

In light of my new student status, and since my student loan doesn't even cover my accommodation... I have made a donate link.
If you use the mod regularly, please consider donating, it would really help me out. Don't worry if you can't though, the mod will always be free for all to use.
Thanks for all the support-

Hey folks-
It's with great pleasure that I'm releasing a hacked Camera.apk for you all today! This is my first android mod, so be gentle
Info-
The apk replaces the stock Camera.Apk in the Galaxy S II (or Samsung Captivate!), and has the following features-
- Allows use of the camera & camcorder at any battery life
- Records Audio in 192kbps/44.1Khz quality (CD Quality) rather than stock (64kbps/16khz quality)
- Increased Video Bitrate in 1080 and 720p modes* (See 2nd post for info and download link for this version)
- Optional No Sounds versions (for Standard and Highbit versions!). All of the features, None of the noise! Yes, even the autofocus noise is gone!
- HyperX-'s SuperHighBit version now available (See 2nd post for info and download link for this version)
I have left the settings for the 320x240 and 176x144 resolution modes as stock, so they will be the same size and with the same audio. This is to ensure video messages are kept within the filesize limits
Before/After Comparison (thanks robbiekhan)-

Additional info:
If you want to get rid of the shutter sound, create a file in /data called local.prop and add the line "ro.camera.sound.forced=0" and restart your phone. This removes both the shutter sound and the focus sound when your phone is on silent, but keeps the sound when it's not on silent. - llBlackenedll
Install Guide:
1) Root & install a file manager which lets you browse root
2) browse to /system/app, and rename your Camera.apk to Camera.apk.bak and your Camera.odex to Camera.odex.bak (for use as a backup to restore from)
3) Unrar my APK (password: ) and copy it over to /system/app.
4) Rename it Camera.apk
5) Close the file manager and run the Camera app from the main menu
6) IF the app fails to run, or the shortcut is missing, go back to the /system/app folder and try to install it (tap it in root explorer then "install"). This step is only a fallback, do NOT do this if it works already at step 5.
7) Enjoy!
ADB Install Guide- See 2nd post!
This mod was tested on my own Galaxy S II with KE2, KE7, KG1, VillainROM and CognitionROM firmwares.

Was your battery very low? I know if the battery is VERY low the brightness on the whole phone dims completely, but this isn't something I can fix. If not, it's an odd problem, I can't seem to replicate it... mine retains the brightness it is set to. Can you try enabling the "Auto Brightness" in settings (Display -> brightness -> automatic brightness) and see if it works better then? If not you may have to resort to enabling "outdoor visibility mode" in the camera settings to use it until I can replicate it to fix it.

Robbiekhan hit the nail on the head, increasing the bitrate doesnt necessarily increase the quality by a margin that is worth having... especially with the associated filesize increase. I managed to get it working at 32Mpbs bitrate, but the quality didnt warrant doubling the amount of space it used up.

As much as I'd like to, I'm not sure how to go about it. Did the camera app work before at those resolutions? I don't imagine it did, since I didn't change any of the graphics... which means its crashing because of something else. Probably needs a graphic redraw to suitable sizes for the resolutions, but that's quite time consuming and I can't really commit to something like that right now. Sorry.

Yeah but I did it first Mine was ready a few days ago, I just waited for a reply from soraxd as a courtesy before releasing publicly.
The method is the same for changing the video settings as it is audio, but I felt when testing that the difference in quality was not worth the difference in filesize. When I shot a video at 1080p with 36Mbps (that was the max I could use without the phone crashing) it looked virtually identical to the original one, but used up twice the space. If enough people really want it (though I don't see why) I will happily add the functionality to this apk, so you can enjoy the other features as well.
Hope this helped-

For now I switch density when I use my camera properly, np.

Edit: My bad, wrong password...
Hi, I done a few searches for this, but couldn't find an answer. The Note 10.1 2014 along with the Nexus 10 (both 2500x1600) leave borders when connected to a 1080p TV/monitor via HDMI. This (at least to my understanding) is because they are outputting at a ratio of 16:10 where HD is 16:9. Is there a way to solve this without using some sort of zoom/cropping on the TV side? My guess is the only way to get a perfect image is to have the tablet send a 1080p signal and probably create borders on the tablet as they only allow mirroring. On the plus side this would allow them to run smoother as they would be pushing far fewer pixels.
I've not used Miracast, but am assuming it would suffer from the same problem?
Any info/help would be appreciated, thanks!
Trust my brain to kick-in "after" the last moment and think about searching for a resolution changer!

Anyone tested this , or found a non root solution.
I have the same issue with allshare cast
I wouldn't try the resolution changer or script thing if I were you. Apparently it doesn't like our device even when rooted. Someone a while back posted a thread which basically rendered the device useless because of the resolution changer and he had to flash stock firmware again or something to get it back to normal. I have the same issue with the black bars thing when using MHL and I couldn't find a solution for it anywhere for this device.
Thanks C2Q, guest we just have to sit tight and wait for updates. Devices with a resolution of 2500x1600 should be at the top of their lists especially considering the significant performance increases you could expect from dropping the resolution to 1920x1080.

I tried the 1920x1080 and got stuck in a bootloop To fix it I had to use adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.setting*s/databases/settings.db from TWRP, open the DB in SQLite, remove the 'freeze resolution' entries in the table and push it back. It was a good learning exercise but I don't want to do it again !
Thanks for the warning. That would definitely had been the first thing I would have tried after rooting. I'm sure you've saved few of us.
Hey there,
Daki from www.androidkosmos.de published a short article that the resolution can be changed to 4k by default (so Kudos to you man). As it's in German and not exactly step-by-step, I felt like posting a short how-to.
Step 1: Turn on Developer Options.
- Settings -> About -> Click 5x on Build-Number
Step 2: Allow USB debugging
- Settings -> Developer Options -> USB Debugging [X]
Step 3: Open ADB, (always without the " ofc!)
- Type "adb devices", click on "allow request" on your phone
Step 4: Change Resolution and DPI
- Type "adb shell"
- Type "wm size 2160×3840"
- Type "wm density 807 (after a little tinkering, I found 721 to be the best DPI. Yea, really, 721)"
There is no information so far as to how battery life is affected!
Back to default:
Repeat steps 1-3
Step 4: Change Resolution and DPI (back to default)
- Type "adb shell"
- Type "wm size 1080×1920"
- Type "wm density 403"
Best
IlluX
Further to this, if you're a weirdo like me and want everything reset rather than a set value due to your own personal OCD, you can use "wm size reset && wm density reset" :good::fingers-crossed::silly:

No idea, typo maybe? Tested it back and forth, not a single issue to report.

I don't have a Z5P so I can't guarantee but I'm quite confident it does.
Haha look at that. Nice and thanks for share
I also published on talk.sonymobile.com forum.

How's the battery for you guys? When I do this to my Z5P, the battery doesn't even last a few hours

Thanks. I checked my default density before changing it with the command "wm density" which exported 420, not 403 like OP said .

The draining is very poor, not an impact so remarkable. The issue is about the themes, e.g. in the Agree Bird I have now when I asnwer to a call, the dialer disappear and it becomes a nightmare eheh
the phone app is not working correctly after change to 4k. phone app force close if you try to make a call and dialer disappear
got the aame result did not see any different on battery anyway, i think it is just mock, the desity shown in cpu z is same. but resolution is making at 4k in cpu z. need to change back due to phone app force closing though

I heard somewhere that the phone app will work properly if you use 1440x2560 resolution, not sure about DPI though. I think it was Z5 Premium thread.
aren't the ui supposed to be 4k unlike the z5 p? or did they changed it?

They said during CES or something similar that you would be able to change the resolution in settings, so you could run 4K all the time if you wanted to. But that isn't the case on the phone right now.
Either the people from Sony that made the claim had their information wrong or Sony changed their mind afterwards. Either way, it sucks that you can't control your resolution in the settings.

Hopefully it comes in a future update, maybe there were some issues with certain apps in 4K. I wouldn't count on it happening but it's not completely off the table.
Has someone used this for a while and can tell us about eventually battery effects of this? Does the phone app force closes etc?
Is there any way to port over options to adjust the screen resolution I'm surprised this tablet does not have it already the tab S2 had the options in the settings to lower the resolution to save power and higher it when watching videos. I was wondering if there was any way to put this over and install it on the Tab S3 or if it has been done already. Thanks

I have a tab s2. I don't have those options lol
He's referring to the minimum screen width in developer options. It starts around 768 and I keep mine at 786. See image.

I keep mine at 1097. It makes things smaller and hence can fit more stuff in the same screen

Thanks, I also did this. Seems a great fit and seems to run faster too (though turning off the CPU limit probably helped)
How do you turn off the CPU limit ?
It's in settings - device maintenence
Press on the battery icon at the bottom
Choose Off

I'd also recommend adding Greenify and L Speed to the unmonitored apps section there too if you use em which you should
Anyone found a way to change the screen resolution for Games?
They look weird and compacted, almost as a 4:3 format, instead of 16:9
The stock 2048 x 1536 puts it in a really weird aspect ratio.
EDIT
NVM found this, it does the job
https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-game-tuner-update-removes-a-ton-of-useful-features/
Nope, while that sort of do the trick, but it doesn't produce a crisp image.
This works for me https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/samsu...msung-game-tuner-3-4-04-android-apk-download/
Set the Res to 100 percent in this apps settings
It's the only one unless you are trying to tune pubg mobile in which case there is a specific app for that ?
hello, i wanted to change my aspect ration to 4:3 to have a stretched resolution like pc on my whole phone
there is a app called easy dpi changer. It changes resolution, the only thing you get black bars (not stretched res).
is there any way to make it stretched instead of black bars?
here are some screenshot how it looks like after resolution is changed.
thanks
If you stretch 4:3 to fill the 20:9 screen you'll end up cutting off part of the display.. so I think it's not an option

I know it, but thanks for the tip anyway.
It needs root and I'm actually unrooted.
Other apps just works with adb, like P ixels:Resolution+DPI changer, in playstore.
(#com.tribalfs.pixels) if searched outside.
I think it also has more option than the one you mentioned.
