Can I run Android M on this thing ?
No. They have added code to the G4 to only run kitkat. Sorry. ??
Of course it will be capable of running.M

You can only run Donut on this device. Sorry.
Being capable of running it & manufacturers supporting it & providers pushing it out are all very different things.
Is this a serious question? I'm confused. Didn't we just get this phone? I came from the G3 and am so tired of hearing about full blown updates.. Especially before they're even released. You won't see M on here til you're already getting ready to get the G5.
Is M released already? I thought they were just talking about the development on the M article
You do know that Android M isn't out yet, and won't be until fall right?

I have M running on nexus 6, thought its possible on G4.
I'm thinking whether to upgrade, having M is a big thing. Can't really live with out of dated software.

M is a developer preview on the Nexus 6. The final M will be released around November and then manufacturers will release them for their phones probably around January or February next year. Nexus devices have the ability to run developer releases but not manufacturer phones.

That's the first time I've seen someone call Android 5.1 outdated. Kind of silly since it's about as new as it gets as far as official releases. I guess you'll be limited to Nexus devices and preview release software. The G4 is not for you.

Are you serious?
What you have in your hands is a developer preview, not even close to the real thing. I believe Google said they'd release another preview or two before the actual software is released.
We have guys over at the Huawei Ascend Mate 7 forums pining because they can't even get lollipop on their devices, and here you are saying you're not fully sure if the G4 is an upgrade because it isn't running software that isn't even close to being released yet.

I understand that the biggest problem here is the kernel, and that nobody cared to put in the required work for 4.3 since it brought absolutely nothing of importance. However, 4.4 brings a huge amount of new features, but most importantly, as many of you know, it has vastly improved support for lower-end devices, such as the HOV. I know that building a kernel is a huge amount of work, but I think that for a legacy device this cool, it's actually worth it. Will anyone actually go for it? khmhellboykhm
its not that nobody cared, people bought new phones and moved on
@bradthomas127 got 4.3 booting for the CDMA variant so I'm sure its possible! We will just have to be patient and see
I'm waiting on @cybervibin & @lilrob1213 to get it up and running and then i will steal it and post is as my own ROM just like i did with Carbon4.3
It's going to be a while before i'll even look into it, it will probably be another month before CM starts even releasing KitKat branches onto GitHub.
I've been watching all the trouble Lloir has been having on IRC trying to build 4.4 AOSP and i dont think this is going to be a easy process.
I have made a kitkat branch and have started doing some big clean up getting ready it.

It would have been good if Google made a demonstration of how Kitkat is capable with the lower end device, e.g. Gnex or the NexS.

I fear that is the case already. I am not seeing a lot of movement on the 4.4 ROMs out there, the threads are not that active, and it appears that hardware (GPU) is blocking real progress in allowing 4.4 to be stable on the GNex. I rolled back to CM 10.1.3 which has been rock-stable with good battery life and strong signal for now, and am under contract until June before I can upgrade without penalty.

Point taken, but my comment wasn't about patience, it was about volume. The traffic just appears to be less than in the heady days of JB, for instance. Fewer posts IMHO means more people moving to other devices. I hope I'm wrong!

While KitKat is said to be able to run on lower-spec devices, this doesn't mean every phone ever made will begin to receive updates, nexus or otherwise. Will the HTC Hero receive KitKat? What about the Evo 4G? It has 512mb ram, and should run it just fine. This update was created to get rid of Gingerbread from the entry level devices being sold in developing countries.

Doesn't even look like something that should be called LP 5.2, more like 5.1.2.
There were more design changes from JB 4.1 to 4.2, then L to M.

Also looking forward to a toro build. Luckily, its not my daily, so it doesn't have to work all the way.
I'm really thrilled for the new features coming with Android M but I would seriously prefer having stable systems instead of bleeding edge features. If you take Ziyan's cm 12.1 as an example, it's still beta but is really stable on my phone, just having some minor issues here and there... That's something you can work with, but sometimes devs declare there roms stable, even if you look at big companies they do it sometimes too, that's just a shame. If I don't need my phone for my everyday life, e.g. on weekends, I try to test some of the bleeding edge stuff, that's a process that has been working out pretty good so far.
I want to keep my galaxy nexus for year . It will be amazamazing it can run the latest version of android. I'm sure that the xda galaxy nexus developers will do this.
Android M for Galaxy Nexus is here:
http://www.tech.infysim.org/2015/10/16/android-m-for-galaxy-nexus-android-marshmallow-6-0-zmod-rom/
This is not a stable build yet, so proceed with caution.
No toro M yet? I am impressed with the compassion on this device. I really think the GNex is a great little device!!
Really dont understand why it takes so long for the update for a "flagship device"? Focusing on pushing more hardware without taking care of your existing customer's is bad PR IMO. I just want to try something new

Samsung probably already gave the rom to T-Mobile. T-Mobile then adds their stuff like wifi calling, VoLTE, advanced messaging, etc, then once they're done testing it for stability they push it out. So really it's not just samsung were waiting on.
Nexus comes stock with it. Google gave T-Mobile the firmware long ago.
We probably won't get an update until the s7 comes out, or worse case scenario when the new note and edge plus come out....sad but true

Yes they may have the Firmware from Google for the nexus but that doesn't mean it works with Samsung's phone. They will still have to test the modem and make sure it works well on their network. Still need to test stability with the firmware from Samsung.

That is for the unlocked model. Also, T-Mobile needs to add bloatware and test, which would take a few months probably.
I can never understand why people care about these mediocre updates sometimes, that even breaks the phone at times. When it comes it comes as long as it comes within a 6- 8 months of google releasing it im fine. The software on this phone is excellent now.

At this rate I expect to have swapped to an S7 Edge before the S6 Edge+ gets Marshmallow. Thank god for Jump! On Demand
A while back, we posted an article about how to sign up to beta test Android Marshmallow on the Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, and Galaxy Note 5 on select carriers. If you have an AT&T Galaxy S6 edge (SM-G925A), AT&T Galaxy Note 5 (SM-N920A), Verizon Galaxy S6 edge (SM-G925V), or Verizon Galaxy S6 edge+ (SM-G928V), you can visit here and sign up for the official beta. The good news is that it has started seeding for the Galaxy note 5 and we have a few screenshots from one of our readers.

For at least the AT&T Galaxy Note 5, they selected only 200 participants, it is unknown if other devices got more or less at this time. Our reader was emailed with the instructions to download the Samsung app which would then install the beta to his device. The Note 5 now has build number MMB29K.N920AUCU2BPB1 and the kernel version has a build date of today, February 2nd, meaning it was probably pushed late last night Korean time. The update size for the beta was just over a gigabyte at 1355.94 MB, so it is quite hefty.
is there a way to get the update file and sideload it?
Anyway I can sign up now?
How did people sign up that sucks we missed out.

It was on Reddit thread, someone posted a link there.
Would be fantastic if someone could provide those files or instructions for installing the beta that they received from Samsung...

Just got an update for Samsung Pay that makes it "M OS compatible" so maybe this is a hint that it's right around the corner..

I've been considering it for a while.. Just can't get myself to pull the trigger on it. I love the note 5 but I also love root and vanilla android. Lately battery has kind of sucked for me too.. But that's a story for another thread haha.

I had the 6P and came back to my Note 5 in about a month. All 3 that I had bent from no extra force other than having it in my loose front pocket by itself. And I always took it out before I sat down or bent over/down.
Not only that, the screen isn't as good or bright and I didn't think the camera was as good either. And rooting is overrated in this day and age. I got bored with it quick. Yes the phone is smooth, but it lacked too many features for me.
You may like it, but proceed cautiously is my advice.
I don't miss the amount of time I wasted rooting and flashing just to achieve instability and marginal benefits.

I tend to agree, but I did like having a nandroid backup, being able to backup and restore apps simply, adaway (adguard is ok, but have to disable to join my vpn), and simple things like volume music controls.
Did Samsung enable more options on the alarm clock? Specifically if you can adjust the snooze settings other than just turn it on or off.

Sounds like a job like mine, well not so much anymore. Used to "babbysit" servers.
