[Q] Easiest way to screen share - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am looking to set up a Tab S for my mother-in-law such that she can easily mirror the screen on a monitor/TV and use both a keyboard and a mouse via bluetooth so it becomes an easy to use desktop replacement.
If I use the Samsung HDMI cable, even with the power adapter plugged in, it does not simultaneously charge the device. Samsung have confirmed this.
I am therefore thinking of using sharecast/Samsung link or whatever it is called now. However, there is no way she's going to hunt around in settings to mirror the screen, so what would be the easiest way for her to place the tablet by the bug screen, automatically connect with the BT keyboard and mouse, AND mirror the screen to a Samsung smart TV?
I think the bluetooth should be automatic once the devices are paired? But I don't know how to do the screen mirroring in a VERY easy way!
Any suggestions much appreciated!!! I need the brownie-points with my mother-in-law!
Cheers!

You could try chromecast it is very easy to do:
Open the app
Open the menu pick cast screen
Tap a button and your done.
However it may or may not have the best functionality for what she wants or needs to do. For $35 it is a worth while investment to test if this will work out the best. It will allow charging while in use, you can use bluetooth accessories at the same time, and it is simple to setup even for the technology illiterate. However it is reliant on a good home wifi signal and even then there will be some screen lag using it as a wireless hdmi cable.
Also just remember that a tablet even a microsoft tablet is not really a desktop replacement and some concessions will need to be made if you want to use it as such.

I use a cheap mirrorcast dongle. To use... press the screen mirroring toggle in the notification panel, obviously tv has to be changed to correct hdmi input aswell.

Thanks for the fast reply! Does screen cast work with the Chromecast dongle and using the Tab S? I've read reports (maybe old) that it doesn't?

Yes - I considered this option too, but not all miracast dongles seem to be created equal! Which one did you use and was this casting from a Tab S?
Thanks for sharing your experience.

Yes, I have used it myself from the time I got my tab S (December 24) till a few days ago and it worked for me each time.

Just a cheap ezcast from ebay... all the guts of these are basically the same... and yes this was with tab s 8.4... miracast functionality is built into tab s so you don't have to use 3rd party apps. It works well enough for me to use net flix however not good enough for gaming...for general tablet use it works well.

[Q] USB Keyboard support

I have tried two different USB keyboards (Cherry evolution stream XT, Cherry G80-3000) but none of them seems to work.
Both keyboards are working when connected to a pc. The OUYA usb port recognizes my mouse. So I guess it has to be a software problem.
Anybody else encoutering similar problems or having an idea to solve this issue?
I didn't find a single thread where a corded USB keyboard didn't work. I have no other keyboard to test .

Even with the keyboard attached? Do you connect the keyboard before booting up?
I've been using the Asus keyboard from my pc with no issues. When connected there is always the option to enable and disable it.

I have had problems in this area as well. For me pulling the power, plugging in the keyboard, and then putting the power back seems to work a lot of the time. Sometimes it is just a matter of doing it a bunch of time until the keyboard is finally recognized. To me, this issue speaks to the build quality and software quality of the Ouya in general. Stuff like this makes the Ouya pain in the a** for the masses.

What about using the power button to initiate a real shut down before attaching the keyboard.
It seems the OUYA is not built using parts from a single manufacturer and that has a lot to do with inconsistent performance.

I tried everything mentioned in this thread at least a few times with the two different keyboards with no effect.
I pulled the cord, plugged both keyboards in and turned it on. Powered it off with the hardware button and pluged the keyboard in. Searched the options for any signs of a keyboard that is connected but just not activated.
I also tried different builts (there was an auto update). None seems to work.
This box is a pain in the a%&. I seem to have a very *****y ouya. XBMC is not working quite well too.

No. I tried using a hub as a fix but it didn't help.
I'm absolutely clueless.
I guess installing a custom rom or a bootloader is no option without a working keyboard. The OUYA seems to be a complete waste of time and money so far. Only crap games, worst "store"/rom ever, loud fan, controller with input lag and XBMC not working properly. Unfortunately people seem to have recognized how bad this thing is, where I live the resell value is free falling.

I am at a loss as well. I'm not sure how attached you are to your current install on the OUYA but you could try to sideload the latest OTA. I am pretty sure you can do all that without a USB keyboard attached via ADB. You could also fastboot CWM and see if it is recognized then. Just a couple shot in the dark idea but as if a mouse works, the USB port must be working.
I borrowed a logitech keyboard from a friend and it's working like a charm.
The problem seems to be "cherry only".
That sucks. Now I have to buy a new keyboard for this crapcube since my friend needs his keyboard.
Thanks for the advices to everyone.

[Q] Screen mirroring doesn't work?

Hello there,
I've tried on 2 tv's (Panasonic and Philips) and with one WiFi Display bought from ebay, and on all of them same problem. It connects then immediately disconnects with this error. Is something that should I do? I have a stock 4.4.4 rooted ROM.
Thank you.
Do you have an unlocked bootloader?
Sent from my D5503 using xda premium
No. I have the latest stock firmware with root and dual recovery.
i had problems with my lg tv too, but after like 5 times trying it simply worked...
there are several reasons why you cant conect to the tv, must check one by one
Trust me I've tried many many times , doesn't work. I mean it works, shows connected on the tv but after one flash of a second, bum, disconnected with that message. I've read on other devices that it might be because of the recovery or root, but I don't want to go that far with making the screen mirroring work.
did u unlock the bootloader? DRM keys if missing can do that
No. Locked bootloader. Latest stock firmware with root and dual recovery. That's it. Is yours working in screen mirroring?
Screen mirroring works on my Lg TV but it was lagging sometimes even for some 720p videos. So it's kind of working. Sadly don't know why this is happening.

Yea the same thing happening with my lg smart tv too
lag is ok but after sometimes it totally freeze and need to reconnect again
I'm really frustrated with this problem
Questions:
1.Is it hardware or software problem?
2.if it's a software problem then why sony isn't fixing this??
3.lastly is it happening only for z1c or other sony z series phones too???
The phone was bought in September from Vodafone then, a month ago bought by from the person who bought it brand new, so I'm 100% sure that it has a locked bootloader and it had never been unlocked. But just to be sure, how to check this? BTW my previous phone Xperia Z had sort of the same problem, screen mirroring wasn't working, no errors, just not connecting to the devices and that phone was bought by me brand new.
Sounds like DRM issue to me, I have a W9 and can't connect because I lost my keys, but given the glitchiness in operation it's not that much of a loss, I can still Throw to the TV though. Try THIS.

I have not got it working with my dongle either. A cheap miracast device.
The reason is probably the missing encryption functionality on those noname devices.
My dongle works just fine with another Android tablet. But not with Sony device. Some companies are just more concerned about piracy issues. Especially if they sell some media themselves...
I would call it a partially supported protocol implementation. On both ends. And there is no information about that when you buy it. But there is a plenty of advertisement on the function as such.
My z1 c has no problem with screen mirroring with samsung smarty tv, using it for two months no problem till today, but it is impossible to play games because tv shows every thing 2-3 second late. But screen mirroring is not that good for z1c's hd resolution because in fhd tv color looks totally washed out. I love throw feature more than screen mirroring. And one more thing i prefer i media share than sony's conventional through option because i can lock while.using i media share.
One problem z1c has that when we lock screen while using media server setting connection disconnects after some time same goes with throw.

[Q] Controller on Tab S 4.4.2 not working

Hi.
I have a problem with my Tab S 10.5. I can connect mouse or keyboard using OTG cable and it's work fine.... But when I connect my xbox 360 wired controller, it's not working. the Xbox ring is blinking yes but I can't do nothing with it.
I'm trying with GTA San Andreas and it's doing nothing...
Is someone have a solution ?
Thank you very much !
so I have been messing with trying to get the controller to work on the tab s 10.5 with no luck. here's what I found as a solution before. found it on xda
"xbox 360 wireless success
Thought about making a new thread about this but this looks as good as place as any to post. After many many trials and tribulations I have finally got my wireless xbox 360 controller to work I'll explain how. You have to have the xbox 360 wireless dongle to usb as well as a OTG cable to get this working properly. Somebody with a wired xbox controller might be able to use this method to get that working but I haven't tested it. This was done on the sm-t700 model (Tab S 8.4 WIFI) but I'm pretty sure it will work with any samsung tab s possibly other samsung models.
First there are two options,
Non root method but no analog sticks
Root method for full controller support.
For the non root method install this app USB/BT Joystick Center 2015 https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...bjoyfree&hl=en once installed look at the upper left corner of the app and touch the IME/Off button then just enable it on next screen. After that right below that button you clicked on there is a norm/hid search option click the NORM button. At this point it should recognize the controller and put a square box in middle of your screen click on that. Now it will give you the opportunity to map the buttons click on any button then click on your controller button to map it. It gives like a keyboard layout so just pick anything it dosen't really matter. I have tested this method with Drastic Ds emulator and worked for me just no analog stick control.
Root method. Alot more complicated be forewarned. First things first root using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/gala...nfire-t2881826 after root use a program I used titanium backup pro to freeze all 5 knox apps. Now you need to flash your kernal to this permissive kernal http://forum.xda-developers.com/gala...ernel-t2914628 after this use the same app from above USB/BT Joystick Center 2015 open app, click the same IME/OFF button as in the non root method but now instead of clicking the NORM button click the one right below HID button. Now on the upper right side there is a JOY button colored Green click that 2 times until the 360 icon next to it is highlighted then click big box in middle of screen. Now same as non root method you can map your controller buttons but this time all the sticks and corresponding button letters are available just map accordingly and start playing.
I have tested this in Drastic Ds, ePSXe, and Mupen64 plus also controller works in home screen using both methods. Hopefully this helps somebody in the future, Cheers!"
after finally getting a rom that works I tried the iornman rom in the android development section. I was able to fully disable knox so the joytick center could get access to certain files. Root alone would not let this app work. Now the controller gets detected by the joytick center but when you go assign buttons to it to map the controller it still doesn't detect the buttons at least is my case. I'm using a wired controller.
also I have tried this as well.

How to connect and use an Xbox 360 controller (wired) on Android -
1. Plug USB cable of Xbox controller into Female USB port of OTG cable
2. Plug OTG cable into your device
3. That's all. It's really that simple for a wired controller.
Some games will not respond well to controller input (without the help of 3rd party apps) and this is normal. A list of known compatible games will be featured at the end of this post.
If this doesn't work -
-You may be missing the Keylayout file for USB Xbox 360 controllers. This is unusual but does occur on some devices. You can download the file here. Paste it into the directory /system/usr/Keylayout. (Will require root access).
So yea its been a pain idk if any1 has any other solutions or things we can try... also just to note I did not flash that permissive kernel he said to try since it's for the tab s 8.4 and not the 10.5 idk if I want to take the plunge and try it...

I've included Microsoft X-BOX gamepad controller in-built module (untested) in my latest SkyHigh kernel release..... JUST FOR YOU (and any other who find it useful)
tried it and it detected the controller np all the controllers work except the left analog stick wont move my character it just moves a cursor like a mouse. Any ideas?
I greatly appreciate you taking the time to try and get this to work. Do you have a donation link anywhere?

No idea. Don't have controller to test.
Either kernel module doesn't support your exact controller type or you need to configure an app to map the controller properly.
This is all I can help with.

I got an LG 65" smart TV, a 55" Samsung smart TV and 52" Vizio Smart TV, MirrorLink to smart TV is not working with any of them. However you can use an application named AllCast from play store (it's a paid application, the free one gives you only 5 minutes of transmission time for free), with that application you will be able to mirror videos, pictures, power points, etc to the smart TV. You can't mirror the entire content from your phone to the smart TV, but that is good enough for me.

That's the crux of the near-stock and near-Nexus experience. Google disabled Miracast in the Nexus and Pixel line and Motorola followed suit.
The most frustrating thing: Android is still perfectly capable of Miracast, it has simply been disabled in the build.prop and can't be re-enabled without root (same as with the Nexus phones).
The good news: if you really, really need it, unlock your bootloader, get root and re-enable it. Change persist.debug.wfd.enable=0 to persist.debug.wfd.enable=1 or add the line if it's missing in your build.prop and Miracast should be somewhat functional again.
I'm a little lost here...I can cast to my TV (Sony XBR-65X810C). I do not have a hardware chromecast device.
can cast
I also have a SonyUHD TV XBR-49X800D and I can cast without any app or chromecast.
If you rooted your phone you can make it work:
Edit your build.prop file in /system, adding or editing this line:
persist.debug.wfd.enable=1
Reboot your phone.
Miracast will now be enabled, but you may need to turn it on in settings:
Go to Android Settings
Go to Display
Go to Cast Screen
Tap the button in the top right corner (vertical 3-dots)
Check mark Enable wireless display

That's because they have Google Cast built in (which is what Chromecast uses), not Miracast

I'm a little lost here...I can cast to my TV (Sony XBR-65X810C). I do not have a hardware chromecast device.

wow i too have a sony 32" led which has screen mirroring and panasonic 42" led smart t.v. , i am about to get my phone in a week's time, hope it works for me without any hardware . Will try from settings first, if it will not work then will try from 3rd party miracast apps, and so on. Will update you guys soon.
Thank you so much for telling me that there is a hope and possibility that it may work. I don't want to root or unlock bootloader , as i did with htc m8 and once its battery dies and if i try to turn it on few times in 0% battery (where it shuts down after showing logo only) and then when i plug the charger and turn it on, it ends up just giving errors and errors and I am left with no option to hard reset it. And start up logo also lags now even after hard reset.
I am pretty sure companies are so smart now, that they trigger something to cause certain issues once someone roots their phone or unlocks the bootloader mainly.

Do you know the model numbers of your tvs? It'll only work if they have Google Cast built-in rather than miracast

I got the phone, sadly neither my Sony led which has miracast and my Panasonic smart TV is searchable on the play... Cast settings page say "no nearby devices were found".
In display settings there is the cast option but no menu to select "enable wireless display" . Now I don't know if it's already enabled or what?!
Tried many apps still nothing, I don't want to root. So I need Chromecast?? or if any paid app I can look for or any other way will be great.

Only supports chromecast. It says motorola.
I use it with chromecast and it goes pretty
enviado desde moto z play.
Put a video up on YouTube.
The line is hashed out in the build.prop. Root and remove the # from the line to enable once the edit is complete, reboot, fully functional mirror exists again. Tried, tested, working. Hope this helps.
You sure it's safe to modify build.prop?
Hi there. I've soft-bricked my phone in the past running Marshmallow by modifying the build.prop. You sure it's safe to modify to enable miracast? Any other tricks involved to prevent bricking the device?

DEX problem

Hello,
I'm trying to use DEX with one major problem, my S8+'s screen is not functional AT ALL...
The Dex startup screen shows up on my HDMI screen, but it wants me to run the app
From what I understand, starting the DEX app is a must.
So just in cast you guys have a workaround, I'll be glad to hear it.
Pretty sure there isn't one, but what the hell
Thanks a lot.

Have you tried to run the app using adb!

Hmmm... Dex should start automatically when you connect the dock, I'm absolutely sure there is no need to launch an app.
Maybe it displays a dialog on the phone's screen and waiting for a confirmation to switch to Dex mode, I don't remember.
Anyway, without the phone's screen your options are quite limited, but here's an idea: connect the dock without power source. Now you should have the screen mirrored (no Dex). Check if everything is OK. Now reconnect the power source to the dock. It should propose to switch to Dex mode. I hope it will work now!
BTW, Dex is a good solution if you want a very basic desktop without carrying a lot of stuff. But if you need to carry a non-working phone (+dock, cables, mouse etc) just to have it, it's much better to take a cheap tablet or a laptop/netbook.
