so who's been looking for root?

i know were building up this huge bounty thread, and everyone is definitely raising attention that we don't have root, but is anyone actually actively working on rooting the n4? I've been lurking around regularly while i wait for mine, but haven't seen anyone actually say they're looking for a root.
i just have this horrible picture in my head that everyone is thinking 'there's so many ppl here surely somebody must be working on something big, ready to drop an announcement any day now'.. and in reality the only ppl here are the ones asking if somebody else is doing something about it.
sooo who's been looking for root? what findings have you found so far, what looks exploitable, are you still waiting to get your hands on your note 4? yeah me too. anybody else have some useful exploits or findings to report?

Root is a more obtainable goal! Think back at the last 2 Sammy devices with locked bootloaders, both have bounty threads, and neither was ever unlocked. Now look back and BOTH were able to obtain root. Yes unlocking the bootloader would make everything easier, but in terms of the probability, root will be obtained before the bootloader surface is even scratched. I hope I'm wrong, I would love an unlocked bootloader, but I'm highly skeptical that will ever happen, let alone before root or before Lollipop is FORCED onto our unrooted phones by AT&T.

I just want Adaway and Xposed. Why can't they just let me do what I want with the UI at least? I understand Adaway and why they don't want that but I should be able to kake an app full screen or change the dpi of an app if I want to..

Do you research root will not last without the bootloader unlocked. When Android 5.0 rolls out root will be broken on all devices PERMANENTLY unless the boot loader is unlocked. Samsung plans on rolling out 5.0 to the Note 4 in December. That means that even if root is achieved you are talking about only having it for 40 days. You will not be able to turn off updates. So eventually when you reboot your device it will auto install android 5.0 and break root for you forever. So go ahead and have a dev waste his time on getting root that will last about 40 days. The future of this phones root and custom development is all riding on unlocking the bootloader.
Don't count it out the LG G# on AT&T got the bootloader unlocked. But the effort needs to be on that not on root. Root is a waste of time.

yeah i totally see where you're coming from saying that, and can't say i wouldn't love to see my note on 5.0 too, but if it comes down to the features i 'need' vs the features i don't even know exist yet (5.0), I'd probably just choose to ride out my note 4 on KitKat.
it IS the touchwiz stuff that makes the note experience unique, not so much the new android versions.
pluuuuuuus can't sound any cooler than KitKat!!

I'd rather ride a bicycle today than wait 10 years to get licensed to fly a plane.

This applies to all 3 of you.
You will be forced to upgrade to Lollipop even on a rooted phone because you won't have a customer ROM so AT&T will still push the update. Eventually when you reboot your phone it will upgrade you to lollipop. The only way to prevent this is to NEVER use wifi. Otherwise the update will start automatically and eventually it will upgrade you to Android 5.0 whether you like it or not.
So go ahead and "ride your bike" the the next 40-60 days, then AT&T is going to run it over with a bus and you will lose root forever without an unlocked boot loader.

Wrong, because I'll use TiBU and freeze the OTA application and that can't force anything, like I did on my Note 3!

I'm not sure that possible on this phone. There is a thread over in the t mobile section for the Note 4 addressing this. It is not a stand alone app on this phone. It is built into the system and probably can't be frozen. There are concerns that they will have to get a custom kernel finished before the update rolls out on that phone even though they have an unlocked boot loader, otherwise people will lose root for good.
Check it out there is a lot of chatter right now on the future of root for this phone, basically from all of the research I have done the only chance at all you can keep root is with an unlocked boot loader and a custom kernel. Before the update for 5.0 rolls out.

Link me that thread if you don't mind good sir! It sounds like it's worth a read! All this AT&T locking crap, really has me wanting to go Nexus, but since they signed up for the 6, it'll probably be locked down too!

with root you can just yank the att fwupdate.apk out.

Yup. I will do the exact same thing if root is achieved before the push 5.0m I did it on my Note 3 and never had a single worry about Knox or any OTAs. I don't know why this guy is so adamant with the scare tactics.... Just give me root and I am g2g.

Dude, you are laughable. You keep telling people to do research, yet you have no clue what you are talking about half the time.
Please describe what you mean by "built into the system". I (and am sure many others) would love to hear your explanation on that one lol.

You know... I hadn't thought of that... LolliPop being pushed to our phones prior to being able to obtain root... without at least root, we can't disable the OTA and after "asking" a few times, it will just happen. Once that occurs, getting root seems even more unlikely than it already is...

You are terribly mistaken... If root is obtained you can disable the updates & OTA apk's, which would prevent the 5.0 update from being pushed down. But if AT&T starts pushing LolliPop BEFORE we get root, it's a done deal.
This might be the very reason we see a very accelerated deployment of LollioPop by AT&T. Haven't we all been complaining that the carriers take too long "certifying" OS updates before releasing them? Now we may not have that problem...

I just got my new tablet and I am trying to root but don't know which files to use. Has anyone successfully rooted their AT&T tablet? Thank you.

I don't think you can root the att tab s. It has a locked bootloader

^^^^ Just like he said, AT&T does indeed lock their bootloaders. If they arent ecrypted there may be a way around it but thats not something I have any knowledge in as ive never owned a AT&T device.

Seems new? I think I seen one like this but idk if this is the same. Well... Since it's based off of exploits by the looks of it, its best to do some more research on it. I might give it a try later idk since it saids supported for the T800 also

I would try it but I have not rooted in awhile and would hate to brick my tablet.

I have looked at it. It use adb and tries bunches of exploit. Since I'm already root I cannot try it. It would most likely not brick your tablet and its worth a try I guess. Up to you!

For anyone wanting to know if SRS Root works, it doesn't. After it connects through ADB, it tries many different exploits before applying the 4th one. Then is prompts that the device is successfully rooted and SuperUser has been installed. It then reboots the device just as CF Autoroot does, but it fails to actually root. This is my 1st device with a locked bootlader, so I'm considering swapping it for the T-Mobile version. Can't deal with the bloatware much longer

Both the T707 (AT&T Tab S 8.4) and T807 (AT&T Tab S 10.5) are rootable, as far as I know. The thing is, it depends on firmware. If you're using NH6 or NJ5, I think you can root. If you're running the latest NK1 firmware, you're out of luck for now.

KingRoot form chinese guys roots NK1 firmware now as well!

[Q] AT&T Note Edge Root, Kingroot + SafeStrap?

for a Samsung Galaxy Note Edge (AT&T SM-N915A) Has anyone used ODIN to flash 4.4.4 from Lollipop (which I read doesn't trip knox) and then used Kingroot to get temporary root and then install Safestrap? I didn't really find any custom roms, but when booting from Safestrap, wouldn't root still be available even if you installed the stock Lollipop rom as the SS rom? Or would it be too difficult to remove the recovery if that's present in the stock LP rom so it doesn't mess with SS if you boot from it?

I did use ODIN to go back to KitKat and then used Kingoroot, but the safestrap part your talking about I have no clue. Was unaware of any safestrap for the Notre 4 or Edge.
Back on Lollipop unrooted though. Found the temp root annoying and with FF browser and AdBlock plugin I'm getting by

Sorry, no permanent root yet... But the 5.1.1 upgrade is available, just remember to clear the cache before attempting to upgrade.

Sorry, no permanent root yet...

So it is possible now to get temporary root access using kingroot on 5.1.1 but I am hoping someone get this information to chainfire so that chainfire can use it to come up with a permanent root using odin.

I am from Vietnam and i just 've bought the SM-N910A (said that from ATT) in Vietnam. I used RootChecker and Phone INFO to get to check my phone.
The result is my phone was ROOTED!!!. I restarted some times but the ROOT is still accessed.
I tried to use Root Explorer to copy/paste from/into system folder, it's ok like other rooted devices.
I'm following xda-note edge and see everyone's saying that NO way to permanent root ATT note egde.
I also dont know what method the seller used to root my edge, but i think it's permanently rooted.
I've NOT try to unlock bootloader neither install recovery. There seem to be no official method for ATT edge. I am afraid bricking my device.
I upload some screen to show you my note. Thanks and need your advice, guys

When you moved data into /system did you remove it before rebooting, or did you leave it in /system and were still able to boot?
If you could enable USB Debugging and open a shell with ADB and type "ps", then post the output, that may be a place to start.

Recently, kingroot has been able to get root on my note, but after 5-10 minutes I get ANRs and the phone crashes, then I have to re flash with Odin to go back to stock. I have logcat logs up to where it crashes as well.
I'm on 5.1.1

Hi, i have a n915a too but the baseband ends in BOC8 and the last firmware is 5.0.1, if i use the stock firmware 5.1.1 from other baseband? it will brick the phone?.
is there a way to install different firmware from another model?, like change n915a to n915f or something like that

Bringing this back to life, we are now September of 2016. Any way of permanent root on Note Edge?

I did temp root with KingRoot too. I went and disable the bothering Carrier IQ which was taking all my zerolemon battery. And also I disable most most of the bloatware of at&t.
Let's hope Chainfire or someone co.e with the permanent one.

Customs boot icon
I rooted my at&t note edge using king root. Then I installed SuperSU and used the option to install binaries in "normal" mode. Then the phone rebooted and in the booting screen i got an icon with an unlocked lock that said "Custom" then the phone booted normally no problem.
I dont know if this information is useful but i thought it was important to share.

I have 5.1.1. After rooting the phone repeatly bacause after 30 seconds of being rooted the phone rebooted. I went into download mode (home + dwVol) the status showed that was official and that it was locked. I don't know if this information is relevant but sharing is important.

Help with my note 4, downgraded, rooting, etc

I've been on this forum for roughly a week looking through articles and I'm seriously confused at this.
I have a Samsung Verizon note 4 on Lollipop
Baseband N910VVRU2BOG5
I'm trying to either downgrade it, root it, etc. Everything I've tried just sends me in circles. I get theres no perma-root method, but can I do anything at this point?

It depends on what you want to do, as there are ways around doing certain things that usually require a rooted device. For instance, if you want to back up your apps and their data, there's an app called Helium that works on non-rooted devices.

Right now, what I really want to do is 'block' mock locations check. But I cannot figure out how to downgrade my phone, if its even possible. And I cant root my phone. I have tried Kingroot, but it said my phone wasnt rootable yet. But I read somewhere I can downgrade my phone to a rootable OS, but that didnt work either, so I dunno what I can do.

Unfortunately, unless you updated to a version of Lollipop using one of the safe update options mentioned in one of the threads, you can't downgrade to a previous version. There is a program called Debloater, I believe, that will block any app you want on your phone, but you still can't uninstall said app. All the program does is essentially disable the blocked app from running. For instance, when I didn't want my phone automatically checking for system updates, I would use Debloater to block the two apps on the phone that are required for it to perform those automatic checks. All you do is start Debloater on your computer, plug your phone into a USB port, set the phone to 'Media Device', and wait for the program to recognize the device. Once it does, just select the app(s) you want to block. Just out of curiosity, though, what version of Lollipop are you currently running? If you're on 5.0.1, I can understand why you don't want to stay there. I was on it for a little while, but only as a pit stop on my way to 5.1.1. I can say with assurance that after running my phone on 5.1.1 for at least a couple weeks or more, it runs very smoothly, even better than it did on 4.4.4, which was supposed to be better than 5.0.1 as far as performance goes. My battery lasts about as long as it did on Kit Kat, and I haven't experienced any crazy overheating issues.

Just bought an AT&T Note 4 today, I was informed it had 4.4.4, but it instead had 5.1.1, and root had been a big part of all 3 previous Note phones I've owned, so I was looking for a way to do so, seems like nothing's been accomplished yet, until I stumbled upon this. Will this work on 5.1.1 even with that locked bootloader?

Im bot aure exactly what you are asking but from what i gather you are either wondering about downgrade or root. Either way it is not possible once the phone is on 5.1.1 you are stuck with only one way to go and thats up when and if an update comes. As for root its looking highly impossible to get our bootloader unlocked as at&t never released a developer edition of our phone which makes a reliable root impossible. I would recomend if you have the cash yo do so sell the at&t note 4 and get a tmobile note 4 which is unlocked and rootable

No it is not possible odin will fail because the 5.1.1 bootloader is secure and detects all attempts to overwrite or change it and stops the process. So basically you can not touch the bootloader downgrade or root or modify the system or kernel in any way unless the bootloader is hacked or unlocked period. Sorry
P.s. if it would have been that simple (boy do i wish it was) you would find a thread on here about downgrading to 4.x.x from 5.1.1 and not so many threads about root waiting room and things like that
