[Q] Lollipop Update problems - Desire 816 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just updated the phone to lollipop. I knew i shouldntve done it...
The phone lags like crazy now when trying to multitask.
7.44/8GB used
The worst part is the camera. Added a whole bunch of unecessary frosting to an otherwise simple camera ui. Thats not the worst part though. Now whenever using the camera everything is like dramatically out of contrast. Bright spots appear like white flares. There is an ugly color saturation when taking pictures of light and dark subjects withing the same shot.
How do i uninstall this crap and go back to my old phone?

You can install Kitkat over Lollipop by running the appropriate RU file for your phone from your PC.
BTW how do you have so little free space after resetting your phone while running Lollipop? Did you install a bunch of apps? A clean install of Lollipop should leave you with about 3GB of free space. A clean install of Kitkat w/o VM auto downloads leaves about 4GB of free space.

[Q] Some annoyances I need suggestions with.

New GNex user in big lines happy with it, some annoying issues and maybe you can give me a helping hand with them.
1. On my previous Galaxy S1, when something went wrong, and system frozen, if I hold Power button for a few seconds the device would restart. Yesterday I managed to make GNex stop responding and the only solution was to remove back cover and take off the battery. Is there any other way ?
2. Flash plugin in browser is horrible. I use the phone a lot for browsing and this is quite a big disappointment. I opened youtube.com and set the video quality to 1080p and the phone completely frozen. On most sites if I switch a video on full screen, I can't seek in it. Does this happen to you also ?
3. colors look too saturated, orange for instance is bad for eyes. I guess I need to flash a rom with custom color settings ?
4. I still feel some lag here and there specially when scrolling something. I exepected a more lag free experience from 1 GB ram and dual core cpu.
Right now I am on latest stock 4.0.4 image from google website.

[Q] Xperia Arc S performance advice

So I'm stuck in a contract with my Xperia Arc S until next year but it has virtually ground to a halt. I have to wait 10+ seconds for my messages to open on a good day. Every app takes a long time to do anything and I've had to limit my app usage heavily due to this.
I close all non-essential apps through the Manage Applications option of the Settings regularly and still I only really have approx >20 MB RAM left at any point.
I also delete all my messages regularly and don't use any other message applications aside from the stock app.
I'm not running ICS, but rather the original Ginger Bread that came with the phone.
I've tried using a different Home Launcher app to reduce the number of home screens, but it had very little noticeable impact.
My question is what do I do? I'm happy to root, install custom roms etc at this point, I just want my phone to be useable until I upgrade next year.
I have some experience with Android phones but very little technical knowledge to do with hacking/rooting devices so you'll have to bear with me. Any advice will be much appreciated.
Cheers
If you are a casual user and you don't need high performance, I recommend upgrading to ICS. ICS update hasn't got the best performance (in fact the GPU is slower than in GB), but you'll get enough free memory for casual usage.
If you are looking a bit of both, I recommend either using CM or CM based roms. If you got used to Xperia look and feel, put this ROM, for better battery life put stock CM. But beware, unlocking the bootloader will void your warranty, so if you think that you will run into issues and can't fix them yourself, do not unlock it.
I've no experience with Ginger Bread, but maybe clearing app cache and rebooting the phone every one or two days could help?
If the performance once was better and you don't want to root: save your apps, messages and contacts and do a factory reset.
stay on gingerbread, root yout phone, remove useless system app and install greenify.

Or try to install some custom rom, they have previusly removed all useless stuff.
I upgraded to ICS to give it a go before I did a factory reset, and I'm really surprised to say my phone has never been faster. Managed to unlock a lot more RAM, app management seems to be a lot less stunted and easier to implement. A few more stock apps than GB and I prefer the look. I'm a bit confused at all the posts saying ICS is worse. Maybe it will slow down over time, but just right now I feel like I got a new phone.

If you do not notice the tiny details, you do not notice them.
When you open the phone pad, it does take a while to open it. The notification LED does not work (not performance related though) and some other issues.

Compared to how my phone was the phone pad is lightning fast. I haven't actually noticed the LED thing but now that you mention it. Of course I'm aware of the CPU issues and other stuff, but I've spent the last few months getting really miffed at my phone because it was basically an expensive brick which took years to open a message and the really negative consensus about ICS put me off updating which has solved all my casual user issues.
Now that I know about this site, I'm going to get to know Android a bit better, but for now the tiny details are negligible for me at least.
Just checked my LED and it works fine for all the notifications I receive.

Memory consumption with lollipop

My lollipop experience is this: battery life seems OK but less than I was getting with the elementalx kernel, the sound stutters especially when the screen is locked. Its pretty random but the buffer is underrunning at times. Which leads me to what's bugging me the most. With KitKat and the same apps installed I was getting roughly 800mb-1gb free of memory. With lollipop it starts out OK at boot but quickly starts eating up ram like candy. I've had Pandora force close in the background which is probably why I'm getting sound stutters because something is using memory and force closing services in the background. I'm using apex launcher and that constantly has to reload to. Before it very rarely reloaded. Also various widgets are having their services killed and I have to go and manually restart them. I've gone from 1gb free typically to like 3-400 mb free. Does L really use that much more ram? Also what about the damned "focus" on battery life they claimed? Its definitely worse here. Looks like this update was half baked if you ask me. I'm at least not getting horrible fps in games like some are claiming. And yeah the YouTube bug is really random and annoying. Anyone else have low memory issues??

Same issue. But found the soultion
Facing the same issue. But what i came across is that maximum people who updated to lollipop via OTA are facing these.
Others who have side loaded it or flashed the new lollipop image are all fine. There are bugs in lollipop but atleast they are not facing the terrible issues like us. That battery life is insane , i cant use it as my daily driver with such pathetic battery life. But people who have updated it other than OTA are infact getting better battery than KitKat what Google claimed it to be.
Also the memory issue. Yes this is the main problem what we all OTA updaters are facing. This is called memory leak. I founded it over here. Few developers have explained it in detail - You should have a look.
They have suggested for a clean install of lollipop by complete flash or a factory reset. I have not done it yet. Too lazy to get the backup and all.
But have to try it as we are left with no other option. Check out this link for memory leak - tinyurl.com/pmjlol2
If you decide to install it yourself, use one of the current builds instead of the factory image. Google has pushed a few revisions out.

Lollipop vs Kitkat Smoothness and battery.

Hi guys, some weeks ago i received lollipop ota on my m8. i updated and after that i made a factory reset just to be sure nothing from kitkat remains. but now i notice that the phone is not smooth and have a good battery that it was on kitkat. i will show some situations:
1-recent apps screen, on kitkat apps appeared faster, on lollipop takes a while to load all 9 apps in grid view, also in card view sometimes the scroll is not running at 60fps.
2-apps are slower to open and they are not staying on ram like was on kitkat. there is a lot more of reloading apps, and multitasking is not as smooth as it was.
3-camera is slower to open, i don't know if this was cause by play store updates from htc camera or lollipop firmware. also sometimes when i take a picture and press the photo to see a message appears "image is being saved" and i have to press again to open the photo. i don't use sd card and have 17gb of space free.
4-battery is draining faster, i always do an overnight test, 6~8 hours of idle, on kitkat i can wake in the morning with 100% battery, now i woke up with 95%. i left google now off, location on, sincronization on, wifi on. the same stuff that i used with kitkat, except for one thing, smart lock by location, maybe is the problem, i will make a test later. also battery is draining faster on usage, i can see battery dropping very fast when using feedly or chrome.
5-about chrome, maybe is just the app and not lollipop. is slower, sometimes the blue progress bar do not appear, and sometimes it just don't load any page after clicking enter, and i have to close and try again. also embedded youtube videos do not have sound and i have to use youtube app(the can drain the phone battery in 4 hours when using continuoulsy and 100% brightness, while on mx player it lasts more than 9 hours SoT).
6-The android encryption is enabled by default on m8? if yes, is there a way to disable it?
Lollipop brought a lot of good stuff, like lock screen notifications, better notification and quick settings design, but the phone doesn't feel like was some months ago, the fastest and smoother android phone i ever used with very fast multitasking and very good battery. anyone share the same feeling? and if there is something that can make the phone go back to be smooth like was?
Have you tried sense7 ? If your phone is unlocked and rooted; try sense 7. Everything has improved.

I do wonder, which good things has Lollipop brought? I am waiting for Sense 7, but on Sense 6 I don't see any.
I have the same problem, particularly in battery life. Used to have great battery life, now it sucks. Is there a proper fix?
I returned to kitkat and device was a lot smoother and with better battery. But now I am running stock gpe 5.1 and I'm very happy with it. I only miss sense camera, I installed it but do not work properly.
One thing you can do is install xposed if you're rooted and do the amplify tutorial. Get rid of a lot of wakelocks
KitKat
I used both versions for M8 (4.4.4 and 5.0.1 official sense software)
And i highly recommend android 4.4.4 for HTC One M8.
Kitkat is more smoother and unbuggy than Lollipop. No restriction on offical apps (like photo gallery zoe features this features really cool but HTC disable this features on Lollipop.)
Android Kitkat 4.4.4 sense 6 really really good for M8. So.. I'm back to KitKat and I'm not regretful about that

Why kitkat if you have Marshmallow already?
Was about to ask the same thing. MM is the better version of kitkat if you ask me ! It's smooth and very battery friendly for me
Kitkat,Lollipop and Marshmallow is smooth but Lollipop and Marshmallow have visual effects and they have mater design I don't like these features.
Also
Dalvik machine better than Art Machine even if Art system gain better point than Dalvik on Antutu Benchmark.
Because most of apps adapted to Dalvik machine ,you can see this moment on offical HTC apps like music apps or some 3D games or when you write something on forums;keyboard really buggy on Lollipop therefore KitKat is best choice of me. Because I can move in software without bugs.

Thoughts on the CM Lollipop Update

I'm happy to be using Lolipop, but I've learned that the CM twist kind of worked better.
If it weren't for all of the APN issues I have with CM ROMs, I'd be using that instead of stock Lolipop.
So far I've noticed some things that make the stock ROM feel a bit unexciting. Here's some things I like and dislike:
The first was CM had a global setting for toggling app installations to an external SD card. I was really disappointed to learn that stock did not have this feature.
Wasn't so impressed by Sense. Just seems like a lot of bloat with nothing really special. I thought that they would have really flaunted new features in a Lolipop ROM. Maybe because it's not a flagship model
I do like the fact that I can use CDMA commands(but i doubt that I'll ever need them now, only if I were using a CM ROM)
I installed 15 small apps upon installtion and I went from 4 or 5 gigs free to 1 gig free internally and can't figure out how or why....
So what about you?
I stopped using CM12 a few months ago so my memory might be foggy. As you mentioned the problems there were the APN stuff, poor audio support and not having good camera software. I guess I missed the option to install apps to the sdcard.
I personally like the look and feel of the HTC menus and app page so I'm happy that their version of 5.0 has the black background on the app page.
OK, I like that the phone has been updated to Lollipop. There are very minor changes in this update. So minor that it can be easy to confuse KK and Lollipop since Sense overpowers and is front and center. Sense 6 is Sense 6 regardless what OS it's on.
I like the notifications and the theming. I'm OK with losing lockscreen widgets.
I haven't noticed any real differences in ram and battery usage.
A couple gripes...
Why bother re-adding the Dot View app into the mix? And on top of that, why make it a system app? That app has NEVER worked for the 816 and HTC never even bothered to make a dotview case. A lot of thought apparently isn't going into these updates.
Split view camera mode is useless. I thought the idea behind it was to record front and rear cameras at the same time to capture reactions and such. I'm guessing it's a hardware limitation since the other phone's cameras can record at the same time.
I like the theming but I wish they made it a little more powerful. I'd like to use specific colors or textures for certain parts of the interface. The phone choosing colors based on your wallpaper is cool but it could be better. I had a red and black wallpaper. I checked to see what skinning the phone did for me. It used the colors red and black but for some strange reason through in extra colors. I understand burgundy since that's a blend of my wallpapers colors but pink? Where did it get pink? Even worse it wanted to make the background behind my apps in the app launcher pink. WTH HTC???
All in all very minor complaints. HTC did a good job with the update. I would have liked Sense 7 and 5.1 but I'll take what they give me. I don't expect another update from HTC but I know the devs will handle things nicely.
Yeah...
With every phone I've had, I wen't custom immediately, with no interest in anything the vendor or manufacturer had to offer, I guess it should be no surprise that I find this ROM to be lacking.
