need help choosing the right rom - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I just recieved a sprint s3 sph-l710 with 4.4.2 from a friend. I rooted and installed trwp recovery but after looking through the roms I cant figure out which one would work. also I read some of the roms have a problem with LTE?

Basically, the most stable ones are non-AOSP/CM roms. The others run pretty well, but may have a little issue here or there. The WickedX series is probably the most active TouchWiz rom (close to stock) that will have the fewest bugs.

Hmm when I installed thebarebones wicked x rom the phone seemed to heat up excessively. Most likely from the theme. It was sitting around 114 degrees Fahrenheit. on the stock one it goes from 80 sitting at about 95 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit when im using the stock Android browser.

I prefer AICP 9.0 ( http://dwnld.aicp-rom.com/?device=d2spr ) but that's because I hate Touchwiz (stock) and I want lollipop. The latest nightlies are actually really stable, but if you want a for sure stable release I'd go with a kitkat d2lte ROM or touchwiz.

Is there a description of what's removed and changed for aicp? Or some interesting features? Looking for really barebones with most stuff removed. I got this stock one im using down to 1gb free ram so far. Seems to keep it cooler not doing so many processes all at once. Also i can down clock the cpu to below 1ghz without all the background stuff using up the excess processing power. Doesn't feel so much like a pocket warmer even while quickly going through pages.
Edit: have you had any problems with 9.0? It seems like data doesn't work for me on version 8 is there some fix to flash for 8 or should I just try 9?

If you're on the actual sprint (not virgin mobile, boost, etc) then your data should work fine on 9.0. AICP is not barebones, however. I'd think of it as cm with some good added features. However, I have like 1gb of free ram on aicp idle.

9.0 works great for me on my virgin mobile s3. The latest nightlies are very stable.

Im on sprint.. Do i need to update firmware or flash a radio for it to work? Im using 4.4.2 stock. Also just to make sure im not doing it wrong. What are steps for flashing this specific rom?

You are on ND8 if you are running that rom. Some people have reported success and some have not using that firmware. NJ2 seems to be better for running lollipop roms.
MAKE UP A NANDROID BAKCUP OF YOUR CURRENT SET UP
To update to NJ2: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/41671/L710VPUDNJ2_L710SPRDNJ2_SPR/
Flash a recovery via ODIN, it is the program you used in the above step: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201860
There is also TWRP somewhere, but even though Philz isn't being developed, I haven' t had any issues with it. But if you want to recover your previous setup, it is probably best to use the same recovery as before.
Restore your old setup.
Most roms come with instructions for installation in the post. Basically, nAndroid backup, wipe data/system, install zip of rom, and then GApps if needed. Most custom roms are already rooted about of the box.

Do you have a link to the firmware that doesnt require me to register?

No. You need to use odin for the firmware upgrade. Just make a backup of your rom before flashing. If you are using twrp now, just flash that tar through odin when you finish. Then, you can reboot to recovery and restore that backup after flashing the new firmware. And everything will be the same. The whole process will probably take you 30.minutes.

[Q] how to flash stock rom via cwm

I have found a couple of optimized stock ROM images on xda and on BBS Gran too, but when I flash it using the cwm method I am always stuck on lg optimus lte logo.
Every cm ROM that I flashed using cwm works fine. I am experiencing this problem with only stock ROMs. Any help ?
Have you ever unbricked the phone? For some reason the stock roms all require you to have ran through the unbrick process at some point unless that has changed recently.

I have CWM and can flash custom Roms , i dont think i need to unbrick any further... or maybe I am mistaken ?
it depends when you bought your phone and what updates you have, if you have an old gingerbread p930 that hasn't been updated you might not have to unbrick, i think ics and later and even some gingerbread phones have reported secure bootloader that won't let you boot into cwm, if you can boot into cwm you are fine, if you get a fast boot and a few other warnings when you try to boot into cwm then you have to unbrick. i think it might be harder to unbrick a phone that is getting the errors already but im not sure, it might be the same, i got the error on mine and i was able to unbrick.

I'm kind of in the same boat. Well maybe not the same boat, but I'm in one next to you. I've got CM10.1 and I absolutely hate the battery life. I'd like to go back to stock. I'm not sure though if I have to go through the unbricking process or just use CWM to flash the stock rom onto it.

if you like battery life, use the rom in my sig, i get 9-40 hours on a battery depending on how much the screen is on.
the rom is based of stock at&t ICS with bloatware removed, a few extras added and a lightningfast wind 3.1 kernel preinstalled

I installed the wind kernel from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2119976 and set the governor to smartassv2 based on someones suggestion here and it made a big difference for me. The battery life in CM10.1 went from absolutely dreadful to at least acceptable. Not as good as CM9, but I can live with it for now.

It's possible that it isn't necessary now, but I know that it used to be impossible to flash the stock ics based roms until you had gone through the unbrick process one time. The first time I remember seeing it was in this thread for ho!no!'s rom based on the leaked ics. I know for a fact that even though I had CWM installed and was using CM9 I was not able to install ho!no!'s stock rom until I went through the unbrick process.
KronicSkillz and SeriousGeorge I'll definitely be looking into this. Thanks

Your data is not working cuz you have an ICS modem, you probably need to install the one click stock to correctly partition your phone as TBSGS4 is a very stable ROM. Your Software and Baseband versions are both FI03 so you need to do the one click to use Jelly Bean TouchWiz. Find it here- http://www.sxtpdevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=166

What he is saying is that you have to first install the Jelly Bean system, and then re-flash the TBSGS4 rom, as this insures that you are on proper operating system for that Rom to work correctly. He included a link that has step by step directions on how to do it.

Yes, follow the directions in the link, boot it up, use Mobile Odin to flash a custom recovery (kernel in .tar format), then reflash TBSGS4.
I mean everything you are wanting to know is actually in the first 4 posts of the Touched by S4 ROM thread... You really need to read up about what you are doing and understand it as well. There are plenty resources at your fingertips, use them. All the information is already posted many times in the threads here, you can't expect people to post it over and over again, it is your job as a user to search. I told you your problem and linked you to all the relevant information to solve it, the rest is up to you.

[Q] Remove Cyanogenmod Problem

Hi,
I had stock 4.3 firmware on my att i747 galaxy s3, then I decided to flash cyanogenmod. everything went well but i dont really like it.
Now I want to go back to stock. I tried flashing the stock rom with odin but it fails and it says this on the phone:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-I747
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: Yes (2 counts)
CURRENT BINARY: Custom
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
QUALCOMM SECUREBOOT: ENABLE
Warranty Bit: 1
BOOTLOADER RP SWREV: 2
SW REV CHECK FAIL : Fused 2 > Binary 0
The android version it shows is 4.3.1 and im able to use it normally with the cyanogenmod.
What can I do to flash a stock rom back?
EDIT: used triangle away and the custom binary download says "no" now and the current binary says "samsung official" but still get the same problem.
Thank You

You need to flash a stock ROM that has no boot loader attached to it. I just reverted my S3 back to stock from CM11 so that I could sell it. Flash a Rom.zip through recovery and it should work fine. I see you are ATT so I suggest this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2540998. You have the choice of Stock Rooted without bootloader which is what you will be looking for. This thread also has everything you may need. Do not attempt to use Odin to flash roms with older bootloaders or you will find major issues.
You will almost definitely need to wipe everything so back everything up and be sure to take a Nandroid.

In that thread you have 2 good options that I can see. Scroll down and you will find one ROM by upndwn4par/full and another debloated directly under it. Which you chose depends on if you want Samsung/ Google software on it. The upndwn4par file will have you closer to stock than the other. Please be sure to read a couple pages, even if you don't get any immediate knowledge from it you will become way more familiar with these processes. It's worth the time, and safer for your phone.

That is a stock ROM. It is just pre rooted with knox removed. It is a modified version of the Stock OTA with the problematic parts removed..

You need a custom recovery to flash this. CWM or TWRP. I'm not too sure how you got to CM without one but be sure you have one and then flash the Rom from above. You can install CWM with the app 'Rom Manager'.

Thanks for all the help you gave me so far.
EDIT: I found this thread about ported s4 apps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2267029, can i just flash it with CWM using cyanogenmod?
You can not flash that S4 port. It says it is specifically for the Galaxy advance. Also you are correct that the Samsung player requires Touchwiz. Try Power Amp, it has pretty good reviews and features. A 3rd party player is probably your best bet. You can cherry pick for features

Can someone please help walk me through a rooted GB27 to CyanogenMod 11?

So I've been at this for a while now. I've had no issue flashing to LiquidSmooth's Liquid-JB-v2.7-UNOFFICIAL-d710 Android 4.2.2, but I can't for the life of me get this thing to install a version of 4.3.x or 4.4.x.
Right now, I've rolled back to: Rwilco12's SPH-D710_GB27_1014481_Rooted_Nodata.exe Android 4.1.2.
I have CM 11, but when I try to install it using recovery mode, it errors out and aborts the install. All the instructions I find, keep telling me to install CM's 10.2 and then update the bootloader, but I can't find links to the old versions to any of these.
Is there anything in 4.3.x or 4.4.x that has a 1 click Odin install? Or can someone walk me through taking this thing from GB27 to something new? I believe it is rooted per Rwilco's image name.

Change the recovery that your using. What doesn't flash in ClockworkMod might flash perfectly in Philz Recovery or TWRP.
Sent from my 710C using XDA Free mobile app
I'm going to need more help with that aspect. I've tried that. I have TWRP in a zip file that I've tried to install. I downloaded TWRP Manager from the App store. I downloaded Rom manager. Nothing seems to be working. When I select reboot into recovery, it just goes to the stock android recovery and says it failed.
I am able to install E4GT-EL29-directbootCWM-v3.tar.md5
or StockCWM-EL26.tar.md5 using Odin, but no luck installing TWRP.
I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but I have no idea what. This is likely a simple process, but I don't know which files or what order to do this in.
When I flash to E4GT-EL29-directbootCWM-v3.tar.md5 from Odin, it leaves me in recovery mode until I install LiquidSmooth 4.2.x.

Yeah? shoot me the link for one that is working. I was reading all night - most link to threads from 2013 with links that are all broken. You want to send me a working one - great
Most start from something newer, older, etc. Everything I found on GB27 didn't work. Right now, I'm on GB27, with an e3 recovery image from RWilco. I can use the guides to get me from there to Liquidsmooth 4.2.x, but any progress beyond that doesn't work, and I don't want to brick the phone.

Thanks, this got me through it. I ended up using philz_touch_6.15.9-d710.tar to install Cyanogen 11 and gapps for 4.4.2.
Should I be all done now, or would there be more things I'd have to install? I never did anything with the modem files. I also only plan on using this as a PDA so I'm not sure if that is needed.

If you never flashed anything modem-wise, then you're still running the GB27 (JB) modem. You'll need a Gingerbread or ICS modem only if you want working 3g data/MMS messaging.
Otherwise, JB modems shouldn't cause any problems that I know of.

Upgrade firmware only to cof8?

Hello all,
I was wondering if I can upgrade the radio and bootloader to COF8 without running a 5.1.1 ROM. I am rooted with Ktoonz kernel with firmware AOC9 with 5.0.2 stock ROM.
TIA.
Bob
Once you upgrade bootloader , you can only run 5.1.1. Not sure about ONLY upgrading radio.
Thank You for the reply..
So once I ODIN the new firmware, I need to load a 5.1.1 rom before letting the phone boot up to the 5.0.2 rom?

You cannot boot a 5.0.2 ROM once you are on 5.1.1 firmware. That's the way it is as far as I know. There is no downgrade possible once you are on 5.1.1
Personally, I have no issues with 5.1.1. Great ROMs now. Great battery life. I personally do NOT care about Knox or the ability to run Samsung Pay. Just my 2c.
Thank You.
SO.. Once I start the firmware upgrade.. I must immediately load a 5.1.1 rom.
1. Upgrade the baseband... dont re-boot.
2. Upgrade the Bootloader... dont re-boot.
3. Install a 5.1.1 rom... reboot. Thinking of the ROM below.

I won't tell you what ROM to choose. Yes, coincidentally I am using the Xtrestolite rom with the alliance frameworks, but I have a lot of other favorites both on TMobile as well as the International galaxy S6 or S6 Edge roms. The key is the kernel which gives you root. The International ROMs as well as the Tmobile ROMs all work with the latest Unikernel version 6. Once in a while if you run into the no call audio issues, simply flash the latest no call audio fixes. I don't have links right now but most of the OPs on these ROMs will list the no call audio patch files basically to have Tmobile as well as Canadian variants work universally. So yes, simply use Odin to install the latest OF8 bootloader and modem, which I am on. Then flash any 5.1.1 ROM of choice followed by the version 6 Unikernel and boot up. Boots can take up to 10 minutes so do't be concerned you may be bootlooping.

Odin should say pass if a successful flash. Plus use the three button method....Power, home, volume up to boot to recovery and see TWRP. Best way to do the TWRP verification is to use three button, Pwr, home, volume down and hold to get to the first bootloader screen, then when you cancel out using volume down immediately hold the powr, home, volume up to get to the twrp screen. Make sure you have a 5.1.1 ROM of choice on your Phone along with the unikernal and before you upgrade, so that you have something to flash
If you are unsure about any of this, there are a slew of FAQ's on this stuff. So make sure you fully understand what you are doing and having the files in place PRIOR to doing anything. Like all the OPs state here, I'm not responsible for anyone bricking their phone or doing anything that makes their situation a now aht do I do to fix xyz issues. As long as you have the latest Odin mentioned in various OPs here, are comfortable with the process of using ODIN, testing their setup to make sure that your phone and cable and opertaing system have proper drivers to see your phone when in download mode etc, this should not be a big deal. That said, I don't know the level of your expertise in doing this so all I can do is warn you to check and double check you have everything in place before proceeding.

Post #8 details install guide for Tmobile users. This whole thread is a great guide for installing firmware and a 5.1.1 ROM. I'm not making a ROM recommendation since that's a personal issue, but this is a good starting choice so you should look at this thread and possible use this as a good guide for how to do stuff, including having this ROM on board you phone as a starting point. Just offering you everything I can think of before you jump in.
Thank You So much. Im gunna go for it.
