Same issu here... I think that all custom roms has this problem... But I was told that could be a recovery problem(because it also wakes up when charging) so I'm using AOKP(v1.2 AWESOME battery life now) with TWRP recovery (I was using CWM)... Tonight I'm gonna check if it still waking up itself.
The recovery has little to do with the running ROM. Clockworkmod switches on the phone when nearly charged.
The phone waling and screen.coming on is much more likely to be a rogue app.

try a fresh install performing full wipe, clearing cache and dalvik cache and also use fastboot erase cache command before flashing boot img
i am also on viper 2.01 and don't have any such problems
There is no way...
I just tried everything..
With any custom rom and custom recovery, the phone wake up itself when charging off...
Only with the stock rom and oficial recovery it works Ok. Hope they find a solution..
I noticed there is some kind of pattern, the screen all of a sudden starts to turn itself on and off slowly and then faster and then it reaches a point where it stays on for about 10 seconds and then goes back off for a while.. it's very strange !! i've been using viperX for a long time and this never happened... at first i thought it was the productivity lockscreen notifying me of new emails or smth but that wasnt it... i only have google apps, xda app, facebook and chrome.. could it be one of these?? maybe its an app that uses internet because i noticed it happens much less or sometimes doesnt happen at all when i turn wifi off
task killer or smart stay ex
Had happened to me last evening. Random auto wakeup, first the touch buttons lightup and then
the screen. Then it goes to sleep on its own and then wakeup again. At first I thought it was related
to motion sensor because it always managed to coincide when I started typing in my laptop. But later
I noticed it wasn't the case as I was away from the table when it reached a very fast frequency
similar to notification LED,flashing sleeping flashing sleeping.... then complete sleep.
Went in task manager in search of rouge app, found "HTC Hub","Google Search","Google Play"
and a few other were constantly being slaughtered by the "Android Task Killer Free".
Exited the "Android Task Manager Free" and the auto wakeup has completely disappeared since then.
I also closed smart stay EX, which might have been the culprit as well since I have got dust in my front
camera and those might be recognized as faces or eyes?
I suggest you check for stray apps or task killers.
Make sure that none of the apps(background) crashing or being killed.
I believe custom roms try to enhance the performance by limiting the minimum
memory balance before which background inactive apps are killed by android.
Might be the cause but not quite sure.
So thats that, worth a try. Go to [Apps-->Running] and check if some app is disappearing and reappearing
on its own. Force stop it. Reboot the phone. Avoid any memory tweaking and task killer,
android is smart enough to know when to kill and when to keep apps.
Note: I am running a stock 4.0.3(1.29), no unlock, rooting etc...
Good luck

That worked !! but in a different way, i have no task killers and the ROM did not kill apps before because it didnt use to happen until recently, but i tried to clean up my phone and uninstalled some apps and it stopped since then, problem is i uninstalled them all at once so i dont know which app exactly was the cause but sure it was one of 'em.. maybe it got corrupted and started crashing in the background or something because i didnt install any apps recently... this didnt happen not even once since i cleaned up those apps.. thanx a lot for helping
So the root cause could be thee Apps that has permissions to wack/prevent (android.permission.WAKE_LOCK) your devices from sleeping..
I experienced it occasionally while 'smart stay EX' was on beta time..

I recommend installing "Wakelock detector" which shows statistics of WAKE_LOCK usage !!
My Galaxy Nexus is running CM11 since day one and before that I was running PlayfulGod's Unnofficial port.
Every couple of days the phone simply crashes/hangs. It happened at night few hours after I last touched it, it happened during the day while simply laying at sleep in the desk and even while using it. The phone simply stops responding.
If it crashes while sleeping the phone appears to be dead, while active, the screen will remain frozen until the battery is dead (guessing... didn't really wait until the battery ran out).
Removing the battery and re-inserting and the phone will work, typically showing a big hit on the battery level.
I assume there's some CPU activity going on because I can feel the area near the camera warmer (not hot) than the rest.
I opened this topic to follow the issue raised on this post:

It happened a few times on the last days. The phone seems to be off, but in complete dark I can see a bit of back light. Once happened during sleep and it even registered screen on activity (weird).
Never really tried connecting it to the computer, always removed the battery right away. =(

At least amrs seems to be having this issue.

My phone had a hang yesterday and again today. Running 0104 nightly. Just a black screen with a faint backlight, no reaction to buttons or anything.
Today I managed to get some info finally as to what happens. Turns out the phone didn't crash, I was able to get in via adb, so dmesg and logcat attached. Also I noticed from the process list system_server was a zombie. As I understand it, system_server is a fairly major part of Android so that's probably a problem...

Maybe with more reports we may understand what is causing this crashes.

I didn't have any problems for a few days, after installing 0112 nightly. Turns out I didn't have any deep sleep either according to Better Battery Stats. A reboot fixed that but then I got a crash quickly again. I realized weather info was odd in the lock screen so locked and tried to unlock and nothing. Couldn't even get in with adb shell this time.
So I guess deep sleep has something to do with this. I've been using the hotplug CPU governor most recently but I think this happened with interactive too.
I'm all stock... kernel, CPU/GPU settings and so on... so I guess that it shouldn't be related to that.
Do you know of any good debugging app to eventually save some sort of evidence of the crash?
I tried plugging the USB cable on the last crash but the computer/adb didn't detect the phone.
Me and my partner both have HTC ONE x's, Endeavouru, round a similar age, but her phone recently started draining battery.
Both running ARHD, with the same kernels. First I checked if apps were responsible, wiped and reflashed the ROM and kernel both.
This did not work, so then checked battery health with *#*#4636#*#* - showing the battery was in good health, but then replaced the battery anyway to eliminate any possibility of this being the culprit.
Now it's still giving massive drain - a charge up to 100% will last up to 5 hours of standby, with only mobile network activity turned on, all other radios off.
Been throughout the forums and other websites looking for any solutions to this problem but not striking any luck. Tried resetting the radio, changing it to LTE (Not even available where we are), and back etc, as one thread suggested, turned radio completely off and back on. Tried super cleaning the system before reflashing the ROM, tried a different kernel, an AOSP ROM, and still no luck.
It just all of a sudden started to do it, similar conditions to my phone, which makes it harder to pinpoint.
Any new idea's to bring to the table, open to any.
nb: Posted in wrong forum earlier, my bad.

Well an update to this thread...
Went to install wakelock on the phone after having it turned off for a few days, the battery was drained and now every time I try charging, regardless of what I use re ac/computer/original/aftermarket charging equipment, all it does is heat up to about 58 degrees C and stop charging - with phone off or on.
Sucks as it seems to be a manufacturing fault, but since I've rooted it, and purchased 2nd hand, looks like one for the rubbish bin

check if your cpu is stuck at 100% or 1.5 ghz in trickstermod and could you post a screenshot of wakelock detector?

Surely if it's the light sensor it would be irrelevant if it was turned off or on though, same with the CPU. I'm going to spend some time getting power into it today, charge, then put in freezer to cool it, and repeat.
Once some power is into it I'll start with suggestions, one at a time, and get some screen shots up, and logs of the current drain.
Thanks for the help so far, would be good to get it going again, instead of having a $350 paper weight.
An update:
Changed the recovery from Philz recovery to an older CWM recovery program, and now possibly just through coincidence the battery isn't super heating to the point it needs to live in the freezer to charge.
I have restored to stock ROM, and have a couple of pictures of the battery history, which are neither here nor there, apologies as I wiped a lot of things off, including my WLD pictures from the ARHD ROM.
I purchased trickstermod and had a look into the CPU settings, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Also turned on the dev options of graphic CPU usage on the homescreen - not really showing unusual signs of anything. About to flash the original recovery on and email HTC to see if they might feel sorry enough to accept it as a straight manufacturing defect, without evidence of where we purchased it (as it was a second hand phone off the net).
subscribing to this thread - I have the exact same issue. I have installed CM11 and ParanoidAndroid. Torched and Bubba kernel... turned off lots of stuff.
I have whatsapp, soundcloud and facebook as the only background running apps. not sure what's the issue

Hello!
I also have a similiar issue.
I noticed, after a while, that my phone keeps dying under 16-18 hrs on idle from full charge.
I thought it1s the battery, since my HOX is 2 years old. Someone suggested, to try some battery monitoring, so i got the battery monitoring widget, after for like 3rd time, the phone turned off overnight.
The problem, is the Light, and the acceleration sensors... they won1t let the phone go to sleep.
I tried turning off locations, and such, also auto rotation, and my back light was never on auto. it is set around 30%
Still, these sensors run, and consume battery like crazy. This started about 2 weeks ago.
I have a stock rom. not the original, since i thought flashing a custom rom might solve this, so i tried ViperX 4.1.1, the problem was still there.
After that, i reflashed an untouched original HTC JB rom.got the latest OTA update, and the problem is still there...
I don't have any apps running in the background, that should require these sensors to run. i always clear multitasking also.
Have Wifi on, but that barely consumes anything.
Any idea, i know this started on Gingerbread, and was supposedly fixed in ICS, but it's still happening to some ppl.
Any help would be appreciated!

I have checked all the sensors in the testing menu by dialing *#*#3424#*#* and they all turn off and on as required properly. I noticed yesterday that I've actually burnt out the charging system as it has got too hot at one point, so no use pursuing anymore. I will stick with my HOX until it too breaks in some way. Received an email back from HTC saying "Not under warranty, not our problem" after asking if they had had any phones with similar issues pass through.
About 3 days ago the battery drain on my Nexus 5X went crazy. I found out that the "app" Android System do not let the phone sleep and keeps it awake all the time. That is why the phone can not even get into doze mode and drains about 8% per hour when the screen is off. I tried restarting the device and also force stopping the Android System. Both without any succes. Do anybody knows what to do with it? Or should I just wait if it will go back to normal? I do have screenshots, but the XDA will not let me post outside links...
Interested about that.

I am having the same problem. It occurs randomly, most often when I have just charged the phone and removed the cable. If i am correct, a wakelock under the name *backup* is holding the phone awake, it might be the same in ur case. I've done a research on this, turned out this is unfixable unless you have some sort of wakeblocker, which my current rom lacks of. I tried using xposed with its modules, but it gave me a ton of bootloops and i gave up on it. The only temporary fix for me is to reboot the phone. Until it happens again. No clean flash nor anything i have tried seemed to have helped. I even tried disabling all services and receivers from Android System, no luck again. That is one hefty problem

I have exactly same problem with wakelock. It happens only after charging. Everything is OK after restart.
It has happened to me sometimes on my old HTC One X and I think it happened also once on this 5X, but it was just for about a day or so. It disappeared itself with time, I didn't do anything with it then. Now it's been 6 days, I have to charge the phone twice as frequently and neither the reboot nor the force stopping everything works. I really don't know what to do in this case. Also this phone isn't rooted yet, so I can't just flash the system again as on my old HTC... I'm still hoping it will disappear by itself asap
But do you anybody have any other ideas what can I try to do to stop that crazy system app?
same problem here...
had the phone about 350 hours with no restart and i thought i would give it a reboot..
same think happened...android system was going from 2% to 20% in a matter of hours..
installed an app called GSam Battery monitor..showed me the phone was not going in deep sleep (Doze mode) at all...
here is an attachment if anyone can understand better than me..
I posted a similar thing in the battery life thread. Very odd really as I've had the phone a few months now but it also only started with me a few weeks ago. Really can't think of a trigger for it... I doubt the April update would have been significant enough to create an issue, but who knows.
Exactly. After about 4 months of working excellently and about 400 hours without restarting, after charging it's immediately goes into this "mode" when the Android System won't let the phone sleep. Even restart didn't help me, but now after 3 restarts it goes to normal. One bad thing... after every single one charging, every time I put the phone on the charger it goes crazy again and I have to restart the phone after every cutting of of the charger... it makes me really angry when the phone is only 4 months old and even the "okay" battery life isn't that good on this phone... God I just need to find a solution, that's insane...

THIS!!!!
the phones battery life was a big "ok i can just play a bit less so i can get through the day and IF anything happens i know it has fast charge so ok"
nowadays i have to reboot after EVERY charge....
p.s.
anyone that faces the same problem but WITH mai's security update? do we have any hope that it will fix that problem?
Not sure if it's a one-off, but I decided to uninstall the game "8 Ball Pool" by miniclip as it appeared on my battery usage stats when I'd not opened it in days. Since then, even after a recharge, the phone seems to be going to sleep as normal.
I'll monitor to see how things go but perhaps it could genuinely be a rogue app. It's a little disappointing that doze wouldn't block the keep awake requests - I thought that was one of the main purposes of it.
The same issue occurs for my Nexus 5X: after device disconnected from a charger, Android System process starts to keep device awake until next restart. As I understand from comments above factory reset does not help to solve a problem. Has anybody met the similar problem with custom ROMs/kernels?

Hmmm, sorry for offtopic clarification... as of now I'm little bit confused about Android versioning, especially it's unclear for me: whether you mean as latest update: 6.0.1 or april security patch or model build number (like MHC19Q, which is currently on my device)?
I guess it must be April security patch. Some kind of problem in the Android System app that comes with the security patch. I don't really know in this case, but as I've said, it hasn't happened once before the April patch

I rolled back to MHC 19J. The April MTC19T Build cut my battery life in half. Android system being the top culprit. Deep sleep never going over 80%. Horrible idle drain. Would drain 15% over night while i slept. Exact same setup as before, no new apps. SOT went from about 5 hours to not even 3.

Same issue. After running it for few months flawlessly, the Android System is keeping the device awake and only restarting it solving the problem temporarily. Charging the phone again starts the wake lock..
Most disappointing is it's the 'Android System' that causing the problem. If any app/game is linked to this, it should have been appeared as the culprit but unfortunately it's that 'System'.
Waiting for solution.
Samsung users are having the same problem.
I have found something on my Samsung Galaxy S6 in regards to 'Android OS' killing the battery. It might be the same for Nexus users, I've confirmed this on a Moto G 2015 running the latest MM update and on a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. By latest update, I mean the April security patch.
Check this and this.

Sorry for the late response mate. I have no issues with android system draining battery in MTC19J.
Hi Friends,
In my SM-G920P, my screen wakes up automatically every 10-15 seconds. This doesn't happen 24X7 but whenever it happens it continues for a long time and stops automatically. I have disabled gesture wake up, raise to wake etc and also tried safe mode but all in vain. Disabled all notifications, turned on airplane mode also but same issue. Tried Wake Lock powermanager which helps some times but it drains the battery. The issue started when I flashed official 7.0 ROM after rooting my device. So as you can see the knox is broken and can't take to Samsung.
I love my S6 a lot. Any suggestion would really help.
Thanks

The good news is that it is not your phone or the operating system. I am pretty sure that there will be one app that turns out to be the culprit.
Wakelock Detector should help you find that.
If that doesn't work, wipe everything and reinstall. Here are instructions to install: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73232175&postcount=352
