[Q] Lg G3 with Lollipop: Custom kernel & Overclocking ? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody,
Recently I bought a new smartphone - LG G3 (D855) 32GB with Lollipop 5.0.
Until now I've always had Apple devices and I was very deep into jailbreaking and stuff like this.
So now I want to understand a little bit more about how this kind of things are done in android. I've already read a lot (tons of stuff in different websites and forums) but unfortunately I wasn't capable of finding the information I need.
I've already rooted my phone but now I want to overclock it because I feel it a bit laggy from time to time and that really annoys me. The thing is that in order to overclock the phone I need a custom kernel (as far as I know). And here comes the problem - to flash a custom kernel I also need a custom recovery (correct me if I'm wrong) and from the things I have read untill now I could not find a reasonable and simple enough solution of doing so.
So the question is as follows: Can I put a custom recovery on my LG G3 running Lollipop in order to flash a custom kernel and how, or if not is there a way of flashing a kernel without recovery or even overclocking without custom kernel at all on Android 5.0 ?
Here are some specifications of the phone if there is a need:
Android version: 5.0
Baseband version: MPSS.DI.2.0.1.c1.13-00048-M8974AAAAANPZM-1
Kernel version: 3.4.0
Build number: LRX21R.A1421650137
Software version: V20h-EUR-XX
And yes I know that I can do it by downgrading to KitKat but I don't want to. So I am asking all this things especially for Lollipop.
Sorry if there was already a post like this but as I told you I've read really thousands of stuff already and couldn't find working solution, so I decided to ask since this could be helpful for others as well.
Thanks for all your help and answers in advance.
Best regards and I hope we will solve the problem

First you'll need to root your phone. The easiest method of doing so is w/ avicohh's one-click script...
[Guide] Root LG firmwares (KitKat / Lollipop) - One click script
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/guide-root-lg-firmwares-kitkat-lollipop-t3056951
Next is to install a custom recovery, the easiest method of which is via TWRP Manager...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jmz.soft.twrpmanager
And custom kernels are flashed via recovery. Just point TWRP to the download directory on you internal or external SD that contains the file to flash.

I have already rooted my phone, so we can skip this step.
The problem is that I can't install a custom recovery. I actually even tried your method with the TWRP Manager but nothing happened (the app actually installs the recovery but when I reboot into recovery, there is nothing happening, just a black screen), so I had to reinstall my stock recovery again.
Is there some other method to install a custom recovery or am I doing something wrong?

Today I tried to do some more research in order to find something but there is nothing on the Internet.
Please help

So finally I found a way to install a custom recovery. Now when I already have it I have flashed a custom kernel (rin kernel) on my Lg G3 running Lollipop 5.0 in order to overclock.
The problem is that when I try to overclock the phone with some CPU app like "setCpu" it actually shows me that I can set the max value to 2,7 but when I click it nothing happens. The device still sits on the default 2,5.
Please help.

[Q] Ok this is doing my head in.. LG G3 L5.0 rooted install

Rito guys,
I have used IOS for the past many years and bought a LG G3 855 (australia 16g, this is the international on yea?) 2 days ago.. I quickly found a website that guided me through the LG Flash tool method of updating to the leaked L version D85519H_00 and away I go! Now what I didn't realize is and as this website explains http://www.androidpit.com/lg-g3-android-update that rooting the device is nye impossible now...
SO, after more and more searching around I have found I needed to flash back to kitkat 4.4.2 and then do a TWRP backup thingy from this install method of a modded/rooted L http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/rom-lollipop-rooted-rom-skin1980-t2936022 then install the rom through recovery? I have had no luck (mainly because I don't what half of the terminology means) doing the modem/backup with TWRP to begin with as most methods need the device rooted (which I can't do now after my first install of L5.0..)
Can anyone clearly paint a picture for me on the steps needed to achieve rooted L5.0?
OR
Is it worth keeping the L5.0 leak version (non rooted) and when LG releases their official version just do a software update and wait for someone to figure out how to root that? (I'm assuming here I can just do a software update on top of the leaked version to upgrade to the LG official here?)
Cheers and thanks for your time guys I'm super excited to be an android user now and no idea what I wasn't sooner!
Jacob
We need to have Android 4.4 KK
Installation:
1. We must do ROOT -
2. Next, you install TRWP
3. We go into Recovery (TRWP)
4. Recovery enter the Wipe and enable - Cache, Data, and we do wipe Dalvik
5. Wipe Exit tab
6. We are entering a Instal
7. We are looking for our files and install one after the other (without rebooting):
1. ROM
2. SuperSU
8. REBOOT SYSTEM
I think I understood everything
L 5.0 + root http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/stock-t2961073

Hey thanks for your fast reply!
Your instructions look spot on for a normal situation but as I mentioned at the start I can not root my device since I installed the leaked L5.0 version, apparently it makes it a lot harder to do..
Also I should mention I can't get MTP working so it makes it even harder to do the TWRP backup without rooting the device first.
This is the only option at this time to have root on 5.0

Flash 4.4.2 KDZ. Root it. Install twrp, etc etc etc.
Yeah mate your best bet would be to use the LG Flash Tool 2014 (Readily available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2797190 ) to flash back your Android 4.4.2 KitKat ROM if you want to root it, since without using a custom kernel and then flashing a custom recovery that supports that rooted kernel, we can't yet achieve vanilla root on Android L. Make sure if you flash back an older ROM you do it via CSE (CSE wipes all data on the phone, used for major upgrades, but a normal flash just attempts to update the system and keep your data, useful for small software updates).
Your other option would be to do as NZfoR said above and flash back down to 4.4.2, and then re-flash the already rooted and bumped ROM and kernel he linked you to, therefore giving you root on Android L.
That being said, although we can't get one yet, we've got the best devs in the world here on XDA, so it won't be long before someone finds a bug in the boot-loader that allows us to achieve permanent root (In fact I believe that someone already has and is just working on a way to exploit it).
We've also got the best community here, if you need help for pretty much anything regarding Android and specifically your G3, there's always at least 1 person here who knows how to solve it, so ask questions!
Good luck, you won't regret coming over to the sweet-side of mobile phones
Cheers guys! I had tried downgrading to kk 4.4.2 and tried to stumproot but it said my software had been patched SBD could not be rooted. Like I said I think installing the leaked L5.0 its changed something making it harder to root now..
I'm finding it hard to do the TWRP backup 1. I don't even know what it does or how to do it 2. I've had 2 days android experience haha... Keen to teamspeek or Skype call iDefalt?

[Q] First timer

I've been checking up on custom ROMs for the LG G3 F400k for a while and now that Lollipop has released and there are roms with Lollipop out there, I've decided to try and use a custom rom on my phone.
I've looked at the huge guide threads but it's just really overwhelming for me lol, can't seem to find what I want/need.
Phone: LG G3 F400K
Android Version: 4.4.2
Software Version: F400k10u
Rooted: Never
So I wish to do the following:
1. Create a full backup of everything thats on my phone - So if something goes wrong, I can revert back to what I had
2. Put CloudyG3 2.0 ROM on my phone, as it supports F400K
3. Possibly add a custom kernel
Now what programs do I need to complete all the above tasks? If possible, it would be really nice if you can provide me with links to guides that will help me do exactly what I wrote above.
Thanks in advance!

First of all you have to ROOT your device with either Stump Root ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/orig-development/root-stump-root-lg-g3-sprint-verizon-t2850906 ) or PurpleDrake ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/root-root-lg-g3-easily-purpledrake-lite-t2821000 )
Then you have to download to your device the right TWRP img for F400K from this Thread Bump! ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-...mp-unlock-lg-g3-twrp-d852-d852g-f400-t2900614 ). Scroll down and find the download link and choose F400K. Flash this with Flashify, an app that you can download for free from Play Store, it needs root permission.
You now have Custom recovery and are ready for flashing. Enter TWRP Custom Recovery and before doing anything else go to Backup and check everything. I suggest using an SD Card here, so for storage select external sd card.
There's this guy that made a youtube video for all of this, go check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-jXW89uD4o
Good Luck.
Thank you! In the meantime I figured it out, it wasn't easy because there is a lot of outdated info out there, so hard to find the things I actually needed but this is what I end up doing:
installed adb, rooted with purpledrake, installed a bunch of required apps,, like supersu busybox, etc and right now I'm doing an online nandroid backup with twrp recovery.
I hope that this is the last thing I have to do before I can move on to the ROM part.
After I got the rom I still need to figure out how to get all my sms/app/contacts data on the newly installed ROM
Thanks for your reply btw, much appreciated!

Rooting Stock ROM

Guys,
I need help regarding root of Stock ROM Lollipop. 5.0.
I unlocked boot loader, flashed twrp recovery but when it comes to flash rooting tools (Android revolution hd rooting tool) it does not flash and does not root the ROM. In recovery it says failed/ unable to mount cache ...
Am I doing something wrong or it the zip file which may not be compatible with stock rom?
Do you guys have any zip file which can root stock rom or the best would be if there is any rom already rooted but not modified. I like to stick to stock rom but want to get rid of bloatware.
I appreciate any advice, help or solution which may you provide to me.
Please do not ask me to search on google or XDA because I already did it and bother many people in the specific forums. As a result that they could not provide me with the solution I was forced to write in Help& Troubleshooting forum.
all the best,

Don't use a tool.
Download the update SuperSU.zip from here and flash it in recovery.
After the flash, find SuperSU in your app drawer and open it. You will be prompted to update binaries. Do that.
That's it. You are rooted.

I second that. The tool used by the OP is probably not updated to work on Lollipop.
Also, OP should make sure to run an updated version of TWRP (2.8.7) as anything but the last few (several?) versions of TWRP will not work on the Lollipop hboot.

Twrp on 21r lollipop update

Hate to make a new thread but couldn't find an answer in any other ones. I'm rooted D850 running latest lollipop from att 21r update. How can I install twrp without getting the security error on lg screen? This security error stops os and recovery from booting. I tried using twrp manager already.
Have you already tried pushing the 2.8.7.0 bumped version of recovery via adb?...
TWRP 2.8.7.0 for LG G3

you just don't want to listen or to let people help you
Why isn't twrp manager working ?
- We used bump to "sign" our kernel and recoveries to the bootloader see them as legit.
That was on kitkat. What do we do now? We downgrade the bootloader to kitkat bootloader, we use bumped recoveries and kernel.
So by using twrp manager TWRP will NOT work for you, but you will be still able to boot.
- Why didn't autorec work for you ?
IT DID. You had twrp but it couldn't boot since your system wasn't bootable with the "less recent" kernel provided in autorec.
-How can we fix it ?
1. download flashify(you have to be rooted)
2. click backup kernel -> and let it upload to dropbox
3. send me the link
4. wait 10 minutes, I upload autorec d850 21R(which then will work also on lower versions)
PROFITS:
-you don't make 10 threads
-you help other people out
-you don't get a unbootable android
CONS:
-none

I answered you to send me a backup of your kernel. So we can also help other people.
Other thing that would work is simple flashing any custom d850 kernel.
EDIT: nevermind, I'll find it somewhere else.

Desperately need root for lg g4 h815 on 6.0 without unlockbootloader

Iam requesting for developers can someone please keep provide on root for lgh815 for locked boot loader on 6.0 instead digging for unofficial boot loader unlock, that will be thankful.
i dream ,i hope so much too...
i have already asked what happen if we flash a zip MM rooted firmware (or imperium) with Chainfire's flashfire ....when we have a rooted Lollipop firmware and an eventual factory-reset with physical buttons...
but never have had answers ...

Its not possible because on the rooted rom, the kernel its modified and when a locked bootloader phone tries to load it on boot...it will fail...
But i believe , in time, someone are going to find a hack/exploit to achieve root on locked phones
I already tried that it leads to bootloop...
i knew about this kernel problem....
but the main question is : why flashfire seem incapable to flash a "full" firmware (kernel included) like lgup/bridge/ota.... ?
And Chainfire have anounced that his flashfire is "the future" for to flash roms and firmwares ...
@xoxey it's nice to have tried
there are options that you have missed ? eventualy...
Root on 6.0 without unlocking bootloader is literally impossible because in Marshmallow Google changed their policy and now to root it you have to have modified boot.img flashed onto your device, original boot image will not allow you to have a root access or use custom recovery. It would be easy to just grab a boot.img of random kernel like SimpleGX or Imperium and flash it via fastboot, but there is a problem - bootloader basically loads your boot and if it locked it will load it only if the boot is signed, unmodified, although it leads to a bootloop. Only way to do this is to unlock it officially, and then, if you don't want to downgrade to 5.1, grab a boot.img of a kernel, flash it via fastboot (because stock boot will not allow you to flash recovery due to causes I have mentioned above), flash the recovery via fastboot, then to void bugs flash the full kernel (any of them, can be different than the one you used before, it just has to be full package) and then simply flash SuperSU v2.67. There is no different possible way to root it on 6.0.
