The instructions are largely the same as doing it through command prompt on windows. Use Terminal, every time it says to use the command fastboot or adb you have to put a "./" in front of it. Thats dot slash and no quotes. Use the HTCDev method to unlock the bootloader, and when you start the process I used "all other models" because the token it gave me with using the actual model didn't flash right. After you unlock [unlocking will factory reset your phone] flash a custom recovery and from there use recovery to root.

stuck rooting

I have followed the instructions carefully and have unlocked my phone etc all the way down to
In cmd:
•fastboot recovery1.img
5.boot into recovery through bootloader and Install the ROM you placed on the SD card, (via install zip fileselect the rom zip)
6.Reboot the phone, ensure the rom is working fine and you have root access you can test this by turning on usb debugging then:
Now If I enter the bootloader and choose " recovery" the phone restarts, then I am presented with a black screen and an icon of the phone and an exclamation mark in a triangle.
I have searched the forums but am not finding anything useful in there, except a guy who was stuck even more than me.
BTW i am still unsure why I had to open cmd and run recovery1img ???
I take it recovery mode must allow me to install the ROM .. mainly DHD_WWE_3.12.405.1_STOCK_rooted_by_nitr00 which the guide said ?? since I tried doing this while the phone was on and it's just a zip file which opens up with a few files inside, non of which seems to be an installer? I presume that recovery mode will actually manage to install right from the zip?
Please help with this as I have totally hit a wall and cannot understand the icon with the exclamation mark I mentioned! am just totally stuck.
What guide?

That is stock recovery...that means that you are still on the stock recovery and if you already unlocked the device you should flash a custom recovery.

am i correct in thinking the instructions for flashing a new recovery aren't in the guide? could you point me in the right direction please?
Here is what i did with my device "noobie here"
1. Unlock my bootloader via htc dev
2. Once my bootloader is unlock i use "easy ace root tool"
tool link is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2169518
3. Run the tool as administrator
4. Phone is rooted
hope it helps :fingers-crossed:

the command is wrong, it should be fastboot boot recovery1.img, you'll use fastboot flash later onwards

Neither response helps i'm sorry. The easy root tool is an app that performs the same function as the guide, but is no longer supported and this:

* Only helps with that one aspect of the problem. not the fact that Typing Su results in a response saying you do not have permission. Which is what the topic of the thread was.

what exactly are you trying to do?If you have an unlocked bootloader, just flash a custom ROM and a boot.img.

i followed the same steps and basically recovery1.img is the new ClockWorkMod Touch Recovery and recovery.img is an old version of CWM modded specifically for the tools given to you in the guide. The guy who made the guide is really lazy so he made a typo and didn't bother to correct it. Instead of 'fastboot recovery1.img' it should be 'fastboot flash recovery recovery1.img'. This flashes CWM to your phone and from then on you can choose whether you want to S-OFF or just leave as S-On and flash boot.img everytime you want a new custom ROM. I had a bad experience with that guide so if i was you i would just flash the boot.img and then install the ROM given through recovery.

Just go straight to S-off, you will have to use sunshine to s-off, it will also unlock your boot loader in the process :good:

Control / C is the wrong way to copy the info, dos works differently, once you've marked the info in the dos window, just hit enter to copy it, and then paste it the normal way, either with a mouse right click or control + V into the window at the HTC dev site.

I have restored my ATT M8 to stock from unlocked and rooted and now I have a couple of problems.
First, SunShine says my phone needs to be rooted to proceed and directs me to the HTCDev site to unlock the boot loader.
When I go through the process to re-unlock the bootloader, I can't get into the Android directory at the command prompt.
As the screenshot shows, it looks like there might be a problem when I boot into the boot loader.
I've also included a screen grab of the command prompt and directories.
I no noob when it comes to flashing, etc, but this has me hitting my head on my desk!

is your phone stuck on that screen or do you actually get to the point where it says fastboot usb on the screen ?
First there is no folder called /Android there ! Its called .Android and that's usually a sign that its a hidden dir !
Create a "normal" Android dir which you have admin rights to also !
Open a command prompt from the folder and check again.

No fastboot option in Download Mode

So I'm trying to unlock bootloader using this tutorial:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/general/guide-root-install-twrp-htc-one-m9-t3061133
But I get stuck when typing the "fastboot" line, since there is no fastboot option in my Download Mode.
M9 with Marshmallow update.
Any help will be appreciated.

You need to be in download mode for the instructions to work.
There is a video of the procedure:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0R6iZ3GtVnQ
Good luck!
That's my actual problem
The procedure shown in the video is made for devices that already have bootloader unlocked, but mine isn't, and the reason is step 2 shown in htcdev.com:
I don't have any fastboot option to highlight.
Also, when typing the "fastboot" command in terminal, I get the "unknown command" message.

U do have fastboot.exe in the folder where u start the command prompt?
Here is another guide:

Oh dear, now another problem since I'm on a Mac. :silly:
I'll get a windows laptop and do as you say, hopefully I'll do it right, otherwise please guide through the process.
It was a lot easier back in the One X days...

So I'm stuck in bootscreen with the red text "this build is... bla bla...", the phone powers off, and then again to the same screen with the same message.
What did I miss?
Also, I was following the steps in the video without reading, and accepted that TWRP root my phone, despite the code saying not to. Maybe that's the problem?
Installed TWRP 2.8.5.0 and SuperSU 2.76
I've already managed to unlock bootloader, because it says: System modified, *unlocked*, s-on
U are already unlocked.
Now, restore a backup, if u did one in TWRP.
If not, try installing a custom ROM, ARHD or Maximus are closest to stock.
Good luck!

yas i do this whole process but my devices do not opne after htc logo
what i do?
Rename the RUU to
2PSTIMG.zip
Copy 2PSTIMG.zip to a external sd card.
Put sd card in phone if not allready.
Then do
Boot to download mode. Vol down + Power.
It should say file found hit volume up to flash.
Hit the volume up button.
When phone reboots to download mode again. Because it probably will.
Hit volume up again to flash entire ruu.
NOW YOU ARE BACK IN BUISNESS..
Say Thanks.

Just did it on a T-Mobile branded Desire 530. Worked great once I remembered to reboot after pushing the new file.
The phone has to be rooted, obviously, since you need su access to push/pull that file.
I'm stuck at dd if=/sdcard/mmcblk0p36new of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p36
'dd' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
Is the error i get after su

That's a windows error message. You have to be in adb shell for any of this to work. When you type "adb shell" it should connect to your phone and give you a different prompt. Only then can you issue commands to the phone.
(You have to have usb debugging enabled on the phone to use adb at all, and the phone has to be rooted for the required su command to work)
So, did you code this:
adb push mmcblk0p52-rfg_8-UnLocked.txt /sdcard/mmcblk0p52new
adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/mmcblk0p52new of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p52
exit
exit
Then just reboot? My 530 keeps locked ;/
Well, I went through the whole documented process... rooting the phone first, pulling the old file, comparing it to be sure it's the same as the 'locked' one posted (it was), pushing the new 'unlocked' file and rebooting. Once you've pushed the 'unlocked' file and put it in the correct place, the phone should be unlocked on reboot. If it doesn't work, I don't know what to tell you other than to try again and follow the instructions to the letter. If you're getting error messages along the way, resolve those.

I also read the whole post then do the process normaly even with more than one M9 (m9 ok, 530 no)
I try on old OS nothing then update to the latest version 1.36.531.4 and nothing as well.
I put the stock ruu, unlock bootloader, recovey then root and all process work fine but no unlock, its keep saying i can use the unlock t mobile tool to unlock and show sim with the padlock ;/...
Would you please upload your old and new mmcblk0p52 please?
If i cant unlock i am thinking on super cid and flash others ruu ;/
Thanks for your time!
This are my 3 files...
mmcblk0p52-rfg_8-UnLocked.txt
mmcblk0p52old
Locked.txt
For those like me did this on HTC M9 and thought it will be the same here a resume of my issue...
HTC M9 unlock partition are mmcblk0p52-rfg_8-UnLocked
And the Desire line are mmcblk0p36-rfg_8-UnLocked
I try the correct method using the whrong partition unlock file, stop a little to READ and it works fine now.

The original thread only mentioned p36. Why are you now discussing p52?
In order to simply SIM unlock the 530, p36 is the partion we should be replacing, correct?
Or does it vary on this phone, and p52 needs to be overwritten?
Could somebody please confirm?
Thanks

Help with flashing stock recovery

Yesterday I had the excellent idea of rooting my phone and installing a custom ROM. The process was quite easy though it took me like 2 hours. After I was done I found that I didn't really like the Lineage OS on my M8 as it was draining my battery way too fast. So I decided to go back. This is where the problems began. Since being a total noob when it comes to rooting and flashing on Android I had no idea I had to make a backup of my OS(only did one of my data using HTC Sync Manager). I was able to find one online in the end. But when I wanted to update OTA to 6.1.0 it just boots into Recovery Mode. After some research I found out that I also have to flash a stock recovery file. I allegedly did that using a tool I found online (One M8 All in One Kit 2.0). But still I am unable to update OTA. I just want to go back to Marshmallow.
Would really appreciate some help here guys
Thanks.

You could just run an RUU to get back to stock, since you already flashed the stock backup and have lost data now.
What does it say next to "OS" in your bootloader? With that information I can link you to the proper RUU

I don't quite understand how this RUU works. Will it still say in bootloader "Software status:Modified" after I do this? And will I have to unroot it again or how does it work? Cause it still says Unlocked in bootloader.

I forgot to ask if it said S-On or S-Off in your bootloader. I'll give full instructions for both.
Download this RUU.zip and place it into your adb/fastboot folder
Boot to bootloader and plug your phone into your PC, then get into fastboot
If you are S-On, enter fastboot oem lock That will relock your bootloader. If you are S-Off you can skip this step
Then: fastboot oem rebootRUU wait until the phone boots to a black screen with HTC on it
then fastboot flash zip **drag and drop the RUU.zip here**
When the flash is done, fastboot reboot and you'll be back to stock, unrooted

This is exactly what I was talking about. I don't understand how to do those "bolded" instructions. Does it have something to do with the Android SDK? I know I read something.
I am on S-ON btw.

So there is the main problem with toolkits. I never use them and never recommend them. Reason being: they shortcut the learning process, and teach you just enough to get into trouble. Then you are stuck with no idea how to recover.
Knowing how to use fastboot (at least on a basic level) is absolutely mandatory in order to unlock the bootloader, and flash custom recovery (for the purpose or root or custom ROM). The manufacturers set it up this way, for a reason. Essentially, if a user doesn't know how to use fastboot, they have no business unlocking the bootloader. The makers of the toolkits bypass this requirement with the intent to make it "easier" for folks to root/ flash custom ROM (the toolkit issued fastboot commands, whether you know it or not). But as already mentioned, it's not a good idea to do that.
I don't blame you. You only know what you know, and we all were n00bs at some point, and had to start somewhere. But my advice to you, would be to learn the basics of what fastboot is about, and how to use it. Plus, there is a lot of nuance here. You actually have to use htc_fastboot to flash the RUU (the "generic" Google fastboot can't handle the large file size). You can get it (as well as the RUU) from the following thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64926626&postcount=6
From there, you need to open the command prompt from whatever folder/directory htc_fastboot.exe or fastboot.exe (respectively) are located. There is a shortcut for doing this:
1) Open folder in Windows, where fastboot.exe (htc_fastboot.exe) is located. Different fastboot installers will install it to different places, so you will have to find it yourself.
2) Hover mouse over the folder, press Shift+Right mouse button. This will open a menu, from which you want to select "Open command window here"
3) The command prompt window will open, and that is where you want to type your fastboot commands.
Another note (and I know this will probably be confusing), I think that you can use htc_fastboot for all the fastboot commands (no need to flip flop between htc_fastboot and fastboot). You just have to use "htc_" before all the fastboot commands. For instance:
htc_fastboot oem lock

I followed those steps but when I tried and flash it it gave me this error "target reported max download size of 1826418688 bytes" and I found no real solution to this online.
On a side note I already had the HTC Sync manager installed and I used it to backup some stuff so I can't uninstall it(according to the guide I have to uninstall it, but I guess that's just a suggestion since uninstalling it shouldn't interfere).
Though I feel like I'm close to succeeding.

Did you use htc_fastboot? The file size error is usually due to using the wrong fastboot (you need to use htc_fastboot, as the "generic" fastboot can't handle the file size).

I've left HTC Sync installed without any issues. Like you said, it's mostly a suggestion.
Also, just a suggestion:but I would recommend to refrain from quoting someone else's long post (like you quoted my last post). I know it is the default when replying, to include the quote. But just delete what you aren't directly replying to (quote few lines at most) to avoid cluttering up the thread with redundant text.

Seems like my pc didn't like that I was using those commands and I had to use \.htc_fastboot . It's all good now. Thank you very much. Have a good day.
