Does anyone know what throughput the card slot has? I plan to buy a class 10 card (48MB/s according to Samsung) and wonder if my phone can even max out the data transfer)

Is that figure read or write speed? I have a sandisk class 10 micro SD card, but I've found, it hardly ever comes close to reaching the advertised speeds. Must of the time, it's between 10-20, once in a while 30+

Since switching from a SanDisk 8Gb class 2 MicroSDHC to a Kingston 16Gb class 10 MicroSDHC (manfacturer part number SDC10/16GB-2ADP) I keep getting problems starting up apps that use the storage slot. For example, when I start CoPilot Live 8, it just freezes and I have to power off the phone, pull out the card, re-insert it and power on again (if I don't re-insert the card then a phone reset doesn't allow me to use the card right away).
Is the TP2 ok with this card, or is the card defective? I don't have problems using it with a USB MicroSDHC adapter.
I might save this card for use with a newer phone, perhaps a HTC Desire or Legend.
I don't know the Kingston, but my Sandisk 16 GB does not make any problems.
I have the SanDisk 16gb and have had no problems at all. Have you formatted your Kingston sd card? Maybe try formatting it on a different computer, or by putting it into a digital camera and using its format function? Hope that helps...

Yes, I've tried formatting the card. It made no difference.
I guess my question comes down to what class card the TP2 supports. I understand that the cards themselves are supposed to be downward compatible with devices that don't support the higher speeds, but some devices might struggle. I don't know what card class is supported by the TP2 (2,4,6 etc). I imagine any class 2 card would be fine, but what is the maximum class the TP2 should be able to support?
I don't believe it's the card because I'm experiencing the same problem. I initially started using the card in a nokia e71. bought the same reader as you: it just freezes and I have to power off the phone, pull out the card, re-insert it and power on again (if I don't re-insert the card then a phone reset doesn't allow me to use the card right away).
I'm using some noname 16gb card I got off eBay. Used it in my Incite and now in my Tilt 2 without issue.
Download trial of Pocket Mechanic Pro and run disk check and for errors. Missing not having two copies of FAT directory onboard causes many problems. Pocket Mechanic Pro is one WM tool really worth having.
Does anyone know if there is a speed limit when it comes to the SD cards for the EVO? I noticed that the 16GB cards that are marketed as EVO are all class 2. Is this what I need to stick with? Or can I pick any 16GB micro card?

You should be able to get anything. Worst case, the card will be too fast for your phone to use at full speed, but it will still work.
I wasn't sure if this belongs in Q&A or in Accessories, so if it's wrong, please move.
I've been reading that a lot of other phones can't make use of a MicroSD card with higher than a Class 6 speeds.
Even if they have a Class 10 Micro SD card, it will only perform at Class 6 speeds.
But writing from computer to MicroSD card (in the phone) can reach Class 10 speeds.
I don't want to spend the extra money on a class 10 card, when it's only going to run at class 6 speeds.
Has anyone been able to find (for certain) that the Evo can make use of any class speeds above 6?
Thanks!
I really hate to bump my own thread, but...
Htc replied to my email.
They say the evo is only capable of reading at class 2 speeds even with a class 10.
Can anyone clear this up for me?
Thanks again.
My Evo made me Swype this from the XDA App.
I am in the same boat as you. I've been searching for an answer on many forums and have found many posts that indicate HTC support representatives testing the EVO up to a class 4 with success. . .
I've also read that people have major problems with 32GB cards.
I have done some personal testing with my EVO and Windows 7 ; assuming the Win7 file transfer screen are close to reliable....cough. I also have USB debugging enabled on the EVO.
Transferring 700MB file:
EVO Samsung class 2, 8GB card ~ 4.64MB/sec (write to card)
Adata class 6, 4GB card ~ 11.8MB/sec (write to card)
I don't have a class 4 card to test with.
Download SD Card Speed Test. My 16gb class 6 checks out as a class 6, and it all runs within the phone.
The only way to find out about class 10 is to have someone with a class 10 card run the test.
Yes the Evo can only as they said, Read at Class 2, however the big thing we are looking for are Write speeds. Which is why we use a higher class. I am using the Wintec 16gb Class 10 card, and i get 9mb/s write speeds to it. And it is also cheap, got mine for 29.99 from the egg.
What speeds should I be getting?
I bought a sandisk 16gb off Ebay. Figured it was safe being "sandisk" and all.
I am getting about:
6mb/s write
19mb/s read
Saw someone pose they got 3 write and 130 read...
can this also be ROM related? They were on magnolia I am on CM7.
It sounds like a reasonable number, I have an older SD card that writes at about 3.5mB/s.
Sounds like a standard Class 2 memory card. Check your uSD card, does it have a little number inside of a circle? If it doesn't it's more than likely a class 2 card.
They categorize most flash-based memory cards by "class" now, the higher the class, the faster the read/write speeds. They have them in multiples of 2's. I have a class 6 8GB microSD from Transcend that I use for my Nook Color and I get on average around 11.5MB/s write speed.
Definitely atleast a class 4. Class 4 is 4Mb/s read speed. The write speed is irrelevant.
I have a class 4 Sandisk as well and it reads at just over 6Mb/s. Not sure on write speed. It was definitely faster than 19Mb/s though. Did you test it using h2test to make sure its a legit card?
Is it advisable to go for the memory card for S3 ? Would it slow the data access speed ?
I am thinking of to get 32 GB memory card, though i am open for 64 GB too provided its not very expensive.
For 32 GB card i found SanDisk, Samsung's own card on amazon, can someone suggest which memory card is better (for 32 GB) and for (64 GB) for Samsung Galaxy S3 (ATT) .
I would recommend SanDisk, from a reputable seller for either size.
Personally, I wouldn't worry about getting a memory card unless you're running out of storage space. External cards will be slower than internal storage, but with a sufficiently high speed card, you won't really notice the difference in most cases.
I wouldn't really worry about brand unless you've never heard of the company (in which case beware).
I only advised SanDisk because of the 64 gb size. I've heard reports of some people having problems. I personally have a 32GB class 10 SanDisk that has been great. I use it as my storage for most everything on device (even my TiBu folder).
I'll take the opportunity to note that an SD card is great for backup purposes. It made getting my newest phone up and running with all my old data a breeze.
Exactly. Tbh, it's the same card i had in my Inspire, which had no usable internal storage. Plus, put everything on the external and if the phone suddenly craps out you won't lose your photos, etc.

thank you all for suggestions:
narrowed down my choice to :

Couldnt decide which to go and whats the difference between these ? Are these even good ones ?
i'm using the 64gb sandisk class 10 with no probs..the only thing i had to do was what other users have reported: reformat to fat32. it's been really fast. it seems to perform a lot better when it's connected in media mode as opposed to the usb mass storage mode in my experience. if u can find one for about 50 bucks, I think it's really worth it.
I grabbed a Samsung Class 10 32 GB card from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005TUQV0E/
From what I can tell it gets the job pretty well. Benchmark speeds are fairly close to the advertised speeds.
Thanks
i am confused between:
SanDisk 32GB Mobile Ultra MicroSDHC UHS-I High Speed Class 10 Card (New Version) with Komputerbay SDXC USB Reader
and
SanDisk Ultra 32 GB microSDHC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card 30MB/s with Adapter SDSDQUA-032G-U46A

I think the mobile ultra is water and shock resistant.

The difference is the Adapter is microSDHC to SD whereas
the USB reader one is a microSDHC to USB.
I got the USB reader since it's USB and can use in anything. The micro to SD you could use for a macbook or for photo/video in camera.
