AFTV needs regular reboots - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hoping to get help with troubleshooting...
My hardwired aftv occasionally has Amazon video/Netflix issues but no problems for 3+ days now.
My aftv on 5ghz runs fine except...
I get into the habit on creating a playlist and falling asleep while it's going. This might be because it doesn't sleep automatically, but the next morning if I try to play a prime or Netflix video I can absolutely GUARANTEE it won't play. It will either show a message stating so or it will try to play but the picture goes on & off black until it just stops. Reboot and it's fixed.
It's getting more annoying because it's every day and this one has boot menu so boot time is significantly slower. I can provide more info if it's needed.
I think I can remedy it not going to sleep but don't think that should matter. Plus this aftv has always needed regular reboots because the sound would cut in & out otherwise. I attributed that to the older tv I'm using. Switching hdmi cable didn't help.
Btw--looking closely I see I still have a folder called "android apps" somewhere around sda/usbstorage even though I now mount to storage/usb/drive1...that folder survived several cwm factory restores. I'm about 90% certain it's not native, I created it but haven't gone ahead and deleted it just in case. It's probably not relevant to my above issues but just want to make sure. It can stay there as long as it's not creating conflicts since its just an empty folder. Probably from when I used stickmount awhile back.

A potential quick solution would be to use something to clear memory. I've been using Fast Reboot (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.greatbytes.fastreboot&hl=en) on all my android devices whenever they start to feel a little sluggish. It doesn't actually reboot the device, but simply clears memory by closing apps out fully. It's helped with Netflix issues before. It's much simpler than constant reboots, but it's not a miracle cure.

Sounds to me like XBMC is never actually closing down, and Android thinks that it's still actively playing video. Only one app can play video at a time in Android, and if you're playing a video in XBMC and attempt to play a video from another app like Netfix, it won't be able to start because XBMC still has the stage with regards to playing video.
Are you launching Netflix/Amazon from within XBMC?
Does it happen after you completely close XBMC, or tell it to force quit in the Android menu?

Thanks. I'll try it. I had an app that scheduled reboots and it didn't remedy the problem but I'm open to any possible fixes.

Those are actually tough questions
I DO have a Netflix shortcut setup in xbmc but rarely use. I'll say lately, for some reason it's been working. Typically though, if I spend awhile in xbmc and then want to go to Netflix or prime, I'll stop the video (if playing), press home then force quit xbmc. This is out of habit because it has such a high fail rate. Of course I don't expect my wife & kids to do all that so that's were it gets more troublesome.
Stopping the video in xbmc is something I do 100% of the time now. I'm very conscious of it but do you think just having xbmc itself running causes issues when switching? I wonder if an app like llama can be set up to kill xbmc when pressing home? Or maybe the app in the post above might help?
I say tough questions because my viewing habits don't follow patterns. I will say it happens less when I force quit xbmc but that's not 100% of the time, probably 70 to 80%.
But one time I can COUNT on it happening is if xbmc idles while I sleep. When I wake up and exit, force quit xbmc...prime and Netflix don't work till I reboot.
Talking now I'm thinking MAYBE clear cache and force quit might help but there's got to be a better way. I've been a little lazy there not looking into that. My other aftv sleeps fine but it's in the living room so I don't leave it playing before going to bed.
I'll try the above app and adjust some settings to try and get it to sleep automatically.

Tried it on my phone. It's a pretty useful app. Do you exclude any apps or do you just use the defaults list on your aftv? Thanks again!

Yes. And this might just be being overly cautious. In the settings you can exclude certain apps. But I went ahead and just pressed fast reboot with default settings and it works fine.
Be nice if you could automate this to be triggered when exiting apps. Or put it on the homescreen for quick access. I guess you could with a launcher.
Very much appreciated! Thanks again!

That's what I'm unsure of. How do you access the settings? You open it, it clears memory and shows you what it's cleared. That's it.
**Edit. Nevermind. I'm assuming you purchased the pro version. It looks like it does have settings to exclude apps and schedule "reboots". I've only ever used the free version.

Yes. It's pro and it is effective for somethings. Unfortunately tonite I found out "simulating" a reboot is not quite the same as rebooting.
As I said, I've just got in the habit of rebooting this aftv before I use it...That's because for as long as I've owned it I've had this seemingly one of a kind issue where the video playing will have the sound cut in & out indefinetly until it gets rebooted. Don't matter if it's Netflix, prime, or xbmc.
It's done this since I bought it with stock firmware, at least 3 different prerooted firmwares and several factory resets. I've tried different hdmi cables.
My other aftv is ok. Only difference is it's hardwired and is connected to a better tv. But my network is solid. All devices, especially streaming boxes are fine.
Anyway. I was optimistic when I saw you could essentially reboot without waiting the 60 seconds or how ever long, to play something. But at least this one glitch still needs a real reboot.
I am happy that it appears to help with transitions from xbmc to Netflix or prime but it looks like I'll still be rebooting regularly (daily at least)
I think I posted about this awhile back but no matter where I look I can't find anyone that has this problem.

Random Restart

So far today, my Evo has reset itself about 4 times. That is within the past hour and a half. I've had it since Monday and had no other issues with it doing this until today. The only app that was added in the past 24hrs was the Wireless Tether for Root app. I don't know what or why this is happening. I've just uninstalled Unrevoked, Superuser Permissions, the Overclock Widget, and the Wireless Tether to see if that is causing the issues. Anyone else have anything similar to this happening?
Also, I changed the "always on mobile data" setting to off yesterday. That increased my battery life dramatically. I was able to leave the phone on for a solid 11hrs with it still having 60% charge left. Then today, before I changed any settings at all, unplugging the phone from the charger for about 2hrs has resulted me in being down to 45% battery. Could mobile data always on being off cause the rebooting issue?
Same thing was happening to me when I unchecked that. Checked it back and all rebooting issues went away.

Since I posted that message I had two more reboots. Just ticked always on mobile data back on and am waiting to see if that stops it...
EDIT: No more reboots since reenabling mobile data always on...weird
I've had the always on data feature turned off since day one to conserve battery life and i had not experienced the random shut offs until yesterday. Since yesterday however my phone has restarted itself no less than 20 times. Several times while I was sleeping so this is defiantly a real problem but I dont think its related to settings. ill be contacting HTC tonight
I have had always data off, ticked it on this morn. And started getting the reset issue...

Random restarts are often indicative of the battery not sitting in properly.
Remove the battery. Scratch up the contacts. Insert back firmly...
I am also having this same issue. I turned my phone off this morning because i wouldn't be using it and then i turned it back on in the afternoon and then my phone just started randomly restarting itself. There is no rhyme or reason to it. It has just been happening all by itself. It has probably happened 10 times in the last 4.5 hours.
I took the battery out for a minute and put it back in to see if it will stop the issue, but i'll have to wait and see. However, when i did turn the phone back on i got a weird pop-up message on the main screen that said something to the effect of, "Operational failure, please use su command." Then it faded away. Anyone know what that means?
As mentioned above, turning always-on mobile back on, took care of my restart issue.

I'm getting the same issue. At first i thought it was ATK, so i uninstalled that. Then I though it was lookout, so I disabled that. But it still keeps happening. I have mobile data off too, but for days, and it hasn't affected it one way or the other.
The odd thing is, I was running xiiLive Lite last night streaming the radio all night, and my phone stayed up the whole time, while plugged in (at least 8 hours).
I don't know what the deal is, but my phone goes about 24-48 hours without a spontaneous reboot, and then it will start doing it 4-6 times a day. Anyone have a good logging tool would be nice, as I'm somewhat new to Android.
Thanks!

I had mobile data off for a few days with no reset issues. Then I installed a few apps from the market (not the ones you mentioned) and then the resets started. I uninstalled the newest apps but the resets kept happening. Then I turned mobile data back on and no more resets in the last 24 hours.
my evo is randomly rebooting and I never modified the settings that some of you are talking about. My also gives me random issues where when i try to open an app it will open for a split second and close? I am also having my phone lock up on me several times a day and i have to pull the battery to reboot it! I took it back to the sprint store and they insisted on reloading the software on the phone and it made no difference.... does anyone have any suggestions or similar issues?

I had the apps closing after a split sec too but I found out that it was for apps that didn't play nice with the snapdragon cpu; like the Gameloft game Nova and a few of their other titles.
for me its stock apps like the navigator, video player etc. I am thinking i might have a defective unit.

Yup! That does sound strange! Did you root your phone? I'm rooted and all the stock apps that I've tried, seem to open and work fine.
nope! not rooted, 100% how it was out of the box. Luckily my pre was still active so i video taped it freezing up and stuff so im going to show the tech at the sprint store so hopefully they can order my replacement.
I also have a fully stock phone, some apps installed, but none recently, and yesterday it rebooted itself, twice more today.
I haven't changed the settings mentioned earlier, and haven't done anything I can think of that would cause the rebooting.
I am also having issues where I can't get an IP address on my wireless network, but I'm not sure it's related. I just noticed these 2 problems in the last 2 days, and it's the only thing I can think of that's out of the ordinary from the weeks prior to this happening.
I think I'll take it to Sprint tomorrow and see what they have to say.
Keep us updated on what happens. It seems to take a day or two for symptoms to start, but when they do it goes crazy rebooting!
...more discussion on this issue has been going on here too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=702379
I'm not a professional android user and don't know much about it yet, but mine's rebooted a few times as well. I haven't rooted my phone but the ONE thing that seemed to have resolved the continuing issue is doing a hard reboot:
Menu > Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset
It's been 4 days and hasn't rebooted since.
EDIT: It's been 6 days now and still no reboots.
Angry Apps Eating my RAM!
I think what everyone is missing here that maybe the root of the problem is low memory.
I'm not talking about storage on the SD card. I"m talking about the memory the OS has to run.
I've fought long and hard with this low memory problem seeing as I have owned a g1 for almost 2 years.
THERE IS NO REASON THE EVO SHOULD EVER GET DOWN TO UNDER 30MB OF SYSTEM RAM!
I equate this issue to the same issue many people had with Windows computers and applications that start up in the system tray! We don't need most apps to run in the back ground on start up just in case I want to use it. The few seconds of time it shaves off of starting up the app is not worth the slower OS boot up (applies to Windows mainly) or the major slow downs they cause the OS's to have.
I don't need Sprint TV running on boot!
When I used a clean slate scene I still have all of these same issues. Random reboots, slow OS and apps, ect.
I have no idea why Android would allow that much RAM to be used for background apps. I don't understand why we have no way to see what programs run on boot unless using a 3rd party app.
Most apps are so crappy that they run in the background all the time and have no way to toggle if they run on boot and I'm not talking about apps that modify something all the time I"m talking about apps that ONLY need to be running once you open them. An example would be Swipe, I understand the need for that app to run on boot. It modifies the OS keyboard and would need to be running in order to work correctly when ever you enter any text field that pops up the keyboard for input.
An example of programs that don't need to be running on boot or should at least give you an option to toggle boot start up are; Sprint Navigation, Sprint Updater (No idea what this is for), Updater (Android?), Sprint Zone, doubletwist, SprintTV Widget (I'm on the clean slate profile with NO Widgets), VoiceMail (I use Google Voice, is this needed?), Sprint Football Live (It's not even Football season!), MP3 Store (I have yet to use on the EVO but is running just in case, thx), as well as many others.
I have 35 apps running in the back ground! WTF? Thanks ****ty app devs and bloatware Sprint!
Have fun try to find options for each app and figuring out each service to know what it's tied to so that you can have a phone that it powerful and run smoothly.
It really shouldn't be this hard or as much of a pain...

This is where I am so lost with Android. I read many blogs saying Android does not need a task killer and using one will only make your system slow down. Well I tried one anyway because it's in my Windows Mobile nature to do so (old habits....). I noticed that I too had 35 or so apps running in the background and I thought that doesn't sound good, I wanna kill them all. But then what Android pros keep telling me is to let them be and that the OS will kill them as needed. But from what you're saying, it sounds like the OS doesn't always do a good enough job. So my confusion and learning process of Android continues......

[Q] Watch-ESPN stopped working

I tried to change the provider in WatchESPN and how I can never get it to go past the first screen. The waiting circle goes around and around and in the end comes back with an error about the network, even though I now that is not the issue as everything else works perfectly. I think it has something to do with me changing the provider. I have tried to remove and re-install but it still does not work. Is there a way to ensure that it has been completely removed and try again as maybe some rogue configuration is being left behind.

I finally got it to work for those with similar problems for the future. I had to go into the file system and delete WatchEspn folder. The Amazon app is still terribly slow and buggy. I sideloaded the Android WatchEspn apk which is much better in performance. Only setback with the Android version is that you need a mouse/tablet to control the app.
Is there any way to mimic the 10 seconds forward and reverse (or any length of customized time) while playing replay events in WatchESPN? Something like the forward and reverse buttons on FTV remote that does the job for Amazon movies/tv? Something where one single click goes forward/reverse a set amount of seconds, while keeping the button pressed gives you the option to scroll through at varying speeds.....

Help diagnosing bugs

I probably posted something very similar awhile back but hoping I might get some help. Since buying aftv in June I've had maybe 2 solid weeks of the smooth experience everyone talks about.
Just days after rooting (the day towelroot came out) I experience buggy behavior that compelled me to factory reset. Back then there was no risk of not getting root back. But it only helped for a little while.
Since then I've installed cwm and did 3 resets. The results were short lived.
Here's a list of all the bugs I can think of
1. Exiting xbmc then using Netflix only works about 50% of the time. Netflix will either not open or fail to play videos.
2. Exiting Netflix then launching xbmc almost always results in xbmc either not launching or launching with errors (web server failed, common cache, etc.)
3. (And this is one I've heard NO one report.) Unless aftv is rebooted before using, about 30-50% of the time the sound will cut in and out on ANY videos be it xbmc, Netflix or YouTube. Reboot fixes every time, but this is very annoying given the high frequency it happens. Now I've just got into the habit of rebooting first thing.
4. I'd given up on putting time into customizing xbmc because the best I can hope for is 2 weeks of stability before I need to start over due to it not launching or consistently launching with errors.
5. Because of #4 I decided to use tvmc. It ran great for awhile then refused to launch. A reinstall fixed it then 2 days later it was the same thing. I asked around but tvmc seems to be working well for others.
I'm currently running with a bare bones setup. Only using 21% of my internal space. Malwarebytes shows nothing.
Sorry about the long post. And I know despite the details it's impossible to diagnose what the issue is. What I'm looking for is advice on how to try and figure this out. How do I get a log going for the aftv itself? Where would be the best place to share a log? Which program would you reccomend? Please be as specific as possible. Thanks.

[Q] SPMC update 14.2.0 + New update Netflix not sleeping

I have been using SPMC since the Ouya, and elmerohueso's thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2790392) at one point he had suggested it since it has android specific fixes that did not make it in the main KODI branch. It just got an update to 14.2.0 and he backported a new Isengard feature, skip steps. I certainly see functionality in this but am looking for a way to disable it, the kodi wiki (http://kodi.wiki/view/Skip_Steps) says the delay can be set to none via the GUI but mine's only allowing me to go down to 500ms, I see an advancedsettings.xml option for seek steps but not for the delay, does anyone know if there is a work around for this or am I the only one getting this?
Second thing, the new amazon update has many nice improvements, but has anyone else noticed the new Netflix no longer puts the FTV to sleep after sitting idle? The old app used to allow the FTV to sleep after sitting idle it would induce the screensaver then sleep. New app just sits on a dim screen forever, its only a problem cause on occasion there have been times where I've fallen asleep to something playing no netflix and the FTV stays indefinitely on and never goes to sleep all night . My question is this, Does anyone know of any tricks to make this happen automagically, through root/llama/scripts anything? It's a minor annoyance, but I have 4 FTV's in my house and my kids like to leave stuff on so I'm constantly having to manually put them to sleep its quite frustrating.
Any help is appreciated! Thanks all!

Applications force close. Slowness in picture access.

Hello everyone
I have been experiencing force close after force on my Pixel 3xl. I ordered my pixel 3xl on launch day. A week after receiving my device I started to receive sluggish and force close after force in several different apps. I have never experienced android behaving this way. I started to notice that the phone would get sluggish when using Android Messages. When I am receiving an MMS message the phone will lag and then the message will come through. After messages started to act up, other apps such as; Flamingo for Twitter, Instagram and Google plus would force close. For starters I don’t run any app killers, or ram management. I thought the December Pie patch would fix the issue, but I still see it on a daily basis. I reset my phone, and less than a week later, I would see this same behavior. The phone is basically unusable. I contacted Google for an RMA. They processed it and the new phone is still acting this way. This is really odd this behavior would be happening to 2 phones. I have reset the new phone from google once. Not only is this behavior odd, but it would be really hard for me to believe I am the only person experiencing this issue. Thought about rooting it but don't know if that would even help.
Side note: I have noticed when in flamingo for Twitter or Android messages that the phone takes awhile to open or back out of a picture. Sometimes a white space will show near the upper part of the phone (both sides of the notch)
Any help would be appreciated.

Sometimes a white space will show near the upper part of the phone (both sides of the notch) Any help would be appreciated.

Two phones exhibiting the same behavior? It has to be something you are adding (user apps and/or settings) as you set the phone back up. You said "less than a week later" you would see the same behavior- but that means for the first week it was acting normal, correct? Try running the phone in safe mode for a good while and see if the situation changes. If the issue goes away it will confirm it is one or more of your user apps is causing the issue. If it remains the same I would flash a factory image from fastboot mode and let the script wipe the phone (don't edit the script). This is different from a FDR (reset). Then when you set the phone back up add any user apps in stages, allowing a period of time between setting them up. Are there any apps you suspect? Any "non-market" apps? Rooting will not help you, so I would leave that variable out of it until you get the problem sorted.

I don't use Facebook or Snapchat, I know those apps are really tough on the ram, so I stay away from those. I don't install apps that aren't from the play store. The weird part is I've installed the same apps from my pixel 2xl. I don't install alot of apps to begin with. Ive researched people having issues with the Android messages app and there is a Google forum for this issue, however I installed Textra and I still see the issue just not as bad. During the last reset, I took days to install flamingo for Twitterand Instagram because I suspected them being the issue. Yesterday, I installed them and I started facing the issue. I uninstalled those 2 apps but the issue persisted. Now, it could be those apps but to me it would be a widespread issue if it we're those 2.
List of apps
Most Google apps. Gmail, maps etc
Instagram
Backdrops
Flamingo for Twitter
Navy Federal
Wells Fargo
Vanguard
Ally
Vip access
Hbo now
Netflix
Showtime
ESPN
Relay for Reddit
Nova launcher

I still believe that because you experience this same issue across two different phones, it is something in your personal setup. No abnormal indications under battery usage or data usage (background or foreground)? As suggested earlier try running in safe mode for an extended period. If the problem is gone, you just work your way through the suspect apps until you find the offending one. You can also try resetting all app settings under System>>Reset options before resorting to a clean flash.

Think Nova launcher. Back it up, uninstall it completely, then see how it goes.
I agree has to be a user app, my 3xl doesn't exhibit this issue. My crappy banking app does this but its very poorly optimized. App devs need to catch up to 9.0

I uninstalled Nova Launcher and did see a slight improvement. The issue came back a few days later though.
What about safe mode?

It's not Nova Launcher. You mention slow picture access so I would be looking at apps in that direction. Any apps consistently FC more than others? Do you use cloud backup for Photos? Do you have any super large photo speres, panos, or RAW photos on your phone?
Edit: another thought would be to run a quick check on the non-Googly apps for "last updated" timestamp on the Play Store. You may be running an older app that hasn't been updated in years and is written with an outdated API.

The only apps force closing more than others are Android messages, flamingo for Twitter, and Instagram. It will start with Android messages, which causes the device to slow down, then the other apps follow by force closing. The device always seems to hang/lag when a group message is coming in. I only back up through Google photos on wifi. I combed through the settings and nothing stands out that could be causing the phone to force close these apps. For now, safe mode has the device working normal.
