Massive Battery Drain On My LG G3 - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
I came across many topics about battery drain on the G3. I am using the international 16GB version of the phone with a software version of 5.0. I get the same battery drain as everyone is complaining about. Its just intolerable. Still even going through every topic on xda, I dont seem to find a solution. Today i am leaving my country for 4 months and wont have time to deal with getting a replacement, so i really hope it can be from the software. I tried everything like factory resets, all battery tips like switching off location and sync.... Believe me everything. Some says it can be kernel wake, but I really dont know what to believe. It starts to become a major issue for this phone and more people are getting that problem. Please if someone has a possible solution that would be great!

Try doing factory reset and not installing any apps for 2 days and then see the battery life.
It might be some app you always install and probably use.

I am currently flashing a stock lollipop all over again, thanks to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785089..... Gonna report on the result ))

Awkwardly, today i am getting that type of battery usage with the v20a version of lolipop, i suppose probably its bugged.

If you do so, please inform me of the results, cause I am planning to do the same thing !! )

I did and upgrade to v20f after the clean flashing of a stock rom and the results are the same. Bad battery life. Dont know what to do anymore honestly.

I have installed chupachups modified stock rom based on lollipop version 20E and also chupachups custom stock kernel and i am experiencing better battery life, but im not sure how much better than being on Kitkat, for your own testing, downgrade to kitkat and do not upgrade to lollipop, see what your battery life is like? or try a stock custom rom and kernel like me.

Yeah i might get back to kitkat but all my backup wont be able to restore on a different version.

I'm going to quote part of Ironass Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide
#1.6 Battery re-calibration
Sometimes, after receiving an update, users complain that their battery is being eaten up. This is quite common as the update can affect the battery chip in the phone, causing it to give unreliable readings. These readings usually self correct over a number of charge cycles however, you can re-calibrate your battery by downloading, free from the Play Store, Battery Calibration and following the simple instructions in the app. This should not be used on a regular basis as the battery should never be fully discharged normally.
After upgrading to 20f, I had massive battery drain on my 855 so I recalibrated the battery . I can say that it helped me a lot.

This sounds good man, but the problem is that i am on lollipop and i am not rooted. So basically i am not able to use that program. Are you rooted on 5.0 ?

I'm not rooted. I'm using lollipop 20f stock. I resetted my phone twice after upgrading. By the way, I upgraded flashing a kdz not an OTA.
here you can find the apk :https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dc.batterycalibrationpro

Yeap, I did the same thing and updated by flashing a kdz file, so i believe than this erases everything on your phone and its not like factory reset, which leaves some data. Battery calibration means that it will delete a system file, but if you flash a kdz this is already done, its not like flashing a custom rom. Weird things are happening to my phone .....Starting to regret that i bought it. Just loosing my time to fix sth, which is not my responsibility, instead of enjoying my device. : ( Sad life
On a side note, do you remember what were you getting as a battery life before calibration and what you get now after calibration ?

after calibration : my screen is set at 65%. just a daily moderated use.
before calibration android Os and android system used above 30 percent of the battery.

But whats your sot time and total time on battery before and after ?

after calibrating:
I have no screenshots before calibration.

Thats some really nice stats...but can you remember what was your sot at lets say 50 percent or when you reach 10 5 percent....

I only remember that my battery drained at a rate of 10% in 3 or 4 minutes. To stop this I would stop manually some apks , like android system or android Os. Doing this helped me a bit until I read about calibrating the battery.
I dont use much my cell. Some calls, checking email, music , YouTube, texting , Facebook, reading the news. No games, no taking pics or shooting videos.

Well, thats look to me like e moderate use )
P.S I did the calibration, hopefully will solve something , cause right now i get a sot of 2 and 30 minutes to a full discharge and i cant stand this anymore.

You can downgrade to kitkat and wait till lollipop gets free bugs.
Good luck.

note 2 update to 4.1.2

hey i was a while ago waiting for the 4.1.2 update of the note 2 n7100 ... i saw a couple of days ago that people are not satisfied with the update and that it is causing problems ,, mainly the " SDS" and others complaining about freezes.
can someone tell me what is the update version that is having this problem??
also have anyone here faced this problem with the update
if your eMMc chip is vulnerable to sds, the 4.1.2 temporaly fix it,also it fix exynos abuse
The problem i have faced since the update is:
The phone will never go on deepsleep, reducing battery life.
Is highly recommended that if your phone is vulnerable to sds upg to 4.1.2
well i checked and my phone is not vulnerable ,, i saw that the update has some new features that seemed to be useful , i will consider updating ...
anyway thanks bro
There are no problems with 4.1.2, it has several small improvements. Never had reboot or freeze or anything wrong happen. The only problem is battery life which is shorter then with 4.1.1....

I don't have any "numbers" but it is so OBVIOUS, not small difference.... I.e. overnight drain was 1-2% now it is 10% at least... previously I charged my Note II until midnight, in the morning it was like 98%, I used it whole day at work and came home at 5pm with like 40-50% battery. Now I charge it at work until lunchtime (12:00) and come home and it is like 40-50% level... so NOTICABLE diference....

Taken on my 4.1.2 stock device. And that's with BT on all the time, and WIFI on when the screen is on, and just a brief 10 minutes or so on charge.
Battery life on 4.1.2 is just fine.
some devices will have normal battery life on 4.1.2, my phone got a random wakelock with 4.1.2, while my mother note 2 with 4.1.2 got normal battery life.

I was expecting to find more people talking about issues with the 4.1.2 upgrade - does appear to be a minority (that I am unfortunately in)
Since upgrading, my (sim free) Note 2 has gone from being just about perfect in operation and behaviour to suffering;
- Daily episodes of freezing (often requiring a battery out to reset)
- 2 or 3 times a day it will randomly re-boot itself
- whilst typing on keyboard often suddenly goes very laggy
- battery life has *defnintely* worsened (probabbly by around 15% or so per days use - it does deep sleep though)
- calendar view/settings reset themselves every re-boot (annoying)
All the above annoy the cr4p out of me, as I am super picky with my phones/devices and I'm pretty dissappointed with this - given the phone was SO slick pre-update. I can't stand to have a buggy phone, so unless there's an update to cater for these issues very soon (.3?) it's S4 for me.
(I would roll back to .1 in a heartbeat, but looking at how to do it, it's tantamount to a rooting processs in it's 'complexity' - you guys may be adept at such things, but to me they just look like an uneccessary ball-ache - shame there can't be a kind of 'macro/apk/idiots program' that does it all for you! But there you go, I'll have to suffer for now and see which way to jump in a few weeks I guess).
My advice? DON'T upgrade to .2 - I can't see any discernable benefit in day to day use, but I can see a LOT of irritating downside.
Very pi55ed off
Sounds like you've got something else going on than the 4.1.2 update. I have NONE of those issues at all, and battery life is just as excellent as it ever was.
i'm on 4.1.2
I've updated my mobile to 4.1.2
Baseband version : N7100XXDLK7
Build number : N7100XXDMB5
and i don't have any single problem with that update....
and the battery performance has really improved
overnight test ... without BT or WIFI but antivirus is on
tonight i will put BT and WIFI on

Worse battery life with KK

Worst fears realised.
The Kit Kat update has delivered drastically worse battery life.
Could often work with 10% per 45 min - 1 hr screen time before on WIFI, that has now gone out of the window.
1 hr 44 min screen time with 68% left now.
That is quite a bit worse I would say.
Anyone else feel the same?
I would rollback, but the camera improvements are just so much better.

I had about 5 hr screen time and almost 2 days of usage. I am using stamina and greenify though since I don't need emails and notifications pushed, I just manually refresh it.
Nope, I just managed 7.5 hours OST on my last charge on WiFi without Stamina Mode, so quite a bit better for me than JB where 5/6 was more usual. Standby power is also noticeably better, averaging ~0.4%/h.
Sadly the KitKat changes make most battery stat apps useless without root now, or I'd suggest you run one to see what's up on your end.

Did anyone try to calibrate the battery after flashing?
Calibrating battery gives exact battery reading.
There is no real calibration in android and for everybody pls alow 3-4 full charges before reporting your battery life on kitkat(same when flashing new kernel)

This is obviously a sign of some rogue process running intensively (compare performance after booting in safe mode to confirm). You should be able to figure out pretty easily which it is from the basic battery stats page, sadly no partial wakeleock listings anymore on non-rooted phones though.

I have done factory reset>>installed 4.4.2 via PC companion>>full factory reset incl internal storage.. heating problem is somewhat solved.
But it gets heated up when connected to charger..which on JB doesn't happened!! strange..
Draining seems to be normal but takes too much time to charge..
I got a great battery life on kitkat.

look at your "awakes" as apposed to screen on. theres a lot of avticity happening. use greenify if youre rooted. and perhaps consider buy the donation package so you can greenify system apps. it helps a ton.

Canadian version 4.4.2
I flashed a 4.4.2 rom from Canada (bell) also I installed Telus and Rogers, but on the 3 roms battery sucks. Before flash a Canadian rom, I flashed this leaked firmware from Mexico (telcel) and the battery life was amazing, but the problem is telcel have too much bloatware and it's pretty ugly, So in changed rom to a Canadian that doesn't have bloatware or any things like that, but Idk why battery sucks on this rom!
FYI @ OP, your TW Kitkat isn't like a real Kitkat rom. It's got hundreds of Samsung crapware services running down your battery & eating up space. The title isn't really accurate, it's not Kitkat that sucks it's TW Kitkat.
Also see the thread about awesome battery life in the TMO Samsung S4 forum for real gains in batt life regardless of which rom. GApps (specifically gtalkservice & checkin) suck down the battery unless you tame them.
KitKat on T-Mobile same problem on two new NOte 3's, battery killer and crappy wifi stability. Now on 3rd Note 3 with jelly bean and no issues.

When you take the phone off a charger it may not really be at 100%, despite what says the phone says it is at. It is quite common for the phone to be below 100% and fairly quickly change its status to what the real battery level is.

May I ask why you suspect a drain, like how long does it last and also what's wrong with the built-in bat-stat?
My biggest recommendation is to avoid DL'n every single app and keep it to a minimum.
Mine last roughly 2days with a screen time of 3-4h without charging (was away a weekend recently and took my chances and left the charger at home, used the camera alot incl. 4k shooting and alot of music videos playing and made all the way home with 1 percent )
Best phone in terms of battery I've come across yet.

Changing ROM will not help in most cases if you won't discover what is eating battery.
I am on the same above ROM and kernel and I don't complain.
Term 'fast' is not much precise, either.
BTW:
1.3%/h is pretty reasonable if phone was in use from time to time.
Base rule with BBS is to check batery over night, when it is not used at all.
Under those circumstances you should see 0.1-03%/h and that is completely fine.

i dont think using wifi and auto sync will drain my battery from 60% to 6% in just a second. Anyway, i ordered a replacement battery from witrigs. Hope this fixes my problem. Ive tried factory resets and repair through pc companion. still no improvement. Turning stamina mode improves my battery. It no longer drops 50% in a second, just 10%. Still way too low compared to my excellent battery life with kitkat. Before lollipop, i charge my phone every 2 days with heavy use. Now, i need to charge it twice a day with moderate use.

If so - I'd come back to KK before replacing battery, if for no other reason then to prove LP is guilty.
BTW:
Long ago I decided not to upgrade to LP.
Looks like evey step ahead is in real life step back.
Everything is more complicated, wants more maintenance, yet works worse than old simple tools.

This with additional adblocker
And removed alot of bloatware and sony apps I don't need.

Marshmallow with root?

So I bought an LG g4 yesterday and it should arrive here shortly - the price is good now and in my budget and my S4 was old and everything.
I hope I made the right choice but I'm terrified about the poor battery life reports I seem to find everywhere, specially since I will have to keep the brightness quite high or I can't see anything
I've always rooted my S2 and S4 so I think I will root the G4 as well.
But all the reports I read say that with MM the battery got even worse. I was excited to try MM and Doze
My question is: those who have MM and have already rooted the G4, are you also experiencing poor battery life? Or it's only those who haven't rooted?
I use an app on the S4 which I kinda like (Purify) and it does save me a lot of battery, and Greenify to block most system apps, plus it's debloated etc.. so you need root to do all this.
I'm torn between rooting Lollipop and ditching MM update, or rooting MM..
Those of you who have rooted MM and use Doze + Greenify + other eventual tweaks, how is the battery life? (I will be doing some gaming but nothing too intensive and not for long time anyway, just the time to finish the energy in your typical energy recharging games).
Eventually if it's that bad I might consider a brick of 6000mah extended battery.. Already have a 5600 on the S4 so I'm kinda used to it even if it looks bad
I have MM on my G4, sometimes i do 4 /5h on SOT and other times i do 3 or 3 and a half hours on SOT, it depends, if im using 3g, playing games... i only can get 5h with watching movies (i do it on the way to work 2h to work, 2h to home).
But, i have already bought a 6500mah battery, just waiting to came
PS: i dont have root
PS 2: if the movies are in .mkv the battery goes really fast lololol

Phone arrived and it turns out I don't have a choice, it already has MM.
So I'll root it anyway and see what will happen hopefully I don't break it the first day of purchase

Congratulations to your new phone. I got mine two days ago and I am in the same situation. My phone runs with MM (Android Marshmallow 6.0 stock rom).
Please let us know your result and the problems of rooting the h815.
Greetings,
Ponder
I haven't rooted it yet in the end.
I find it has great standby life thanks to Doze probably. However the battery drains quite fast when the screen is on (and by fast I mean 1% every 2 minutes! which is a bit too much). Everything is disabled and I've tried all the possible tricks I've found here and there. There's nothing to do I think, the screen seems to be the most power hungry thing on.
I've ordered an MPJ 6000mah battery but it needs to come from China so it will be 15-30 days. Sure it will make the phone big but I don't care much as I'm used to my old 5600mah galaxy s4 battery, and being a girl I carry it in my purse anyway, not in the pocket.
If the battery is good I think I won't need root cause tbh there aren't that many things to disable and I'd rather keep it stock so in case MM gets better updates I can jump on them immediately without having to reflash everything or remove root etc...
If when the battery gets here I see the situation is still so-so I'll consider rooting again.
Thing is I'd like to root at a stable version of MM and I'm not sure 6.0 is that version. ;P Plus maybe it will get 6.0.1 soon (even though from what I've read it's even worse )
Apart from this little (?) issue I love the phone, screen is great even not being AMOLED, and camera is great!
By the way this are some of the screens I've taken if someone is interested.. sometimes it has decent SOT like the day I achieved 4h, and sometimes not so great.
At times phone radio is a bit high and at times it's not..
Anyway it's been about 10 days so I dunno if the battery needs to stabilize more or not.

Just curious, did you get the 811 (t-mobile US) or 815 (EU International) version? Those are the only two that can be rooted with MM since all others are locked down.
