I have a rooted SGH-I747M on 4.1.2 that can't accept OTA updates as a result of being rooted. Can anyone tell me if there's a way to update my phone to 5.0 stock without losing any data, and if so where I can find a guide? I've searched these forums and google but all the guides I come across are for third party softwares (CM, liquid smooth, etc.)
Thanks!
There is no stock 5.0 for the s3 at the moment.
Since you are still on 4.1.2, your phone probably won't work with any 5.0 ROMs as your modem and bootloader are not up-to-date.
Good to know, thanks for the response.
Cheers.
you can update to 4.4.2 stock. just unroot and odin flash stock recovery. then you can use odin to root again.

Hello all, I'm new to this forum and I could really use some help with my phone. I have a rooted AT&T Samsung galaxy S3 running on 4.1.1 stock with cwm. I would like to update to the latest stock OS which is 4.3 but I'm not sure how to do it right. I would prefer to keep all my data but I don't mind losing root. how should I go about updating my device safely?

If you are rooted then you can flash any 4.3 ROM in the android development and they all have KNOX free bases. You will most likely need to update your baseband to MJB. Enjoy your KNOX free 4.3!!!

You should first check to see if you can get an OTA update. Some users have reported being able to update OTA to 4.3 even with root. Go to Settings => About Device and check for updates. If you can't get an OTA update, you may try manually updating via cwm via the method posted in the following thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486
Before updating to 4.3, however, I would suggest you ensure you are done with taking advantage of all the opportunities you have at 4.1.1 including free unlock as you would not be able to downgrade the 4.3 bootloader once you've upgraded. If you don't have Samsung Kies installed on your PC, you may install it to back up and restore your data. In other words, you cannot go back to an older version (easily) once you have upgraded.
Hello,
I am currently using a galaxy S3 i747m which is rooted and unlocked running 4.1.1. I believe I used this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426) in order to do the root.
I want to update my phone to 4.3 while retaining the root (or rerooting afterwards). I've done plenty of research and haven't found a solid guide to help me. Most seem to assume I would be on 4.1.2 or already on a stock 4.3. I don't have a solid amount of confidence with these tasks so I'm too scared to just try and flash a 4.3 ROM without a confirmation that it will work. Kies tells me in can update the phone but I am also worried about that.
What is the best course of action for me? I wouldn't be writing here unless I had already done my research and was still unsure.
Also a side question, I'm not sure how the phone was unlocked (software or code), if it was unlocked via software, will I lose this by updating to 4.3?
Thanks for the help!
The easiest way to upgrade would be to use Odin to flash a pre-rooted ROM. However, you will lose your data and apps.

Thank you for the response! Do you know where I can get a good pre-rooted ROM? Would the 4.3 one in my previous link work? Would the Kies backup be sufficient in restoring my data? Or would I need to use something like Titanium Backup?
Thanks again for all the help!
Upgrading will not re-lock the phone.
You can use one of the pre-rooted 4.3 ROMs you linked. Personally, I stayed away from 4.3 as it will introduce Knox which may cause problems in the future.
I haven't used Kies for anything so I'm not sure how good it will work. Also, it's possible your apps may not work when restored under 4.3.

Thanks again for all the help. I went ahead with the update and it actually went better than expected. All my data was preserved including apps, media, settings etc. Its just now at 4.3 and rooted!
Cheers!
Okay, so my phone is currently running 4.4.2 Cyanogenmod right now, I had to find out the hard way that I cant jump back to 4.3 due to the bootloader but will it be possible to install the stock 4.4.2 safely once its released? Or is there a way to go back down to 4.3 that I'm missing..

Don't know how you got the impression you can't go back to 4.3 from Kit-Kat based CM. CM, like most stock ROMs, doesn't come with its own bootloaders but relies on manufacturer's bootloader to run. If you went to CM from stock 4.3, chances are your bootloader was unaffected and still remains at 4.3. You can check what bootloader your phone is on by going to settings and seeing what you have under baseband. If it's UCUEMJB then you have the 4.3 (MJB) bootloader and you should be able to use custom recovery to flash a stock 4.3 restore image.
If history is anything to go by, you would be unlikely to get the (newly released) 4.4.2 update OTA if you are not on a full stock (or stock-based) ROM. I would, however, not be in a rush for OTA as we can always trust the good guys in the development community to come up with a manual update process shortly. If you still want to revert to full stock 4.3, then you can follow the instructions in the thread below ...

Your right!
Used the process you gave me and it worked, I had been trying to use odin but I supose a simpler solution was better. Thanks again!
I just switched from stable CM10.1 to stock 4.4.2 this week. It sucks. Performance and battery dropped drastically. Will be going back to CFW asap.
My galaxy siii was rooted before kitkat was out, and I have been using it until now and have not yet update to KitKat yet because AT&T is not part of it any more.
How do I get KitKat on my phone? Do I have to unroot the phone and put it back into AT&T mode to download or what should I do?
this might help.

You will need to unroot your phone and have the stock recovery.
Thank you for both replies gentleman

I might add to this...if you removed any stock carrier or vendor apps from 4.3 while being rooted...you'll have to restore them via a Titamium Backup or some other way or the OTA update will not install properly. (I realized that the OTA update from 4.3 to 4.4.2 will patch these apps to update them to 4.4.2 compatibility)
If you can't do that or if its unreasonable to do that based on the way the phone was modified while rooted...I suggest flashing the stock 4.3 rom via Odin and then take the OTA.
Id recommend flashing the 4.3 firmware via Odin to begin with. Its starting to seem like a lot of people who even just have to unroot are having problems with the ota. I think Odin flashing stock 4.3 will give the best chance of a successful update.

I am having this issue. I rooted on 4.3 and removed Google books and newsstand. I then uprooted and did a factory reset , so everything in download mode says "official" but the apps were still missing so I downloaded them from the play store. My question is will this let me get the OTA now or do I have to push the apps to the /system directory somehow? Also if I flash the 4.3 ODIN tar file, will it trip my warranty bit? It's at 0 right now and want to keep it that way until my warranty is up.
The firmware shouldn't trip the bit, but I can't promise that. Im sure its confirmed one way or the other in its thread though.
As for those apps, they'd have to be system apps, so just installing normally won't help. More importantly though, they would also need to be the same version that was originally built into the firmware. The apps you mentioned have seen many updates and using the current versions will not work.
I got the phone 2 weeks ago and it came with 4.3 installed on it. Would I be able to use the current version and just push them to /system/app with titanium backup? I am trying to get the OTA without tripping any warranty or security measures.
Hey guys I am trying to update my galaxy s3 to kitkat. I am running galaxy s3 at&t variant 747 rooted 4.1.1. I747UCDLK3 update to kitkat. I realized I need to update to 4.1.2 first before doing the 4.3 update. I can't seems to find files I need for 4.1.2. Can someone point me in the right direction. Thank you for your help.
Are your running stock 4.1.1? If you are and your phone is not sim unlocked, unlock it using the free method. Once unlocked, use Odin to flash back to stock unrooted 4.1.1 and then run OTA until you get to KK. It's a longer process than trying to flash straight to 4.4 but is a safer method for people that are new to flashing ROMs.
I am on the stock rom 4.1.1. Does CWM recovery need to go back to stock as well? That is a good idea to unlock before I update.
If you flash back to stock 4.1.1 with Odin, it will wipe everything and put the phone back to completely unroot stock and stock recovery. Stock recovery and being unrooted is required for OTA updates.
Ok is this the link to unlock phone?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2529200
Yes, that's it.
I can't seem to find 4.1.1 rom file links seem to be bad on unlock page.
There are stock rooted 4.1.1 images here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
You can use the free unlock method even if the ROM is rooted.
For some reason the at&t mirrors don't seem to be working either.
Mirror2 for the stock rooted 4.1.1 works for me.
I would like to root again after kit kat Is it easy to root with knox? Does unlock stick through kit kat? I really appreciate all of the help. Great website. Great people.
Many people have had success with rooting by using Towelroot.
The sim unlock is permanent.
Let me know how it goes for you @thepar. I expect to be updating to kitkat in the coming week.
For the benefit of those searching the forums to unlock their phones my experience may be of help to those on 4.1.2 or possibly even MJ2. I have had my SGS3 since June 2013 and only allowed one update, that was to 4.1.2. My phone was rooted long ago, but I just unlocked it earlier today and that was with a custom recovery in place and without unrooting. In my case I did not revert to the 4.1.1 rom. I did downgrade the modem to dlk3, that of 4.1.1 while leaving the rom and bootloader at MG2. After completing the unlock I upgraded the modem back to MG2. I have confirmed that SMS, MMS, phone, and wifi functionality is intact.
In truth, I will probably not go back to stock to get to kitkat. I am considering upgrading to the leaked MJ2/4.3 bootloader and MJB modem and then flash a kitkat rom which will work on them, there are several.
I just did the unlock yesterday. I need to find someone with a t-mobile sim to test if the unlock worked. Will I still be able to update the OS even though it is on rooted stock? What will it update me too?
I am kind of debating if I should install a custom rom minus KNOX.

If you want to run an OTA update, you need stock recovery and an unrooted system.
I have a stock recovery but the os is rooted. I don't mind using oden to update the os. I might be better to install a rom with knox removed. I can't seem to find 4.1.1 stock unrooted. I did find 4.0.1 ICS.
You can find a stock ATT 4.1.1 ROM on sammobile.com.
You cannot use Odin to flash a stock KK ROM because it was never released in an Odin format by ATT. ATT provided the KK update via OTA updates. Complete KK updates were provided for i747m only.
Thanks so much!! downloading now.
Let us know what happens. Cheers
I have decided to go custom rom route. It is better to update stock ota first then install custom rom or custom rom straight from 4.1.1?
