So due to my Verizon contract situation (need to add a line for a family member anyway, don't have unlimited data) I have the option to get a Droid Turbo for $99 after rebate and give them my G3 instead of getting them a G3 or a Turbo for the same $99. In that situation, what are pros/cons of the two phones? My current thinking:
LG G3 Pros
1) Edge to edge screen gets you an extra 0.2" of real estate for same size phone
2) Removable battery (and I got a 2nd battery + charger from the promo by emailing LG)
3) Micro SD slot (for storing photos/video + caching majority of my Google Music)
4) I actually use the IR blaster for my projector/soundbar/cable box)
5) Thinner/lighter + good handfeel with curved back. I didn't like the 2nd gen Moto X when I held it, don't see how Turbo will be different unless I get the Ballistic Nylon backing
Droid Turbo Pros
1) Presumably smoother/less laggy between the 805 and close to stock Android. I don't really game on the phone but might start once things look pretty enough (do run Drastic's excellent DS emulator though, although that feels like it runs better on Tegra hardware)
2) Should get Android 5.0 really quickly
3) Camera - 21MP is a beast, and 4K video is nice to have even if I probably won't use it at 24fps. I assume the Panoramas get fixed soon + can always use 3P app. I never got any value from the LG G3 laser focus and in fact thought the camera was one of the few unsatisfactory things about it
4) Battery life despite the "2 day" controversy. Also nice to have wireless charging/really fast charging. However, I already replaced the NFC with a Qi + NFC from Aliexpress on my G3
5) Ooh look it's new and shiny (this is currently the biggest reason I am considering switching, stupid I know)
6) For whatever reason, mic or connectivity, Moto seems to do better when it comes to call clarity, I find the G3 a step back from the G2, and if the Turbo is like the 2nd gen Moto X it will be better.
Question Marks:
1) Recent Verizon LG G3 bootloader unlock. Assume I can flash debloated Android 5.0 shortly and get a similar experience. Also worried that Turbo won't get unlock as Verizon exclusive limits dev community appeal somewhat
2) LG G3 corporate email (exchange) app was near unusable but seems to be a key fix in recent OTA (haven't taken yet). May be less of an issue with Exchange support in the Android 5.0 Gmail app (currently using Accompli, but it just came out of Beta and is still pretty unstable and doesn't always refresh consistently)
3) Screen - on one hand AMOLED but apparently brightness is pretty awful. I REALLY liked the G3 screen
4) Wifi ac - never got LG G3 to work right and I want to get value from my ac router, maybe Turbo will be better
5) Audio, not sure I love earpiece as speaker and low voltage headphones (I generally keep the volume all the way up when wearing IEMs with comply tips on flights - bad I know)
As you see from the endless replies, don't think anyone is going to talk you out of it.
All i have to say is - to me the DT is very very ugly - it looks almost akin to the Atrix 2 - *vomit*
And hardware buttons? - what is this 2009?
But whatever floats your boat.
. What were they thinking ... Holy Jesus on roller skates ! Its hideous ... No thanks .. G3 got me hooked

I bought the Turbo on release day, coming from the G3 and I plan to return it. I'm on my phone so can't type too much, but check out the Turbo sub-forum and you'll see many people complaining about worse WiFi performance, nylon issues with dirt, off-color and over saturated display, much worse camera, and only about the same battery life.
For me, the cellular radios are about the same within 1-2dBm, but WiFi is around 5-10dBm worse with the Turbo. The camera also is much worse, I made a G3 vs Turbo thread on the Turbo sub-forum, where I compared photos, they all lacked detail and weren't very good. Lots of people are complaining about the poor camera.
I also find the battery to be about the same as the G3, I was expecting significantly better.

There may be some legitimate reasons to,get the Turbo over the G3. But you didn't list any of them (like moto voice, car mode, etc, etc, etc). In fact, I think all the reasons you have listed have been debunked already.
Honestly it sounds like you just want the newest and shiniest thing - which is fine. But I bet you end up giving the Turbo to your family member and keeping the G3.

That exactly !
All i have to say is that G3 (2GB RAM) performs a lot worse that my Nexus 5, even Moto G (1st Gen) runs better with no lag at all. To me, this is absolutely outrageous for a high end phone in 2014. Id say Moto with that 805 chip is a clear winner!

Nope, I bet that before the end 2014 L will only come to F400 owners, whereas D85* owners will get L not before MWC in february 2015. The G2 in last year was treated the same.
It doesn't matter if the droid Turbo has a Snapdragon 805 processor (supposedly faster). If you don't optimize the phone settings it will still lag. My and my wife's D850 G3 doesn't have the lag so many here complain about. My Antutu test scores consistently in the 40ks with highest at 41252. Battery life as high as 50 hours between charge and that is with screen usage at 54% and SOT at 5 hrs 22 mins. I have gone 6 hrs 19 mins between charge with 21% battery remaining at 55% screen usage. Have over 50 apps installed on each G3.
Could you share your type of optimization you have been using?

Turn off auto sync. Fetch your email manually. Sync your accounts manually.
Turn off location. If you must use location set to wifi network.
Turn off Google location reporting in location setting.
Turn off quick circle if not using quick circle case.
Turn off NFC, smartbeam, android beam when not using them.
Set display to 60% auto.
I don't use Facebook. My wife does, but she signs in & out when done.
I don't play games on G3. I have tablets for that.
I watch HD and 4k videos on YouTube.
I watch movies previews on Flixster.
Main uses of G3 are call, messaging, emails, YouTube, Flixster, camera, OfficeSuite Pro.
Hope this helps. Back to the regular scheduled thread topic.

I agree that it will take forever for AT&T and Verizon to release official OTA. But as soon as the base version is released, ROM developers will work their magic to bring Lollipop to the other variations.

I just got a replacement phone (my last one was so laggy/buggy/overheating even after factory resets)
The new phone (new in box) was a different hardware version then the last one.. N910V.06. Does anyone know what the differences are between N910V.06 and N910V.05 (my old phone)? I can't seem to find any information on the web regarding it..
Thanks,
-mark
BTW - in case anyone's curious.. With the old phone, testing Gear VR - netflix would give me the overheating warning after approximately ~2 minutes.. Now it's closer to ~20-30 minutes. (still not perfect; hopefully 5.1.1 fixes that..)
-mark
I'm also curious about this, I didn't know there were hardware changes made to the Note 4. Mine has been laggy with poor battery life for months now, since what I thought was the Lollipop update but in many ways has always seemed less responsive than my Note 2 and 3. And I did perform a factory reset after Lollipop. Wondering if I should consider sending my phone in for warranty before it expires soon.
So far the new phone is acting much better. (then my last phone after a factory reset).. Still overheats, but not nearly as fast (on gear vr)

First off, Hi and I'm considering updating to the G4 for the following reasons:
1: Only camera that supports RAW shooting and Manual camera
2: MicroSD card is still an option.
3: I can swap batteries when needed.
I'm getting the phone from Costco and expect it will come with the latest update (612a I think) but I can't be sure till I get the phone. How tough is this phone to root? I'm not interested in custom ROMS or unlocked bootloaders, just want root for Adblocker, TI Backup, and debloating. Looks like I have to keep the VZW app running for advanced calling, so that is no big deal.
What are some problems with the phone. I've noticed touchscreen issues that seem to be fixed with the latest update, anything else I need to be aware of?
How is the battery life in real world usage? Will I get a day out of it Surfing, answering calls/emails, streaming video on occasion?
Should I stick wit VZW or jump to AT&T? My contract is up and I'm losing my unlimited data, so there is no reason to stick with VZW anymore. Is AT&T any better or worse than Verizon?
Thanks for any assistance.
I checked with Costco about switching to AT&T, and they told me it wasn't worth it, ad it would cost me more money than VZW.
Why are you losing your unlimited data?
I switched from the S4 to the G4 and have been pretty happy so far. The only reason I went with the G4 is the micro SD card & removable battery. My battery will last all day as long as I have a good signal. If my signal level is very low, it eats the battery pretty quick, but so did my S4. The camera is much better on the G4! I kept my unlimited data when I bought my G4. I bought mine at Best Buy & just swapped Sim cards when I was ready to use the G4.
Personally I've had nothing but problems with the g4. From day one this phone got blazing hot! An update about a month later seemed to fix the overheating issue and I was moderately satisfied with the g4, until this last update (12a) in which my notifications are not available when on Wi-Fi. This is a premium, flagship device. I don't understand why it's so riddled with bugs. Besides all those issues, I'm not impressed with the backside buttons. They're too close together and screenshots are a nuisance. That being said, the camera is amazing. But that pretty much sums up my experience. Wishing I had gone with the note 4 or s6....
i am a proud owner of a G4 threw verizonwireless and i love my G4, phone has all what u are looking for, RAW image support, Manuel mode for taking pics and sd card up to 2TB (cards are not out but SDXC can support up to 2TB)
as u see someone has issues with the 12a version. i have 11a and rooted and will not update untill a stable OS is released, if you get the G$ and it ether has 10a or 11a u can look threw my post on how to root the phone, if you root make sure you disable system updates and check with xda on updates for new OS etc.
specs of the phone has a snap dragon 808 (6 core processor)
3GB of ram
32GB internal space
if u have 10a or 11a here is my post i took the time to help others when root first came out
if your g4 comes with 10a, make sure u do the kdz method first from 10a to 11a
http://forum.freelatestmovies.org/verizon-g4/help/lg-g4-vs985-root-video-walk-threw-t3166078
hope this helps you
Thanks. I'll check out the rooting guide when I get the phone. Can 12a be rooted or is it still locked down at this point?
I found I can keep my unlimited data, but at a $20.00 extra cost. based on my usage the 18gb plan for my GF's and my phone should be good. I can always switch to wi-fi @ home. My home Wi-Fi is faster than 4g anyway.
Stay away from 12a its not a good update that i seen. Im happy with 11a
Thanks. I don't know if I'll have an option, but I'll keep it in mind.
This phone is a piece of ****. Gets hot, battery just drains out of the blue, keyboard lag will drive you nuts, and its super slow. My S5 beats this piece anyday. If you would like one I would gladly sell you mine. its rooted and no one has a rom for it yet.
I've only had the phone for a week.... but I haven't had any issues (manufacture date of 9/2015).
I came from the S4 and I don't have the same love for this phone like I've had with my S4.
My major issues with this phone is the touch screen issues which they fixed with the recent update, however now with that update they broke notifications via WiFi. So my experience with LG so far hasn't been a good one.
Thanks all for the info. Looks like Verizon now has the V10 in stock, so I'm going with that instead of the G4.
Hi,
I am interested in buying the G3 for £200 (G4 too expensive) are there any major drawbacks or reasons why I shouldn't get it? I previously owned an LG Spirit 4G and LG G Pad 7 (still have it :victory both of which I liked but the Spirit 4G was a bit slow hence want to go for something better.
On a side note does the G3 have Glance View, double tap to wake...? And how are LG with updates for flagships, will Android 6.0 be the last, is firmware stable?
Thanks

The G3 doesn't have glance view, but it does have double tap to wake, LG are good when it comes to releasing updates at least to it's flagships. I am on Marshmallow and it is a huge improvement in battery life, my phone was unplugged and sat in my pocket most of the time for 1hr and a half with the brief reading of some new articles and I have 0% battery loss. The UX is smoother. As for future updates who knows, the hardware is capable it just depends on LG's marketing of their future phones. At that price I would say go for it, if it were me the only keep back would be at this stage I would want a phone with a fingerprint reader.

My last 2 phones have been the g2 and g3 and i will say both have had there flaws some bugs along the way but both being rooted and modded just right. Best 2 phones ive ever owned stock they eat battery they over heat they lag but most custom roms have solved most of if not all bugs i prfer stock roms on the g3 over non. Due to camera quality. And a few otber things but over all you wont be to disapointed

Battery Life?
How would you guys rate the battery life? I'm guessing it'd be the weakest point of the phone with the 2K display. Can you get a day out of it with moderate use?
I use for texting and light browsing atarting at. About 7 am til 5 pm then basicly wear it out on wifi games music web randoms sheet from there on out til about midnight and usally got about 20% left but im rooted fulmics stock based rom running xceed kernal also undervolted 10ma screen britness about 50% under auto britness getting 6 to 6.5 hours of total screen on time
Battery Life is not the strongest Part oft the G3.
With average usage and deactivated NFC/Bluetooth/GPS and Display on 100% Brightness (i like it very lighty, but i have readen in this forum the most users use the phone with less Brightness) i have to charge the phone every day at night, so i would say after a 12-13 hrs average usage its low. If the Brightness is lower maybe 15hrs. I wouldn't expact more, but nowadays you have more possibilities to charge (in the car, at the office, on the notebook) so its not very a big point for me personally.

Battery life is moderate on Lollipop, but I have Marshmallow for 3 days now and it has improved immensely, my phone was idle for 1hr & half and I experienced 0% battery loss
I love my G3 on Marshmallow. It is simply flying. LG has done a fantastic job. But honestly at this time (that is 2 years after release of the flagship) I will recommend you not to buy it. Don't misunderstand. Though it's an absolutely brilliant device, keeping future proofing in mind, I will suggest to wait for G4 prices to drop further or consider other options. Of course our xda community will keep on supporting this device for a long time. But AOSP lacks certain LG features like knock code, Stock Camera performance (certain apps come close) and battery life takes a hit. So considering all these factors, I will advise against buying a G3

Yes the G3 has the clipboard which I love, also little things like the caller app that pops up at the top without kicking you out of the app you were using, or how you can respond to text messages without leaving the screen you were in. The adjustable keyboard is awesome, and once rooted you can fix little issues like allowing all apps to function in dual screen mode

Hmmm I see what you mean. I actually never realised it is two years old, probably because it just turned 2016. I have been looking at the G4 but it is at least £270 (cheapest I have found), which isn't too bad but it is a bit high for me. But I am definitely keeping an eye on it. :cyclops:

Yes! My LG Spirit 4G also had those features! This is why I am going for LG.
I bought D851 from ebay, and I find its very lagy (more evident when you play games - temple run e.g) and also i noticed web page loading is very slow (even on wifi) - I am comparing these parameters to Amazon firephone (which i find is way faster). Do you think it has something to do with this particular phone or it is general problem with this phone. I am thinking to return this phone.
thanks.

I never ended up buying the G3 (don't know what I was thinking), I have the OnePlus X which will receive android upgrades and has flagship specs. But from my experience with LG (mid range phone/tab) I would like to say that their UI is generally quite laggy and choppy hence it could be software?
I don't mean to criticise the G3 as it is a very good phone, but with the G5 around the corner (next month) it is not worth buying anymore.
@ ethereal123 I would return it if I were in your position.
So I've got a Optimus G, the sprint variant running 7.1.2 which it runs fine, unless I try to do something stupid like play lineage 2. Then it restarts. But now it has a new problem, if I unplug the device, at all, it just dies after like... 3 seconds? It was fine yesterday (when 7.1.2 was first installed) but now it won't boot if the battery is the only source of power. Seriously if you start it on the battery, it will forever try to boot into NitrogenOS. If it's on the charger then it will boot fine, until you unplug it. Any ideas? I already ordered a new battery, and I'm going to try the old unplug and plug back in on this current battery to see if that will help. Does anyone know anything? And before someone says it, I don't care if it the sprint variant; it has the GEEHRC board, and it's running a ROM from these threads, since the sprint threads are pretty much empty, I posted it here. Get over it.
My gf phone got stolen and I gave her my old E977, but i'm having this same issue. In fact now it doesn't even turn on/charge at all.
Get a new phone, the batteries on any phone can only last so long; especially when this phone has a battery from five years ago. Batteries do not maintain their advertised capacities for the entire duration of their lives, the older they are the more they're prone to not holding a charge, especially with older manufacturing technologies. Besides, the phone is so slow in today's world where it's no longer practical to keep the damn thing. I still have mine, my battery is gone and I just keep it because it was my first android phone / flagship. I now use an LG V30 and its eons ahead of this thing, the 10nm Snapdragon 835 is way better not to mention even budget phones will easily destroy the performance of the old Snapdragon S4 Pro, I'm sure you know this. You can even pick up a G6 for under 250$, which I also owned but sold in favor of the V30. Trust me, it's worth the upgrade from the pain and hassle of dealing with this archaic hardware. Don't buy a new battery either, you're pouring more money into the phone than what it's actually worth, you'll be losing value rather than gaining. You'll have a much better experience, I bet you probably cannot do this just yet, but when the time comes, and trust me it will; go for it and don't look back! Before my Optimus G died, I was running 5.0 when Cyanogen was still around; I was experiencing the same issues as you were, but when it finally never powered on again, I finally got a new device. I operated my Optimus G for around 3 years on and off until it never powered on again. Then I just got a OnePlus One when it was new, and never looked back. I could send you over a new G5, I never used it and it's inbox still, I never used it because I was not a fan of the design, LG sent me one because my G4 crapped out.
