[Q] New to Android

Hi,
I just got my new SE Xperia Play phone and got it with android Gingerbread on it, I'm not completely familiar with this OS but following information that I've read I rooted my phone and it is working fine, I did this cause I read that by doing this I would be able to remove and add apps to my phone as I became a Super User on the Linux side of it. Now my questions is, How can I do this? I've tried to find like an step by step add and remove apps on my phone with no luck. Also I'd like to get some information on what can I do and what I can't (or shouldn't do) with my super user rights ( i found this but not sure how to add this titanium backup on my phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046699).
All help will be greatly appreciated.

you can delete any apps including system apps by using TITANIUM BACKUP.
once you've installed it and run it click on the backup/restore tab at the top then select whatever app you want to remove (system apps inluded) click that app and there will be an uninstall option.
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU DELETE!

oh ok I get it, so it is available through the android market.. now that is for the Uninstall stuff part (thanks to both) now in order to get stuff installed into the phone is it there an option for that or can I do it using the linux terminal that is installed on the phone?

OK, I have been where you are, and maybe this VERY brief summary will get you started.
1. Root - you did that.
2. Download and install the CWM for locked bootloaders from this link here.
3. Follow the instructions to power off, then power on and press down on the Volume Down key to enter the recovery mode. Then go to the Backup/Restore menu and backup the phone. This creates a Nandroid, or image of the phone so you can put it back to rooted stock if you mess something up.
4. Download and install Titanium Backup from the App Market. You can use this to uninstall any bloatware, including System files, but use with caution so you won't need to use your Nandroid! There is a safe list thread here that will give you some help in what you can remove.
5. Apps for Android usually come from the Android Market, or another market that hosts Android apps like Amazon AppMarket, etc. So any program you want to install will generally need to come from there. (Yes, I know there are some apps around that some Joe Ubertech wrote, but in general, you will want to get apps from the Market or a Vendor site, like Gameloft or EA.)
6. Use an App2SD program to move as many apps to your SD Card as are able to go. This frees up internal storage so you can run smoothly and have a lot of apps too. I like Droidsail Super App2SD (ROOT) because it lets you select a group of apps at one time to move. Do NOT move to SD any app that is accessed through a widget, or any replacement launcher program.
7. Be aware that Programs marked as System files cannot be moved to SD. However, some of them, like the preinstalled games, GMail, Youtube, etc, are also found in the Market. You can either delete them and reinstall them from the Market, or use a program like Root Explorer to manually move these to a folder on the SD card. Then reboot your phone, and you can reinstall them as user apps and be able to move them to SD as well.
8. Read. Read, read, read, READ everything you can get your hands on here in xda. It has been the best source of info for the Xperia Play.

[Q] moving apps and game data?

Just got a GT N7100 few days ago. rooted it. i have lots of games installed like max payne, gta3 etc. so all my storage is gone. i want to ask how do i move games and apps to external sd? can i backup game data which is everytime whopping over 1gb so that i do not need to download it again if i reinstall any game. is there any way to move gamedata to ext. sd?
and:victory: i just got idea if i do not uninstall game back but just backup gamedata and delete it from phone to free up memory and when i need app i just move back data to its original location which is usually android data, will it work.
i have 300 mb free space and now my phone doesnt allow me to install an app even less than 1mb of size..any idea......thanks in advance.......:good:

No if you want to use the same files/folders on another phone. The game downloads files for your specs, not for other phones.
If its for your or another Note 2 then it might work if the game has not been updated since your backup. If it has been updated it might need the new files.

what about if i do not uninstall game back but just backup gamedata and delete gamedata from phone to free up memory and when i need app i just move back data to its original location which is usually android data, will it work and yes i will be doing this on same phone.

That will probably work unless you open it by a mistake. Maybe not if it has the permission to run at startup. It could look for the files then, and not find any.
Both of the solutions i linked to works for me.
Directory Bind is most useful for me with this phone.
And then you don't have to wait for the copying every time you want to play a game.

Remember that apps with root access can do everything they want with your phone, including making it as usefull as a brick.
Don't use an app with root access until you think you understand a little of what it does, and you have read a few reviews/posts about it.
Be extra careful with root apps that are not in the Play store/Market. This is not. Why are they not there? Maybe because Google rejected it because it does bad things?
I wanted all of the data in the folder DirectoryBind on my external SD card. What you are supposed to do then (step 2 in that guide) is change the default data path to /mnt/extSdCard/DirectoryBind. I wrote /extSdCard/DirectoryBind because my Galaxy S II had a link to the microSD card there. The Note II does not, so the /mnt/ is important

Tutorial
1. Download Android 5.0 Lollipop ROM for Vodafone Smart Tab 4g from link below :
The ROM File size is big, so I split the file into 3 parts :

To combine 3 parts files above into 1 file just use WINRAR, then extract the files into ZIP format. If any problem with the ROM, maybe because the ROM have corrupted during the download process, you can try to re-download the ROM.
2. Install the ROM Manager on your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g . Get it from Google Play Store, then install the clockwork mod recovery. You also can use ROM Installer application from JRummy Apps Inc.(Get it from Google Play Store).
3. Connect your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g to your PC employing the USB information cable. Copy the “ROM.zip” file you downloaded to the SD memory card.
4. Restart your device in the recovery mode using ROM Manager. As soon as in Recovery Mode, go to ROM Manager and select backup/restore to back-up your information.
5. From the Recovery Menu do a total data erase (including Delvik Cache). When completed, go back to Recovery Principal Menu and choose Flash ROM from SD Card. Navigate the location you copied the ”ROM.zip” file and follow the directions for installing Android 5.0 Lollipop on your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g . As soon as the installation is over, just reboot your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g device, and here you go, you’ve just upgraded it to the new Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The link is now up in modaco.But users are reporting that since an update the root method doesn't work.

If you want my opinion, i think that this supposed lollipop version is fake...

I have same issue. Apps can work with data on SD Card, for example RawDroid can edit photos, save/delete files. But App2SD functionality is still not supported. It should work with Link2SD app and 2 partitions on SD card. The reason is emulated external storage in internal memory. I didn't find yet how to turn this of, or how to change it.

I've tried Link2SD, but with no success. The best i got was to use MountFolder to move the applications data to the external SD card. With this, I've recovered some good precious space (for example, Minion Rush was using 330MB that where freed).

People say it is based on Alcatel Pop 8S tablet, but I have never seen this tablet on sale, neither original roms, nothing about it.

Titanium backup says it can't find the apks..

In Android 4.4, apps can't write the sd-card, it's a security thing. But there are apps, which enables sd write. And yes, we have source, but for ROMs we also need recovery, and a developer. But fingers crossed.

Yes and it is work. Only "bug" after the root is: every time you reboot your tablet you will got a message that says android is upgrade-ing and continues to updating apps. But it is work.

No, optimezing. Its that thing when android take an update and after that the apps is optimezed. This happening after each reboot. About the root process: if you use win 8, 8.1 you wont be able to rootbso easly because of the drivers. Try with win xp or 7. My advice: use XP. I did it with it.

So, to get this straight: we can actually root the Vodafone smart tab 4g and flash custom roms??

Save apps with settings for another ROM?

How do we set up our devices exactly how we like with the apps we like and customised settings for each app.... and then save them all onto the SD card so we can then flash in another flavour of ROM to try out and simply add our saved apps all set up and ready to go....?
It takes forever to re-set all my apps i like to use.... and as I'm hopefully going to have MultiROM working asap I would hope that I can simply flash in a ROM to try and 'add' all my apps to it with with one click but importantly with all their settings exactly how I use them.

I agree. Maybe you could try the Titanium Backup donate version. I think it has a "Create zip" option. I just can't comment further as I've never used it.

however... I've now discovered that I lost the original full root access I had on KK when i installed CM12 and I'm gonna guess that full root access is tied in to the kernel and of course Android 5.x.x is built on a different kernel and therefore needs re-rooting....? CyanogenMod grants App and ADB root via menu in developer options but that is obviously a limited root access and not enough for APK Organise...?
When i try the APK organise it denies me the backup saying 'No root access'.... which surprised me initially.
I can't seem to find a working root-tool for Android 5.1.1. which is what I'm currently on in CM12.1.... anyone know where I can find please as this APK organise looks like a very useful tool to have working from within Windows and makes it easy to keep the backups on my laptop harddrive instead of the sd card

Use zipme available on playstore.
It makes zip flashable with apk data and also settins if selected ....

You don't need to root CM, simply enable root access in the developer options.
Apart from that, I've been using Titanium Backup pro for years and I'm very happy with it.
Edit: sry, I didn't see the upper half of your post. Anyway, the CM root access is enough for TitaniumBackup. Maybe it's the app that has to be updated for lollipop, I remember TitaniumBackup had some issues in the first days of lollipop, too.

As luckyrumo points out these apps 'APK Organise' and the 'ZipMe' you recommend may well need updating to work with Android 5..... ZipMe hasn't been touched since 2013 according to the 'last updated' info.
I have Titanium Backup free version and tried using the backup app + data in batch prefs menu prior to having to do a wipe and clean install of CM12.... but when I reinstalled the Titanium backup app it failed to show the backups that were made previously and supposedly stored on my sd card along with everything else that has never been affected on the sd card. during ROM installations and associated full wipes... I think the backup disappeared when the app was wiped... I can't think of any other logical explanation....? I wonder if the paid version makes a difference...?
One particular app I use is Call Meter 3G which keeps track of my available contract free minutes by way of progress bar homescreen widget tracking any given monthly period and of course it does so by logging all my calls,messages and data use (tho I get unlimited data on my plan so that is not important). Because of the sheer volume and complexity of all the settings to get this app customised to work with my carrier plan it's a pain to have to set-it all up again when re-installing apps after flashing a custom ROM... and without the call logs you will always be starting part way thru a month so it won't be accurate until the bill cycles and a new month begins.
If I can get MultiROM working (no luck so far) having a one click install for apps and customised settings will make life much easier as I plan to try out ALL available ROM's alongside my primary. I only have one device at this stage so MultiROM is a no brainer for me... If I could just get it to install !!!!!

i also on CM 12.1 Lollipop 5.1.1... (Weekly 5 - JustArchi)
and i restored the apps + data (whatsapp + messages etc.) from CM 11 to CM 12.1 with no problems...
as i installed CM 12.1 in CWM, at restart system, i was asked for fixing root... i have choosen "yes"
for APK Organize choose root access for apps + adb in developer options and activate debug mode. should work, worked for me...

SdFix or not SdFix?

Hi,
my H815 is freshly and happily rooted, and i wonder if i have to install SdFix or not.
Do we have to do this on Lillipop?
on Google Play, SdFix says "for kitkat" and don't mention Lollipop.
What do you think?

I had to use it for some apps, so I say YES. Lollipop has the same regulations for the external SD like KitKat, so the apps have the same problems.

there was this thread some time ago by @TecknoFreak that explained how to fix that by editing the /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml file by hand, no need for an app http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2524277. he posted this in another thread but i cant remember now where i saw it
having said that, i cant remember if i used TB saving my backups to external before or after i made the change to my xml using the steps from the thread but i am pretty sure it was before. also the LG camera can write to ext_sd so dont know for sure this is needed. plus i just did a reflash of @MicroMod777 xTreme rom so it reset that file and i can still write to my ext_sd with TB and camera

so i must have done the xml edit before i did TB, either way, i dont think you need an app for this. sure it might make it easier, but editing the file is not too bad to tackle either

I downloaded SDFix from Google Play (pretty sure it's the same one I used when KitKat first came out) and it reported that the app wasn't necessary.
EU H815 rooted with the recently released Low Effort Exploit (and not by unlocking the bootloader via LG's Dev site).
TiBu was one of the first apps I installed after rooting earlier this week, and it never had a problem backing up to my ext. SD card.

My edits should work just fine for TB backing up on external. I did the same edits to my H811 and works great. I was getting the same error as well and it got fixed after those edits that is just one line missing.
I rather change a line or 2 before installing an app to my phone but that is just me.

Specifically for TitaniumBackup, you just need to go to preferences and when selecting your backup folder, change the storage provider to DocumentProvider storage (Click above the DETECT button) and then navigate to your folder.
Works fine without any fixes.

Don't get the option to 'protect' backups though if you go this route. Only if you use the default setting with edited platform.xml file.

Same here, and this worked perfectly fine on my H815 (SEA version). Now I can actually let GoneMadMusicPlayer edit tags in my music collection.
