How do I update N4 DE with custom recovery - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have Note 4 DE with TWRP, rooted that came with N910VVRU1ANI1. There is newer version of software, N910VVRU1ANJ5, available here
What should I do to update the software on my phone without locking the unlocked bootloader? According to what I read here and there, I must bypass OTA updates that will "convert" my DE to stock locked phone and should use Odin and flash Stock Restore, Kernel, Modem & Recovery; am I missing something or adding something that I do not need? In what order should I flash all these? When do I wipe Dalvik/Cache?
Thanks.

doesnt matter what order just dont flash full or partial firmware or bootloader/recovery. dont know if you need a full wipe or not
i would recommend just flashing this in twrp honestly though

Just flash "stock restore" in odin, it will update everything (except bootloader) you will retain data and be on NJ5. You will then have to reflash TWRP in Odin then reroot via Chainfire auro root or by flashing super SU in TWRP. If you run into problems I would recommend reflashing via Odin, then doing a factory reset via stock recovery then you will have to redo the above. FYI the factory reset in stock recovery will wipe the internal SD so make a backup. If you flash the ROM listed above without updating to NJ5 in Odin first you may get bootloop.

[SOLVED] Thinking About Jumping to MJB

so from what i understand about updating the bootloader to MJB, i can only flash custom ROMs based off TouchWiz 4.3 and up, correct?
but AOSP/CM based ROMs can be any version? as long as the bootloader is supported on that ROM? and worst case scenario, i can flash CM10.1.3 (Android 4.2.2)?
currently i'm on S3Rx 2.2, which uses Android 4.1.2. there would be no point in making a nandroid backup, since the bootloader would be updated and i could no longer use this ROM, correct?
i was going to follow this guide:

and then use this ROM:

***************SOLVED:***************
flash the MJB bootloader via custom recovery following the above guide.
then flash the MJB modem via custom recovery with this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831898
reboot to phone (i did, not sure if necessary tho)
then reboot to recovery, flash new custom ROM.
done.
a mistake i did was i only flashed the bootloader first. rebooted, then flashed new ROM. in which case i had no wifi and data. so i flashed the modem, rebooted, no wifi and data still. rebooted into recovery, factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, and everything worked fine after that.

You could install the MJ2 bootloader and MJB modem which would allow you the ability to go back. Once you are on MJB bootloader, there is not going back without bricking. If you ever find that you need to revert back for any reason you will be stuck. If this does not bother you, then go for it.

i read somewhere that MJ2 was unstable or something. cause it was a preview leak?
but back to my first question, MJB makes it so i can only flash TouchWiz-based ROMs 4.3 and up? so i will be good to use AOSP-based ROMs of any version?
For clarification purposes:
If you upgrade to MJB you will have the 4.3 KNOX apps (OS) and KNOX bootloader (Firmware). You can easily root following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538991
Once rooted by following the guide noted above you will have the 4.3 KNOX (OS) removed BUT not the KNOX bootloader. With the KNOX bootloader you will never be able to downgrade the bootloader. What that means is that you can never use odin to flash an older firmware or you will brick!
Now that your MJB is rooted you can flash any ROM you want 4.1.2, 4.2.2, 4.3, 4.4.2 since most custom ROMS dont include the bootloader in the ROM package.
Hope this clears things up?

Yes it does! Thank you!!
I'm on the latest bootloader and modem and I haven't had any trouble flashing any aosp based roms. Only thing I was told you might have to take the bootloader line out of the update script, but so far I haven't had to at all.

just wanted to clarify, i'm already rooted, so i was going to follow the guide from my first post (since this guide has ZIP files i can flash in CWM):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2321310
Flashing in recovery
If you've downloaded a flashable .ZIP from above, copy it to your SD card or internal storage. Reboot your phone into recovery mode (you can do this by holding "Volume Up" and "Home" while powering on your device; let go of the buttons when you see "Recovery booting..." in blue text in the top left of the screen) and install the .ZIP as an update. Reboot, and you're done.
Note: After flashing in recovery, you need to reboot before you (and ROM installers) actually see the new version number.

would i reboot first, then flash a new ROM?
or should i flash the bootloader, then immediately flash the new ROM?
UPDATE: so i ended up just following the ZIP file guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2321310
and now i don't have data or wifi. i flashed the modem from here:

ANOTHER UPDATE:
after i went into recovery, factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik. the phone is recognizing wifi and data now. woo!

[Q] Downgrading CM11 to stock 4.3 on i747M

I know there are a few threads regarding this issue but I can't seem to find a definitive answer.
I am currently running stock 4.3 jellybean (rooted). My phone hasn't received the 4.4 KitKat update yet, so I wanted to install CM11 in order to get KitKat on my s3. However, I heard CM11 can be buggy on the s3, so in case things go south, I want to be able to revert back to the stock 4.3 rom. Some people have said that you can easily flash the stock ROM via ODIN. However, others said that downgrading from 4.4.2 to 4.3 will hard brick the device since installing CM11 updates the boot loader. So downgrading to 4.3 stock with a 4.4.2 boot loader will cause a hard brick according to other threads I've seen. My question is, how can I downgrade from CM11 to stock 4.3 safely without bricking? Thanks in advance.
If you are sure you are using a Canadian version of the i747m, you can flash back to stock in Odin using a stock 4.3 ROM for the phone's original carrier (Bell, Rogers, Telus).

Yes I got the phone from Rogers, it's most definitely i747M. But do I have to worry about any issues with the bootloader? I'm assuming installing CM11 will install the 4.4.2 bootloader, so if I choose to downgrade to the stock 4.3 rom, will it cause any issues seeing as I'm running a 4.3 rom with a 4.4.2 bootloader? I just want to make sure because I heard it can cause some serious problems if the bootloader is newer than the rom.

I have never come across a custom ROM that touches the bootloader. A compatible bootloader has to be loaded on the phone before you attempt to install the custom ROM. Supported bootloaders can be found in the ROM's updater script.
I assume your phone has no warranty since you rooted it on stock 4.3. Did you root it by installing a pre-rooted ROM?
You could copy a ROM to your external SD card, install Philz Touch via Odin, reboot directly to recovery, create a nandroid backup, wipe cache, Dalvik, data, and install your KK ROM.

Okay, I was just making sure because I know OTA updates can change the bootloader, so I just wanted to make sure the custom roms don't do that. As for the custom recovery, are you recommending Philz Touch over CWM and TWRP? Do you know which custom recovery is installed from the CM installer?

Oh and one more question, my phone was originally carrier locked to Rogers and unrooted on 4.3 jelly bean. I brought it in to a cell store for them to carrier unlock it for me, but they used a rooting method to unlock it (because SuperSU was installed on it when I brought it back). They didn't unlock it with a code, so I'm guessing they used something like Samsung Tool or z3x shell. If I install CM11, will I lose the unlock, considering it's more of a "soft unlock", or is the unlock permanent regardless of how many roms I flash? Thanks for your help!

Philz is based on the latest release of CWM and I prefer CWM over TWRP because I had problems flashing ROMs. Once I switched to Philz/CWM, no more problems.

The unlock should be permanent. I unlocked it using the free method when on 4.1.1 and no ROM has ever caused it to re-lock. Reflashing a completely stock ROM, including the bootloader, did not relock the phone.
Please remember that flashing and changing ROMs will always carry a risk of soft bricking or hard bricking your phone. Make sure you read all of the guides and be prepared for disaster.

[Q] Updating a already Rooted Galaxy S3 that's on 4.1?

I rooted my dad's phone a while back ago so he can use tethering in case of emergencies etc. He recently got a smart watch and I wanted to updated it so that he can use it. But it has not been touched since that day. I essentially want rooted stock rom, I'm unaware of where to find that the closest I can find is StockMod kitkat. Which seems to not work on ATT phones? I just want to make sure that I don't brick his only phone on christmas. So is there something I should be aware of?
His model is SGH-i747
Baseband
i747UCDLK3
Build number
jro03
So how do I go about upgrading it? Can I just flash TWRP and flash any rom using TWRP?
I found this, so I should install new TWRP, then flash a specified kernel then flash rom? would this be safe route?
Some of the latest ROMs require a 4.4.2 bootloader and modem.
The simplest and safest way to get the latest bootloader may be to flash back to unrooted stock 4.1.1 and run OTA updates until the phone is running the latest KK ROM. You can then flash TWRP or CWM and a custom ROM.

Would this require flashing with ODIN? I just want it so that it works with root is not required anymore.
Yes, you would flash the 4.1.1 stock ATT ROM via Odin. I prefer Odin 3.07.
You cannot install OTA updates with root.
You can try flashing just the bootloader and modem but I prefer the long slow route of OTA updates.
I rather do it this way, manually so my dad can enjoy it today. I was wondering how can I update it's TWRP? it's at 2.3 but the TWRP manager keeps crashing when I update it.
I highly recommend the latest d2lte version of Philz Touch for recovery.
https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2lte/
Ok I ****ed up, flash that kernel and did whatever and bam ****ed up. Not working... ****, I still ahve download mode and Recovery but it will not boot into the OS. I get a flash of samsung and then nothing else happends...****
I decided to flash stock DLK3 in odin. Then let the updates take it course (my dad doesn't need root) Where Can I find the file?
The stock ATT firmware is on sammobile.com.
If you want root, OTA to the latest 4.4.2, install Philz, flash supersu via recovery.

Stock Recovery and Cache for enabling OTA after CF Auto Root

These files will restore stock recovery and cache for those who have rooted with CF Auto Root, so that you can return those partitions to factory status for an OTA. Remember that any changes to /system in Lollipop nullifies OTA capability so you also need to undo any changes you've made, restore any bloat, unroot from within SuperSU, etc. For those who used CF and have done minimal mods or changes, this is merely a faster (both in terms of download time and flash time) way of restoring recovery and cache (which are modified when you flash CF Auto Root) than flashing the full stock tar. If you've deleted a whole bunch of bloat, installed Xposed, flashed mods in recovery, etc. then you probably just wanna use the full tar
Flash via Odin PDA/AP slot.

AHHHH!! You are a God! Thanks so much :good:
I flashed the stock rom downloaded directly from Sammobile and it still didn't allow OTA. It said that my phone had been modified... Not sure if I missed something because it stuck in a bootloop with the stock ROM after TWRP unless I flash Unikernel. Maybe the newest 5.1.1 doesn't allow OTA. I tried it with the OFE ROM completely stock.

If you install a non-stock recovery (like TWRP) you cannot take OTA updates. Any version, doesn't matter.
Follow the guide posted at http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s6/general/how-to-to-100-stock-root-t3075448 and you will have the latest version with custom recovery and root.
Or, if OTA updates are crucial to you, Odin the TAR file and stop there.
Mine wasn't working after I flashed the stock rom from Sammobile before I flashed twrp, since it wouldn't update I figured I needed twrp to stay up to date from now on but I'm not trying to post bad information to anyone, it wasn't working for me but maybe these caches can bring back OTA. I wish there was a way to get Samsung pay working.

BootLoop after downgrade

My M919 has MM on it. I want to unlock it. I downgrade the modem to MDL first.
It still working when MM using MDL modem.
Then I flash TMB-M919UVUFNB4-20140314115123 on it.
Now it's bootloop on the T-mobile screen.
My bootloader is FOK3 before I flash TMB-M919UVUFNB4-20140314115123.
Basically, I need it unlock and get my phone work.
please help.

EDIT, now I flash the M919UVUFOK3 and still bootloop.
I believe the phone must be running a stock rom before downgrading the modem.

Are you going to unlock via code or regionlockaway? Unlock code requires a stock Samsung dialler. Regionlockaway requires a stock Samsung rom running the old modem and root.
If it's bootlooping, perform a factory wipe using stock recovery before booting the stock rom for the first time.

Flash stock rom then use the volume up and power to boot into recovery. Use the same method that is used to boot into twrp.
