Droid Incredible 2 hboot 0.98 downgrade problems
I'm new to rooting android devices, I picked up this Incredible 2 from my friend and it was bricked and locked on the HTC screen during boot up. I managed to unlock the bootloader, throw in the Team Win Recovery and reinstalled adamBONESTOCK rom, I've been trying to downgrade my bootloader to 0.97 to get S-Off and install CM but every time I use the vivow downgrade it puts my phone in a bootloop and I have to reinstall adams to even get back on my OS, can someone help me out here?

The tool was meant for a stock rom. If you are already running a rooted ROM, try commenting out the three zergrush lines in the script. The zergrush temproot is probably incompatible with your ROM and causing the boot loops.

Can anyone help me?
I am new to trying to root my HTC Incredible 2
So far I have been able to unlock the Bootloader and installed TeamWin Recovery
Now I was following the adb> instruction found on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1298990 - all with the hope of finally getting my Droid to S=off.
I got to the instruction adb shell /data/local/tmp/zergRush

Beginners questions.

Okayy, so
i want to get started with all the " Rooting " and installing those awesome " Custom Roms " But of course i have a couple of questions. Since its the first time i am experimenting with android devices. I jailbreaked my iPhone but i already found out that its not quite the same as rooting and installing custom roms.
Now about the questions.
I am a poor scholar with no money and can't afford it to lose my cellphone So. what is the chance of bricking my desire hd meanwhile the rooting process ? i already googled a few times but can't seem to find anyone who bricked it am i right ?
And is there somewhere a list where all the terms will be explained ?
like S-OFF Hboot the diffrence between Clockworkmod and Cynogenmod and all of that ?
Many Many Thanks ! ( And i would thank you even more if you hit that reply button :'D )
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Nobody has bricked a Desire HD yet while rooting or S-OFFing it, so it is relatively safe. The process itself is considered dangerous, but for example my S-OFF tools check so much things before continuing, that there should not be a problem.
Check the android dev subforum, there is a sticky roll up thread that contains useful links. Read the introductory guide first, it explains a lot of things.
ClockworkMod: a custom "application" in your phone, that can flash (write) any ROM (custom software including operating system). It does not depend on the OS, so it is useful for even the most hopeless situations where your system does not boot for whatever reason.
CyanogenMod on the other hand is simply a ROM, based on years of hard work. It does not contain HTC Sense.

I think it is only really possible to brick your phone when doing the ENG S-OFF.
Read carefully, do the right steps and you have 5% risk to all of it i guess
Can u plz tel me the rooting what steps have to do after rooting and how can I install froyo for my x10mini....thanx

Check Android Development... cant be very different from it
Good Luck
Okay i wanted to get started, found this tutorial on the interwebz
http://hemorrdroids.net/how-to-root-s-off-and-install-custom-roms-on-the-desire-hd/
thought this was exactly what i wanted to do but now i'm already stuck when i want to downgrade it ?
The first time when i did the last adb shell it gave me the "#" wich should mean it is not right, i am pretty sure i dont have a temp root because i haven't done anything to my phone until today.
So i tried the steps again but when i hit enter while entering this command:
adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter
i get the following error : mmap<> failed. Operation not permitted
I won't continue if i get an error so.. any help OR another tutorial wich gives me exactly what i want ?
A reboot of the device seems to work thanks anyways.
Downgraded my device succesfully.

I rooted my phone for the first time two days ago and I got the same error as you did. I tried just of curiousity to change this command:
"adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter"
To this:
"adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/psneuter"
And it solved my problem, let me know if it helped.

I guess I should have know about that, sorry. I wish I could help you, but I have a G-2 and don't have any experience with that method.
I recently used this method successfully, so ill try and help.
I think it may have something to do with the step when you enter in your command prompt:
/data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.33.405.5
exit
This step should spoof your version number so you can install the earlier software. You also need to make sure you do have temproot before this step, indicated by the # sign as opposed to the $. I would suggest doing all the steps again, starting with pushing all of the files again. When you get to the above step, check to see that you dont get any errors. If it all works this time round, it should let you install the earlier rom.
Another thing would be to redownload all of the files again to make sure they are all fine, and none of them are corrupt. I actually used the files off the cyanogenmod wiki, which has the same steps as your link, but with a newer gfree. maybe that could be the problem. But definately do the steps again and keep an eye out for any reported errors.
I did all of the steps twice before it worked for me.
I can't get temproot. How you get it?
I can realize the 1-3 steps, but in 4 appears this mensage:
adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp
"cannot stat 'psneuter' : No such file or directory
The desire z without root or temroot no is not read only?
I cant do this step. Where you can get temproot to this?
Thanks!

[Q] Problem with Downgrading DHD build 2.36

Ok - firstly I know that to 'root' a 2.3.3 DHD you need to downgrade, root, 'S-off' then (re)upgrade,
AND I know that with build 2.37 it is not currently possible to do so
Since I can't post in the devlopment threads (I'm a 'newbie' - not enough posts) I'm having to increase my post count before I can & so hence this post
But I've got a weird problem with my phone..
A bit of background first
- I had Android 2.2 on an Unbranded DHD (well, I think it is - no network customisation & it can use any SIM card)
- I used Visonary+ (r14) to 'PERMROOT' the phone
- But I never did the 's-off' business (I never planned to install a Custom ROM so thought I'll never need to)
I did a FOTA upgrade to 2.3.3
Phone info now shows
Android Version: 2.3.3
HTC Sense Version: 2.1
Baseband version: 12.54.60.25U_26.09.04.11_M2
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.10-g0956377, [email protected] #1, Tue Mar 29 06:10:15 CST 2011
Build number: 2.36.405.8 CL47853 release-keys
Software number: 2.36.405.8
Browser version: WebKit/533.1
So I've tried downgrading to older version - as mentioned in this thread (& since it's an unbranded phone - I don't need a 'goldcard')...
...now, everything goes smoothly up until Step 2b (since I have Android 2.3.3 & Build 2.36), but when I type in 'adb shell' instead of the # I get the $
Now I've been searching/reading here that this is ONLY suppose to happen on Build 2.37 - so why am I getting it on 2.36 ??
I can only guess that there are in fact DIFFERENT 2.36 builds & the version I have is a newer version that has had whatever exploit patched
Can any 'experts' confirm this ?
If it's true then I guess I'm one of the many that'll have to wait for a 'proper' root exploit to appear
You seem to have the same software stuff as me im probably more noob than you, so I will watch this thread! hopefully you get help soon
Edit- if you don't mind , i might aswell ask you a question, as you are a step ahead of me....
Section 2b [For Gingerbread ROMs, 2.x]
Connect Desire HD to a computer. Charge only, USB Debugging enabled!
Open up a cmd and go to Downgrade folder, execute commands:
Code:
adb push misc_version /data/local/tmp
adb push GingerBreak /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/GingerBreak
adb shell
./data/local/tmp/GingerBreak
What is a cmd???
thanks
'CMD' is the 'Command Prompt'
If you use Windows (this is for XP, it should be the same for Vista and '7')
Click on the [ Start ] button
(I think on Vista/7 it's a circular icon bottom left of the taskbar)
Click on 'Run'
In the box that shows up - type in 'CMD'
You then get a window pop up that virtually a black screen with something like
Code:
Microsoft Windows XP
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:\>
It's this that you then have to type in the commands to root the phone (if it was actually working that is )
yay i done it! rooted and got CM7 to work, although , android market is not installed (wth?)
Well done, glad some1 had luck with it.... out of curiousity though
Did YOU have Android 2.3.3 ?? - & if you did do you happen to remember the build number of it ??
I'm still puzzled as to why I get '$' instead of the '#' if I had Build 2.36
Yeah I was 2.3.3 , I think everything was pretty similar to yours...I did get a $, but I continued anyway writing everything else and ended up with the #
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Ah right.....
I didn't continue from that point - 'cos I thought I did something wrong & that's why I got the '$' & not the '#'
I'm also guessing you did the 'Visionary+' to give you temp/perm root (I forgot to mention that that little bit of info, although it IS in the Radio S-Off guide ) then used the 'Radio S-off' tool ??
& After that have you updated BACK to 2.3.3 again (& still got root) & if so was it using the OTA (Over The Airways) method or did you install a custom ROM ??
(I only want Root so that I can install 'adfree' & 'Droidwall' but still use HTC's own firmware - I'm not interested in custom ROMS or ClockworkMod ATM)

You need to instal gapps after flashing Cyanogen.
By the way Cyanogenmod is awesome - its a fair bit faster than bloated Sense.

Funnyily - that's the web page I looked at, after Googling, that led me here
I agree that there's more steps so less chance of things going wrong... but it didn't explain why I was getting a '$' instead of a '#'

Actually - I've sort off given up for the moment to attempt the rooting of the phone, hoping that a simple 'one-shot' method crops up eventually for 2.3.3 (like an updated Visionary ) so that I don't have to downgrade first
As said I'm not really interested in Custom ROM installation - just want to install a couple of root apps ('Droidwall' and 'adfree' are the main ones)
I am/was using the same thing as phil.cunningham67, [HTC Sync] & getting the same problem of adb being 'out of date' on each line, so I might just try that Android SDK pack/Java JDK combo at a later date myself & see if I can get it to work
If/when I do & still have problems - I'll know where to come for help
BTW - as for my OP question... do you know why I get a '$' instead of the '#' with my 2.36 build ??
Could it be because of the 'HTC Sync' adb being 'out of date' ??
Of course you will get $ after running Adb Shell command. You will only get a # after you run GingerBreak(the ./data/local/tmp/GingerBreak part) and you successfully hack you DHD.
And just to mention, there is no way to Perm root the FOTA update 2.36 (2.3.3) from HTC, you can only temp root it to downgrade I am afraid.
Well.... as long as I can 'downgrade' > [temp] 'root' > 'S-off' > FOTA upgrade to 2.3.3
AND then still be able install those couple of programs I've mentioned (maybe a couple more) - I'll be happy
Might even try over the weekend if I'm not too busy

I wouldn't think so my friend. S-Off is not enough to run programs that require Root access. You need to have Perm Root, or you need to do the process of Temp rooting everytime you reboot your phone.
The easiest solution ofc will be downgrade> Temp Root> PermRoot> S-Off> Eng S-Off> Flash recovery> Flash a custom Rom with near stock experience, like the seraphic stock GB http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059563&highlight=seraphic
Goodluck
Well - considering I only used 'temp root' using Visionary+ (R14) when I was on Android 2.2 & that I very rarely had need to reboot the phone - I can't see that being much of a problem
Even with temp root - 'Droidwall' and 'Adfree' worked perfectly OK before my FOTA, & that's basically all I want
Without S-OFF any changes you make to /system will not remain after a reboot.
If you ENG & Radio S-OFF then FOTA to 2.3, ENG & Radio S-OFF remain OFF you can then use Gingerbreak to achieve root. Sorted.

I am interested in learning more about what was fixed on phil.cunningham67, cause @ the moment I am suffering from tying to figure a way to root... my current OTA update i just got ran my software # to 2.43.661.1
I am curious... is the a new downgrade package that has to be made yet for me to get the ability to downgrade, root, etc?
There were a number of problems Phil had.
1) His adb was outdated
2) He repeatedly got the VOLD error
3) Then the boomsh error
4) He didn't really know what to do (no disrespect to Phil).
Via TeamViewer I guided him through the process, showing him the steps taken.
In the end we rooted/downgraded/rooted again/S-OFF'd/customised.
It took about 2 hours from start to finish.

How would one go about getting your services if you believed you could downgrade Software version # 2.43.661.1
From what I've been reading, it is not yet possible to downgrade this high of version as of yet.
Would definitely be interested in rooting since the Update has may flaws which have driven me mad.

Need Help gaining S-off on Evo 4G
I have an EVO 4G that was updated to 2.3.5. I tried downgrading it with tacoroot with the plan to use REVOLUTIONARY afterwards but hit wall after wall going that rout so I... I gave up... But I'm trying again! this time I used HTC DEV to unlock the bootloader and now I'm trying to get S-off so I can have a full root and not HTC's version of root.
I need to know what my next step should be...
I am following the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751796
I have unlocked the bootloader using HTCDEV, I'm trying to work off the instructions for the next step(first step in the second thread) The thread starts "Get S-OFF after using HTCDev Unlock (HSO)" I've downloaded and unzipped the files ,all but the one saying not to unzip, and started the command prompts. Everything goes well until the command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
I keep getting this error:
C:\fastboot-win>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
sending 'recovery' (5330 KB)... OKAY [ 1.705s]
writing 'recovery'... FAILED (remote: image update error)
finished. total time: 1.712s
I have the recovery.img in the proper folder (C:fastboot-win) and it seems to be finding the file but not writing it to my Evo. Any Ideas? I've re-downloaded and un-zipped the file a couple times thinking maybe the download was corrupt.
Another Question. The code I'm inputting is flashing a recovery image and superuser powers. right? If I'm right this means I could bypass these instructions and just download TWRP and superuser myself right?
I know this is an old phone and tech. but I dropped my rooted kindle(I LOVED THAT THING) in some H2O, so I've pulled my trusty EVO out of the box! Any help would be greatly appreciated, tomorrow will be day three of climbing and trying to break down the walls in my way

Need the HTC Desire downgrade Froyo 2.2 and 2.1 zips
This is my first time asking for help, I'm stuck with the stock 2.3.3 Gingerbread rom. I came from a Froyo rom, with updated HBoot 1.03.0001 (from original 0.93.0001) as I was forced to do it, in order to get unlocked my bootloader (HTCDev bootloader unlock procedure). An unrecoverable system error raised, this forced me to reflash its rom, but all was in vain, as soon as I tried to flash a room, I got the 155 error. Finally I managed to create a goldcard and I was able to downgrade my Desire HBoot from 1.03.0001 to 1.02.0001 and also to flash the original HTC 2.3.3 Gingerbread rom. But now, I can't unlock my bootloader, as rom is signed as 3.14.405.1 and as soon as I try to upgrade my HBoot I get an error message about the rom (I'm requested to flash the 2.29.405.14 (my original rom)) and I get an error message if I try to do it. (Error 140).
That's why I need help, anyone so gentle to re-upload the Donwgrade Utility 2.2 and 2.1? Unrevoked and Revolutionary sites are not working, so I really need those files if I want to have a chance of unlock my bootloader.
Thank you very much in advance. Best regards.
hi!
i have same problem
try this:
1. Make GoldCard
2. Load PreRooted 2.33 https://
yadi.sk/d/mQknva1kJZpWo
rename to update.zip load an SD
3. Run stock recovery in HBOOT (vol down+power) -- in recovery Vol UP + POWER ------- select the wipe data/factory reset option, then select the option to Apply sdcard:update.zip
if goes well you have root
post results here
UPD: If you have ROOT you can downgrade you firmware through this Tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1550397
see item 17:
"Open misc.img in the current directory, and change line 11 which contains the version number of your current ROM. Change it by number of the future ROM you want to install(Find at Android rom update utility screen after run RUU)
Changes will appear in red. Save the file to misc0.img."
Thanks but it doesn't work
Hello Desire Bravo,
It's not working
"E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

Nothing works... It's pointless... Locked bootloader, it's not rooted, recovery is not working properly... This seems to be the end.
Thank you very much for your help, you have been very kind.
I've just tried this, it doesn't work...
an attempt to apply "update.zip" lead to reboot - I think, kernel prevents writing in secured areas with reboot
A new hope raises
Hi again, I have seen this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=62647076#post62647076
This could be our only chance of getting our devices unlocked and rooted, I wanted to try it, but:
1) "Downgrade.zip" is missing
2) Second "PB99IMG.zip" file is also missing.
3) I don't know how to overwrite the "Misc" partition.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you very much in advance. Best regards.
2.29.405.14. this is OTA UPDAte to RUU 2.29.405.5 - install first 2.29.405.5 firmware. Or you can try any version firmware listened on htc dev site. You can try this manual methode to manually enter that version what it is necessary, but I am not sure that it will work http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1550397
and STOP! :: if you have hboot 0.93 or 0.75, it is possible to make full s-off, but if you now unlock with htcdev, this update hboot to 1.03, and its unposible to downgrade hboot
[@Bravo Desire,
Hi again,
Ok, so the second "PB99IMG.zip" is the OTA update of RUU 2.29.405.5. Ok, got it, thanks !!!
In which one of those 7 steps should I flash the firmware 2.29.405.5 (The first PB99IMG.zip)? And the last one, how can I overwrite the "misc" partition?
No, I tried the "Downgrade Desire Hboot 1.03" tutorial and it didn't worked for me.
Thank you very much in advance. Best regards.

@Desire Bravo
Hi again Desire Bravo,
No, sorry, I don't speak russian.
Read the step4 of this tutorial:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62647076&postcount=1260
As you can see 2alx says that you have to overwrite "misc" partition with the content of the downgrade folder, but he doesn't tell a word about how to do it. Is this an automated process by "downgrader.bat" or should I do it manually?
Thank you very much in advance. Best regards.
ok now clear ) ) its automated, but before you need make temporary root with doomloard utility. But wait , I 'll post later today a program that will do everything automatically and do not need to install any firmware
@Desire Bravo,
DooMLoRD is not able to root my phone, when it restarts, it's not rooted, so I can't continue. I'm afraid that my phone can't be rooted.
Thank you very much anyway. Best regards.
true, I made another program without rebooting
