Ive recently upgraded to the Note II . My last device was a rooted DHD. The only reason I had to root was the fact it never made it past 2.3 and I wanted the newer os', and I was quite pleased to run 4.1.2 and have all the new features such as Google Now, ect. NOW, that I have official 4.1.1 please tell me the advantages to rooting such a new device? :cyclops:
My main reason for rooting is security and privacy and then the use of a decent firewall: DroidWall or Avast. I deem it necessary on such device.

I have AVG Pro on my OFW is this in any way less secure?
Reason why I root is get rid of ads, install mods and few good apps that need root.

Backups and annoying adds removal are my main reasons.
Edit: to have all in 240 dpi , was also main reason for me, Note 2 really looks better in 240 compared to default 320.

What roms would you recommend? Also, would I have any troubles rooting or flashing anything since my model is actually SGH-I317M? Thanks.
Sent from my SGH-I317M using xda app-developers app
Indeed, backup also and some file-sharing applications such as Samba.
Regarding Firewalls, I do like DroidWall (or as incorporated into Avast) for its customization.
Titanium Backup & Custom Roms
addaway --> browsing and apps without adds
droid wall --> stopping apps going online during 3g, safes maybe also energy
Mods (xplorer) --> use all apps in Multiwindow, use volume button for skipping song
Titanium Backup --> safe apps and delete some preinstalled apps
ES Explorer --> able to see every folder and delete for examples systemsounds
Light manager --> more options for the LED light
Antivirus is probably the least of your concerns. Just ROOT it and get custom ROMS. This is the GTN7100 section, you should check out the AT&T GN2 section for ROMS
Hello,
So I wrote my own battery saver app, which work for me I live in areas with weak signal
Maybe you can try also:
Zombie eat my battery - battery saver
Hi
Thanks for you're work
Any further info on you're app?
Is there an official page etc?
Does it play well with Franco / Greenify / Snapdragon battery guru?

Yes, me too. Users in Google Play will just download and use it, but here we like to know EVERYTHING!!! lol!
You'll have to give waaaay more info. A "turn me on/off" button and a pic of Mila Jovovich holding a gun won't cut it
And I mean not only here, people that find your app through the Play Store probably won't get interested in installing it due to the lack of information given. It will come across as rather shady to most people tbh
Give the people more info and your app might have a chance of making it!
Hahahaha
The app will turn off mobile data, started a few minutes after screen off. and then try to enable data, in incremental delays.
At night (started 0am), data won't be enabled again until 6am.
If you turn on screen, data will be enabled again.
Snapdragon battery guru: not compatible
Using my app, network location is not required
Greenify: compatible
Are there any plans to add wifi management as well? That would make it a keeper for me perhaps since i dont really get data where i am located. Just lousy E lol

I think wifi management is better in 4.2, and suck less battery even when connected.
But maybe.. I will add wifi management later

Its all a personal choice , here are mine :
1. Titanium Backup Pro - Backup app
2. Terminal Emulator - running your Linux command like EFS backup and more
3. Links2SD - Move apps from internal to External SD ( Note stores all app on internal storage)
4. ROM Manager - 1 stop rom control / flash
5. Triangle Away - reset your counter
6. BuildProp editor
7. Xposed Framework - Change your UI ( ex: transparent status , battery , lock screen and many many more customization)
8. ES-File explorer
9. AdAway - now not in playstore can download from XDA.
10. Tasker - Probably the best paid app out there
all the suggested apps are great
but it all comes down to what are u planning to do with ur device ......
Many were already mentioned, but to me:
Adaway (http://sufficientlysecure.org/index.php/adaway/)
Android Firewall (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jtschohl.androidfirewall)
Autorun Manager (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rs.autorun&hl=en)
Greenify (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.greenify&hl=en)
Tasker + Secure Settings (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dinglisch.android.taskerm&hl=en)
Titanium Backup (or similar app that allows freezes and app+data backups)
SD Maid (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.thedarken.sdm.unlocker&hl=en)
Lumberjack (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.solarnz.apps.lumberjack&hl=en)
GMD SPen (useful for gestures and for screen auto-off when inserting pen)
First thing I do to my phone:
-Freeze useless apps with Titanium
-Stop apps from auto-starting with Autorun Manager
-Add some apps to Greenify
(these steps save me lots of RAM and I guess, CPU cycles).
Then Tasker+Secure Settings for automation (in my phone it ends up replacing several apps as it can be tweaked to do lots of stuff)
Android Firewall is a must too. I have it Deny All by default and only allow apps that I know are needing Wifi or 3G access. The rest are not allowed to connect to the outside world.
Most likely you will also need something like
SuperSU https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu&hl=en
Busybox https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox&hl=en
And just for fun, why not Live Dmesg ? (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.livedmesg.lite&hl=en)

Greenify definitely recommended ! Hibernates your App till you manually open it again. After using it , it again hibernates thereby cutting off synch and services associated to it - which means you can use that app when ever you want at the same time ensuring it doesn't keep lingering at the background when you are not using it :good: .. Till now saving me some good amount of RAM & Battery, the only drawback it cannot hibernate system apps - like Google Music , which keeps auto starting .

Chrome beta works great.
Sent from rooted carbon note 2, with the xda app.
not much root apps i use myself though,
- titanium backup
- mobile odin (trying it out at the moment)
- gmd spen (once i switch to 4.2.2/4.3 still need to get a new sd-card first )
- SG USB Mass Storage Enabler (added to my list after i read about it, awesome app to get back the normal mass storage instead of the MTP connection samsung comes bundled with)
- lucky patcher (don't know if i can name that one here if not please remove this line ^^)
- adaway
there's only 2 apps i really use though, thats TB for my backups and adaway to get rid of those pesky adds mobile odin is something i have just i case, not something i really use on a regular basis.
gmd spen might be scratched from the list, and usb mass storage enabler as well, still gotta try out if that one actually increases anything in the transfer speed, if not i'm just gonna stick with the MTP as i can use my device at the same time then .

Hi All,
I've successfully rooted my Tab S 8.4 without any great drama and enabled write access to the SD Card/Frozen some bloat/Installed Adaware etc.
Next on my to-do list is to try and get Privacy Guard working so I can block Facebook and other apps from accessing my contacts and calendar.
Anyone got any ideas if this can be done on the stock ROM without having to go down the road of flashing a custom ROM?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Xposed framework work with at least the Gravity Box module but several others maybe to your liking. I don't know if Viper4Android works on the Tab S 8.4 bit it is well worth a look see. If it does work then you can look forward to a dramatic improvement in audio quality for both headsets and speakers. All can be found on XDA.

Ive been running the Hybrid-x ROM for some time. I read an article the other day about how some (or all?) Apps have complete access to your phone. Is there a way (besides uninstalling) to prevent Apps from have free reign on your phone? Too, is there anyone custom ROM that has better security and privacy features than another? Many thanks!

Look up Ap op"s it is a function Google has hidden in the OS.. Essentially it is a permissions manager.... Exposed has a module called Ap op's to enable the function. .
You can disable permissions for applications but be prepared that disabling too many can break the application. . You can always change back and forth experimenting on what restricted permissions work best for any individual application. ..

Used to use droid wall. Not sure if it works on lollipop.
Using the xprivacy module for xposed is the only real option. There are tons of reasons to root and use xposed but this is a great one. It sort of works on 5.1 but is really nest supported in kk (I'm staying on kk until there's a real reason to move off, way too many issues with lollipop).
