Is it necessary to kill background apps? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Do you even have to go into multitask, and swipe away apps running in the background, or is it a waste of time?

Depends on app, some consume more battery than others.

For example, games? I heard its actually better to leave them in the background, because android is so advanced now, it knows how to handle unused apps, and killing them actually takes more battery.
Besides games, and obvious apps.
I'm talking more bout apps like twitter, and things like that.

It depends on app permissions , if they spend a lot of time updating and syncing they can suck up your battery.

If the apps are doing nothing in resident memory it is more efficient to leave them there.

Anyone using LookOut on their SGSII?

Just curious who else is using the LookOut app?
I've been using it on my past three devices, Galaxy4G, LG G2X and SGSII...seems pretty cool... I don't know... what do you all think?
1. Curious how much system resource it uses to be running in the background constantly?
2. How much does it really effect the battery?
3. Is it worth even having?
Pros:
I like the locate, back up and scan features.
i use it, also for the location (in case i lose it) and it scans my apps (i dont know if it actually makes a difference)...but it doesnt seem to lag my phone at all and there is no noticeable battery drain
that is the first thing i removed from the stock ROM
Can you list the reasons why?

on my old phones, it slowed them down, in this phone i don't think it will make any speed difference
but we are safe, and i see no reason to use it
if you just wan GPS tracking, the build in Google Maps feature have it
and there are tons of other phone retrieval apps that consumes less resources than look out, and can be activated with SMS
also look out is extremely annoying as they keep spamming you with junk mail for as long as you are using their app

Are task killers okay to use?

Hey guys sorry if this is a stupid question, but I heard using task killer has some sort of negative effect? If I downloaded the latest task killer from the market would it hurt anything when I use it? I've avoided them forever and now I'm trying to save as much battery as possible so I figured i'd get a task killer. Any advice would be appreciated

If you wanna save battery underclock and/or freeze active services you don't use.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
My understanding is sometimes they kill services that android needs running, causing android to just start them up again and wasting more battery. From my experience juice defender is a better option for battery saving.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
If you know what you are doing, yes. If an Android service keeps showing up then set it to ignore or whitelist it. There are still apps out there that once loaded do not release the memory back to the system so killing those is effective. If there are tons of apps in the task killer list then you will notice your phone slow down so that BS about android handling memory is just that. It is also useful to see apps that you don't use loading parts into memory. You can freeze them, list them in Autostarts or uninstall them if they are not really used.
Uninstall it and just use the v6 script set to aggressive.

I spent the last day or so setting up v6 on aokp and cm9 and finally got jd ultimate, but could one of you tell me what I would need to get rid of in the init.d folder to make the settings stick so I wouldn't have to have a script run at boot? It doesn't really bother me I just figured I'd ask

[APP] Greenify - Save Battery Life

I discovered this gem of an app a couple months ago thanks to an article on Lifehacker. Lifehacker's app recommendations can be hit or miss, so I took this with a grain of salt. But after trying it for a couple months, I couldn't be happier with the results and it's become one of my absolute favorite apps. I've noticed a few of you mentioning it in various forums as well, so apparently word has gotten around! But to those of you who have yet to try Greenify, I would highly recommend it. Basically it "auto-hibernates apps". So, for instance, if you have the Facebook app, but don't necessarily care to have it running in the background eating valuable battery life, Greenify will hibernate that app for you. It's very simple to set up and it has definitely extended my battery life after adding around 7-8 apps to my hibernate list. I'm attaching the Lifehacker article and Google Play links below.

basically, go into "manage apps" -> "running apps" and determine which apps are running that you really do NOT NEED to be running all the time. for me, it was facebook, scramble with friends, beat the streak, play music, and a few others. I then open the greenify app, and selected just those apps. then, greenify will hibernate them so that they are not running in the background. only downside is that I do not get notifications for those apps (which is fine by me). however, I can still access them just fine and they launch very quickly/smoothly as if they were not hibernating.
How did you Greenify Play Music? I don't see it on the list. Is that considered a system app?

Sorry, I had searched Greenify and got to this Razer forum, I have a Nexus 7. "Home" sends me to my home page on it. I used app/mover to change Play Music to a user app (but now Music is gone and won't install from Play Store...) Don't use it much anyway, but be nice to figure out Greenifying system apps.

Can anybody help me out by explaining (or linking to me an article that explains) how Greenify actually works its magic? Does it just run a service in the background that is constantly monitors active processes that have been "Greenified" and forces these processes to go into "Hibernate" mode when the screen is off, and prevents any partial wakes?
Thanks guys.
Before greenify I would unplug my phone at 930 pm and wake up at 5 am and the battery would be at 78%, with greenify doing the same method I only drop to 88%!

Debloat listed apps to speed up or eliminate lag. Uninstall apps not needed, Freeze apps or system files you're not sure to Uninstall. And then create or wait for custom roms.

System App Remover (root) is excellent for this.
This is excellent free app for debloating. It tells you what can be safely removed and what should be left alone and allows for batch uninstall.

Well played
Big one for me is getting up and running quick with Titanium Backup restores. Bought before root was out this time but normally.
Disabling stuff too.
Adblock plus, Lucky patcher
Also upgrade Google Maps back to 6.14.4 is a huge one on my phone. Not so much on the tablet but I may use it in the car more. Will need My Maps for travel.
Custom ROM's when they are out.
Probably forgetting something.

Changing dpi of apps because in some of them the fonts are too small.

I've never rooted a Samsung device before. Is it worth it to do now or wait until there are roms available? Do you worry about warranty if you find a hardware issue?
How much would you say debloating helped with speeding up your device? Does it fix the delay from when you press the home button and the animation running? Does it smooth out the stuttering in animations?

How will you use google map/navigator on the tablet? Is your table with 4G? As far as I know google map requires network access.
I am using CoPilot for navigating in the car. It uses downloaded maps.
With my phone I have been using google navigation but I did not like it too much. It is too insistent with its idea of where to go. It will only
recalculate the route after many miles passed its suggested direction. I had this issue in highway, it may be different in city navigation.
I rooted my S 8.4 wifi (T700) and cleaned bloatware.. now I would like to install twrp or cwm.. to make a backup and play deeper with the toy..
Has anyone done it already? Any different from other androids?
Thx.
@Peter234: Probably tethering. I have zero problems using my Note 3 as a hotspot. I also think that Google Maps will let you 'cache' a route as well; IIRC it's one of the Labs features.

Debloating doubles your battery life, and the device will always respond much faster because those running system apps eat up a lot of RAM and CPU power. After I did a massive debloat, the lag and stuttering pretty much went away.
You can also install root apps, which can speed up your RAM, prolong battery life, and improve performance. My favorites are Greenify, SD Booster, and Autokiller.
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Got-ROOT-Here-are-the-root-Android-apps-you-must-try_id46065
De bloating does not double your battery life not even nearly double. Also 80% free RAM is no quicker than 20% free RAM. Sure, improvements can be had but let's keep things in the realm of reality here.

This is all I could do also.. you can disable most of the bloat.. but it's still there taking up space.
I wonder though.. does disabling really disable everything ? Without extensive testing and monitoring.. one can only wonder..

Ok. I thought you disabled the apps using the Settings>Application Manager route. In the application manager you can see many other apps also which are not listed as your apps but are running in the background and can be disabled. Also, using this method, for each app you can first clear the data and cache before disabling / turning off the app thereby freeing up some more space taken by these apps.
I would love to know this as well, specifically the ones not found in the app drawer
Is disabling the app like freezing the app?
