So I'm not entirely sure where to start with this one. I'm running myn's roms... was on RLS3 and went to update to RLS4 the other day. Did a nandroid backup via clockwork/ROM manager. The install of the new ROM took forever (over 30 minutes) and when it finished, for whatever reason clockwork didn't restart automatically like it usually does. When I did reboot the unit, it hung forever (I actually left it plugged in and booting while I took an hour nap)... so I finally rebooted it into recovery and restored my backup.
When the backup loaded I reset the phone, and the image was very broken. Actually to be fair, the image seemed fine... except for whatever system android uses to keep track of installed apps was corrupted. Most of my apps were missing, including core google ones. The marketplace, all of my file browsing apps (astro and root explorer) and even things like live wallpapers and maps were missing.
Next, I tried several things, including doing a fresh wipe and install of a working ROM (tried both myn 2 and 3) and then tried restoring my backup again... no matter what the backup took me to this point (and yes I understand why that is... I was just hoping that the restore wasn't actually restoring some file that the ROM would put back... as unlikely as that was).
So at this point I'm over losing all my stuff to reinstall ... but I really want to keep my text messages and call history. I can't get anything installed to back them up though... since the market is missing, as well as anything like astro, etc. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for extracting the SMS/MMS and call history stuff out of the backup I have... or getting them backed up somehow when I'm loaded into my botched recovery. I still have full internet, call and SMS access... so if there were some web-based backup I could even run that (although I don't think there is). I'm at a bit of a loss... I'd really like to get the data I want backed up before I start new. At the moment I'm still using the phone as I can still get core functionality.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know. Thanks!
install AMON recovery to do your NAND's, install SMS backup and that will save your texts, and titanium backup any apps you want saved with data. thats how i do it, oh and install app brain as well to keep track of your installed apps

It sucked when romanger and clock work broke for me. Never again.
Clock doesn't wipe correctly. Search it.
Thanks... appreciate the reply... although still hoping someone can point me in the right direction to get what I currently have backed up considering the half-broken state my phone is currently in... either getting it out of the backup file somehow or somehow getting stuff installed on my phone without a market or a file manager.
If you flash the rom overtop of itself you want lose anything, so try that

So oddly enough that didn't work in of itself... but it did start me in the right direction. Most of my apps were still missing, but for whatever reason reflashing the rom made Astro re-appear in my app drawer. From there I browsed to the system/app folder and was able to install MyBackup Pro over itself somehow. I ran that to backup all my user data and wiped clean. My texts and other data are restoring right now on the fresh image.
So clockwork is definitely the culprit? What's a good alternative? I got used to using that for so long, I'm not even sure what else is out there anymore.
Thanks for your help G'man!
Go to clockwork and down at the bottom click install alternate recovery, viola

Hi all
I have recently started to have a backup problem using the clockwork mod recovery for Defy. I have used the recovery several times before (almost daily lol) and it have worked flawless, both backups and restore. Really great work with the recovery tenfar!
But now, it just keeps hangin at a point backing up a .png file:
"Finland_MTV3.png"
And it always hangs at this file (attached picture), so I can't back up my system anymore.
Just when I have made a pretty perfect running system for me tbh
I have tried to install the clockwork mod again, restart phone, format the sdcard, but nothing of that works.
Because I don't want to lose this setup I have not tried to do a restore, so I don't know if that works.
Yesterday i flashed my stock rom:
JRDNEM_U3_2.21.0_SIGNED_UCAJRDNEMARAB1B80AA028.0R_USAJORDANRTFR_P029_A006_HWp3_Service1FF
And deodexed the rom and enabled JIT with Higgsy's FrozenEclairDefy_V2.zip.
I then backup up my apps with Titanium Backup, restored sms, cleaned some blur widgets, overclocked with settings I used before with no prob, installed my own BlackStaBar theme and so on. Nothing I haven't done before really and the phone works just fine besides this.
Just to point out, I have not been able to do a backup at all with this setup.
Please help me guys!
Well I just solved it, I have no idea why it worked but it worked.
I searched for the file "Finland_MTV3.png" with root explorer and found out that it was associated with an installed app called "Tv.nu" with I always have had installed and backup-ed and restored with Titanium Backup.
First I tried to just delete the file itself to see if it was corrupted, but the recovery just stopped on another .png file associated with the app. Next step was to reinstall the app if all the files were corrupted, but no go.
So I finally deleted the app and it now works!
And if you watch my attached picture on my previous post you can see the word "Kanal" twice, well this didn't appear at all on the backup that succeeded just a minute ago. Strangely I recall seeing it on previous backups I have taken, I have no idea what it means. The backup that now worked also took a lot longer to complete.
Why the app halts the backup I'm clueless about, it have worked on every backup I have taken before.
After flashing runnymede v5.0 AIO, i'm not able to use titanium backup anymore, it says that it isn't able to get root access,
I tried busybox update from titanium backup itself, it failed,
Then the one from market, still not working
After that i checked if i had proper root, i did, but still i re-ran gingerbreak. Still no result. Is there any other solution? other root apps work..
That seems odd :/
Gonna sound fairly basic, but you gotta start somewhere.
Does Titanium show up in the allowed list in SU?
Has it requested SU?
Hav you e-mailed dev? sounds more like a bug if its the only root app not working.
my 2c.
No it doesn't, in the log it says denied for Titanium Backup, however it never showed me a pop up, and in the settings of SU i enabled the option that it allows every app, still no succes
it still sounds like a bug in the app from here. Like I said though, that's only my opinion. Which version of Titanium is it (not number, but paid or free)?
It is the paid version
Again, just a thought, but have you tried using the free version? Just to see if its Titanium in general or just that one app?
I have tried the free version.. No success..
Did a factory reset and flashed the rom again, Titanium backup working fine now.
As much as I love the Note 3 it has problems with backup apps. I haven't got Titanium Backup to work successfully. Now it won't even let me install it, it says not enough space. I just used Rom Toolbox, flashed a rom and restored and it and only some apps restored and no data restored. So what are people using successfully?
I use titanium Backup Pro 6.1.5.2 and I run the tb fixer app after each restore and I have no problems.
Edit: so you're aware, in still on 4.3 I've been doing this this way since i got my phone in January, but this works fine for me.
I'm on TMo KitKat and TB works fine for me. Always has. There was a time when I had to use the fixer app but that isn't an issue anymore. I have tried Helium Backup and it's ok, but it still doesn't touch TB imo. I believe Helium doesn't require root either.

I uninstalled TB so I could reinstall it and see if it would work. But now all I get is an error saying that there is "insufficient storage available", any idea how to fix that? Thanks.

That's an old TB issue but to fix it is simple:
1- Use any file explorer like Root Explorer or ES File Explorer, etc.
2- go to /data/app,
3- find and delete "com.kermidas.TitaniumBackup-1.odex".
Used TB since I got the phone. Now on Stock rooted 4.4.2 still works fine. I backup to the external SDcard which gets copied one of my servers at home every Sunday as an archive backup. Pictures, videos that might be on the phone, and other stuff is stored on the External as well.
Using current version as updated by Play market as updates come out.
Titanium backup is the king when it comes to backup, constantly supported and updated. Nothing competes with it imho, cloud backup is junk.

Mybackup Pro is a nice one too
I use TB all the time on my Note 3 and haven't had any problems. After a fresh install, I've also restored apps via Nandroid Manager Pro from a recent nandroid which saved me the trouble of going through and selecting or deselecting apps that I don't need installed but want a backup of. The process took a really long time but was pretty much automated. That will probably be my preferred method after a fresh flash, assuming that I have a recent enough nandroid.
Not a fan of My Backup Pro. Can you say DRM that prevents use by paying customers?... I bought the app on my Note 3 and installed it there and on my Note 8. It worked fine on the tablet, but on my Note 3, kept giving me an "invalid license" message. I tried all kinds of things: reinstall after wiping Dalvik / cache, running a few junk cleaner apps, but no love. Dev seemed like kind of a hard-ass when I emailed him for a refund, but got my money back after a few emails.
Anyways, yeah. What I said before.
Ok gonna try TB, has good feedbacks

Titanium Backup has worked flawlessly for me for many years, on HTC G2, SGS2, and now Note 3.
I just straight up use the app backup that es file explorer has built in to it. TB for me had many problems, ROM toolbox as mentioned actually only backed up/restored certain apps for me, but es has not failed me once since ice cream sandwich. As long as you keep your backups fresh...

Just back-up using TWRP
Ok folks, I've been googling for a while now and can't get a straight simple answer. I have an app, MoviePass, that once installed links to your Android ID and won't allow you to change but once per month. I didn't know this until already changing it once, so now I can't flash anything for another 30 damn days or the app won't work. Here's my question: How do I backup and then restore my Android ID? And before you answer , it has apparently changed in Oreo. I found a ton of posts showing how to do it with titanium Backup, but that method apparently no longer works in Oreo because of the changes made in how the Android ID is stored per app now or something. So please does anyone have a PROVEN method that you know 100% works that I can try ? I don't wanna downgrade to Nougat just to be able to do this lol. This app is holding me up from flashing awesomeness!
Stuck in the same boat.. I have to do a backup, then restore my old rom to use movie pass and then restore my backup. It's super annoying but at least it works. Hope there is a way to fix this for us who flash often

I actually managed to get it working. I have Titanium Backup Pro, not sure if you need that version or the free one, but I did a full backup of the app and then restored the app after flashing a new ROM and downloading Titanium Backup. The app restored, and MoviePass didn't give me any problems.

I've tried with titanium backup but it didn't work. I went from andoid N to O and my phone says it's a pixel XL (I have axon 7) so that may have something to do with it..?
Edit: So I just tried again and it worked! Thanks

No problem! Yeah they changed the way Android ID worked and how it is associated with applications in O versus previous versions of Android. Glad it worked !
If you want to restore the Android id of a previous version on the same phone then you have to just Backup "Settings storage" and then restore it.
