I have about 68mb free on ram and I noticed that useless apps are still running (e. g. Facebook, office suit, and other useless apps). I try to force stop them via settings but they still turn on by them selfs. Also, I think this is the reason why my battery does run out quick since theres apps runnimg in the background. No.
Using a task killer is like playing god, let the phone kill the app.
And anyway, apps usually start again and consume more ram after you have killed them.

Keiran is spot on. Try un-installing apps you don't use (be careful with system apps) and you can also stop apps from running at boot with something like Autorun Manager
Remember to make a nandroid backup before you do anything, just in case it goes wrong

No! Free RAM is wasted RAM.

Task killers do more harm than good
Facebook and other apps will start anyway after "killing" them, maybe itz time for root and delete those apps from autorun?

I feel that the reason you use the task manager is only to fully quit programs/games which you KNOW will just eat up memory for no good reason, and won't reload and take up more memory. I've done this when using apps such as OnLive, where I want to kill the program compeletely so it doesn't freeze my game when I exit out. Yah, I could have ust quit the program completely, but sometimes things come up and..... I also use it to kill processes which OBVIOUSLY are causing the phone to hang. In short, I use it as a KILL command and I make sure to use it sparingly. I think of it as a super force quit option. If you think of a task manager as that, then you should be fine with one. I understand that people think that having almost no RAM free is the right way to go, and I somewhat agree, but I feel that there are times when you should free up the ram so you can replace a bad thing with a good one. I don't want my browser, whcih is lagging all over the place for some reason to take away ram from my game, my keyboard, or my voice recognition (I use it a lot). Nope, I could be better served killing the browser completely and instead loading up some programs I use more freqently, or perhaps just reloading the browser in general.
Beez thats what I meant. I just want to use it to only disable the autorun. Is there app that does that? My phone is rooted.
There's an app called Android Assistant that has an option to disable apps from starting up on boot, and so does Rom Toolbox. Rom Toolbox has a lot more options, but Android Assistant is easier to use.
I like using the Autostarts app. It costs a buck but it works wonderfully at removing programs/processes from boot
Hi,
I've been using CM9beta2 on my Wonder for a while.
Now my phone it's starting to get too laggy so I'm trying to free up as much RAM as possible (having around 50MB available doesn't seem enough!).
However, many apps are always running, even though I disabled everything I could in the settings.
For example, google maps keeps regularly eating 5-10MB RAM, sometimes google Play too, etc...
Is there a way to keep apps out of RAM?
How do you do it?
The only solution I find otherwise, is to get the apk, and install apps when you need them, then uninstall them immediately...

5. Download and Install Use Auto Killer Memory Optimizer Pro 7 (Here it is), when install pick a preset 'Extreme' or 'Ultimate' depend on your games requirement. Your Ram will always free and it will kill automatically un-use apps

Thanks, but... wouldn't Auto Killer Memory use more battery (or RAM) than having the apps running?
I mean, having smth that checks every few minutes running apps and that closes them... then they reopen again, and the Auto Killer closes them again, and so on... doesn't seem the best solution!
Am I wrong?
Tx.

It really depend , but I try it and actually getting better result .
With CM9 rom there is a way to disable the apps that you don't need , just go to setting menu, chose manage apps, click the apps that you don't use , and click disable . But you have to make sure the apps that you disable WILL NOT effect other apps that in use . :silly:
Hi...there are two ways to do what you want to do....
The first is as you say to delete and re install the apps as you need them.....
The other way is to NOT delete them, but to FREEZE them. (This is the better option, and the option that I use) there are several apps that will do this, titanium backup (paid app) and Gemini app manager (free) to name two.
I use Gemini and it does EXACTLY what you are asking. You have to be rooted in order to use either of the apps I mentioned....but if you're using a custom rom, I guess you already are. Both apps are available in the Play Store, and there's an online tutorial on how to use Gemini....just Google it.......
Hit thanks if this helped
CM9....I don't have to...I just......can

Seeing as you're new here, i though i'd be nice to you this first time.
Please, no swearing.
The people who posted in the thread are making fun of you because of the absolutely unneeded swearing and nonsense.
To fix your problem you're going to have to tell us some more about your phone and what you've done.
Is it rooted? If so, what rom and kernel are you running?
Did you try to simply reboot the phone? (Also a good idea to cold boot it, meaning to shut it off, remove the battery, put it back in and boot up).
It's doesn't help what so ever to force close apps that are not misbehaving. The Android system manages this perfectly fine. Only force close an app if there is something wrong with it.
What apps have you installed? Some of them might be taking up alot of RAM and running in the background.
I was nice to you, now please do the same to us.
You came to us asking a question like that, you should be gracious that we're even replying.

Sure.
My Samsung Galaxy note 2 is not rooted.
I restart my phone couple of times if the number exceeded.
I have 39 apps downloaded from Google Play.
I was angry because it annoys crap out of me so pardon me.

Okay.
If your phone is running slowly and you're not rooted, then it is 99% sure an app problem.
It could be a hardware flaw in your phone, but my guess is app related (If your phone was as slow as it is now, when you got it, it is probably hardware related).
Try uninstalling any unneeded apps, like various tools you downloaded once to try it out, games you dont really play, etc etc.
Try to clear your cache. There are several apps out there that can do it (Some require root, and can clear more caches than non-root ones can, just try a non-root cache cleaner).
After doing that, do a cold boot as i refered to in my last post and see if it is better.
If not, try and go into Settings, Applications, Running Applications and see if there are any major apps that you installed yourself (not the ones that came with the phone) running and try to uninstall the ones taking up the most power, then do a cold boot again and see if it improved.
If nothing works, try and post a list of the apps you have installed on your phone that you installed yourself.

I don't think its hardware related. When I got first my Note 2 it was suprisingly fast. So it's probably the apps.
I've cleared all my caches, deleted a lot of unneeded apps and also done the cold boot after that I navigated to Settings>Applications manager> running apps.
I noticed samsung's keyboard took 55mb of ram, google service 20mb. maps 32mb. play store 10mb. settings 39mb 0_0. Those apps that came with the phone took a lot of ram. why is that? is there anyway to decrease the number?
You can use Titanium Backup to freeze or unintstall any apps that aren't needed by the OS. This will prevent them from ever starting up again.
Is the used up ram actually causing you problems? As I understand it android will make use of the ram to help switch apps quicker. So if its high its not a problem.

there are apps out there that tells you which apps uses the most cpu cycles. i can't recommend one as i don't use them, but might help you pinpoint your problem-app.

So you want more Ram han? Here is a very simple trick
Go to developer option
Select limit background processes and then select 4 processes...
You will see ram will fall below 1 gb

As far as I know, it makes my phone laggy when the number is high and the animation when you open a folder seems slow and also for notifications
Anyone know if there's still a way to access the ram clear option like in previous Application Manger to clear memory?
The one thing I've seen missing, course coming from Note 2!
Well the only way I have found is go to the bottom left of screen and tap. Will bring up your active apps > select and kill the app not wanted. Not quite the same as my S3 ram clear either.
I have not found one. Like the previous post said bottom left close all apps is all you can do now.
I had installed DroidAhead's S3 Task Manager shortcut from the Play store and it worked great on my Note 2, I really miss the functionality!! Great way to clear RAM and stop apps, hoping someone comes up with one for the Note 4. One of the apps I would gladly pay a couple bucks for.
From some reading. clearing ram is not necessary cause it will just fill up with other apps loading up. Which is Linux design (which is also Android).Say not to worry about it & that stock min. Free setup is good at keeping things running smooth.
I did have a lag for camera, & would at least have that handy for those situations. Guess reboot works for now!

There's a widget called active applications
Already been aware of that, does not free up used ram from background services though. I've decided to deal with it. Maybe at the point it reaches root, then i can just make changes to minfree like before
Clean master is the best cache/ram clean app. It run on auto schedule, kind of install and forget. It notify you when to clear cache or you could do it manually once notified. According to the our guy, most system apps are run as a service, if you kill them, it will restart and eat more battery if you keep doing it. By Android O/S design, it wants to load up all the frequent apps to the available memory as much as possible, so you could launch them much quicker than from storage. So usually I only clear memory before an event like Benchmark test or before playing a game or what ever... Clear cache will make you application run much smoother and launch quicker.
I'm currently using an S8+ which I really like but my main gripe is that it closes apps in the background to frequently. I have a game that I'm in all day but once it gets to be the 4th or 5th app previously used it gets closed and when I go to reopen it from recents it starts the app from scratch. I don't mind when it happens to Discord or other chat apps which take less than 3 seconds to load but when it's a game it can be 10+ seconds to load.
Previously my OP3T didn't do this. My game could be the 10th app back and would still be in memory. It's a daily/hourly annoyance.
I was curious how the Pixel 2 XL is handling recent apps memory management and was hoping someone could test and let me know.
Many thanks
I'm guessing it would be very dependent on which app is loaded as each app requires a different amount of ram. Which game are you playing?
Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes, usually also have Slack, Discord, Messages, Chrome, and maybe another few apps in memory. No issues on the OP3T or the Pixel XL so I am assuming it wouldn't be an issue on the XL2 but I dunno how things are being managed in Oreo.
I knew that was how Samsung did things so I'm not complaining about it I'm just hoping it would be another incentive to move to the XL 2.
I've been meaning to give that game a try anyway. I'll install it and let you know in a bit here.
---------- Post added at 08:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:18 PM ----------
It took me over 20 apps before it finally forced a reload of the game. For reference, fitbit, flipboard, drive, fit, audible, authenticator plus, blockfolio, changes, simplenote, Android sleep, steam, youtube, yunmai, ynab, calendar, docs, powerapps, destiny, play store, play games, chrome, gmail, hangouts, and discord. A lot of these are smaller easier apps so I'd say we are looking at 10 or so medium sized apps before a reload is forced.
awesome! thank you @amlwaycooljr
at least for me, memory management feels as aggressive as my old s8+. Dont' recall it being this bad on my old pixel 1. Wonder if its due to some oreo tweaks? If you play games or use like chrome and a few messaging apps, expect everything to refresh fairly frequently, especially compared to 6gb+ ram phones. one of the biggest bummers for me personally.
Memory management has been getting worse for me. For the past few months Chrome and Youtube in particular are pretty bad with pages and videos refreshing in the app while I'm using them. I usually don't even use that many apps at once.
