Can you revert lollipop back to Dalvik? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've been enjoying lollipop v20A since yesterday already and it's cool I have to say, but I miss using programs like titanium backup and Xposed framework. I just need to use xposed once to enable tabletmetrics for Spotify and also titanium backup to remove mcaffee antivirus. My device is rooted with busybox installed already. Anyone know how to revert back to Dalvik?

There is no Dalvik any more, ART (which stands for Android Runtime) has been built from the ground up by Google for android, it works a million times better than Dalvik, and Android L is the first release to use ART fulltime, with no alternative options available to us.
Dalvik is never going to make a return.
Titanium works perfectly on android L, you just need to install the Titanium beta version.

I am familiar with runtime environments.. All I want is a way to operate dalvik for once. It can be through a Patch or a kernel or whatever.

There are other ways to do what you want without Xposed or Titanium.. Root browser, ADB and a few other root/Dev tools can/will be your best friend.

Its not even possible android lollipop is built around art dalvik isnt even present not at all its not even compatible with lollipop so dalvik cant work with lollipop and a kernel updat would not change a thing the whole system the whole lollipop release would have to rebuid to even make dalvik work and only google can do that.

I'm gonna make this work!
I am currently working on a cross-compatible version of the dalvikVM runtime that might solve the whole issue. It's based on KK dalvik, so the work is a bit buggy, but should something be stable enough for general use, I will supply it with instructions on how to implement it in the system.
I honestly don't believe that the Android RunTime is ready to be used yet. We aren't prepared for it's power, or even the lack thereof.
As far as lollipop goes, I love the UI, I just want Dalvik back as well, and I WILL get the best of both worlds, even if I have to brick a few devices along the way.

Stock Lollipoop rooted with SuperSU - but it keeps resetting everything I do

see #5 for problem
Hi guys,
so after quite some time with custom Roms I decided to go stock again as somehow I don't need root at all. Well, that's not true. I miss AdAway.
As there is no possibility to root the stock rom, is there ANY AdBlocker that works on Lollipop? AdBlock Plus doesn't (yet).
Why did you say there is no possibility to root the stock rom ?
I'm running Stock ROM, rooted and AdAway running fine.

Flash twrp recovery and root through the recovery. It'll ask you when you reboot the system if you want to root it
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app
Huh. Didn't know it was THAT straightforward and I've been flashing my phones for years.
Well. I flashed TWRP and SuperSU 2.46, succeeded. But Adaway and Adfree don't work correctly. They block the ads but only until you reboot, then it's reverted, kinda like with a tethered jailbreak on iPhones.
What am I doing wrong here? Also the block is not like on KitKat - there it was really blocked, really removed, here only the images of the ads are removed but you still see the space they were supposed to be.
I also used a system app removal tool that also didn't work although it shows success. It just removes the installed data like updates.
When I delete apps manually via ES Explorer, they just reappear at the next reboot.
Root Checker says root is fine but it isn't supposed to behave like that and undo my changes.
What's wrong? Do I need another kernel maybe? As I said I went back to stock completely and updatet through to L.
I believe I got whats causing the issue.
After deleting a system app and rebooting, I got a message saying that the phone was restored from an "unnormal behaviour". Does Lollipop bring some kind of system restore point that just automatically restores itself when "weird" things like host file alteration happens? If yes, how do I get rid of that?
This phone has always had system files protected since KitKat. You need a kernel mod to delete system apps.
Don't know why the ad blockers aren't working. Adaway is working fine for me on stock US Dev Edition rooted. You said you are using Adaway and AdFree? Are you actually using both at the same time? maybe they are interfering with each other?
No I meant it happens with both. Only use adaway now. They work but after a reboot the adblock is gone and I need to apply it again. In fact, AdAway says it's deactivated and AdFree says it's already up to date but ads show anyway and I need to install the fix again to get rid of them.
Can you maybe point me to a kernel mod? Would want to get rid of some bloatware.
Maybe I should try installing xposed and see if it's gone after a reboot.

But unfortunately, flar2 hasn't had the time to update for LP. A user posted the kernel module in Post #210, but a subsequent user said it doesn't work. Custom ROMs have write protection disabled, as does Dev Edition stock ROM.

Odd, as mentioned, I've used AdAway for quite some time now, and don't have these issues.
Yes, very odd indeed. Well, if I don't get it sorted out somehow I might as well switch to Viper or some other close to stock custom Rom again, or make it Dev like you.
Things are getting worse, in 1 of 2 cases AdAway spits an error at me when trying to apply the fixes and the phone just reboots and undos everything. It's like some protection from rooting or changing anything although I am rooted. I don't understand it. I can't possibly be the only one having problems with root on Stock Lollipop
This is really annoying me. I think I'm better of just installing a custom rom and setting the phone up again, will cost me an hour but at least I'm done with the bugs.
Yup, decided to jump the gun, wipe and install ViperOne and now everything works as I wanted it to. AdAway stays active and working.

Interesting. I wonder if Adaway is dependent on the system write protection being disabled. I wouldn't normally suspect that, and only thinking of it since you mentioned the system write protection issue as well.
On the other hand, its the only difference I can think of between my phone and yours that would matter. I am on stock rooted Dev Edition, which apparently does not have the system write protection enabled by default.

I also assume that's the reason. I've never been on a stock rom since I don't know when, but figured that actually I only wanted AdAway which would normally not require a custom rom per se... but as it didn't really work in the end (and also other root-requiring stuff), I went back to custom again. Well, it's not that it's that difficult to wipe the phone occasionally and set up a clean custom rom to get it back to perfect performance. Gonna go with it.

If you are rooted use a file manager with an editor that has root capability (like File Manager HD) and go to /system. Make a backup copy of build.prop and then edit it to change the value of ro.sf.lcd_density from 480 to something lower, like 450, 400, or 360. I tried the latter and it worked. However the appearance of some native apps like phone or camera may become funky. IF you want everything to look normal you will have to install Xposed and do some stuff like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507369
Be careful not to go too low with this value. People usually don't go below 320 because the phone may not reboot afterwards. Below 360 things are not even visible, at least for me.

Before you attempt to use the guide that najoor suggested, be sure to backup your ENTIRE ROM and not just the build.prop file. Installing Xposed on many Note 3's and any TW devices for that matter, ends in disaster. Many are left in an infinite bootloop, causing you to need to wipe everything and reinstall your ROM.

I concur. I personally don't like Xposed anymore. It was fun the first few times I used it and then I realized it tends to be chaotic in the way it changes the system. In general any tool/software that changes things in an irreversible way without the user's explicit knowledge is in my opinion poorly written. I remember that when I had an ATT note 3 on Android 4.3 I rooted it and installed Xposed and some of its modules and was very content with myself. But then when the time came to upgrade to 4.4.2 the phone refused to do so because it saw my system as "altered in an unauthorized way". I unrooted it to no avail. I uninstalled Xposed and all its modules, once before and once after unrooting to no avail. Finally I sat down and started looking at the system files and Xposed had changed so many things without my knowledge that tracing all of them and reversing them took me forever. I had the luxury of using Safestrap back then to do trial and error but since there is no such thing for lollipop, if you don't have a custom recovery and you mess up, you will need to flash the ROM from scratch and lose your data in the process.

I've never used Xposed and I never will, but I also have the resources and the knowledge to just change the stuff in the framework and SystemUI myself.
If I'm helping anyone upgrade their system, the first thing I ask is if they've installed Xposed or running a ROM that has it pre-installed. If they say yes I recommend them just starting over from scratch with OEM firmware, which is easy to do on any brand phone. You have Odin for Samsung, RSD Lite for Motorola, and fastboot for HTC to achieve this.

With the new TWRP recovery you can install also system.img. But to install TWRP recovery you need also fastboot. At this point, when you install TWRP recovery, you can install also system.img and boot.img.
However you can do all that you want in many way. The link for TWRP recovery is in the first post.

I will be trying this out right after work and will report back!
This is just great, Zulu, thank you so much for sharing this project with us, there's just no way of going back to Android TV after you try this rom. Are all the functions to use an external storage with apps enabled? No need to flash modified kernel to acquire root as we had to do with lollipop? Thanks again, mate,

All ok and selinux is also enabled. so google can't break the balls saying that we are not secure. Also if i think that the real security in android is only with root, because without root permissions, you don't have sufficient permissions to manage and clean up your own system.
For me, selinux enabled is good only because some crap apps can check this to not work. When you hide the root, you are on pure and simple AOSP, so no problems for everyone.
I tested many things, but please test and let me know what we can add or correct. I use it as daily rom from some days.

Thanks, man, surely will do! In your personal opinion, is this one falling behind your build of LP in any aspects, or it's just as good? I'm flashing it right now, will report this afternoon already about any eventual issues! Thanks once again
EDIT: Tried formatting two USB drives as "internal storage", one of 32 GB and one of 8 GB. The 32 GB one keeps failing over and over, giving me a java related error (timeout).
The 8GB one formatted and worked fine.
The Dish Network Anywhere app won't run. It attempts to open and crashes. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Any ideas anyone? Other than that this is fantastic so far. Thank you @zulu99 !!
Can i preinstall apps on windows or would i have to unpack and repack in linux? to clarify I'm looking for a way to install same apps on multiple devices without doing one by one, as of now I have a folder in Es file explorer (android TV apps) and transfer via LAN then install one by one.
Anyone know easier way?
Thoughts helium backup, twrp backup first device and restore from backup on other devices.

Don't forget that this firmware is android 6. So to say if an app works or not work, compare with the stock firmware. some apps are not ready for android 6.

AOSP Full Android 6 Marshmallow on Nexus Player.Full Android 6 v.1.0
Android in TV is not just movies and songs but also millions of apps and games.
Full Android firmware want be full Android Experience with NO Limits.
With Android you can run all standard Google Play apps and also apps made specifically for Android TV.
For the best interaction with Android from your couch i suggest DroidMote, because with it multi-touch is not a problem.
What's inside ?
Kernel:
NTFS, NFS/CIFS/F2FS Filesystem support
USB Webcam support & USB Audio
ExFat support
Firmware:
Full AOSP firmware with standard Android Launchers. Android 6 MRA58K
Compatibility with many more apps with the classic Google Play Store ( .... Google Plus, Youtube, Chrome, Gmail, Hangout, Skype, Maps etc. etc. )
MTP + ADB (transfer file from NP to PC via usb cable like your tablet/phone)
Unlocked fixed Volume (now you can use any remote to UP/DOWN/MUTE volume)
Bluetooth a2dp external headsets and speakers support
UVC Webcam video HAL
(tested with Logitech C525 for video call in Hangout and Spype)
Arm translation to be compatibile with arm-only apps. Like Netflix and Skype
Support external microphone from usb webcam.
(tested with Logitech C525 for voice call in hangout and skype, voice search in google now, sound recording )
Chromecast functionality
What not working and i'm working on ?
Google camera app can crash. The HAL for the usb webcam is experimental but you can do all, videocall, take photo and record videos with the appropiate app.
Installation:
Download the firmware from this link: https://goo.gl/7Xy1qL
Put the device in bootloader mode:
1) fastboot flash boot boot.img
2) fastboot flash system system.img
3) fastboot -w
To root you can download the last SuperSu beta and install with TWRP recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nex...recovery-twrp-2-8-6-0-touch-recovery-t3114717
To restore the original firmware you can use the Factory Images "fugu" for Nexus Player https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Note:
The remote that came with the Nexus Player will pair and work with this ROM, however it is not sufficient so please refrain from asking questions in this thread about it. I recommend using DroidMote or an hardware keyboard/mouse for realistic functionality. Only directional keys are not sufficient for a full version of Android. I love Android in TV and i use it from 3 years with many Android Tv Box. I made this firmware for my personal use, because i like Android with standard apps UI, that are more accessible, updated and fast. I like a customizable launcher, but specially i don't like imposed limitations made just to protect economic interests of few.

Questions about running stock rooted ROM / XPosed (Gravity Box) / Substratum

Hi guys,
After months of hesitation, I finally ordered a Pixel 2 XL. Now after a few years of running custom ROMs, I'm thinking of running the stock Google ROM with tweaks. But I haven't done that in a while so I have some questions, after rooting and installing TWRP:
- is it safe to install the latest Xposed framework beta? (bootloop/crashes)
- does Gravity Box work fine (no crash/bootloop)?
- can I apply Substratum themes on rooted stock?
- which kernel would you choose between Flash and ElementalX? I've been using the latter for a long time but curious about Flash.
- how do you handle monthly OTAs? Can they be installed running all of the above?
Thank you! :good:

Like you, I have always run custom ROMs and this is my first time running stock with tweaks like you mentioned.
1- yes, as far as Xposed goes for me and my device, I've had 0 issues. If there is any lag, just choose the "optimize apps now" option in the Xposed installer.
2 - gravity box works flawlessly for me and gives so many features. I had to support the dev and bought the unlocker!
3 - you can use substratum, but since the March update, you have to reboot after building overlays to see them in the overlay manager.
4 - I've tried almost all kernels available for our device, and I don't know why, maybe it's a placebo, maybe not, but Flash has been the best for me. Virtually no slowdowns in terms of performance, and solid battery life as well.
5 - most people flash the factory images, editing the flash-all file, removing the "-w" to prevent data from being wiped. Me on the other hand, I do the most overkill option which is fastbooting the factory images to both slots, leaving the "-w" intact, and basically starting fresh every month it ends up being a few hour process but I don't mind because I have a bit of OCD and like having a clean slate to start from when new updates release.
Hope this helps!

Hi,
Thanks for the comprehensive reply, it's appreciated and it does help!
I'm not sure about your last answer about OTAs though. So we have to flash the whole factory image every month? Isn't it possible to sideload the OTA? And what about Magisk and Xposed, do they have to be flashed again every time? I guess Substratum themes have to be compiled again as well? I guess I've been so used to custom ROM and dirty flashing that I got somewhat lazy
Does the unlocker for Gravity Box add more options? Or is it just a way to donate money to the dev?
Thanks again.

Unlocker is to support dev as well as it unlocks the ultimate notification controls which has a trial period
Ota are fine but we all prefer to flash the whole image because it is recommended and hardly comes up with errors
If you install magisk module for xposed then you would only need to re install magisk zip and your previous modules would be still installed
For substratum you need to disable overlays before updating and just re enable them after updating to latest update
Cheers ?

I can't seem to be able to boot after flashing the xposed zip. My device shows a corrupted system error and boots back to the bootloader.
Is there anything I'm missing here?
Thanks!

Which version of Xposed did you flash? And which version of the Xposed installer did you install?

I flashed xposed-v90-sdk27-arm64-beta3.zip. But I ended up installing XPosed through Magisk and it actuallly worked.
Are we not supposed to flash the .zip? It's what broke everything. I managed to flash the factory image and got my phone back to normal.

Glad you got it working.
I downloaded the Xposed APK in the Magisk thread and installed Xposed within the app; after reboot everything seems to work normally for me.
The way you did it is also fine though:good:

Google assistant is part of LinageOS..??!!

Hi all..
I have been using LinageOS for quite a while now, I love it and applaud those that have worked so hard to make such a wonderful OS.
But the main reason for using it is so I can avoid google. I have just installed Linage-18.1-20211113-nightly-beryllium-signed (I did not use the GAPPS package) and when I checked the installed apps/system, there is 2 google assistant apps.
I also rooted my mobile before installing Linage using magisk-v23-0 and disable-force-encryption=-treble, this was done through TWRP 3.3.0.0 beryllium. I mention these in case there is a possibility of these google apps coming from there, but have searched on the net and can find no evidence of this..
Anyone know anything about this? If Linage is now including google apps I am going to have to find another OS, and I really do not want to..!
Cant seem to get these google assistant apps off my phone (POCO f1). Tried every wipe I could do in TWRP, tried a port of CalyxOS, nothing will shift them.. Even when I 'force halt' they just switch themselves on again in a few minutes..
Going to try going back through the LinageOS versions and see if there is one that doesnt have them.
Nobody have an idea of how to get rid of these?
It's definitely weird, very weird (and hard to believe, if I may say so).
Using LOS ever since and never ever had such thing happening. Sometimes even putting gapps on it to try something with GSF...
Did you do a proper re-install from the scratch, just like by the book?

Other than that, perhaps try asking in

Hi SigmundDroid (cool handle)
Have now tried E Foundation too, every wipe I could do in TRWP, nothing will shift them, they activate a few minutes after I 'force stop' them..
Am now trying to find a way of doing a full format of the partitions as these files are like viruses..
E Foundation forum folk are also a bit startled by this, think they would like to know how to remove the files as part of the install procedure, me too..!!
Just found this;
https://pastebin.com/bf9Hh4RH
3rd and 4th line down.
When I look at the google assistant apps, the first one shows at the bottom of the screen under ‘advanced’;
Version 11
com.android.hotwordenrollment.okgoogle
The second one shows;
Version 11
com.android.hotwordenrollment.xgoogle
Not 100% sure how to use those lines, but they look to be adb commands… Any idea anyone?

Of possible relevance is that it's what does the transfer of accounts and settings from your old phone in newer Android versions. I don't plan on using Google Assistant generally, but it was very handy that the Lineage setup hooked into it for transferring accounts and stuff from my "old" phone.
Ah, the plot thickens..
I do get that some folk are ok with google, but not me.. Would still very much like to get rid of them. Also, those that are making google-free roms would no doubt want them gone too, can hardly be google-free with those hiding deep in the moby..
Did you clear the system partition? Some ROM install packages run an addon.d script to retain Gapps and other stuff. Of course LineageOS does not contain any Google stuff, only AOSP. So there is just another logical explanation for this. If you want to be sure, look in the LineageOS image yourself.
Apologies.. Looks like I had not made it clear, I do not now think Linage, or Calyx or E-foundation have google assistant in them.. They seem to be remnants on the phone, probably from the original rom.
But they will not easily be removed and so remain regardless of which custom rom subsequently ends up on the phone.
Am hoping someone way smarter than me can work out how to get rid of them, also hoping it will help others achieve the same..

Hmm, there is not much of an explanation what it does - looks like uninstalling a lot of bloatware.

Which ones? (you can do screenshots in TWRP with power + vol down)
I guess we can assume you did the mandatory
Now tap Factory Reset, then Format data / factory reset and continue with the formatting process

One other thing: it can also be the product partition. Gapps are normally included in the product image in the original firmware. Did you wipe that one as well?
Its still in LOS 19.1 , despite years of complaints. Starting to look like they keep it in there on purpose, no option to uninstall, disable is greyed out..... SKETCH!
Same for Lineage 20 on my OnePlus 7T Pro. "google free" system ...
Is there an explanation somewhere why the apps are permanently and indelibly integrated? Why is there almost nothing about this on the net?
The .apks are 100% in the lineage images. You can verifiy this by yourself, if you want.
They are located in the product.img under priv-app.
